I''ve configured and setup Canon, Epson, and HP printers over the years but this is my first Brother model. With USB and network connectivity being more common in the past few years, there''s really not much initial setup difference between brands.

I took the unit out of the box and began removing umpteen pieces of strapping tape and figured out how to install the initial starter (3,000 pages) cartridge and paper trays. (Two different high yield cartridges are available for purchase as well.) Took me a little while to figure how to fit everything in, but the instructions were clear. Powered the unit up and programmed it via touchscreen to connect to my wifi. Unfortunately, it does not support 5GHz 802.11n networks so I joined it with my 2.4GHz network, and after figuring out a few acronyms, got it to print. My Macs running Mountain Lion (10.8) had no problem seeing the printer via Bonjour and drivers were installed automatically.

I did not refer to the user guide during the setup process, but there are several available printed in addition to some very detailed network guides on the enclosed CD-ROM. Brother stroke a good balance between providing decent documentation but not printing a 500 page manual that everyone doesn''t need.

Printed the first few documents quickly and double sided with ease. I''ve printed envelopes and standard 20lb paper and haven''t had any jams or misfeeds. Clear, crisp black printing as expected from a laser. I didn''t time it to see if it met 42 pages per minute but it doesn''t seem too far off.

Once the printer is on the network, it''s much easier to configure via the HTTP gateway on the your computer''s web browser rather than the touch screen. First, I put in an SMTP gateway to be able to do scan-to-email and a POP server for email-to-print directly on the unit. Scan-to-email works great directly on the unit in PDF, JPG, or other common formats, including the fast and accurate automatic document feeder (ADF.) Unfortunately, email-to-print only works with the TIFF-F format -which is not useful. Would be nicer to be able to send a PDF directly to the printer (or even a word doc) and have it print as is, but alas, no. Subsequently, I shut this feature off. Similarly, printing via the front USB port is limited to PRN files (Windows) and JPG images -not real useful.

I did not test the fax function as I do not have a landline to test it out, but it seems well thought out and offers plenty of options (PC-Fax, address book, etc.) Scanning directly to my Mac does not work with the native Mac OS drivers but requires the installation of software from Brother -not sure who to blame for this, but my Epson inkjet multifunction totally functions within the native Mac OS X scan and print application. Additional software is included in the CD-ROM, but I didn''t feel a need to install it.

In terms of other costs, there''s 128MB RAM standard in the printer and it''s expandable using standard DIMMs. This should be fine for most users though. The drum unit, which is not part of the cartridge, has to be replaced every 30,000 pages -so factor this into your per page cost even if you are buying high yield cartridges. (Other brands usually include a new drum unit with every cartridge -I know this to be the case with HP.)

I''m knocking off one star for some poor thinking in the networking functions (no 5GHz network support), no native Mac network scanning, and unnecessary requirements of obscure/uncommon formats (i.e. TIFF) for the USB mass storage printing and email-to-print. If those features don''t really matter to you, then you''ve likely got a 5 star unit for your small to medium size office with laser printing, color scanning, and monochrome copying/faxing needs.

Over the past few years I''ve spent well over $10,000 on Amazon. Just call me an amazon junkie! However, I think I''ve probably written only one review during that time. I''m grateful for those that do write reviews and I read many, many reviews as I research my purchases. Having said that, this printer is so freaking awesome I can''t resist letting the rest of my junkie friends know how wonderful it is.

I am a geek. I have used Dell, Apple, Epson, Brother, HP, Samsung, Ricoh, Canon, etc. printers. I have set them up, used them, abused them, and loved many. This Brother MFC8950DW is replacing a HP Color Laserjet 2840. There is absolutely no comparison between the two. Although I should point out the HP was a color laser multi-function printer. I bought a $150 epson multi-function to take care of my color needs and I bought this Brother printer to take care of the high-volume daily needs for B&W laser printing, faxing, copying, scanning, etc.

I could go on for hours about the greatness of this machine. However, let me skip to the pertinent details that are not well documented.

This is definitly geared for the workplace.

