Before I ordered the replacement drum, I was faced with the decision to buy a new printer with a new drum or just buy a replacement drum. The OEM drum was more than a new printer, so why not get the new printer? Because this compatible drum plus new toner was less than half the price. Also most of the new printers only have a 10,000 page drum and a starter (700 page) toner. For example, a new HL-2170W will only accept the TN330 (1500 pages) or TN360 (2600 pages) while this DR-400 compatible drum will last for 20,000 pages and my old printer will accept the TN460 toner (6,000 pages). In the long run it was much cheaper to replace the drum and toner and continue to use my higher capacity printer.
BTW, the drum arrived quickly, packaged within an air filled sleeve, and worked perfectly.

Did not dare to use it as it created a popping and clicking sound in my printer. Purchased a toner cartridge and drum as i was not sure which one was the culprit for my gray background and poor printing. This drum unit performed excellently right out of the box. I have had this printer for many years and it had been setting idle as a back up unit. Our main printer went down and we needed to get the back up going. The product came quickly and performed great. You would do well to give this product a try.

The first prints came out amazing. I used to work in a one hour photo lab with a Noritsu QSS-3011, basically the Cadallic of mini-lab printers. The best of the best. I am college student majoring in photography so quality is #1 to me. I would always print my pictures at the lab and fine tune each print so I would get the best. With this printer, I get nearly the EXACT SAME QUALITY. Which is nothing short of amazing considering we are talking about a lab machine that is in the costs of tens of thousands of dollars. The prints that I have printed from the R1800 rival the quality of that from the Nortisu lab printer.
The 8 inks provide a cost effective method instead of replacing one expensive color tank when just one color runs out. You can just replace whatever color you run out of.
The R1800 prints bordless sizes up to 13" in width. It can print panoramics from 4" to 13" from rolls of paper. Imgaine having a 13" by 44" panoramic on your wall! With the R1800, it''s just that easy.
The R1800 can also print on CD''s, which is a neat feature, but one that I probably won''t use too much until I get ready to graduate and create portfolio CD''s with my work on them.
5,760 x 1,440 optimized dpi resolution is what makes these prints so amazingly crisp in quality.
The speed of the printer is pretty impressive too. 11x14''s in under 3 minutes? 4x6''s in under 45 seconds? Yes please!
I believe the best paper I''ve used with R1800 is Epson''s Premium Luster paper. It''s semi glossy with a sheer luster to it that makes the color and contrast hold of the paper look amazing.
If you are even an amatuer photographer and care about the quality of your printers and are in the market for an at home studio printer, you cannot go wrong with the R1800. I would reccommend nothing else.

Everyone complains about the ink use and it drives me nuts. Epsons have the best quality and horrible ink use because for the same reason, piezoelectric technology.Every other inkjet company uses thermal technology which basically heats a pocket of ink to the boiling point and pushes out the remaining ink. This leads to rogue ink vapor and a fixed droplet size. Look inside a HP that has been around a while and you will see that the whole machine is coated inside with condensed ink vapors. When HP (Canon, Lexmark etc) need a larger drop they just squirt out multiple drops, a less effective method of control.
Epson''s piezoelectric technology uses crystals that have variable flex depending on the current applied. This allows for fine droplet size control. Epson is the only printer company that can produce variable droplet size. This impacts the quality of the print and leads to Epson''s quality lead. This also gives Epson more flexibility in the inks they choose to use since they don''t have to make ink that can boil. This is why they were the first to produce pigmented inks.
The down side to this technology is that the print head are expensive to make and hence Epson is also the only company to make a inkjet that doesn''t have user replaceable print heads. Anyone who has set aside an HP or Lexmark for any period of time knows that the ink starts evaporating if a head isn''t used and the head gets clogged permanently. Epson is not immune from this problem but since you can''t replace it they have to prevent the head from clogging in the first place. Their solution is to occasionally flush the head to prevent build up of ink solids. This leads to the ''mysterious'' ink use people complain about. Each cartridge has a separate head and each head must occasionally be either used or flushed. If you were to use an HP your unused colors eventually would become clogged and you would have to replace the head or cartridge with head to get it working. It is a trade off.

