This product didn''t save me any money, but it did arrive in 2 days. Anyone who has a cannon printer knows you can''t even scan or copy without ink, so to receive them in 2 days was awesome. They work too.

Want 5 Pack OEM Canon PGI 225 / CLI 226 Genuine Ink Cartridges Full Set Cmykpk Discount?

These appear to be genuine Canon cartridges delivered "loose" with the usual shrink wrap, but without the retail cardboard packaging. It''s not a "full set" for my MG6120, as it''s missing the Gray, but I knew that when I ordered it. The three cartridges I''ve used so far have worked correctly.

This was a fix it all pack that I needed for my printer. I was low on 2 of the inks and out of the rest and this pack filled the bill. Now my printer is working again and everyone is thrilled.

The paper is great. Regular, great Hammermill, but I DON''T WANT HOLES IN IT!

Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2436B002)

Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer
  • All-in-one device can fax, copy, scan, and print
  • Built-in Ethernet jack allows simple connection to a network
  • Prints at a maximum of 9600 x 2400 dpi for great photos
  • Built-in memory card reader and 2.5-inch display allows for photo prints directly form a memory card
  • Automatic document feeder enables automatic duplexing

My brief observations seem to indicate that the MX850 really doesn''t improve upon the MP830 in some important areas.

I''ve owned the Canon MP830 for almost a year and and I just bought the Canon MX850 for a friend, so this is a direct user comparison. The 830 has been 100% reliable, producing excellent scans, prints, copies, and faxes. The MX850 is shorter in height, but otherwise just as bulky and heavy as the 830. Canon seems to be using a less robust scanner in the 850 than in the older MP830. Scans on the 830 are consistently over 4 times as fast: a 300 dpi 8.5x11" import scan into Photoshop CS3 took about 7 seconds with the 830 and about 33 seconds with the 850. The 830 wins in the noise category as well: it''s roughly 60% quieter than the 850 when scanning. The 850 produces an annoying high pitched tone while the 830 has more of a low "murmer" sound. The 850, to be fair, will not be considered to be overly loud for most environments. With scanning, the color reproduction seems fairly close between the two machines, though I''m getting more color accuracy from the 830. Copies on the 830 produced more accurate colors, too: a copy of a TIME magazine cover on a matt photo paper (with settings set to "Matt Photo Paper" and "High") yielded extremely accurate reproductions of the original, while the the 850 veered too far toward the yellow end of the spectrum. Both produced excellent detail, though. Scans of dot-screen images were well rendered with the 830, while the 850 exhibited substantial moire effects.

Not sure about energy consumption comparisons though the 850''s scanner seems to be using a more compact, (newer technology?) low lumens light-producing element than the very bright 830, so it probably uses less power.

Both machines will not disappoint, but with the advantage of my brief side-by-side comparison I''d recommend that you save $40 bucks and get the MP830. They both use the same ink cartridges. One last observation: the 850''s LCD screen has a much higher pixel count, but that''s only one small improvement amid the 830''s superior traits.

3/18/2008 Update: I''ve learned that the MX850 is using "contact image sensor" technology (CIS) where as the MP830 is using the more common "charged-coupled devices" (CCD) technology. For those with an interest in the tech aspects I''ve included some info I found online:

"Most of large format scanners in use today use CCD (charge-coupled devices) as the primary data capture element in their construction. Recently this position has started to be challenged by the lower cost CIS (contact image sensor) technologies, which have come mainly from the small flatbed scanner market. The traditional CCD or camera scanner is able to produce a very high number of colours from the scanned original and copes with folded documents reasonably well. These scanners tend to be preferred where the image to be scanned is either photographic or has extensive use of tones and shading. CIS scanners have the advantage in providing all the optics in a space of 20 mm or so, which in the CCD scanner equivalent would occupy more like 600 mm. The secondary advantage is that CIS scanners have no need for magnification, lenses or a rigid frame a major saving in construction costs and weight. However, CIS scanners do not do so well when scanning very pale colours or photographs."

This printer is an upgrade to my Canon Pixma iP6000. The iP6000 is excellent for printing photos as well as all daily stuff. I was concerned that a multi-function printer would not print photo''s as well. I was wrong!!!

This multi-function printer is as good, maybe even a little better at photos than the iP6000 was. I have only had it a couple of days, so I have not tried everything out yet. Regular print quality is excellent. Copying is great. Scanning should come out just as good as copying, but I''ve yet to try it. Photo printing is excellent.

If your looking at this just remember to consider its size. I don''t think it''s really any bigger than most other all-in-ones but it is bigger than my last printer.

I went with the MX850 for 2 reasons. (1) Networking capability and (2) Canon technology. I am very pleased with my decision!!

The set-up went without any problems at all. The first computer I hooked it up to is a desktop running XP home via USB. Installed perfectly.