It has settings locks, function locks, and more.

It comes with all the necessary drivers on CD.

Another reviewer dissed it due to not having network drivers. The drivers come on the CD. It''s a network printer.

It''s wifi built-in. I don''t know what that guy was talking about. I have 4 different computers all using this printer.

All 4 computers use the printer wirelessly. No problems. No errors. No confusion. It was amazingly simple. The silly

CD even finds the printer on the network and does all the installation/firewall/port routing for you. It''s really really easy.

It is an excellent scanner. The scanning resolution can be changed depending on your needs, so those that didn''t like

the scanning quality need to adjust their settings. Upon receipt of this AIO (all-in-one) I immediately set the employees

up with the task of scanning in 10 pages from 320 files. That comes out to 3,200 pages scanned. Every page had hole

punches in the top of the page. We fed the tops into the ADF even though the documentation said not to as the ADF

might jam. Many of the 3,200 pages were dog-eared, wrinkled, or otherwise imperfect. Over the course of 3,200 pages

we had 5 jams. (Jams are super simple to clear) That is simply unbelievably impressive.

All of the scanning was done wirelessly and it effortlessly sent the pdf''s to the computer we told it to. It scans into tiff''s,

pdf''s, jpeg''s, and more! You determine either at the time you scan or via the control panel how you want it to scan your job.

You pick the resolution and the format it''s saved into. This is true for the USB capabilities as well.

It can scan to an e-mail address, or a computer on the network.

It has it''s own e-mail capabilities. Once I set it up with an e-mail address of it''s own, I can scan anything and e-mail it

to anyone in the world, without using a computer.

The paper tray hold closer to 550 pages.

Although this is a B&W printer, it will scan and fax in color if you want it to.

The warranty is 1 year, but is an on-site warranty!

Pound for pound I don''t think there''s another MFC on the market that comes anywhere near this one at this price point. Originally I was just going to replace my HP with the newest model from HP. However, when I actually went to a store and looked at the HP models, I was highly unimpressed with the build quality. They felt cheap and had tiny touchscreens. I love that this printer retains physical buttons to navigate it''s menus and use it''s functions. The touchscreen works like a charm as well, but for heavy office use, I wanted physical buttons as well.

I''m sure if you''re still reading this, you probably think I''m a fanatic........and maybe I am. This MFC has made me a fanatic. I''m trying to save my personal pennies to buy one for my home. It''s overkill for my home, but it''s that awesome. It''s that well made. It''s that easy to use. It''s everything I could hope for in a MFC (save color printing capabilities, hence the Epson) and the supplies (i.e. toner, imaging drum, etc.) are cheap (when compared to competitors) and the high yield toner lasts forever! Someone stated that they can''t get the toner for this printer. I ordered an extra when I bought this and received it within days. I failed to mention how fast this dang thing is at printing. It is freaky fast at printing. Single-sided and double-sided.

We have only just setup this printer, but have used other older models that are similar. It was a snap with windows XP and windows 7 PC''s. We don''t have windows server in our little environment.

As we expected the brother network setup software installed quickly and easily on windows xp and 7. The drivers are lightweight, especially as compared to what comes with HP printers that stuff won''t fit on a CDROM, so they have to package it on DVD. We use wired networking and that setup was trivially easy. It just DHCP''d (automatic IP assignment) and that''s that.

One of the very nice things about the driver install it is registers your PC on the multifunction so you can scan to your computer from the unit. No relay race to place paper and run to your PC to start the scan. Nice! The scanning quality and paper handling is also quite good. Even though the printer is monochrome, the scanning is full color. The auto-feeder works well and so far is quite reliable. The legal size scanning is great.

We don''t use the FAX function on this unit, but the setup has been easy to perform in the past and looking over the instructions it appears the same on this unit.

Printing is quick and high quality. In one older brother model there were paper handling issues with #10 envelopes. Not with this one. Paper handling is great. The large paper tray is nice too.

On-printer controls are mostly on the relatively large touch screen. This is a big improvement from older models and I find it makes changing settings quick and easy.

