Why pay more for copy paper? I teach and have to end up buying a lot of my supplies. I''m not so hesitant to hand out copies if I don''t have to pay so much for the paper. This is wonderful. I love this resource. Thanks so much.

I just set this up last night to print some overheads and business cards, so there are a few things to note:

First, nothing beats a top-feeding tray for smoothness of paperflow through a printer. One of the reasons I got this was because the Brother multi-unit I have could not feed the business card stock without jamming every time.

Second, this printer allows adjustment for media thickness with a lever on the front. That really helped since I was printing both business card stock and overheads. The front location of the lever is also very convenient.

Third, a problem I found was that the color is anemic, to say the least. I had to set the quality to photo paper to get it to print with the quality needed for business cards. Using the default color left me with color that was much too faint, and the black ink looked gray. I tried cleaning the heads, but ended up with the same result. I don''t know if they have the quality set too low, or if it is just my printer. Be aware that you may have to reset the quality to much higher levels than other printers.

Overall, at this point it seems to be a very good printer for the price.

*** After more use I have found a major problem with this product it''s hard to find ink cartridges, and they are very expensive. Unless you use ink refill kits, be prepared to shell out a lot of money ***

The printer was easy to set up and get operating. It is a lot quieter and faster than the Epson model 820 that it''s replacing.

The only short coming that I have found to date is that will not accept envelope templates for odd sized envelopes that I had set up for the Epson.

Ink usage is better managed by the Canon than the Epson. Also, heads do not need to be cleaned as often.

I am waiting for Canon to provide an update to re-activate their "Easy-WebPrint" format. The new Explorer 7 will not accept it.

The simplicity and low price and small size are what attracted me to this printer. It has served well in a clinical application which requires mainly black ink. The color cartriage is wasted on this application. I do whish the printer had a larger black ink tank. 5cc gets used up in a hurry. But the cost is low for replacement cartridges.

This photo printer came included as part of a computer package I bought from Best Buy. There is no USB cable included (as stated on the box), and since I didn''t have neither the space for a printer or an extra cable laying around, I hadn''t hooked up my printer. Curiousity got the best of me, and I went out an bought some 4x6 glossy photo paper and a USB cable ($8.97) from Wal-Mart.

It took me literally 5 minutes to get the printer set up. After inserting the software, and getting it installed on my computer, I was ready to go another 5 minutes later. I took two quick pictures, and attempted printing them out. It took me a minute to figure out how to insert the paper, but one I figured it out, the pictures printed quick and brilliant. I *did* notice where there were large areas of brown it looked a tad washed out, but it was minor. The pictures were very clear and colorful.

I have yet to try to print a text document with this printer, but I don''t really have too much of a need for that. What I wanted was a photo printer to quickly print out my 4x6s, and that''s what I got! Even though this printer came with my computer, seeing what it does, I would easily shell out the $50 for it!

The only reason I docked a star was for the black/brown color quality. It wasn''t that big of a deal to me, but it might mean a lot to some people. Then again, some people might not even notice!

The black-and-white printing is OK but the photo printing is terrible. This printer simply cannot print black in photo mode. I used the Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy, one of Canon''s premium photo papers. The blacks look gray, the colors are dull. It reminds me of a newspaper photo. The review on CNET is misleading it says that the colors were a bit washed out but they were impressed nevertheless. The only thing that can impress me is how much the colors are washed out.

I own quite a bit of Canon photo equipment and I cannot believe that Canon can make such a terrible product. The printer came free with a laptop that I bought and I did not have high expectations for it, of course. But I did not expect it to be that bad for photos. I have seen photos from $80 printers that are brilliant compared to this one. Canon should have advertised this as an office printer with color capabilities. The "photo lab quality" sign on the box is a big lie.

After a few tests, I put the printer back in the box and I will give it away.

Olympus A4 Standard Gloss Photo Paper for P-400 (25-Sheets) Save 20% off

Olympus A4 Standard Gloss Photo Paper for P-400
  • Standard dye-sublimated paper
  • Compatible with the Olympus P-400 printer
  • Heavy, bright white paper
  • Dries instantly, smearproof, and water resistant
  • Includes 25 pages of 8.5 x 11-inch paper

I just recently purchased the Camedia P-400 printer a few weeks ago and have used it quite a bit. I would have to say it is the best photo printer on the market today. While it doesn''t give perfect results (and this depends a lot on your photo image that you print) it comes close. From about 2-3 feet away you can''t tell the image came from a printer. Prints beautiful 8x11 photos. I haven''t used it with a digital camera yet, but have used it for files off my computer. Timed, it takes about 10-11 minutes to print a photo (color or b&w) and does make some noise (just as a laser jet).

