The print quality and features are good for a local printer, but it is useless over a network unless you constantly send it new print jobs to keep it awake.

After it sits idle for a while this printer puts itself to sleep to save power (although tests suggest that it doesn''t save very much power). The problem is that this printer CANNOT wake up from sleep mode. If you try to send it a print job after it goes into sleep mode, the print job will just time out because it cannot find the printer while it is asleep and it can''t wake the printer. As shown in Kodak''s own troubleshooting guide, the only way to wake up the printer is to walk to the printer location to manually turn the power off then turn it back on again. Once the printer restarts itself it will work fine -until the next time it does to sleep.

The latest firmware update finally gives you a way to choose how long the printer can be idle before it puts itself to sleep -but the choices only range from 1 hour to a maximum of 4 hours -there is no way to turn this "feature" off.

I''ve got the Kodak Office Hero 6.1 but Kodak tech support assures me that ALL Kodak all-in-one printers share one major firmware flaw -none of their printers can wake up from "sleep" mode without being manually reset from the printer control panel.

This is fine for a local printer where the power button is within arm''s reach of the computer but it makes the printer nearly useless as a network printer and totally useless for cloud printing unless you keep sending new print jobs to the printer to keep it from going to sleep.

Instead of calling it sleep mode, a better name would be "coma" mode or perhaps "brain dead" mode.

I just brought this printer a week ago, and it''s the best I''ve had for a long time, I had a Dell A966, always losing the wireless connection and use up ink like crazy and the ink is not cheap, and they cost so much, the only problem I had with this printer is the wireless connection, download the latest software from the Kodak web-site, turn off your firewall before running the software, run the software for usb or wireless and follow the direction

I just bought this from walmart last night had no problem with set up on 3 XP computers. I went to setup on my laptop with Windows 7 got the same message about the not detecting it but I ignored it. Went to print something and it still worked so I am not sure why it does that but so far it has printed every time and worked like a charm. Very good printer!

The printer itself, has worked fine. The only issue I have is with the ink. I do very little printing. I''ve had this printer less than 2 months, and I just had to order a 3rd ink combo pack! Printers I''ve had in the past, HP and Canon, I never had to change the ink more than twice a year. Believe the other reviewer''s that say you WON''T be saving any money on ink with this Kodak printer.

I had HIGH hopes for this machine but so disappointed now...

It looked great, all matte black, square looks, clean line, nice "looking" LCD touch panel, $5 black cartridge.

I purchase this locally in Vancouver and had to exchange several times to get a working one. On initial purchase, the printer would turn on but never finish the boot cycle so I exchange it for another one. After the exchange, the second would not even turn on, exchange again. The third one finally worked but after using the product, I returned it. The printer menu was slow, hard to setup. Download additional printer apps was tedious. Even basic function required separate app to make it friendly to use. Also the WebUI was slow and unresponsive at most time during configuration. Their tech support was literally useless since the first two printer could not even turn on correctly.

Using Mac OS X 10.6.8

The computer software was buggy. The printer drivers seems OK but the firmware update was a POS. It could not update the firmware either thru USB or WiFi or LAN. I had to use a PC to update the firmware

Using iPhone or iPad

First you need to download the app "Lexprint" for printer thru iPhone or iPad. Second, the app will only print pictures or webpages. This is not how Airprint should. It does NOT allow printing from PDF or e-mail....very limiting

Honestly, I support Mac & PC at work and it took me over 2 days to configure this printer properly..two thumbs down!!!

Additionally, this was suppose to replace the Pro905 which had a five year warranty...why does the Pro915 only have one year warranty??

I bought a HP 8500A Plus...setup (networking and setting up send to e-mail SMTP) was done after 15 min.