I used to be a HP gal, but now I''ve been converted to a brother enthusiast.

Laser Multifunctions like this Brother are the Swiss Army Knives of small offices and businesses. Like most Brother printers and multifunction machines, this one is easy to set up, has good print quality and very reasonably priced toners, particularly with Brother Printer TN780 Super High Yield Toner Cartridge which gives 12000 pages, the cost per page is 0.91 cents, as of now. One of the least expensive laser printer costs per page. Works well as a fast printer, copier, fax machine and scanner.

Setting this multifunction apart, in a sea of Brother and other multifuncion machines, are the following 3 things:

1. SPEED: fast print speed of 42 pp improves the efficiency of a busy office.

2. COLOR TOUCH SCREEN CONTROL: instead of hard to read monochrome menu trees nested within trees. Having multiple features in a machine is useful only if you can use the features easily and large color touch screen makes it easier to change settings so you can use more of the features.

3. PRINT FROM MOBILE DEVICES: using AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Brother iPrint&Scan, Cortado Workplace, and Wi-Fi Direct. I personally have not yet printed from any mobil device or Google Docs.

Although it is a network multifunction, when I hooked it up to a Windows SBS2011 server, the CD that came with the printer did not have drivers for the server! I got a screen message to download the drivers from Brother web site which has a lot of stuff like manuals, drivers etc. but very poorly organized with no clear explanations as to which driver is for which purpose. There was no driver for Windows SBS2011. On calling Brother technical support, they answered within 5 minutes (prompt by tech support standards) and Wilma told me that I needed to download Windows Server 2008R2 "Add Printer Wizard" driver and I was able to get at least the printer working with the server. Setting up Fax server and scanning server is even more complicated. Scanning and fax functions are easy to set up with a USB connection.

How can you sell an ethernet and a Wi-Fi multifunction and not send the network drivers with the machine? There is hodgepodge of software available for this machine on Brother''s web site but without much explanation as to what the software does and which driver to use for which machine. It is hard to figure out what to download.

If you get faxes on the computer, then Brother saves them in TIFF file format, not PDF. But software CD that comes with the machine also comes with Paperport 12 SE which you can use to convert TIFF to PDF files, but it is just an extra step and a hassle.

Except for these glitches, Brother 8950DW is one of the fastest and least expensive print per page cost multifunction machines out there and can be a workhorse for a small business.

Compared to my old Brother 8840D, which I have been using for 8 years and still in good shape, 8950DW seems print twice as fast, and double-side printing as well as scanning are fast too. It is a little bit louder than 8840D but that is certainly not problem to me. One thing need to pay attention: at the very beginning I could not access the printer through WiFi even though I have successfully configured the WiFi network. Later I realized that it is the firewall (I''m using Bitdefender Total Securit"y 2013) that blocks the access. I had to disable "SNMP Status Enabled" checkbox from "Printer Properties" -> "Configure Port" -> "Port Settings" tab.

I bought the larger cartridges because I had read that they last so much longer. However, after having used a couple of the more expensive cartridges (which cost 50% more than the PG-40) I am convinced they do not last 50% longer than the regular cartridges. In fact I saw very little difference. After examining the boxes, I realize that the larger cartridge only holds 22ml versus 16ml for the regular (37.5% more). It doesn''t even seem to last a third longer to me.

So I will purchase the regular cartridges from now on. Same print quality, but a better value.

Buy Canon PG-50 FINE Ink Cartridge (Black) Now

There is a flaw in the math and logic of a previous reviewer who stated that this cartridge only has 37.5% more ink then the PG-40. The reviewer obviously is missing a very important and significant part of the equation. (i.e. the saturation point of the sponge).

In other words, if the sponge of the cartridge retains 4 ml of the ink. Then the PG-40 cartidge only has 12 ml of effective ink (since 4 ml is retained by the sponge). Therefore a cartidge with 22 ml of ink = 22 ml 4 ml saturation point of sponge = 18 ml of effective ink. Which would be 50% more ink then the PG-40 cartridge.