Next was a laptop running Vista via network. NOTE: As instructed by the instructions you must attach the USB cable to the FIRST computer that is being installed on the network before you connect it via the network. After it is completely installed you no longer need that USB connection. It will connect via the network. Yes, my laptop is connected wirelessly. It works great!!! For any additional computers on the network all you have to do is install the software and connect it via the network. NO USB required for all additional network computers. The installation software is very easy to understand. There are only 3 install options. (1) Install to computer via dedicated USB connection. (2) Install FIRST computer on a network (must use USB this ONE time only). (3) Install additional computers on network. Thats it...

As I said it''s only been a couple of days so I have yet to try everything out, but so far NO disappointments. It seems to be a very well built simple to use machine. Software seems to be running fine on XP and Vista. Not sure where the pricing will go on this unit but, Amazon dropped their price $45 only a couple days after I ordered it. I was happy at full retail, but at $235 you can''t go wrong !!!

The one thing I do recommend is to use Canon photo paper when printing photos. I found that I got the best results this way. That was on the iP6000, but I''m sure the MX850 will be the same way.

Good luck with your purchase. Hope this helps a little.

EDIT:

It has been a few more days since original install.

During set-up on another computer on the network it would not install. I called tech support for help. The problem was my computer NOT the printer. Tech support was great!!!!!! They walked me through step by step checking everything till we found the problem. Canon has their support in the US and they have a dedicated department for networking. It was actually a pleasure calling them for help. Usually I hate to call for support. You never know where the call is being routed. Very nice to know you can get quick easy help if needed.

Also since I got a chance to play a little more with the printer I discovered how quick it is. I was happy with the iP6000 print speed, but the MX850 makes me realize how slow it was. I didn''t time it, but it printed a 4x6 photo very quickly!! Another nice feature is the door where the paper comes out will open automatically when you print.

So far no regrets!!! Don''t be afraid to call tech support if needed. They are great!

We ordered this printer last Saturday nite and amazon had it delivered on Tuesday afternoon with free super-saver delivery. Thank you amazon.

We are upgrading to this multi-function from a LexMark X6170, which served us quite well for 4 years. The Canon PIXMA MX850 is much heavier than the LexMark. If you''ve back problems, it might be worth asking the delivery guy to put it near to where you want it.

Although the packaging for the printer is quite simple, there are way too many plastic tapes to be removed. This is probably because there are many moving parts and sub-parts for this printer. Luckily Canon has included a simple instruction sheet for assmebling the printer and it does help if you follow it right.

NOTE: The packaging does not include a USB cable. We used the one from our old printer. The reason Canon does not include a USB cable is because this is a fully networked printer; that means all its functionalities can work over Ethernet. However, you do need the USB cable for initial setup.

Network setup is a 2 step process. For the first PC, you need to have a USB cable connection and then you can connect via Ethernet. Subsequent PC''s don''t need USB for network configuration. My printer and first PC are connected to a Netgear Wireless Ethernet bridge, which also connects to my WiFi LAN. My second PC is a laptop is which connected to my WiFi LAN. Canon has included a separate Users guide for network setup which really helps.

Print quality is quite good though not the same as a laser printer. Given that this printer supports dual side printing, using a good quality inkjet printing paper such as a 24lb, 115brightness will be worth it. There are 2 sources of paper feeds, a rear tray and a cassette. Both trays support all the same paper sizes, except for business cards which are available only on the rear tray. You can use either trays by pressing the "switch feed" button on the printer control panel or from their print software running on the PC. The print speed for one-sided printing is very fast, for both black and white as well as color printing. However, two-sided printing is quite slow. There is a noticeable pause between printing the two sides, and one would almost be tempted to pull the printout out of the output tray after printing one side.

As a photo printer, I think the quality is acceptable. I''vent used it for any scenic/outdoor photo''s. But it is ok for identity-card/passport photo''s, which you need in a jiffy and don''t consume too much ink. For other photo''s, you are better off using Costco or Walgreens anyways.

The MX850 supports dual sided scanning over the network. The Automatic Document Feeder(ADF) is supposed to hold 30-35 sheets, though it looks quite slim. The scan quality is good though not exceptional. Again dual sided scanning is much slower than single sided scanning, but with ADF you can move on to other tasks, while the MX850 goes about scanning. For multiple photo''s on the flatbed, it will create separate jpeg files. However, if you scan two set of documents with a time lag in between, they will be scanned to the same pdf. However, their print software does allow you to delete individual pages from the pdf, which is useful if not all pages in your original document set are two-sided. You can also re-arrange the pages if they are not in the order you want them to be in, using the Canon software.

The copying is the same as scanning followed by printing; so there is not much to write about it. I''vent tried FAXing yet.

On the whole, I''m very satisfied with the printer although it has just been a few days of usage. The printer has good features and their software is feature rich too. My only peeves about the MX850 are that it does not support Linux. Also, it has these ghostly/spooky movements and noises that it will do, probably because the print-head is being reset, even if it is sitting idle for some time. It also seems to vibrate noticeably while printing; though not so much as to topple a cup of coffee. A stable printer stand/table would be much recommended. Since the printer seems to be from the same family as MP830, I also expect to be quite generous in consuming ink.