I bought one of these because we had them at work. Then when the ones at work started to go down and lexmark wanted me to tell them what was wrong with them I told them forget it and had them all removed and trashed they were replaced by anything that wasn''t made by Lexmark. So on to the one at home. It kept losing the connection on my network and would take years to boot up I would have to spend three hours every time I wanted to print something setting it back up again and today it finally lost it all. It read that all of my cartridges were empty then it said it would not communicate with the cartridges. I tried a couple of new ones and still no luck. Their technical support is non existent because they are closed and even when they are open you get someone who can barely speak english and reads from a script. So after finally being done with it i smashed it into as many bits as I could and sent it to rot in the dump. I will never buy another one of their products ever again. Thanks lexmark for wasting my money and time.

I was really hoping that after a year or so...Lexmark would have addressed their massive QA issues lately. Trust me folks, as of this writing, trust the BAD reviews far more than the good ones. I have been fighting with this thing for two days...NOTHING works right on it. The software is a total mess, freezes all the time AFTER all the firmware and drive updates (come on Lexmark, after a year you can''t even update your drivers in the box?). Had to try to set up 3 times before it worked. I STILL can get the wireless to work. This is all with OSX and airports...NO EXCUSE Lexmark...this is just terrible, crappy software all the way around.

The printer itself seems ok...but its worthless since I can''t actually get it to do anything.

Their problems extend to their smart app website...which works maybe 10% of the time...the rest of the time everything just times out there.

DO NOT BUY this if you want your sanity. There is NO EXCUSE Lexmark for this printer and software to STILL be this terrible out of the box.

Mine is going back in the box and back to amazon...Lexmark owes me quite a lot of wasted time messing around with this POC...

This printer has good quality print, is fast and convenient. It does everything I''d like when it works, and for that, I would have given it four stars. It''s certainly better than the Epson CX4800 I traded it for. But it has numerous annoying little problems. It''s installed on my network by direct connection to my router via an Ethernet cable. Every now and then, the screen goes blank and can''t be revived. It says "entering sleep mode" for 5 or 10 minutes, but continues to allow printing. Online chat told me to shut the printer off and remove the power module, then turn it back on. That solved the problem, but when it happened again, they told me the same thing. Obviously, doing a cold restart every time the printer locks up isn''t a solution for a network printer that may be some distance from the computer issuing the print command. A second call told me to download and install the latest firmware. I did that, and now the printer never enters "sleep" mode, even overnight, although it''s set to enter sleep mode after 10 minutes. I''m convinced there are bugs in the software. I wouldn''t buy this printer again.

I am not very pleased with this printer. The paper always jams , when it prints the paper does not eject smoothly and gets hung up close to the front causing paper jams . When I put an SD card in the printer to export photos to my computer some of them always get messed up , distorted - they never all export and save properly

The touch screen sucks too , we don''t need these stupid touch screens on everything , I would prefer the old fashioned buttons

I had a lot of printers over the years . This model is not an improvement over previous Lexmark models.

When it comes to ink for my R1800 photo printer, I am concerned with the quality of the images I print. The Epson cyan UltraChrome Hi-Gloss ink cartridge provides superior resistance to water, fading and smudging. It is important to me that my prints are of high quality, so I don''t attempt to use the cheaper compatible ink cartridges. The color can be duplicated, but all inks are not created equal. I finally retired my 18 year old HP Laserjet 6MP. It still works, but the network printer box that I''ve been using with it is broken and my new computer does not have a parallel port on the back. The review on CNET for the OKI B411DN was very positive which led me to choose this printer. It was a true plug and play on my network. After attaching the cords and turning it on, my computer detected the printer on the network right away. I loaded the drivers from the included disk, and began printing. The speed and quality of the new OKI are many times better than my old 6MP workhorse. I''m very happy with it. It also has a smaller footprint and is lighter in weight than my old printer. Can you believe I paid over $1000 for that 6MP 18 years ago! I probably can''t even give it away now.

Buy B411DN - Laser Printer (2400) Now

I bought the B411DN model of this printer 3 weeks ago for my home network, selected the free shipping option and it arrived within 3 business days. Setup was pretty straightforward, although some of the Oki instructions were a bit out of order. One has to install the software from the enclosed CD before driving some of the setup function, but otherwise no problems. I have 3 PCs to connect, and elected to use the Oki website installer from each. This worked without a hitch.