You have to consider everything that effects the output of a product when performing a scientific or mathematical equation. Neglecting the unobvious parts of the equation and only focusing on what is obvious and is in "front of your face" results in serious miscalculations and errors in reasoning.

Furthermore, by considering how much ink is retained by the sponge, it also shows that you gain more then you realize when you refill ink jet cartridges. Since the sponge is already pre-saturated with ink at the time you refill it, then any ink you add will be used as part of the output when printing pages. So by refilling this cartridge with 22 ml of ink when it runs out of ink, then you effectively have a 26 ml cartridge. And this applies for every refill, since after the first time the cartridge is filled up, the sponge is pre-saturated and any ink added will be directly used by the printer. Something I think a lot of people who refill their inkjet cartridges do not realize.

I believe the most important thing to look at when purchasing an inkjet printer is which printer is the best for refilling. You can buy a very large bottle of bulk ink for around $20. You can get over 2000 printed pages out of a single inkjet cartridge on this printer. This is by far one of the easiest and best inkjet cartridges for refilling. Granted the Canon has a few annoyances when you refill cartridges, but those are easy to get around, and if anyone has any refill questions I''ll answer them in the comment section.

I bought this high capacity cartridge because I read that it works with the Canon ip1700 printer. Apparently this is not true for US printers, but it is true for European printers. Unfortunately, canon support had no help for me, so I opted to manually put the ink from my new PG-50 into my empty PG-40. It was much easier than I expected, as I just had to remove the tops from both cartridges, and swap out the ink soaked sponge. A little super glue and scotch tape to hold the top in place so the ink didn''t evaporate, and it worked great!

After looking at the amount of black ink that the sponge had for both cartridges, it is apparent that the high capacity gives more ink per dollar, but it does take some effort to get it to work.

Love these labels; even though I confess I did use a Laser printer (these are made for Ink Jets), printing was a SNAP!

One may think that these labels are not needed, that you can just jot down your return address when mailing items. This is true, but if you mail items a lot, these are great to increase your speed in getting things in the mailbox before the mailman picks up. I received both Avery # 8167 and #5267 to review. Since they are identical (same specs and template number) but one is designed for an inkjet printer (8167) and one is for a laser printer (5267), I''ll be posting the same review for both items.

These Labels are designed with a "Pop Up" Edge. This means that you bend the sheet at the side and the labels you want literally pop up an exposed edge so you can grab them easily. Then you fold the sheet flat again. As with most labels, you can get away with running the sheet through to print only a few labels and then rerunning a partial sheet for a second print of the remaining labels. In my experience, each subsequent use of a partial sheet runs a greater risk of a jam though. I''m sure Avery''s "jam free guarantee" would only apply to a print of a full page.

These smaller size labels would also be useful for other applications-such as price tags at a garage sale...

I''ve never found Avery to be anything but top of the line and this product is no exception.

These labels are great for my Brother printer, but I just wish the last few courses of labels wouldn''t be so curly. Not sure what they could do about this, but they''re wound so tightly around the roll that by the time my printer is getting to the last 50 labels, they stay curled even when placed on envelopes or folders. For 400 labels, though, you can''t beat the price and the Brother printer is so easy to use.

The MP470 is a superb value at under $90 and is a very flexible tool. It has excellent text output, decent photo output and a useful scanner/copier.

Seriously, the text output is fantastic. I''m back in college and have had to print out over 1000 pages of PDF''s for my classes this quarter. My workhorse 4-yr old Canon i860 printer was fast and could use cheap non-OEM inks but it often made for very hard reading which wasn''t worthwhile. This quality of the MP470''s text on plain paper rivals that of the HP 5000-series Laserjets at work.

I seem to average a little over 220 pages of text (which includes images) from the CL40 black ink cartridge. That''s nearly 9¢ per page, which is not spectacular. For general use I prefer printers which use two cartridges (one black, the other tricolor) as opposed to 4,5, or 6+. It may cost a little more but it''s so much easier to keep track of spare cartridges you will inevitably have to keep on hand.