All said and done, I would recommend this printer to anyone who is not a heavy user of print functionality. It will get small jobs done to more than your satisfaction.

Want Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2436B002) Discount?

I was initially going to buy an HP all-in-one (L7580, L7680, or C7280) to replace my HP OfficeJet G85, which would not scan with Vista. I was not comfortable with the HP customer reviews, though, as they confirmed some of my own doubts from seeing the products in stores. I kept looking and came across the new Canon MX850 and decided this was what I had been looking for. This product is worth the full list price, so Amazon''s discount and great shipping made it an even better value.

I set up the MX850 on my home network, which includes a Linksys Wireless G router, a Vista laptop, and an XP desktop. The setup worked perfectly the first time, and all functions work flawlessly from both PCs. You use a cable connection from the MX850 to the router, but this is not a problem for my setup. I did not have to call tech support, but it appears from other reviews that it is excellent, and in English.

Print speed is excellent, and the photo quality is also excellent. I printed some photos using the sample 4x6 paper that came with the printer, and they are as good as the same photos printed by the Kodak Gallery web site. I also like the included duplex (two-sided) printing, which is extra on many other products in this price range. The control panel is well designed and intuitive. The unit seems to be solid, durable, and well-constructed.

There a few minor points for improvements. First, the Canon takes a little more overhead time than the HP OfficeJet to clean or check the print heads or ink tanks, so sometimes you wait a short while before it actually starts to print. Second, when you set up your printing specs on your PC, the specs are not communicated to the MX850, so you have to set them up there as well. For example, if you''ve been printing on regular paper and now you want to print photos, you have to set the paper size, paper type (glossy, etc.), and print quality on your PC and then also set them on the MX850. Third, the standard print quality for text is not quite as dark black as the HP OfficeJet, but you only notice it if they are side by side. Last, the setup process adds a ton of software to your PC, including eight new desktop icons, two system tray icons, and five new Canon folders in the start menu. None of these are real problems, just observations.

Overall, I rate this as an excellent product for price, functionality, and construction. Buy it!

The Canon mx850 has some great features that very few printers have. I use the print and copy feature the most (actually I haven''t even used the fax or scanner yet) and I love the fact that I can do double sided copies. The copies have been suitable for me at this point, but I haven''t had to have a critical eye to judge them.

At first, I was pretty disappointed with the printing aspect of the mx850. The text looked like it came from a poor inkjet, even at a "high" quality setting. My old printer, the HP Photosmart 1115 (I had it for 5 years) definitely printed better text, which I found odd since it had 5 year old technology. I was finally able to figure out how to get crisp clean text and better quality photos (I''ve been trying to print my marketing materials such as brochure/rack cards). In the Printer Settings, if you click on Media Type: Photo Paper Pro and then click on Print Quality Custom and then ''Set'', set it to "1" being the highest. This made my rack cards look so much better than using any other media setting and quality setting. Actually, I went through each media type to see ifyou can set it at "1" quality, and I think the Photo Paper Pro was the only choice. Which means that Canon wants you to think that Photo Paper Pro is such a good quality paper that your prints look better, but really what''s going on is that the printer won''t print high quality prints unless you select that media type.

So, I was going to give it 3 stars until I found the ability to do that. I can''t judge the faxes and scanning aspects, but I won''t use those as much and I don''t have a high expectation of them. I just wanted a good printer and copier that can fax and scan.

Hope this helps....

I wanted a solid and easy to use calculator. This one fits the bill perfectly. I debated purchasing the lighter weight Sharp model, but am glad I selected this one. It does have a significant ''footprint'' so you need a roomy desk, but it is quiet and there is no wobble when I use it, which I find irritating with smaller and lighter machines.

Prices of desk-top calculators continue to come down. But the quality of the products remains high. This is a wonderful calculator. I have been using Sharp products all my life...and will continue to do so!

My only complaint is that the product was pictured as ''off-white'' in color; but what I received was all black. Not a huge deal; but I would like to have known prior to purchasing.

Canon imageCLASS D480 Laser All-in-One Printer (2711B054AA)

Canon imageCLASS D480 Laser All-in-One Printer
  • 2-sided Copying, Printing, Faxing, and Scanning
  • Copy and Print in black and white at 23 ppm
  • Quick First Print provides first copy in approximately 9 seconds
  • 50-sheet Automatic Document Feeder
  • Networking, Super G3 Fax, and 250 sheet paper cassette

This device is basically identical to the MF4370dn which is heavily (and positively) reviewed. As near as I can tell there are three differences between the two units:

1) The D480 is beige, the MF4370 black

2) The D480 has am improved document feeder

3) The D480 has more complete duplexing than the MF4370.

I was actually alerted to #3 by an Amazon review. You can put a stack of two-sided documents into the feeder and produce a set of two-sided duplicates. According to the Amazon reviewer the MF4370 will take two-sided docs in the feeder but can only produce single-sided docs in response.