We''ve used the printer quite a bit since then without any glitches or hitches. Its been all text and forms so far, and the print quality seems very good. I haven''t actually clocked the speed, but its much faster than the companion ink jet printer we use, and I can believe the advertised 35 ppm for text. Time to print start for a network driven job appears to be between 5-10 seconds, but once it starts it chugs along pretty quickly.

We leave it always powered on, although 60 seconds or so after power on (or after print job completes) it falls back into power saver mode, the silence of which leads me to believe it isn''t sucking up any watts of significance. If the advertised pages per cartridge holds up, then this will likely turn out to be far more economical than the ink jet.

Overall, I''d say this is a very good monochrome printer. Purchase price was, in my view, a pretty good deal given the performance, economy and good reviews on various websites.

This printer is excellent! Fast (even with duplexing), energy efficient, and sleek in design. LED technology is similar to Laser technology but more energy efficient (meaning less heat and curling) and less moveable parts which means longer lasting. And Oki is the innovator in this area. I was so tired of replacing color cartridges on my HP inkjet when all I do is print B/W for the most part. The B411 also seems extremely well built. Overall I am very pleased!

Coming from a SLOW Canon Bubble (ink) Jet printer that used ink like a Hummer uses gas, this OkiData B411DN (mine is BLACK) is like a Toyota Prius, except as fast as a Porsche.

I plugged the ethernet cable (not supplied) into my wireless router in the other room, and my computer instantly recognized it, but I still had to use the install CD. Did not have any issues with my MacBookPro, but I am running an older OS (10.58) and it works great! Within five minutes, I clicked print on a few pages, and before I made into the living room, all the pages were waiting for me, with immaculate prints. I then printed some high resolution pictures, and I like it. You can make out some artifacts, if you look closely, but it''s a LOT better than a Xerox machine (I haven''t used a Xerox in about a decade, so I''m sure they''re probably a lot better these days...)

The best part is how much I can print now! My ink tanks used to dry up, if I didn''t use them fast enough, and that old Bubble Jet would just drain $$$ from my wallet, and the heads clogged up. For about the same price as six (6) ink tanks (all the needed colors), I get a toner cartridge that lasts 1000 times longer! (just a wild guess)

I got it just in time for college, and INSTANTLY put it through it''s paces. I have to print SO MUCH for school, and this actually works out to be about HALF the cost of using the school''s labs, but the convenience factor multiplies my savings of money, time, and hassle to make my life so much easier. Black and white is all I need for school, and most other things can just be black and white. Color is for screens, man! I''d much rather have massive BNW WATERPROOF prints, rather than some smeared, expensive, ink-jet color.

It''s heavy, and it''s big, and my lights dim whenever I print something, but I don''t care. Love the wireless printing from any room in the house, and the black color goes well with my decor. I like how it''s all "closed" up when in use. The huge amount of paper is hidden, and it''s just this tight looking magical black box. I am also able to print envelopes, by using the "single feed" trays, and it''s easy! My professionalism has been compounded ten-fold! I seem legit now!

I purchased this product because I had a few cases of homemade wine that I wanted to create custom labels for. These labels are the perfect size for the bottles and worked out great! The only downside is that the formatting of the templates does not allow you to have images that go all of the way to the edge of the labels, but I made a few modifications and it worked out well. I do wish they had a glossy version, but I''m very pleased with this purchase.

The way it works is that this printer will connect to your router (you will need a regular network cable for this) and use the multipro cable above to connect from the printer to the cash drawer. Your iPad then connects to your wifi and using Square Register it "discovers" your printer. The multipro cable is how the cash drawer opens automatically.

I use this setup (as recommended by Square) and have never had a problem. Very happy with this purchase!