The LCD is easy to read and the media card slots are handy but as someone who uses Photoshop to at least sharpen the images I print, the card slots aren''t used much at all.

The scanner is OK, not great but not bad. Documents scan and print clearly, photo''s are OK. I have a Canoscan 8400 and it''s much faster and accurate but it cost twice as much as the MP470. I think for school and household use, the scanner is fine. For serious photo scanning, a dedicated scanner will be much better.

My one criticism of this printer is the noise. Not as loud as dot-matrix but it''s louder than any printer I''ve used, including the MP160 (which my partner uses for her work). There is a quiet mode with a timer, so you can make the printer quieter (and slower) during certain hours of the day.

I have a certain disdain for all inkjet printer manufacturers for adopting the "Gillette" model; sell the product near cost and earn the profit on the consumables. Not only is this deceptive model for the purchaser of a printer but I think it encourages waste by making many printers ''disposable'' compared to the cost of ink. My 2¢... Having said that, Canon seems to be the best of the bunch right now. Due to their design, Epson has head-clogging issues and higher per-page output cost. HP has very lightfast ink but their non-business models always have paper handling issues. Lexmark is undistinguished (and Dell inkjets are just Lexmark printers that have no Mac compatibility).

This is an excellent printer for those of you who will only use it occasionally. It has fast printing & the print quality is excellent. If you plan to scan only once in a while this will do the job. If you are a heavy scan feature user look for a printer more specific for that. I use this to print directions, some pictures, boarding passes & to make scanned PDF documents. It has worked great for my needs. If you are a heavy duty printer user I would suggest one of the higher end Pixma models.

After reading the rave review in one of the leading computer magazines I was anxious to try the MP470. The magazine raved about the outstanding scan results attained by this equipment. Since my primary need was to scan photographs this sounded like the one for me. The MP470 is an excellent printer and produces great results, but its scanning capability is not good. Perhaps my unit was flawed since the results I obtained were poor. I tried various adjustment to improve the clarity but to no avail. I have returned the unit to Amazon and purchased another brand.

I don''t have much to add to what others have said about this printer. It truly isn''t as good as a $400 unit, but remember it costs under a hundred bucks, and for that price it is a Very good printer. A few things to watch out for, though. First, in common with a number of other Canon consumer printers, the paper feed is not very good. Specifically, there is no tray. You mount the paper almost vertically in the back, where it is held up by a retractable support. The feed is combination of gravity and internal mechanism. Mounting of the paper is critical, or it will feed slightly at an angle which will be noticeable on your output. Certainly not a show-stopper, but just keep in mind you need to be precise in how you put the paper in. Second, you are guaranteed to break that support I mentioned if you aren''t particularly careful. The paper still feeds OK if you do, but then paper mounting is even more critical and you may have to load less sheets at when you refill. Finally, it takes the printer a while to get itself ready, especially if it was powered up recently. Once it gets going it''s plenty fast, but it isn''t uncommon for that first page to take 15 seconds to come out, and I have actually seen it take almost 60 seconds to start after the job is sent (all were B&W, short text only), which can be annoying on short documents. Once it gets going, though, print quality is outstanding for the price.

UPDATE:

In the above review I talked about the sensitivity of the paper feed and that support in the back that can break quickly. After having used the printer for five months, the output quality remains excellent. However, the paper feed has become a bit more sensitive (and the support did break), so while it''s still a good printer, the annoyance factor is up a bit. Also, still unable to figure out why sometimes it prints instantly and sometimes you have to wait 25 seconds for the first page to start (even same document on different days). While I''m not so upset that I would dump the unit, this does wear on you at times, so be aware. Still, it''s only 90 bucks...

Okay, so I had 2 all-in-ones, both HP''s, in the past. Both of them lost their ability to scan and copy, so the all-in-one became a one-in-one. HP''s customer service dept. claimed that they had corrected the problem on their newer products, but wouldn''t/couldn''t refund or exchange these 2 broken ones. I hesitated on the Canon for that reason, but after seeing the reviews and witnessing what it could do, I have to admit that I am IMPRESSED!