I haven''t tried this with a thick stack of documents but onesie/twosie stuff seems to work great, at least with plain copy paper. I tried duplex-copying a mortgage statement printed on thick paper and the feeder choked on it.

Copying is fast, quiet and sharp. I''m delighted by it, actually. Duplexing is really simple. Manually scanning two different sheets onto one two-sided document or just copying a two-sided document are both very easy. The biggest limitation is the size of the platen. I didn''t think I''d even notice this but if you''re used to throwing down a book or something of a full-size copy machine you''ll feel a bit cramped. If you want to scan oversized stuff you''re of out of luck, but that''s true of every machine in this price range.

The D480 seems to be a perfectly capable printer and supports full duplexing right from software. I do most of my printing to an HP 3600dn and don''t see that changing except for printing music, where duplexing will be really nice to have. Network printing was really easy to set up.

Scanning is where this device falls a bit flat, and that''s due almost entirely to the software, not the hardware. Even thought it has a Vista logo on the box it still relies on TWAIN drivers so it doesn''t integrate with "Scanners and Cameras" under Vista. The software they ship to scan with is hokey but seems to work. I guess I can hope that Canon will ship updated drivers but I won''t hold my breath. I am a little peeved at MSFT for letting Canon put a Vista logo on the box.

Network scanning is a joke on this device (same as with MF4370). The process for doing this is just stupid, and the file transfer is ungodly slow. I was hoping to just pop some docs into the ADF and press a button and have them show up but you can''t really do it in the backgrond and the file transfer times are godawful slow. This is partly due to the size of the data but not completely it''s REALLY REALLY SLOW. To give you an idea it took something like a minute or two to transfer an 88KB image. That''s KILOBYTES. I think the scanner must send a raw dump over the network which is processed on the host machine. In any case, it''s tricky to set up and basically unusable. Note to Canon: "Scan to USB Flash Drive" would be a far better feature.

On the bright side there is support for scanning several pages from the ADF into a single (or multiple) PDFs. There is some sort of OCR software but I haven''t tried to use it yet. We hope to scan bills and whatnot and toss the originals I guess I''ll see how well that works out.

I haven''t tried the faxing capability. Having a halfway decent ADF will be a godsend for sending contracts or NDAs around, but I''ll probably rely more on scanning to PDF than actually faxing. I never receive faxes I use online services like eFax.

Finally I have to ding the awful documentation. It''s really quite bad I had to call tech support to try to figure out network scanning and found out that even though I didn''t want to use USB scanning I still had to do a USB install. Oops. If you want to do anything non-trivial you''re going to be experimenting and cursing a bit. Canon''s tech support was actually quite good, but better docs would have saved them the cost of the call.

So, as the title says, the hardware is quite good for $250 but the software side is a little lacking. Even though I poo-poo the device a lot I am pretty pleased with it. Based on what I''ve seen so far I can recommend it for SOHO use if network scanning or tight Vista integration is not going to be a high-priority item for you. I wouldn''t recommend using it as a primary departmental printer because the input tray is dinky, but I don''t think you''ll find a better device under $500.

Warning: LONG review ahead prepare for detour if not seeking the details on this tour! You''ve been warned. :-)

The decision to go with this Canon D480 all-in-one printer was a gamble for me. My previous printer was a Canon color all-in-one ink jet unit (MP360 ) that died prematurely and went to an early grave after barely 3 years of very lite use. I was really concerned about buying another Canon device or ink jet model. The root cause for failure on the MP360 was it''s uncorrectable ink pump/head issue, so I opted to return to the B&W toner cartridge models. I learned that no matter how easy it might be to take off a few cover panels, these Canon''s are NOT designed for easy service and repair (even with my tech background). No wonder they try to charge $$$ if you consider getting one fixed instead of replacing it. They don''t want to fix ''em either! HA

I need the capability for an occasional fax and scan in addition to the obvious printing. Deciding not to buy the individual components, I reviewed all the multi-function units I could find. Unless I was willing to shell out some serious $$$ and buy a business model, my choices all hovered in the $300-500 range. This model might be ok for a small or home office (SOHO), but the plastic materials and strength of the components are NOT like those found on previous devices. With any type of heavy use, I can NOT see this model standing up to any bumps or long term wear. For example, this unit has a flimsy tab that extends at the end of the output tray (necessary to use or the papers end up on the floor) and one little bump could break it right off. The ADF and scan cover on top feels like it was made as lightly and cheaply as possible. You''ll have to treat this unit easily and carefully or it probably won''t hold up. It might be a move to reduce weight and material costs, but it borders on the overdone effort. Sadly, many/most of the models in this price range have the same anemic disease of reduction.

So far, printing output has been of a decent quality, as expected for a toner model, including the handy duplex/2-sided feature. Definitely not publishing grade or quality but ok for internal business/office use or at home. I''m still on my "starter" cartridge (why couldn''t they just put a full cartridge in when shipping?!) after a few months of lite printing. Power-up from a cold start is quick and just a little noisy for around 10 seconds. Wake-up is also quick when tossing over a print request. The unit is not very quiet, but can be tolerated if the duty cycle is short.