I sell prints in galleries both online as well as at a brick and mortar gallery, and before purchasing this printer, I was seriously considering the pro oriented Epson R2400 and the HP Designjet 30. I decided on the Epson R1800 because of its better glossy output and the Wilhelm Image Research predicted print longevity of up to 200 years without fading on some Epson papers. This same prediction applies to the Epson R2400 as well, however, from the sample prints that Epson sent me, I didn''t like the glossy output of the new K3 inks that the R2400 uses -the highlight areas where there is hardly any ink laid out on the paper show no gloss, and when viewed at an oblique angle, the latter are disturbingly dull. I must admit however that, were my work exclusively Black and White on matte paper, there would be no better printer for the purpose than the Epson R2400, or the 4800, and the 7800 pro series. My choice, was determined by my work, comprised of color in both glossy and matte, as well as B&W at which, with the proper profiles, the Epson R1800 is very capable. Many pros with the same needs as mine use the R1800 as their standard printer.One problem with the printer is that it has somewhat of a drinking problem -not so much while printing, but every time it is powered up after a period of non-use it goes automatically into a cleaning cycle, whether needed or not, and that consumes a lot of ink. To overcome this, I leave my printer on around the clock. It uses very little power when idle (2 Watts -less than a night light). To prevent printhead clogging, I print at least a nozzle check printout (using very little ink) every day, and so far I have not had any problems with either clogging, or excessive ink consumption. To protect the printer from possible damage caused by power outages or surges, I have it connected to a UPS Battery backup surge protector.
Although I gave a 5 star rating to this printer, based on its superior output, the caveat still remains about its excessive ink consumption if turned off and on frequently. I do not hesitate to recommend this printer to any savvy photographer, though a beginner is likely to face a rather steep, but worthwhile and not impossible learning curve.

I agree completely with all the positive reviews and I used HP printers up until recently. The positive reviews are not overstated. I do have one thing to add. If you read all of the reviews, you will notice that the only negative reviews were made by non-photographers. This is important.The Epson R1800 is made for pro photographers and serious amateurs. As a photographer I know put it, HP printers are designed for mass consumer use. If you want to print out some pictures to put in your scrapbook, send grandmother, or give a friend, get an HP. If you plan to sell your pictures, you need an Epson R1800 or R2400.
The Epson 1800 will produce prints that look like they came from a photo lab, reproduce file detail, and reproduce the colors in the original file to a degree that only an expert could tell the difference. This is not an overstatement. To the trained eye, the improvement over current HP photo printers is dramatic.
The Epson 1800 is, however, much harder to use, and for this level of color accuracy, must be used with something that corrects your monitors output to display accurate colors, such as Pantone''s Eye-One. You must use Epson inks and papers, download the latest driver and paper profiles, use the software settings properly, and you must use it with Photo Shop or Photo Elements to do the printing. This is why I state that this printer is for pros and serious amateurs and if you just want to print nice pictures, use an HP.
On a final note, if you read a lot of high end printer specifications, it gets very confusing. Epson produces several high end printers. They all produce professional level results, and the differences in the photos they produce, are so subtle that only a professional can tell the difference. Even then, experienced users can compensate for those differences and produce results that are virtually indistinguishable from other high end printers. In the end, it all boils down to the fact that color and print quality are a matter of your perception and preferences. The Epson 1800 has the power to adjust your photos to look just the way want.

Scanning: You can tell the difference between the original and the copy. I would guess that there is about a 10 percent (or less) loss in clarity. My other HP scanner/ printers have been very close to original quality. That may not be important to you.
Possible Problem: This machine is a well constructed, professional quality machine. It is bulky and heavy for the average person. Unless you are physically active, more than six feet tall with long arms, don''t try to handle this 60 plus pound item by your self. Get a friend to help. Put the printer on a very stabile table (preferably a heavy duty printer stand). A card table is not strong enough.Possible Installation Problem: When installing the Imaging Drum, be careful that you line the drum up with the slots provided in the machine. The drum will slide down the slots easily to the bottom. Once at the bottom, press firmly down. It will click once it is in place. The instructions will not tell you to do this. Try to bring down the front cover. If the front cover will not come down and fit flush with the printer body, you have not seated the Imagine Drum correctly.
Paper Placement: The CD describes the HP 2840 which has two paper supply areas. Not even the written instructions tell you about the main tray. It is not a tray at all. On the face of the printer below the "HP" logo, is a finger slot, pull outward. That is your paper tray. At the front edge, pull out the tray extension. Then there is another extension by rotating a panel on top of the tray outward to provide full length paper support. In fact, the support extends about 3/4" beyond the paper.
Would I purchase this machine? I''m pleased with the machine. It is a typical HP quality machine. I haven''t tried it''s other features. For my purposes, it is fine. I don''t see any need for the HP2840. If you are working with two different qualities of paper, then perhaps the HP2840 is the machine you need.
PROBLEM:
Don''t look for a manual. HP has included the manual in it''s program, according to them. Ask Tech support to direct you to the manual. I haven''t found it yet. If they have taken the trouble to provide it on a CD, the could have printed it. This is one area which makes me unhappy.