The first thing I printed was a color photo from a file on regular paper, regular quality and it is sharp, yet the colors are beautiful and it was instantly dry a perk for the home user! The second thing I printed was a scanned black and white photo (at an impressive 1200 dpi) on glossy Kodak photo paper and it looks like the professional photo I scanned! I was able to make wallets from a 5x7 and no one would ever detect that I did it from home.

I did print some black text on regular paper and the quality is just about laser.

I am SOLD! I highly recommend this for your photos, flyers, invites or anything that you print from home and people will think you had them professionally copied.

The style of the machine is sophisticated and sharp and the BEST THING IS there are no buttons for my 2 year old to push!!! Until he finds the door for the LED, but that hasn''t happened just yet. ;)

I purchased this calculator a week ago at Office Depot. I had a lot of difficulty loading the printer paper (just where exactly am I supposed to insert the paper?...) The most irritating thing for me about this calculator is that the decimal point is very tiny and tends to get lost (and hence very easy to overlook) among the otherwise large and very clear display numerals. Also the Print indicator is much too tiny for my liking.

As for the instructions they left me wondering what Canon was thinking when they designed the layout of the instructions. The instructions begin with calculation examples, then explain what the different keys are used for. Next is the list of specifications. Then follow instructions for loading and replacing the batteries. At this point, if you''re wondering how to load the paper, you''ll find them on the backside of the instructions rather than toward the beginning of the instructions where you might logically expect them to be. As for loading the paper, it took me several guesses before I finally figured out exactly where to insert the paper. Otherwise, I basically like the features of the calculator except for, in my honest opinion, the inadequately tiny decimal point.

In summary, the seemingly illogical order in which the instructions are laid out, an unsatisfactory decimal point size, and the unnecessary difficulty in loading the paper detract from an otherwise easy to use compact calculator with a very clear display and a nice printout. In conclusion, I would suggest checking out other calculators before purchasing this one to make sure you''re satisfied with all of its features.

for a non-commercial grade machine, it definitely meets my expectations. it prints and copies quickly enough and the quality is absolutely fine. the energy saver mode keeps the machine quiet when not in use. it''s easy to use, and it''s nice having all the multifunctions in one unit. fyi, i initially had problems because my usb cable was ten feet long. the user manual does not warn of problems with long cables, but canon''s fast and knowledgeable tech support folks solved that for me quickly. i''m a little annoyed that i must specify in the print dialogue box each time i want to use the manual feeder (aka multi purpose tray); the machine does not automatically detect paper in the manual feeder and print from it unless i first specify manual paper tray in my print dialogue box. it''s nice to have the printer and fax available to my entire network via the cat 5 cable, but unless i''m mistaken, the only way to scan to your computer is through the usb cable, which meant that after installing the network drivers i installed the usb drivers and now have a confusing number of drivers in my print dialogue box drop down menu. i probably can remove the network drivers from the one computer that''s connected via the usb, but i haven''t tried that yet, and i wish the setup instructions made that clearer. also, the scans initially were coming out unacceptably faint until (again with the help of tech support) i lowered the scan resolution setting and changed from black-and-white to grayscale. the fax interface is a little annoying in that i can''t access fax numbers from my outlook contacts and if i add an address to the canon fax address book there does not appear to be a way to delete it. overall, the machine is easy to use and performs with excellent quality. i am not disappointed.