In order to use the web-access features for checking the settings, you need to install the TCP/IP-Networked connection. If you use the USB connection, you won''t get this functionality (I''ve installed both USB and TCP/IP connections on my system). Even though I downloaded all the latest patches and software from Canon''s site, I didn''t need to update the firmware as it arrived with the latest version available. Supposedly this fixes the bug for setting a default mode (copy vs. fax vs. scan) for those printing over a network. I didn''t find the included software to be great, user-friendly, or with helpful features, but your mileage may vary. You won''t be missing out on much if not installed at all. Others have noted issues (confirmed) with an indexing feature in one of the programs (takes forever on app startup, best to avoid).

I''ve have problems with the very temperamental faxing capability as well as the volume control when attempting to fax. Even though there are settings to turn down the volume, the choices do NOT make a difference. Either the speaker is on at a very loud volume (maybe useful for troubleshooting, but annoying for anyone nearby) or muted. My previous Canon didn''t have nearly the issues when sending and using a voip (vonage''s version) connection for a phone line. However, if you run an Internet search, you''ll find that for most people now using a G3-mode fax unit on voip, it is gamble. Sometimes it''s going to work if you drop down the speed to transmit at 9600 baud and turn off ECM (error correction), and many times it will not work at all when trying to send. For being able to handle an analog quality connection and all the "within spec" (ITU, T-38 spec) noise in doing so, I find this unit just isn''t cutting it on voip. I called Canon''s tech support and reached a helpful and courteous person in the afternoon. Another call to Canon''s tech support in the early evening left me disappointed with the attitude and help received so 50% grade, not so good (but typical). To be fair, it''s not all Canon''s issues when dealing with phone connections. However, it looks like I''m stuck with a less-than-acceptable grade for these issues.

Scanning worked for basic 8.5x11 sheets, but I ran into problems initially with the set-up and configuration of the software to receive scans. It would not automagically configure in Windows as it didn''t want to recognize the supported device. Oddly enough I didn''t receive an error when the software was installed the first time. The software''s testing feature confirmed the communication was not working. Deleting the software and rediscovering the device again was necessary before I could install and use the software to take in a scan. Scan quality at 300 dpi was a bit poor, but no surprise there. I think the whole scanning feature also dropped in quality from the previous model. *sigh* I didn''t test it much and realize others have put it to more rigorous use and also found a few other concerns.

Reading the user manual left me seeking additional sources for answers. I even installed and tried the more inclusive "e-manual" on my computer. I was still left wondering about a few things, and thus my calls to tech support. Documentation is written in understandable English, but don''t expect any detailed explanations whatsoever. The same goes for the unit''s limited display window. Most features and setting seem to be randomly organized, but able to be hunted down if you take the time to search. A "secret" feature that wasn''t mentioned anywhere in the documentation was reached by pressing the " menu " key followed by the " # " key. It''s an extended listing and group of advanced settings. Be careful what you change in here or you may find yourself talking with a grouchy tech support person @ Canon for poor-quality help.

By the way, I inquired and was told there is NO command or button to reset your device back to defaults or to erase all your personal information in the unit. Today''s electronic devices, not just computers, use chips and drives to store or cache your data and use logs. My fax log shows all the numbers I''ve attempted to send to (and most in failure!). It supposedly rolls over after the 60th fax, but no way to clear the log. I was told to leave the unit unplugged for "a couple hours" to possibly erase all settings (??!!??). I haven''t tried it yet or proved this to be correct. Keep this in mind should you be considering giving this unit back, selling it, or giving it away your info may be still inside. This is a known and documented security issue for today''s intelligent, data-handling products, so keep it in mind. Contact the manufacturers for info and procedures for clearing a device to protect yourself. It might be an "all or nothing" wipe, so apparently Canon wasn''t concerned about your time in set-up or your privacy/data protection either. Shame!

A huge rebate was available at the time I purchased this model at it''s discounted "sale" pricing. It is a JOKE that this product is passed off as a $1,000+ MSRP unit and then discounted heavily for it''s "normal" retail/sale price. This model may have a lot of features (as all-in-one printers all do!), but no way would I put it in that category or ranking of a $1000+ machine.

The unit works for now, but I would reconsider if I had to do it again. Definitely not the worst choice, but room for improvement.

My scanner & laser printer wouldn''t work with my new Windows Vista 64-bit operating system. I loved my laser printer because the toner seemed to last a very long time compared to my photo printer. So I looked for a laser multifunction. Canon is rated best in most printer reviews. But I also wanted one that was networkable so that I could print from my laptop without having to turn on my desktop computer.

Well, I''ve had the D480 over 2 months and I really like it. It''s like having an office copier, laser printer and scanner next to my desk. (I have not used the fax function so can''t report on it.) For all it does, it does not have a large footprint and space is limited for me. It comes alive and copies or prints very quickly. Everything I have printed and scanned has been very clean and professional document quality. The duplex copy, print & scan is a real plus, and I have a bunch of files that I want to scan into electronic format. Paper handling has been perfect. I am very happy with its perforance.