PROS: Great quality photos, nice design, sturdy, easy to set up and use, works with smartmedia cards/pc cards/computer image files (.jpg,.gif etc.), photos instantly dry/no smudges or smears, photo paper quality is excellent

CONS: Only came with 5 sheets of paper and a photo ribbon for 5 prints, no cables provided for hook-up (not a problem if you already own a printer cable), expensive paper and ribbon (costs $1.60 per print)

If you are looking for a great photo printer and want professional looking prints buy this printer (if you can afford it).

I also should add you get 25 glossy photos per pack ($19.99) and the photo ribbon can print 50 photos ($39.99)

I just got my P-400 printer. Using XP operating system I found that they have not got a good print driver as yet but will sometime this spring. The print is beautiful. I still have much to learn about lightening the print. It seems to print on the dark side. Big drawback is the 7.64 x10 print rather than 8x10. It just barely covers under a frame and much harder to trim. I would like to know where the viewer from Olympia, WA gets their paper for 19.95 and ribbon for 39.95. Please write and let me know. Does anyone have a good price on these items? I want to keep costs down as I do a lot of printing. I am having trouble getting the USB port to print. It must be something I just don''t know. I would not be worried about showing these prints to any customer. creativeimages2@earthlink.net.

You really don''t have much of a choice of what to use. If you need this, then you need it.

Just remember that ALL your information of everything that gives you a paper copy is on the used cartridge. So, if it''s important or sensitive material, you don''t want it to become public information. You''ll be lucky if you have a fire place so it can be destroyed.

As for me, I''m an apartment dweller so I shred the whole damn thing.

It doesn''t matter if it costs a little or a lot: a product has to be easy to insert and

make it work. This is a combo of two ribbon rolls, and you have to unroll and reroll on

the Panasonic cassette. I couldn''t do it right, and there would not be too many people

who would be able to do it right. I wasted my money, I will never order again from

this company.

On March 1st I ordered and my on March 15th credit card was charged for two fax film cartridges they were promised by March 22 at the latest. These items were not received. I have made several attempts to contact the seller: the first he responded that he''d resend the items immediately; the second, third and fourth he ignored completely. I would caution any future buyer to avoid this seller completely. Litigation for satisfaction of this theft/purchase would be costlier than the value of the charge although I''m concerned for the security of my credit card.

The cartridge worked well but the Panasonic fax machine was troublesome since it was new and I finally junked it. Constant problems with input paper feed and paper feed for the paper to print on. I would not buy another Panasonic fax. Bought an HP fax which is good so far.

  • Operate your printer within seconds after power-on with Quick Start
  • Enhanced "Auto Photo Fix" easily removes red-eye
  • Self-operating paper output tray automatically opens when printing or copying

The Cannon MP620 all in one is a great product. It was easy to set up. It has wireless capabilities, but you will need other equipement to do so depending on your home system. ie. blue tooth or router etc. It prints quietly and the quality of print is great. It does print slower than other printers, but that isn''t a concern for my needs. I love the on board screen that you can easily navigate to print, fax, copy, scan, send to documents etc. It looks good especially for a home office. The paper is loaded in the bottom tray, so it isn''t exposed giving in a clean-lines appearance. It also has a small footprint which is amazing thinking of all it does. You can close the output tray when not in use. If you forget to open it for printing, it opens itself. It has 5 inkwells, so the ink is more cost effective. I will say since it is a newer product, so you may not find the ink just anywhere yet. It is also confusing which ink goes with it. It takes Cannon CLI 221 magenta, black, yellow, cyan and a larger PGI 220 black ink cartriges. The 221 are about $12 each and the 220 is about $15. You can get multi packs to save some too. All in all I am very happy with the product.

