I have been a Visioneer fan for some time, and I saw one of the Strobes used in my doctor''s office and have been interested in one ever since.
The Strobes were overpriced so I never bought one, but broke down and got this one. I figured this was the low end of their line, since the documentation is for the RoadWarrior and the Strobe 100, but when I called Visioneer they told me this one has all the latest hardware in it and buying one of the other models would be a step backward. That made me feel better at least.
I should explain my decision: I used Quicken religiously and have always wanted a way to easily attach receipts to Quicken entries. (Older versions of Quicken had ways to, but they were all iffy and imperfect. Quicken 2007 does allow more direct scanning, although it, too, is pathetic but workable and does work with this scanner). I mention this because it seemed to me that the NeatReceipts scanner''s claim to fame is that it reads the receipts and stores them and you can search by them. That''s not ultimately what I need. My data is already sorted and I don''t need to OCR the receipts--just store them for when I want to see them. Plus, buying this scanner got me PaperPort 11 (I have been using 9, refusing to upgrade due to cost) at no additional cost, which I do use extensively also. A two-for-one deal!
The scanner is actually quite nice. It may not be perfect, or a flatbed, but when I truly look at what I want one for, this is it. I''ve scanned over 200 receipts with it already and dozens of other documents. It''s not as bulky or hard to place on my limited desk space as my old flatbed scanner (Visioneer 9320-USB). Plus, there''s no "warm up" time which I always hated.
However, on the flip side, After the unit scans the document quite quickly, it pops up "Converting", which does take way too long for my taste. For a scan that takes say 10 seconds (for an 8.5x11), the conversion process takes 20-30. I THINK that time is dependent on what format you choose to scan to (i.e. Searchable PDFs take longer than PDFs), but I haven''t found a format that just "pops" in to Paperport without conversion (I''ll note here when you scan from Quicken 2007 into Quicken there is no conversion time--I like that!)
I have also scanned more than a few color photographs with this unit that have come out nicely. I was afraid this was mostly a B&W scanner, but it does well with color as well it seems.
As for difficulties feeding, I can say it is an art. I get more straight than crooked, and Paperport does do a good job straightening them for you, but it is annoying to have to start over. I wouldn''t let that "quirk" of this hardware deter you from choosing this unit.
All in all, I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to others considering it.

I bought this scanner for my wife who originally just wanted something to scan in her recipe collection. I was torn between purchasing the RoadWarrior and the Pentax DS Mobile 600. I''m glad I bought this one. The software description of the Pentax is rather scant, so it''s hard to compare, but I believe the RoadWarrior wins in terms of flexibility. After using it for a while, my wife wanted to scan in her business card collection. The included BizCard application worked great. She also found the need to scan and OCR documents into Word. No problem. Photos...piece of cake. It has handled every task that we have thrown at it.Some have complained about the difficulty of getting the scanner to feed straight. We have largely solved that problem by increasing the paper pickup delay to the max setting (1.25 seconds). Also the auto-straightening software is sometimes confused when the original contains a diagonal edge, but that feature is easily turned off.
Cons: When I first installed the scanner, I could not get it to calibrate properly and the scans had light streaks. I called Visioneer tech support and they guided me through downloading and installing a fix from their web site. After that things worked great. The software is a bit clunky (too many mouse clicks to get to the setting you want to change), but you get used to it.
As far as hardware requirements go, my wife runs this on a mini-ITX system with a rather weak processor (1 GHz Via processor, 256 MB). The software performs well even in that environment.
One last piece of advice: when creating pdfs, use the Paperport desktop as the destination for the scan rather than Acrobat Reader. It is much easier to stack and unstack things there as well as do other forms of editing like annotation and cropping.

This scanner is a great little portable mobile scanning tool. The OneTouch software is wonderful; it scans directly to an application or a file (I use it for PDF''s mainly) without ANY intervention. Simply inserting the paper starts the process and in seconds the document is on the PC. I''ve found the size, USB powered featurer and travel case wonderful for taking it alongside my laptop where it makes quick work of receipts. The scan speed is not as fast as desktop ADF but works well for portable use.I tried the Neat Receipts solution but it was awfully slow, required very convoluted and large software components and much more complicated than this. Highly recommended for any mobile scanning use.

I Love this Scanner! It is extremely easy to use, simple and quite fast. It needs no external power, and only needs the USB port to work. Since it scans text as well as high resolution photo''s, it is perfect for eliminating all of those stored papers, articles, recipes, etc. that I had lying around and could never find when I needed them.I especially like the bundled software notably PAPERPORT 11. I have been a paperport user for more than 5 years, and cannot live without it anymore. Instead of MS explorer, Paperport creates little bitmaps of each document and allows easy visual views of documents.
Another GREAT bundled software program is the business card scanner. Whenever I go to business trips or, conferences, or seminars I now scan all of my business cards as well as my travel receipts. The fields automatically populate off of the card, which then get transferred to my outlook contacts. NEVER MISS ANOTHER BUSINESS LEAD!
Again A PERFECT portable scanner that sits in my home desk drawer until I need it as well as my suitcase when I travel.

At first, software install froze. Upon install, Paperport takes a long time to open. Once it does, works fine. Can scan both sides of page to one file.