Only problems I had was with documentation. 1)Network Configuration was unclear and incomplete. After repeated efforts, I called Canon support. They were excellent, spoke English, were not in a rush to get me off the line, and knew exactly how to walk be through the network installation. That support is worth a lot these days. By the way, the rest of the documentation was good. 2) Scanning Software is minimalist when scanning on a network configuration and the documentation was unclear. It works but is bare bones. (The unit can be hooked up directly to a PC with a USB cable and the software for that kind of configuration seemed more robust and user friendly.) Maybe I''ll purchase a separate software package for scanning.

Bottom Line: I am very happy with this purchase in spite of the documentation and software, especially since I got it for $285 through a Amazon reseller versus the $400 list.

I have owned this printer for about a week. I bought a Brother MFC7840W which for various reasons I returned, and I will explain all of that below.

First, the things I like about this printer.

It is quiet. The Brother had a very loud fan which ran just about all the time. I do not even think the Canon has a fan. It has a hibernate mode which pulls 3 watts of electricity, which is quite good. By default it goes into sleep mode in 5 minutes.

The Brother dimmed the lights when it worked, the Canon does not.

The display is easy to read at any hight, the Brother required you to be about 5-4 to read it and I am 6-2. I had to squat.

The pages come out only slightly distorted, better than the Brother, but not as good as the 10 year old HP I am getting rid of. Then again, the $5000 HP printer we have at work distorts the paper about the same.

Paper feeding and duplex mode work fine and that is a nice feature.

Less flimsy than the Brother but I have to admit I paid almost twice as much.

Controls are reasonably easy to use, scan and fax are not difficult.

Things I do not like:

Software is rough and not especially pleasant to use, the Brother was better in that regard. No way to control the machine from the computer (other than scanning) unless you do so through the network. I do have a home network but I have the machine connected with USB, so the web-based control program cannot be used.

There is an issue with paper alignment that some have mentioned, the Brother did not have this problem. Sure enough, it is not exactly parallel with the edge but this can be fine tuned by shifting the paper in the tray and worst case, a strip or two of tape in the right place would shift the paper supply and fix that problem.

Even though it is not too flimsy, the paper tray is, and it is bothersome.

Some paper distortion

I have been able to use the fax in bound and out, but I am unable to set it up and have it co-exist with my answering machine which is what I wouuld really like. According to the directions, this can be done, but you have to hang the answer machine off the printer which is not especially convenient.

Overall I would say a machine like this is doing a lot, and there are a lot of potential down sides. Compromises have to be made. All things considered I like this unit a lot and even considering the extra cost I am glad I bought it.

Canon released its new network scan driver and application for D480 few days ago. It says support network scan on D480 with Windows 7 64-bit. The scanner driver is TWAIN32 driver, so only 32 bit third party application can use this driver through TWAIN api. Anyway, Canon Network Scan Utility ScanGear works with TWAIN driver. You should be able to scan something through network with your Windows 7 64-bit OS now. It is a good news for me at least.

I bought a new computer in my home which has Windows 7 64bit OS. I download D480 Windows 7 64bit driver from Canon web site for my new computer. I can print over network on D480 with Windows 7 64bit computer, but the new 64bit driver readme file says it does not support Canon''s network scan application. I asked Canon technical support about when 64bit Windows 7 network scan application will be ready, they told me they don''t have plan for that yet. Windows 7 64 bit OS must use USB port to scan. But network scan still support on Windows 7 32bit OS.

Thus, anyone who has Windows 7 64bit version OS and considering buy this device must very careful. You may loss a big convenience during scan operation.

Epson Stylus Photo RX595 All-in-One Printer (C11C693201)

Epson Stylus Photo RX595 All-in-One Printer
  • Prints text documents at 38 pages per minute and standard 4 x 6 inch photos in 11 seconds
  • Creates 5760-by-1440 dpi prints that are smudge, scratch, fade, and water resistant
  • Auto Photo Correction with advanced face detection corrects overexposed shots
  • Print PC-free using the 2.5-inch color LCD and multipurpose card slot compatible with memory cards, USB flash drives, and digital cameras
  • 1-year limited manufacturer''s warranty

This is my third printer from this line, and the reason I had to buy it says a lot about what you should expect: the other two up and died after two years for one and nine months for the other.

A quick history: Look for my detailed reviews of the Epson Stylus R200 Photo Printer and the Epson Stylus Photo 260 Inkjet Printer to see some basics about this line. I''ve owned a couple of other Epson printers prior to buying these for DVD printing -the ONLY reason to buy one.

Like its predecessors, the RX595 gives very good results on photographs, disappointing results on documents, and exceptional results on discs. The scanner works well, but it''s nothing spectacular.