This printer is meant to be a general-purpose printer for us. While I do not have the experience to compare this with other recently made photo printers, I will say that the photo I did print with it looked much better then any other home printed photo I have done with the "photo printers'' we have had. The reason for this review is to praise it for connecting to my home network with ease. Wireless setup was truly amazingly easy with this printer!

When the wife wanted to take our printing wireless we had shopped the local electronics stores. Unfortunately, the MP620 or any other wireless printers from Canon were not available at any of them so we decided on an HP product. Forty-five minutes on the phone with tech support, an exchange of that printer for another, and 1 1/2 more hours on the phone with tech support and it was still not working wirelessly! In came this MP620 from Amazon and 10 minutes later it was working perfectly on our home network!!

Earlier this year I bought the HP C8180 Photosmart All In One, which prints some great pictures, but is so slow on spooling the first page of a print and makes so much noise it was driving me crazy. It took nearly 30 seconds to start printing, using the wireless connection. Before you say I''m being picky, imagine being in a rush to get out the door and needing to print off an important document. You hit the print button and the printer just sits there silent, starring back at you with that vacant look in its eyes. At this point for me I start pulling out the few hairs left on my head and then suddenly it starts making all of the annoying little sounds it makes and checking the picture tray for paper adding so much more wasted time until it finally hits the main paper tray and starts shooting out papers. Finally I gave up on it and bought this printer last week because Canons previous model (Canon Pixma MP610) had such great reviews and the few this one (Canon MP620) had were very positive. After setup, which I''ll touch on later, I printed some test documents using the wireless connection and the Canon printer spooled in less than 2 seconds after hitting the print button and thank Canon it makes very little noise through the whole process. The documents print great and the pictures are remarkable. I seriously love this printer, maybe some of it had to do with my loathe for my previous printer, but I would recommend this product to anyone in the market for a new printer. Anyone looking for a used printer give me a hollar at... lol j/k.I gave the HP to my parents they don''t really care about the speed and noise issues.

So for the setup.

I work with electronics a lot and knew I wouldn''t have a problem setting up this printer even after reading the reviews that said it was "too complex to setup" or skip the directions that come with it. So I followed the directions exactly and with the help of my three year old daughter I got this thing setup and printing with in a half hour or so. I swear I didn''t stray from the directions at all. It really isn''t difficult to setup so if that worries you just make sure you read through the instructions once or twice before you start messing with things.

The MP620 Cannon wireless printer works great and was pretty easy to set up wireless. Pictures look much better than my prior Cannon 2000. Watch out for Amazon''s "Frequently Bought Together" items with this printer. The ink cartriges sugested are WRONG! I had to send some back. The correct ones are the CLI-221 set of four color tanks and the separate PGI-220BK black tank.

Just received this printer. Had an HP all in one before which was ok except that the software was not ok. i set up this printer and was printing in just a few minutes. so far it is working very well. Beautiful color photos. Does make a bit of noise now and again when starting or warming up but they say that its normal. One thing is that it is quite large. I like the idea that it has a separate closed print tray for regular paper in front and a photo paper tray at back top. so everything can be kept closed for dust not to enter. The door you collect your printed paper from automatically opens if you forget to open it...

Avery Linen-Textured Two-Side Clean Edge Business Cards Save 35% off

Avery Linen-Textured Two-Side Clean Edge Business Cards for Inkjet Printers, White, Pack of 200
  • Clean, smooth edges for a professional presentation
  • Two-sided printing provides greater surface area to give your clients key information
  • Extra-sturdy, matte-coated cards feel substantial in your hand
  • Convenient do-it-yourself cards mean that you can make changes to your design as often as you like
  • Design and print from your desktop in minutes

I wanted to make business cards at home, that looked and felt good, and that would allow a great color photo picture to be used on the card with my information. I selected the Avery Linen-Textured Two-Side Clean Edge Business Cards for Inkjet Printers, Matte, White, Pack of 200 (08873) and after working with templates and WORD to design my card, I''ve been really happy with the results.

My cards are full color, one sided (even though you can print on both sides of these). The "linen" texture is only on one side, but if you print a nice color picture on the texture side with your business/contact information (my card has a color picture that fills the whole card space) then leaving the back white actually makes the card look even sharper, in my opinion.