We liked our Canon ImageClass D780 a lot, but after 5 years it needed repairs expensive enough to prompt us to replace it. The cost of the D1150 was about the same retail price as the D780 but doesn''t compare. Biggest complaint: you can''t fax manually to more than one number at a time. The only way to send to multiple destinations is to create an entry and give it a name and number. We fax to mostly new destinations, so that option is an unacceptable time waster. Another annoyance: it wrinkles the edge of our envelopes, and the envelope holder holds a smaller stack than the older machine. The output tray is situated such that it''s hard to see if there is anything in it unless you''re very close. These are the things we don''t like so far. We''ve had the D1150 for only a month and wish we could send it back. This multifunction unit does most things decently except for 2-sided scanning of paper that has been folded (for example, a letter in a standard envelope). Anything that is folded more than one time, like a bank statement that comes in the mail, will jam the ADF about 70% of the time. It happens when the machine tries to back feed a page to scan the back side. Better quality paper does seem to improve your odds of success, but we don''t control what kind of paper the bank uses. This is really disappointing, because it really puts a kink into my plan to scan all of my paper documents, many of which are 2 sided and came in the mail. The work around is to manually place each page (front and back) on the glass and bypass the ADF.

Aside from this, this machine does everything else decently. This machine prints really fast, has a short init time from initial start up (2-3 sec), and the quality of the output is pretty good. It prints 2 sided automatically, and does so reliably. Scan quality is decent more than enough for archiving documents, faxing and the like. However, if you are archiving family photos, you will want to use a dedicated photo scanner instead, like an Epson Perfection V600. Faxing is straight forward and intuitive, with several receive options in case you are not using a dedicated fax line. Built-in network print server is very useful and reliable. Connects to the network using hardwire ethernet.

Some annoyances: (1) There is a quirk with printing envelopes from the manual feed tray. You need to press the manual tray button and then select the paper size, every single time you use the manual feed tray. I''ve never had to do this with other printers. (2) This machine always wakes up around 2:00am from sleep mode, makes a lot of noise, and then goes back to sleep. It is loud enough to wake you up.

Overall, aside from the 2 sided scanning problem, this is a pretty decent machine.

We bought this Canon for our Construction Business because our previous Canon (the MF4690) died. We like Canon products and find them, generally, to be great working items. We were, however, not shown that same quality in this machine. The very first night we had it hooked up we had a power outage which put the printer offline. We looked in the physical manual and the e-manual for how to fix this and all it said was that if a power outage occurs, the only thing we can do is copy. So we had to call customer support. They were extremely helpful and kind, so that was a plus. That being said, we had to delete the device from every computer on the network and re-install it on all of the computers to get it to function properly; not happy about that. We also found out that although the manual tells you how to set up the e-mail/send option, this model does not do that the manual is for 4 models combined. The next day we tried to scan some items and were unable to. We looked, again, in the physical manual and the e-manual and could find no reason for it to not work. Again we called tech support and it was then that they informed us that we could not scan anything without a USB cable plugged in. They informed us then that the ONLY thing this printer does via the network is print very inefficient and inconvenient. The manuals tell you nothing of how to troubleshoot any incident and say nothing about how to fix a problem. Generally useless post set-up. The only function this copier does well most of the time is copy. The print is amazing looks like original version, and we are willing to concede that. However, it doesn''t always fully copy we used the ADF (ATF?) part of the machine (the top part not the glass surface) to copy and half of the pages it did fine, but on some of the pages it cut portions of the print and margin off. We are sending this model back and getting another Canon MF4690 for half the price that works great, has the e-mail/send function, and scans without needing a USB. Don''t recommend this copier to anyone using it for office/business purposes.

I love this printer, I have had it for 3-4 years and use it at a weekend school. I have printed about 60,0000 copies on it. Here is how to fix the 3 most common issues.

Have you noticed how the last page you get before you get the "Toner Life Ended" message is is perfectly clean and doesn''t seem to be lacking any toner? Because the cartridge is not really empty!

Here is a trick to make your cartridge print at least 1000 more copies..

Basically if light can pass through the 2 circular optical lenses on opposite sides of the cartridge due to less toner inside, the cartridge is jammed and you get the "Toner Life Ended" message.

When it happens, simply take the cartridge out, get some White Out, and paint the 2 circular optical lenses on opposite side of the cartridge.

Put it back in, print until it really runs out. If you are worried this will damage your cartridge, do not.. The printer had already indicated the cartridge was empty, so you have nothing to lose.