Ok, for the price, this can''t be beat for a small office. However, some caveats. First, it is pretty noisy, not "I can''t hear myself think" kind of noisy, but if it sits next to someone all day and gets heavily used, they will find it annoying. Second, our printers power supply shut down a week ago (about 4-5 weeks after we purchased it) and we are hoping to see a technician with a replacement part today. So we have been without the use of this printer for a week. Luckily we had a couple little inkjets scattered throughout the office that allowed us to get by.Finally, be careful when you order, because this item did not include the 250 sheet paper tray. I caught this just as I was about to order and added the paper tray for another $100 or so. Pretty stupid to sell it without it (considering that it is intended for an office environment), but that is how it is marketed.

We have five people in our office, all run Windows XP, one runs a Vista machine too. On average, once every two weeks we have to reload the software on our PCs to make the Scan To function work. Occasionally we lose the ability to print, and have to reload the software for that too. It might work okay in a small office with peer-to-peer networking, but in our corporate branch office it does not work well. I''m about ready to buy my own scanner out-of-pocket so I won''t have to waste my time on this machine.It is noisy. The color and black cartridges are installed in a carousel. When you print a document with color, the carousel rotates for each cartridges, making a clunking noise. I''m glad it''s down the hall a bit. Ours also does not duplex (scan/print both sides), a huge waste of paper and space for printed material, and wasted time for scanning two-sided documents.

I bought this to replace a Xerox. This is much slower, much louder and doesn''t print as well.It has lasted longer than the Xerox did so there is a plus, print costs are a little higher.
This machine is ideal for a back room that is not occupied because it is loud. Not unhappy with the purchase, just would have gone a different direction if I knew how loud it was.
Also, the is constantly calibrating itself, adding to the noise already mentioned in the other reviews.
PS on March 16, 2011: Still no driver for Snow Leopard! This is now a $1000 brick, good only for printing (but not envelopes) and one-page-at-a-time copying.
I plan to sell it and never buy HP anything again.

We have had our MFC-8640 for about four years and was prompted to write a review after the "wiz kid" helped me fix the toner sensor fault. Ours has worked more or less perfectly since we bought it and I recently put it on a print server, purchased separately, that facilitates use throughout the home network. It does "blink" the lights a bit when starting up, but I keep it in sleep mode most of the time so it''s really not an annoyance. 33K Fax is faster than some of the newer models. The alternate paper feed is a mystery, and we don''t print envelopes. Occasionally we print labels using the tray. Scanner does well, even copying color to B/W. And as mentioned the duplexer is great.BTW the toner sensor "eye" is on the wall of the toner/roller cavity on the right side; it is a little lens recessed in the black plastic 3 or 4 inches from the front. Fixyourprinter dot com & Black tape fixed mine. Saved me Hundred$$. Buy the toner from Amazon.

I have owned this printer for well over 5+ years and use it on a regular basis in my home office. I purchased the separate network card but I never installed it because I was able to plug it in to my home network through my NAS. Now all the computers I have connected to my home network can use the printer (provided the print drivers have been installed). If you don''t have a NAS at home which most people don''t, you should be able to plug it right into your wireless router, provided it has a USB port.I am one of those people who need to print out things to review on actual paper rather than on a screen. This means I go through a lot of paper. The document feeder is something I use often because I reuse paper by printing on both sides. The document feeder has also been helpful when I print shipping labels on sticky paper or directly on envelopes.
The scanner is another feature I use a lot. You can use either the flatbed or the handy feeder. It comes with Control Center software which I have used to control how the scanned docs should look, how it is saved amd where it should go. I have found that the same things can be accomplished with Adobe Acrobat or micrsoft scanning setup which is standard for most PCs running XP and later. The fax works great, but I don''t use it too often so I''m not familiar with all the bells and whistles I know it''s capable of.
Now here is perhaps the most important aspect and why I give it such a high rating:
TONER! TONER! TONER!
The toner is easy to find and each cartridge prints anywhere from 1500 5000 pages, depending on which cartridge is selected. My cartridges lasts even longer because I have my default print setting on draft mode which still comes out dark enough to fit 95% of my printing needs. The cost per page is super low when you compare it to others such as HP, cannon, Epson, etc.

I''ve had this all in one printer/copier/scanner for 5 years now and it still works great. It has been very reliable and I experienced paper jams only twice. For use with my Mac, the scanner feature works via software controls and not the on-machine buttons.My only complaint is the original original on board memory of 16MB was woefully inadequate. It would take forever to print, and then it was one page at a time instead of the 21ppm. I eventually upgraded the memory by adding a 128MB module. After that it printed fine. Newer models are essentially similar, with just a few upgrades like 32MB memory and 30ppm.

After the first initial hour of use I can only say the following:
1. Installation was EASY
2. The device is very compact, I love it! Who would even think it performs the way it does being so small.
3. This scanner scans like it''s on steriods (in a good way)! It''s very FAST. Almost too fast, sheets can get a little "cluttered" from time to time. But honestly I do not care, I might need to get the hang of it also.
4. From what I noticed so far scan quality is pretty good to (only done color pdfs). I have it on the lowest setting to preserve some hard disc space and they still come out very good.