I tried to print my high quality photo (with information) on these cards using a laser printer, an HP Color LaserJet 1600 Printer, and I was not happy with the photo quality on these cards (or on any stock for that matter). So, I am using a color photo inkjet now, and I''m really happy with the results. My inkjet is not too fancy, a Canon PIXMA iP6220D Photo Printer, but the results look really nice. I use the highest quality photo print setting, and I tell it that this paper is "matte photo paper" and it all works!

The laser perforated edges on all four sides of the cards snap away cleanly. You don''t rip or cut or tear these cards apart, you print them, and snap them apart. This worked much better than I would have imagined. You can not see the that these were snapped apart the final product looks great.

Why not 5 stars then? I wish these were just a tad heavier. They are not cheap or flimsy as some reviewers suggest, but they are not as stiff (thick) as some cards. Maybe if they were thicker, they might not print as well in the low-end photo printers.

Buy Avery Linen-Textured Two-Side Clean Edge Business Cards Now

I''ve used these cards for a while now and like them a lot.

The print quality is good, although I think a lot of this has to do with the quality of printer you use. I am using a Canon Pixma MP620 and I am printing only black & white one sided. The linen texture is not pronounced enough to interfere with printing, at least of simple graphics. The thickness of the card is perhaps a little thinner than professional cards but not a lot. They are stiff and rigid like a professional business card would be.

For me the best part is that I can create my own card layout--and I can change it as much as I like. Unlike professional services that require a purchase of 500 or so, I can print 10 at a time--or even one! I can print a sheet of all the same design, or a different design on every card on the sheet.

I highly recommend buyers download the free Avery Design Pro software--Microsoft attempts to copy Avery''s templates but they always are a little off and you will experience ''creep'' in the alignment of the card and printing if you try to use MS Word instead of Avery''s software. The Avery software is free and available in both mac and PC formats. Much like MS Powerpoint, the Avery software has ''preset'' templates with text boxes and graphics that require little manipulation--or you can delete it all and design your own from scratch! Be aware that when purchasing two-sided products like this, the preset templates will also be two-sided so be sure to choose the ''back of sheet'' feature to preview, modify, or delete any backside graphics before printing (or you''ll end up with an entire sheet of INSERT NAME HERE cards).

Avery is living on its reputation, and like other companies that try this, their reputation is going down fast...

Cards can only be printed one side (no indication of this on box or in literature); also, they had problems w/ink spotting (not printer related).

Want Avery Linen-Textured Two-Side Clean Edge Business Cards Discount?

Very impressed with the quality. Those given cards commented on how much they looked like professionally produced business cards.

The reviews indicating ink bleeding and texture on only one side are likely for an old version of the product. My ink jet (Canon Pixma MP970) produced very clear and fine fonts in color. The cards are textured on both sides and can be printed on both sides.

This is a great product. Many of the previous reviews refer to the older product. The current 8873 works great, is textured on both sides and with a good printer, prints on both sides. For the best results DO NOT use MSWord. As usual, Word has bugs (which are the cause of most of the formating problems other reviewers mentioned), and some of them show up when using the Avery templates (mail merge is one of them). Instead, download Avery''s free software, DesignPro (unfortunately this does NOT work with Vista 64 bit, but does with other Vista versions), from Avery...

Was looking for a scanning, copying, color laserjet which was not so large it would take over my entire desk. This one fit the bill as did not care to fax as rarely do that for personal reasons.

The pros

easy to set up if have basic computer skills, good quality printing and wireless printing, small footprint as less than 14 inches with arm down..

The cons-

Limited instructions on how to set up as only a one page graphic piece which was not useful.

Scanner is not your normal scanner as it is an arm that supposedly allows for 3d scanning which is little more than a picture. Regular scanning is done same way as the raised arm just take a picture against the white background so product is not as good as even a cheap scanner.

So if looking for a multi purpose good printer and do not care to get expert quality scans/copies this one works. If have space go for one of the machines with a proper scanner or get a scanner and printer separately.

Buy Hewlett Packard CLJM275NW Wireless Color Printer Now

We bought this printer for our organization and we have a fairly old computer. Whenever I send a color pdf document it takes 3-4 minutes for the printer to start printing. It prints only 1 page every 1.5-2 minutes which is ridiculous; it waits for about a minute after printing each page. I print 30 pages in literally 45-50 minutes. Black and white printing is fast, no problem with that. Quality is awesome too, both color and b&w is really good. But I would suggest you to avoid this printer if you plan to print in color in relatively short amount of times, this printer will fail you terribly in that.