Other than the scanner and ability to handle memory cards, this unit is almost identical to the R260. Because an interface was necessary to print photos from memory cards, there is a little window and a couple of buttons not found on the simpler printers. These are welcome, especially the more sophisticated and less annoying low ink indicator (which tells right in the window which colors are about to run out).

The printer cannot handle SmartMedia, which is a disappointment, but it does have the ability to plug in a generic USB card reader which does serve as a kludgy work-around.

Like the other printers in this line, there are several distinct drawbacks to this model:

1. Ink is expensive and cartridges drain fast. There are new high-capacity cartridges available, but I have found them to last only slightly longer than the standard kind. I haven''t measured it, but my gut tells me it''s probably not worth the extra money.

2. Ink handling remains crude. For example, you cannot clean the nozzles if even one color is running low. You still cannot print at all if even one color is empty. Colored inks are drained even when you print only in black. Powering on requires a lot of ink. It''s better to leave the power on all the time and let it go into sleep mode.

3. The printer is remarkably noisy. It''s mostly hollow, and that acts like a big drum, amplifying every little movement inside.

4. Flipping the disc feeder down causes some sort of reset inside the printer which takes 10 seconds or so to clear, during which time you better not try to insert the disc tray or it will get sucked in (and not in a good way)...

5. The software has all of the same quirks of previous models, including seemingly random reset cycles which can run from one to five minutes. This is most annoying. To get the least annoying experience, turn off the print monitor software which is included (and installs automatically). You lose the ability to see ink status, but you also rid yourself of the annoying status window which jumps in front of everything and sits there until the printing is complete.

The only reason I have this is to print on discs. And it does that remarkably well. Unfortunately, the included software is a rather crude tool, and hasn''t been upgraded at all for almost three years. This is inexcusable. Still, it works just well enough if you can live with its quirks.

This printer is just OK. Even with all its drawbacks, it''s still the best solution around for printing on discs, but for everything else you can do better.

UPDATE 10/20/09

10 months later and this printer is still functioning quite well.

I''ve discovered one other major drawback which I neglected to mention above. This printer MUST be used regularly (every day is best, at least once a week is the bare minimum) or the nozzles will dry out and be hopelessly clogged. The nozzle cleaning utility will restore partial operation, but it takes quite a few printed pages to get all the nozzles working again.

If you go more than a week between printing (on any type of media), you will be disappointed and frustrated by this printer.

I recently bought a new laptop with Vista. When I bought my laptop, I took advantage of a promotion to receive a free Epson printer and bought the CX5000 which was free after the 79.99 rebate.

I gave my husband my old RX500 and used the new CX5000. Mistake. The CX5000 did not print pictures near as nice as my old RX500 and the pictures had a matte finish even when printed on glossy paper. I also noticed that the CX5000 used ink like crazy! I told my husband to bring my old printer home and gave him the CX5000. He only uses it for text copies anyway. However, I could not get my old RX500 to work with Vista and set out to find a new all in one that I would like as much as my old one. I''m very picky and expected this to be a hard task.

Before looking for a new printer, I did find out that the CX series only has 4 cartridges. The RX series has 6 cartridges. I read about this printer on Epson''s site and read reviews of a few other Epson printers on Amazon and decided to give the RX595 a shot. It was on sale at Comp USA for $99 which is a pretty reasonable price. I took my SD card and some paper and went to try it out. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the prints straight from my card. The color was great, the picture did not look like it had a flat matte finish and they printed relatively fast and very quite too! I bought it and hoped that I would be just as satisfied once I got it home and unpacked.

I have not been disappointed. I find myself looking for things to print just so I can see how nice they look. I have also used the burn feature for printing labels to CD/DVD''s a few times and am pleased with those results as well. My ink levels are still almost full and I''ve printed at least 20 4x6''s and 2 8x10''s plus printed a few text pages.

This is a really great printer! It''s quite, fast, and prints beautiful pictures. The ability to burn a label on a CD/DVD is nice too. The only slight complaint that I have is that there does not seem to be a place to store the insert used to place the CD/DVD in when burning a label. Other than that, I could not be happier with this printer. It''s the best replacement I could have picked for "Old Faithful" my RX500.

We LOVE this printer!! I have not seen an inkjet printer yet that performs like this one. We have had 2 HPs and one Lexmark over the past 5 years, and had just bought a Canon MX700 that we returned within 30 days due to poor print quality and issues with the fax. This Epson printer far exceeded our expectations and blew us away. The photo prints are beautiful and are as good as professional prints, it is truly lightning fast, comes with software that doesn''t crash or bog down your computer (pay attention, HP), is easy to install, robust, and intuitive to use. We are actually having a lot of fun with this and learning new things about it every day.

I recommend getting the Epson paper. We tried the Canon 4x6 glossy paper for photos and although it was OK, the Epson paper was noticibly better. We bought glossy and ultra-glossy 4 x 6 paper, and in the printer box they throw in some full size 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of Epson glossy. It may be that it is manufactured to optimize their particular printers, but it really does make a difference. The photos retain a really glossy, professional look to them.