Paint the optical sensors, block the light, cartridge works!

When you get the Drum Life Ended message:

a. open the front cover

b. press the clear/back key

c. press 1 to reset

d. close the front cover.

You are done, it will count another 20,000 before warning you, but you may decide to replace earlier if not happy with quality of prints after some 10,000 more prints.

You can also refill each cartridge twice for about $10 each, just buy toner on eBay, for 7000 more copies.

This is an outstanding product.

It does it all. Copies, scans, and prints. It will print and copy doubled-sided documents. It will also scan double-sided documents through the document feeder as well.

I''m really impressed by the scanning software as it allows me to save my documents in a number of formats (Photoshop, jpg, bmp, and other files types, including PDF).

One thing that is very slightly misleading is the number of copies/prints you can get from a toner cartridge. When you see 3,500 (or 7,000 for the high-yield), that is only if you are using the toner saver mode (meaning you''re printing in either 300 or 600 dpi). The toner saver mode is a nice option, but the copies/prints tend to be light and not as easy to read. So if you are not using the toner saver mode, you can expect the number of copies/prints from a cartridge to be significantly less (I think I got somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 out of my standard yield cartridge). However, since there are numerous places to buy cartridges for discounted prices online, it isn''t that big of a deal to be getting a lower number. For instance, you can get a high-yield cartridge for about $45 and that will give anywhere from 3,500 to 4,000 copies/prints in the non-toner saver mode.

I definitely recommend this product. It is great for a small office (or even as a personal printer if you have a need for printing/copying double sided documents and will do a fair number of impressions [500 at minimum] per month).

As a public high school teacher, making copies at school takes a long time--the waiting lines and the non-collating abilities of the school''s old machines were problematic. I bought this multifunction machine to function strictly as a copier for my house. After wasting hours of time photocopying and collating multi-page short stories and assignments, I thought that this machine would be money well spent considering the time I would save.

The copying functions are stellar--it is relatively fast and the high-yield toner is set at a reasonable price. Because I live in a house with 5 other teachers, the expenses surrounding the machine are relatively low.

However, the printer has a propensity to curl copies upwards--even at settings and paper recommended by the manufacturer. Basically, if you have any ambitions to set up a copying and job and let it run without monitoring it, you should look at another option. After about 30 or 40 pages, the curled pages begin to run into the output pages, causing some pretty severe paper jams. Because of this paper curling, I find myself constantly monitoring the machine so the curled paper doesn''t get in the way.

A second problem is that the machine only comes with 32MB of RAM...so while the loading slot can hold up to 50 pages, it can only do 8 pages at a time before the memory runs out. Trying to buy new RAM is also a hassle because the suggested manufacturer provided in the manual changed their product codes so it is difficult to determine if the RAM you buy will match.

Do I regret buying this machine? No, not at all--I have saved hours of paper-sorting time because of the purchase. However, if I were to go back and choose a machine again, I might consider buying something with less problems than this one.

My 8065 arrived a few days ago. I bought it to replace my inkjet printer, and a scanner. I am happy with:

* installation: easy, for such a complex device. The installer asked all the right questions, and just worked on all my PCs.

* print quality: great. My old cheapo laser had trouble with printing Google maps, that''s why I got the inkjet. I am not sure why, but the drivers in this printer turn out easily legible maps.

And the sole point of unhappiness is:

* scanner: lots of banding while scanning color photos. The photo scans are unusable, even my kid looks wrinkled. I''ll have to keep my old scanner for an occasional photo scan.

Overall, happy with the purchase, and am looking forward to not replacing all those ink cartridges.

I''ve used this copier/printer for one year and am very happy with it. We share it over network among the whole family, between one Mac and several PCs. The functionality that comes at such a low price is amazing. I am especially fond of its automatic scanner sheet feeder which is build very solidly. I do lot of scanning, and it still has to miss a page.

After one year of using this product I can only regret that I haven''t bought it earlier. My previous multi-functional printer/scanners (HP) were a disappointment. Using this product, on the other hand, is a pleasure.
