I replaced a LaserJet 3330 AND an Epson stylus (for color and labels) with this (almost) marvelous product.

It has total all-in-one function -and that is, indeed, a lot of function. All of which works flawlessly.

I am well pleased with it.

That having been said there are a few negatives that a buyer needs to be aware of.

Software:

1. The hp software is, as always, a nightmare to install, especially when you have had a 3330 installed before. The 3330 software uninstall leaves many ''artifacts'' which are not identified in any document behind. These artifacts will not permit successful installation of the 9110! After four hours on the phone with HP tech support and the manual deletion of about 100 of the offending artifacts I got the 9110 installed and it the HARDWARE really works like a charm.

2. HP has done its ''standard'' AWFUL job in developing support applications.

a. For the "DIRECTOR", which is the ''standalone'' access to the device, they have re-invented the Window GUI and replaced it with a totally incompetent one. It is an almost incomprehensible hodgpodge. Had they stuck with the Windows GUI it would have been a much better product.

b. The "Gallery" which is supposed to organize your images is **surprisingly** substantially worse than the Director! I say surprisingly becaus the Director is so bad. The Gallery is one of the worst pieces of software I have seen in a long time.

c. The Fax software which is invoked when Word or Outlook is to send a fax does NOT communicate with the MS Outlook address book. This is a real pain in the neck.

Hardware:

1. There is NO manual feed! So that if you have an occasional form, label or envelope to print you must open the feed tray to insert it.

2. There is no way to insert a ''dialling'' prefix (e.g. 9, for a PBX attached phone line) -this is annoying but not dibilitating. Other fax machines and all-in-ones do incorporate this feature.

In summary:

It is fortunate that, in contrast to the HP support applications, the Drivers are quite competent. So, when printing from MS Word or Excel or scaning from Adobe Photoshop everything works extremely well. Except for a few, seldom used, functions the HP apps are avoidable.

The 9110 is an an excellent but imperfect product. Its function exceeds any other all-in-one that I could find.

I guess that perfection comes only in heaven and I am in no hurry to get there.

Buy HP OfficeJet 9110 All-in-One (C8140A) Now

I just bought an HP 7130 last week, before seeing this newer model. The 7130 was an absolute piece of crap, and I had second thoughts about the 9110 as well, not having seen it in stores near me and thus being unable to test it. Finally, I got it delivered, and oh my, what a world apart it is from the 7130. HP must have fired the team responsible for the 7130 and brought in serious replacements -the 9110 is a wondrous piece of equipment for serious users. I simply love it! Much easier to use, extremely silent, intelligent, faster; it''s worth every single penny!

If you have bought any other all-in-one within the last couple of weeks, take it back, and get this one instead. You won''t feel sorry, guaranteed!

I recently purchased the HP 9110 All-in-one machine. It works great...NOW. I spent about 10 hours on the phone with HP support before we finally got the software installed correctly. If you don''t have networking, multiple printers, and can use a USB cable, you probably won''t have any problems, but if you need to use a parallel, think twice!! Now that it is working, the print speed is awesome (for an inkjet) and the two-sided printing feature is very cool. All in all, I''m happy with it now, but a few days ago, I would have had a very different opinion!!!

Follow-up review: FAX problems. I have had 5 or 6 occurrences when somebody has faxed me something, their machine says "fax not received" and sends another out to me, and so on and so on, while I AM receiving their faxes, several copies of the same thing, so I have to pick up the phone and tell them "I got your fax, please tell your machine to stop faxing!" --embarassing to have to do this with a customer! Reason is, this 9110 is a Color Fax machine, and the majority of fax machines are b/w and do not always communicate properly with the 9110. Went to hp numerous times with this known issue, had to do a firmware flash, changed the receiving speed to make it slower so that this shouldn''t happen again, but it still does, occasionally. I will probably give up and buy a separate fax machine. Not happy about this, and will go to great lengths not to buy hp again. But, as I said earlier, the printer part of this is wonderful! And, using it as a copier is very good. The scanner is slow, but OK if summoned through software other than hp''s (such as Paint Shop Pro, or OmniPage Pro, or Adobe Acrobat.

Original Review:

Anyone considering the 9110 may find this helpful: the following is taken from my answer to someone on an hp forum who had just bought a 9110 and who could not get its scanner to work by pressing the "Scan" button:

Similar happened to me. I never try to use the Scan button anymore. I either call up the HP Director software from an icon I put on my desktop and access the 9110 scanner there (hint: whether scanning a document or a picture, stay away from Scan Picture, which gets you into the awful HP Gallery or whatever it''s called, just use Scan Document and save your new file in the format you need where you need it), or better yet, I access the scanner through other software, ie Microsoft Word, or Omnipage pro for OCR or Paint Shop Pro. For quickly scanning paper documents to text searchable PDF files, or for copy machine-like printing of documents, I bypass the 9110 altogether in favor of a Canon DR-2580c scanner, which is worlds faster and better for that. I pretty much use the 9110 scanner only when faxing, and as a slow, reliable flatbed for images.

My experience with the 9110 has been that the printer is awesome, the fax is OK, but anything else having to do with hp''s software is difficult, un-intuitive, kludgy, and unpleasant-to-impossible to use. The HP Gallery, which handles images, is particularly bad in this regard, and I avoid it like the plague. The support services, mostly overseas-based, have been sometimes helpful, sometimes not, and quite often frustrating. I have been on online chat for hours trying to get stuff squared away, not always successfully. Direct talk on the phone is better, if you''re pretty good at understanding accents.

I have used HP printers for many years starting with the DeskJet 500, but when it is time to replace this unit, I will definitely look elsewhere. Maybe the all in one concept will be made more workable then (maybe it has by now, I''ve had my 9110 for just over a year), but right now I might be more inclined to go back to separate components, a printer, a fax machine, and a scanner. I really loved my hp business inkjet 2200, which is the print engine used in this 9110 (although admittedly the 9110 improved on the 2200 somewhat by having a working Stop button so you can easily stop printing when you''ve made a mistake, the 2200''s Stop function didn''t work that well, and also the second paper drawer on the 9110 is awesome, it''s giant and holds a whole package of paper at a time).

Sorry to be negative, but I think you''ll find going through your other programs'' software to access this scanner much better than doing it directly with the hp interface (even though admittedly, you''ll still be dealing with hp software during the actual scan, it just seems less of a hassle when you call it up through another application).

I have had a H-P OfficeJet 9110 for nearly a year now, in January the scan function stopped working. On H-P''s recommendation I uninstalled the software and reinstalled, that did not fix the problem. After two more attempts of using H-P''s more elaborate proceedures to uninstall/reinstall it still did not work. H-P sent me an 11 page Complete Uninstall proceedure which took me over 3 hours to complete and it still doesn''t work.

This is a software problem.

TECH SUPPORT IS FROM INDIA AND IT SUCKS! They have repeatedly told me they will return my call within 24 hours and it usually takes 6 10 days and they still can not figure out the problem. We have proven it is not a hardware problem, it is running on XP Home on a H-P computer. They don''t care if you are down or not or whether your business relies on the machine.

Someday, a company will find out that everyone is fed up with service from India and the Phillipines and will offer US tech suport and will steal the market.

Print function is as advertised, quality is not photo quality, fax I have had no problems with.

If you want a scanner, do not buy the H-P.