I have been looking for a reasonably priced duplex ADF scanner for some time now, I want to scan a file cabinet of documents and shred the originals. I thought this HP was it, it isn''t. I spent several hours over a few days giving this guy a workout. I scanned stacks of bank statements (30-35 pages at a time) (8.5 x 11) and mortgage documents (8.5 x 14) both single sided and double sided. Several times the ADF jammed (roller slipped and eventually gave up) and I had to man handle the stuck page out, I could find no way to release its grasp of the paper. These were not glossy pages, just typical bank statements. Other times one or two pages of a stack of 35 would scan in only a third of the page. It cannot scan duplex pages longer then 12 inches, I don''t know why. Duplex scanning takes more then twice as long as simplex because it has only a single scanner and must flip the page (I think it does this flipping twice). The software wasn''t smart enough to handle scanning mix length pages, if I had a document (for example: mortgage papers) with a mix of letter and legal size pages I had to tell the software that all the pages were 14 inches long otherwise it truncated the legal size to 11 inches. It all boils down to a lack of trust for me. Before I go shredding originals of these documents I need to be able to trust that I have good electronic copies and this scanner/software didn''t establish that trust.

Buy HP ScanJet 5590 Digital FlatBed Scanner Now

Sorry for the juvenile review title, but there''s really no other way to put into words the frustration that I have experienced from trying to work with this stupid thing.

The interface is cumbersome and largely unnecessary. I bought it because, at the time, it was just about the only reasonably-priced multi document feeding scanner I could find. I don''t need this multi document feed for office work, like most people; I need it for animation. If you''re at all familiar with the process of animation, it requires that MANY MANY MANY pictures be used, and I was looking forward to cutting down on my work time by having the scanner do most of my paper loading for me. Oh, foolish little me!

Not only does the paper jam 60% of the time, but the scanner always wants to scan it into the stupid software that came bundled with the scanner. So even if I''m trying to scan an image directly into Adobe Photoshop, I first have to go through the "HP Gallery" or whatever, copy the picture, and bring it in that way. I set it so that it automatically scans into Photoshop, but when I turn off my computer, it forgets its new instructions and goes back to uploading everything in the HP Gallery. It eats up time, desktop space, and PATIENCE.

Oh yes, and the TWAIN drivers that it supposedly comes with won''t work on my Macintosh. Sure, it specifies that NOW, but back then when I was doing tireless research on the product, it didn''t tell me that you can only get the drivers on a PC, so I basically wasted $500.00 on a piece of machinery that isn''t compatible with my platform, my animation program, nor my sanity.

HP wasn''t much help; they advised me to download some free software from their site that would install the TWAIN drivers that I''d need to work with my animation program, even though the software was originally for a digital camera and not a scanner. "It should still work, even though it''s not technically for that hardware," says the guy. Well, no, quite frankly. It does not, in fact, work. All that it does now is confuse my scanner for a digital camera and refuse to upload anything into Photoshop or any other program for some bizarre reason. In uploading the digital camera software, by the way, it completely wiped the existence of the scanning software that I already had on my computer so that I had to manually upload it again.

I can''t wait to sell this thing and get at least a portion of my money back. This thing is such a headache, please don''t waste your time with it.

Had to chime in on this one. We got the scanner about four months ago to replace a discount-bin flatbed Canon. It''s true that the thing occasionally locks up on me and requires a cord-pull. (Anybody else miss ''off'' switches?) The ADF also spazzes on some pages no rhyme or reason to it, just about 00.5% of the docs I scan it can''t grip or something.

The good news is that for what I do (making PDFs from official letters for business records)it works great. The front panel buttons can be set up to output to a PDF without any additional input or software interference I just tap in how many pages, press the ''scan document'' button I''ve got tweaked, and it doesn''t bother me until it needs a save name for the PDF.

I do a mix of Letter and Legal, which could be a headache the scanner can''t do duplex Legal, or Letter and Legal in the same job. However, the workaround is easy. After each scan job it asks if I need to scan more pages into the document. I scan the first set, then click more and scan the next. The ADF recognises which type it''s dealing with, so there''s no reconfiguring going between stacks of Letter and stacks of Legal.