I really needed these cartridges and since they are no longer available locally, this was my only option. But $75 for 2 black ink cartridges. Someone really knows how to hit you in the wallet. At first disappointed that ink was not in OEM package, but were in sealed package usually found in OEM box. Bonus of 1 additional ink cartridge was made to offset items not being in OEM box.

and will do damage to your printer if not very careful. It is best to just replace

The unit itself is very quiet when in its power saving mode, with the only indication that its on being a blue light on the front panel. While printing, the unit is certainly louder but still enough to maintain a conversation at a reasonable level. I haven''t truly tested to see if I can get 5 ppm colour or 20ppm B/W, but I have noticed that from power-up to print it takes about 15-30 seconds and less than 10 seconds from sleep; neither numbers being an issue for me. Its a small unit that tucks away in a corner of the room nicely, and its tray takes a full stack of office paper. The one thing that would make this fantastic would be a duplexer unit. This is sold as an option for this model, however, the price nearly doubles.
To address some of the previous reviews, where Konica-Minolta stopped supporting the printer by no longer providing printer driver updates, I should say that for this particular printer, configured as a network printer through the LAN port, I can''t see this being a problem. Both on the Mac system as well as on Windows 7, the printer is recognised as a Postscript printer, meaning that the drivers are Windows'' generic built-in. I have never been a fan of using a vendor''s own print driver since they tend to add a lot of cruft and little value (having not installed the vendor driver I wouldn''t know if this is the case here), but I for one am hard pressed to see what difference the vendor driver provides over the PS one, and am of the mindset that there is none. So I don''t think planned obsolescence on KM''s part might not hit the 1650EN quite so hard. Just some food for thought...
In short, for under $200, you will have trouble finding a laser printer with this economy, durability and a network connection.

We run several different operating systems in my house, and getting a printer which can support all of them is a challenge sometimes. This printer fit right in without any trouble. I had the printer unboxed, on the network, and printing from my Linux machine within half an hour, including time to deal with a broken software issue on the Linux machine.The best bit: because of the Postscript print engine, and Konica-Minolta having the good sense to include Postscript Printer Description (PPD) files, the drivers shipped with the machine worked perfectly on my Linux computer. If you''ve ever set up a Linux printer, you know that just never happens.
If you have a simple network, this printer is probably plug and play. With absolutely no configuration on my part my main desktop was able to connect to the printer and print.
If you buy a network printer though, there''s a good chance that you want to tweak your setup just a little bit. It was really easy to assign a network address of my choosing instead of an automatic address. I entered that address into my name server, and then it was trivial to connect to the printer from any machine on my network, by entering a printer server host of magicolor1650 (the host name I entered in the name server).
It really doesn''t get easier than this. I''ve been setting up home networks for 15 years, and this is the easiest printer installation I''ve ever had. Plug it in, tell the network about it, tell the computers about it, and it just works. That just never happens.

I got this color laser printer to replace a Samsung CLP-315W which was junk (I reviewed it too). The 1650EN is connected via ethernet to a network of Macintosh computers. It has a nice small footprint. It is very quiet in sleep mode, mostly quiet between printing and sleep mode, and somewhat noisy when printing but don''t chalk that up as a complaint. The print output is fantastic. The toner cost per print is above average but as it''s not our primary laser printer, it doesn''t get much of a workout on any given day. For such a small unit, the print speed isn''t bad; grayscale output is a little quicker. I give Ease of Setup 3 stars, perhaps unfairly, but only because the company does not do a good job of updating printer drivers for Mac OS X upgrades--it took K-M not less than a couple of months to put out a beta driver for Snow Leopard (OS X v10.6) after its release by Apple, and figuring out which driver(s) to use/install is somewhat confusing. This is the second model of Konica Minolta laser printers that I have purchased in recent years. I am very satisfied with the Konica Minolta brand. Laser printers are great because the toner is much more affordable than constantly having to pay for ink cartridges. Also, laser doesn''t "bleed" if water droplets get on the copy. The 1650EN printer is smaller than my previous printer, which is definitely a plus factor. It provides good, sharp color printing for an affordable cost. The only drawback to the printer is that it is not very fast.Save 20% off
I was about to order another color laser printer in this price category, but wanted to get some opinions from friends who might have some experience with laser printers in the home, and I am glad I did. This printer was recommended by a friend whose opinions I trust. He told me that he had been using his 1650EN in a home network environment for almost three years without any negative incidents. From my own past experiences in the computer business, I saw this as a refreshing alternative to the units that often came into our repair shop having a far more common name in laser printer technology.For the price, I can''t imagine anyone would have any complaints about this printer; the print quality in both text and color graphics is excellent. Printer set-up couldn''t have been easier on my Mac network; I didn''t even bother with either of the two discs that came with the printer, I just downloaded the latest drivers from the Konica-Minolta site. I would, though, have to say that there is at least one shortcoming to the printer that should have been addressed some time during its present life span: a user cannot upgrade its relatively small amount of on-board RAM. This would certainly be useful when dealing with higher definition photoshop projects. The print speed suffers a bit too here, but is satisfactory when printing text. Also, now that wireless networks are all the rage, the 1650EN shows itself to be a little long in the tooth since several newer competing models in this price range do offer the wireless connection feature. I would guess that this will appear in the printer that replaces this one in a future K-M lineup.
In all, I expect this printer to last me for several years at my current print demand levels, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a modestly-priced color laser printer for the home.

Good product. Photos printed on this paper look much more like a professional print. Epson papers have also always been good for me, but I haven''t found Satin Finish pre-cut papers from Epson in the size and price I desire.