There is a new kind of ink for this printer (Claria ink). It creates beautiful prints, dries immediately, and best of all, lasts a lot longer than the last generation of Epson ink (we also have a CX9400 with fax, which is also great, but it has the DuraBrite ink which does not last as long).

In addition to printing, it has great scanning software that allows you to scan to pdf, among other things. There is also a web-to-page print software feature you can install that lets you print web pages without getting the right border and bottom cut off, which frequently happens.

Tips: Turn off anti-virus software before installing it. The first few prints/photos will not have the best quality while the printer is being primed. We saw some faint banding streaks on the first photos. However after cleaning the nozzles and running through another 8 10 prints, everything looked great.

Exceptionally impressive printer for this price, and a great value. I don''t think there''s anything else out there that compares with this.

I love this printer. It allows me to scan photos. Then I can take that same photo and make it as a cd cover. By being able to print directly onto cd-printable discs, I no longer lose my precious moments of my children and family. I now exactly what''s on the disc using the provided software to create great cd covers. We make dvd covers too. It''s the best printer for the price and you can print on cds or dvds that look professional. This photo printer also prints some amazing pictures too with the hidef claria ink. Installation was a breeze. Follow the directions and you can''t go wrong.

I would definately recommend this printer to everyone who is looking for high quality photos and the added bonus of printing on cd or dvd that no other manufacturer can provide.

I recently bought this printer for better photo copying and for the direct cd/dvd printing. Best Buy has it on sale for $95. You have to buy special inkjet printable disks, a little more expensive than the regular kind but well worth it. I created dvd''s with beautiful labels, colors are strong and the label is easy to create, copying photos etc unto the printable cd/dvd label and creating text is a cinch. I really love this feature. I am diappointed with the direct copy function, (without computer), the quality is not that good. I had expected better, sharper text copying, tried it on highest quality and it got a little better. Color photo printing from the laptop is superb, the colors are really brilliant. The printer accepts all sorts of memory cards, but I haven''t tried it with my digital camera yet. It prints very fast in black and white, color photo print time is also very good. The ink is incredibly expensive, even the generic ink, so I am using my old Epson 880 ( for which you can buy a ton of generic ink really cheap)for most of my regular print jobs and use this one for cd/dvd labels and photos. I hope the generic ink will get cheaper as the model gets older :) All in all, it''s a printer with many functions, most of which is does very well. I find it a little complicated to use because of the many functions it can do and all the settings etc you have to change to do different tasks, but I think that''s probably true for any of the "All in One" printers. Ink price is way too expensive, hope Epson comes down with price. You can almost get a new printer (on sale) with all new inks for the price they charge for a set of new inks alone. If you don''t need the cd label print function (which I love) you can probably get a printer of equal quality with cheaper inks. Still, overall, this is a very good all in one printer.

I paid extra and purchased a new Brother brand toner because I wanted to be sure I had no problems. In spite of that, the Cyan cartridge leaked in the machine. I called Brother support: I was instructed to perform several procedures (most of which I had already done) to confirm the printer was okay. After weeks of back and forth, I was told that the toner and the printer were out of warranty. I was welcome to pay the authorized service shop to inspect and clean my printer, and was advise that I was stuck with the leaking toner. Very frustrating. . . . Fast forward to the end: with the assistance of Amazon''s customer support, we were able to get the toner replaced. The replacement cartridge (and three passes at cleaning my printer) solved the problem.

Lessons learned:

1. purchase your toner cartridges just before you install them don''t let them sit on the shelf long enough to risk going over the 90 day warranty

2. I can''t rely on Brother customer / technical support for urgent resolution or problem ownership. Local support is only through authorized service shops. If you aren''t willing to deal with that, then consider a service contract.

3. Amazon''s customer support is outstanding. Consider engaging them if your seller, vendor, or manufacturer fails you on a product you bought through Amazon. Be sure to document all of your interactions.

I will probably still purchase Brother toner (from Amazon), but will not assume they are perfect. I will be sure to install them within 30 days of receipt. My page volume is low enough that paying a little extra for a new cartridge is not a big deal.

Fuji Paper and Ink for IP-10 Dig Photo Id Sys
  • 4" x 6" size self-laminating color print pack for the Fujifilm IP-10 system
  • Each box contains enough ink & prints sheets for 120 prints

In my company, at times need to take many passport pictures and this Fuji IP-10 System has worked well. It is the simple, and small passport camera connected by cable to the printer. Within three minutes of notification, I can have the camera/printer set up, take the picture and print the picture for the customer. It is a good system. The printer is very fragile, so please treat it with high respect and don''t drop it. The "film" or "ink" is not available at the local store. You must purchase this F-RP120P box which contains both ink and paper. So, if you keep the camera and small printer in a box and have it ready to go, it is a great passport picture system. I also purchased the 2"x2" cutter that is availabe at Amazon to cut the pictures to the proper size. By the way, the camera as a clear plastic overlay that attached to the LCD image on the camera to help you fit the subject properly to get the correct size. A good system to have on hand.