I actually picked this fax machine up at a local retailer when I saw it in a weekly advertisement. It was 30 bucks after rebate. I thought it would be a great value since I occasionally (but not often) need to fax for the business I run out of my home.I''m very technical, so I was pleasantly surprised by all of the features backed into this inexpensive unit.
I''m highly skeptical of any inexpensive printing device, since manufacturers usually get your money on the replacement ink cartridges. I had no intention of using this machine for printing anything -only SENDING faxes.
I was aware that fax resolution is always low compared to resolution of scanning a document or photo copying it. But, I figured all fax machines would be equally "low resolution". How tough can it be to hit a low standard?
The first thing I did was to send myself a fax by directing it to an incoming fax service I use (j2.com). I was disappointed. Upon digging into the specs of several fax machines I noticed that most decent fax machines provide 300x300 resolution (that seems to be the max...but is also very common). This fax machine provides less (note fax and copy resolutions are different).
I also noticed fax speeds are different: This fax machine advertises 15 sec per page. HPs I''ve looked at range from 3-6 seconds per page. HPs also handle color faxes. Entry-level HPs seem to run about $99 retail.
I also noticed that when I picked up the chinsy plastic handset I had static/noise in the background. Not obnoxious, but noticeable.
All in all, I''ll pay a little more for something better. But if you don''t care about fax resolution or speed, this may be fine for you.

This fax is perfect for the home. Takes up little space, inexpensive to operate and very reliable.It is NOT a business machine on any level. As with most things in life you get what you pay for, and this fax provides great value for its price.
Pros: plain paper, small footprint, easy to use
Cons: transfer cartridge annoying to replace. We rerolled it twice and it is still good (cheap, I know, but then I bought a cheap fax...)

So I will tell you about the customer service.I called the 800 number at 3PM est. and told them my fax mach was missing the curly phone cord for the hand set. the lady asked me to please hold came back about 3 min later and said they would send a replacement cord. i thought to myself that was TOO EASY. the very next day at 11AM i pulled out of the driveway of my house and noticed a package on the doorstep. I though wow what could that be? YES it was the phone cord. Brother send it next day air I had it in hand in less than 20 hours.. i wish sony had service like that.. good luck

i knew that it was refurbished or remanufactured but my printer is 5 years old and i decided to take a chance .
first when they arrived i found that both had the wrong color guard on the cartridge .
the black ink cartridge had a blue guard and the color ink cartridge had a black guard .
this made every thing confusing because DELL uses the color blue to let you know that this is the color cartridge .
i ran the dell print test and all the color grids passed and all the color was dry with no leaks or smears .
so far my only complaint is the LOW INK ALERT , my DELL printer has not recognized these remanufactured cartridges .
every time i check my ink level it still shows LOW ink from the old cartridges .

I liked that right out of the box they had a substantial feel to them (like a standard weight card stock). The strings themselves are pretty standard with little flare, but lock making them perfect for price tags. However, because they are not attached, you can also swap them out for colored ribbon, yarn, or string, which I''ve been doing. I would give 5 stars for the product itself. Though I do somewhat wish it had a glossy finish to it, though I have no idea whether that would make it smudge when printed on.
What is dragging this review down to 3 stars is the experience of actually creating the tags. Avery does provide ample templates online, including some with graphics already included. However, all the templates are in Microsoft Word, which I don''t find to be very user friendly for this type of thing. When you are just making standard address labels it is perfectly sufficient, but when you''re making branded products like a tag it''s not very easy to drag and drop graphics and do different treatments. In addition, some of the files, when opened on my computer were all messed up text and images were hanging off the label and all over the place. Basically, you have to expect to spend sometime creating these if you want them to look professional and a beginning understanding of Microsoft word is needed.
Edited to add: I finally found the online interface thanks to some helpful commenters. I found it MUCH more user friendly than the word downloads, but I was pretty disapointed with the templates available. Everything seemed a bit outdated and clipart friendly which seemed like a shame to me since I have found great free printables elsewhere on the net (they just don''t work with this template). I expected a bit more since these are billed as products for small business owners.
I think they''d be much better off if they created their own software program or had an online interface for customizing labels, rather than trying to use a program that really wasn''t meant for involved design. At the very least, it would be nice if they offered files that could be opened in a program like Photoshop.I also think some of the graphics and styles available don''t look as polished as what you can already find at craft stores or patterns available on blogs and sites like Martha Stewart.
Overall, I think this product is a great idea, I think it is just a shame that the interface to create the labels isn''t more user friendly. I''m hoping that as I spend more time playing around with these I will get better at it, but for now, it seems like there is a bit of a learning curve to create something that realizes my vision.