Would I recommend this scanner? Not for everybody. It''s not optimised ''out-of-the-box'', and it''s twitchy enough that you kind of have to know your way around to keep it running. I''m a pretty competent tech, and I like it just fine, but I don''t know if Grandma is going to put up with its'' shenanigans. This would be less of an issue if the HP tech support were helpful, but I haven''t been able to get a straight answer out of them regarding my issues, and I speak the lingo.

This is a great scanner, but it is not User Friendly.

REVISED 11/12. We have retired this scanner. Physically, it still works but the HP software (Windows Vista) is a nightmare. The interface frequently hangs; there have been firewall issues; we have found it necessary to uninstall and reinstall the entire software package more than once. If you absolutely need an automatic or double sided scanner, then this may be one of the few ways to go. If a one page at a time scanner is satisfactory, then there are clearly better alternatives.

Rating should probably be revised down to 2* because of the poor software.

Not recommended.

---

Windows XP. SP2. Single Gateway Profile computer. MS Office. Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional. USB Connected.

Mostly used for scanning documents directly into *.PDF files WITHOUT using the OCR feature.

We bought this scanner a few months ago to replace a 7 year old HP Scanner, also with a document feeder.

The HP Scanjet 5590 is not something you can expect to work right out of the box; it isn''t as plug-and-play as we would have liked.

The included software is extensive and takes a long time to load (and to repair!). It may also require some tweaks to work at all, one of which we got from HP on the telephone and another (to improve scans into PDF) we found on their web site.

Once working, the software is still not "intuitive". There are many complexities to scanning and the HP software has a significant learning curve.

The scanner warms up quickly; the document feeder is fast and reasonably reliable but can jam if it doesn''t like the paper fed through it.

The double sided scan works but again, the paper must be be good quality.

We have had no difficulty scanning a dozen or more pages either through the document feeder or indivual scan into a single PDF file. We have also scanned single photos into *.jpg with good results. We have not scanned slides or negatives.

We only use the software controls and can''t comment on the button features.

We have not yet had to partially disassemble and manually clean the document feeder and have no comment on this feature either.

In summery: If you have some computer experience, especially with scanning and you have time to sort out the glitches, you can probably make the 5590 work for you and get good results. If you are a relative novice, this may not be the right place to start.

Add: 09/08. We purchased a new computer running on VISTA (former had XP) and attached the scanner. A software download was required. The unit installed easily and worked faster and with fewer glitches than previously.

UPDATE early 2010. We began to have software issues when the computer kept saying that certain files were unavavilable.

The solution (per HP) is to download the proper software, move it to a SEPARTATE FOLDER, click to open and EXPAND the files and then do the installation.

I use this scanner at work, even though I''ve tried to convince them not to order these. This scanner and the HP 550 below it are horrible. The software that comes with it takes up a ton of memory usage and is just generally bad. The OCR reader software and scanner are really poor and it is almost easier to just re-type documents yourself. Another issues is that the scanner is constantly being removed from the scanner list in Windows. We use about 6 of these scanners at work, and as the IT guy, I constantly have people calling me and telling me that Windows says they have no scanner installed. I have to "reinstall" them by removing the USb cable and plugging it back in so Windows will recognize it. Additionally, the document feeder james and sucks up multiple pages constantly.

The biggest problem however is that this scanner DOES NOT WORK with Adobe Acrobat. The software is incompatible. You can scan 15 pages of a document, but the software will only return the first page to Acrobat. You cannot do multiple page scans with Acrobat unless you do each page separately. If you visit the HP help forum you''ll see this is a common problem with several of their scanners, and has been for over two years yet it still hasn''t been fixed. The only way around this problem is to install a third party driver.

I would stay away from this unless you can find it really cheaply.

BIG SAVINGS: $100 Dollars in a year @ 6 rolls per month !!! (I calculated the savings based on a monthly supply program current offered by many cc processors.

The shipping is FAST.

I ALSO WANTED TO NOTE: IF YOUR IN A JAM FOR Credit terminal PAPER GORILLA PAPER IS THE FATEST IN THE WORLD FOR SHIPPING At my office, in 2 days without a single issue.

Gorilla is certainly the best all around (I have ordered from them through the website they have and the service is the same... A+