The 3D object scanner is bogus. A "genuine" hp ink set costs over $200. Cheaper aftermarket inks don''t work. There are better printers out there. Don''t bother with this one.

This was one of the easiest printers to setup. Adding it to our wireless router and our wireless laptop. Once installed, we could also print from an ipad. For the price and all the options, this is the color Laser, scanner, copier, wireless, network printer I would recommend.

All these people that complained about the printer have failed to tell us what computer they are printing from. THAT is going to be a very important piece of information to validate your complaint. It does NOT mean, because you are printing from a junked up computer that the printer is slow. How about checking your computer and cleaning up your computer??? Could that just possibly be the problem??

Just a thought. This is what I see when customers bring in computers. Almost always junked up and that is why they bring them in for repair. They wonder why things are slow. Oh ... also maybe you have 2 or 3 virus protection software running ALSO?

Please do not complain about a product that depends on another product to operate!!!

Thank you very much.

Epson NX300 All-In-One Printer Print/Copy/Scan/Fax (Black)

Epson NX300 All-In-One Printer Print/Copy/Scan/Fax
  • One-touch copying and high-quality scanning
  • Black text printing up to 31 ppm
  • Fax in color or black-and-white
  • Built-in, 30-page automatic document feeder
  • Individual ink cartridges

I''ve had this a couple months. It prints fine but I am not thrilled about the ink system. There''s a black and then 3 individual colors and if even one color is out, you can''t print anything. When black was out, it wouldn''t even let me print text in color. DO NOT try to buy compatible ink replacements because they won''t work. That is a pain. I talked to Cartridge World about refills and they said once the low ink signal comes up, it''s too late to refill because it triggers an electronic thing that they can''t fix and the printer won''t recognize it. So Epson really has you pinned on the buying their name brand ink. Best deal is at Best Buy black single is $15.59 and colors are $11.49 each. That beats online prices. But I sure go through it...I print a lot of letters with photos and stuff like that.

I purchased this all in one when my Brother MFC died. One thing that this printer has in common with the Brother is the fact that the ink system has seperate colors and the printer head isn''t built into the cartridge. I don''t really like that so much, but the printer does everything I want it to do, and Epson has historically produced good printers. I like the following this about this printer: 100 Page Fax Memory, Button to switch between copy/fax, Flatbed and Sheet Feeder, It looks good (doesn''t look cheap). What I don''t like about this printer: The ink/printer head system, No Backlight on LCD, No Ethernet option. you get what you pay for, and for the money, I think this printer is a good deal.

I got this all-in-one in a package deal with a camera. I have been using Canon printers for the last eight years or so. Compared to the Canon the Epson is really slow and the inks cost about 25% more and run out faster. The scanner works fine.

Want Epson NX300 All-In-One Printer Print/Copy/Scan/Fax (Black) Discount?

Yes, it is a cheap printer and I bought it just for the scanning feature. Cheap Flatbed Scanners are around $80. So the Epson NX300 for $47 at Sam''s Club is the cheapest scanner I could find. And so far it scans just fine for my purposes... Mostly backup documents at 300dpi resolution.

However, I feel their advertisment about the print speed is misleading... (I know, they do have a fine print saying that the speed is estimated for draft mode... but who really reads the fine print, especially when you are at the store looking at the box and would need reading glasses to read it). Under regular printing (not even high quality), take the advertised speed and divide it by about 20 and you will be there. So the estimated 30ppm for b/w comes out to be about 1.5ppm. This makes it by far the slowest printer I have ever owned. If I would have bought it as a primary home or office printer, it would go back to the store tomorrow.

Now to the cost of ink... at the moment it doesn''t matter which printer you buy. Printer ink from ALL printer manufacturers is expensive and that is an understatement. If you calculate the cost of ink per cartridge and convert these tiny amounts into gallons your price will be around $5,000 /gallon printerink. No, this is not a typo. I meant fivethousand!!!! Doesn''t matter if it''s an HP, Epson, Canon, etc. (Well, maybe Kodak printers... They have the cheapest inkprice per cartridge: You get a doublepack of black for about $10 at Sams for the Kodak, but I have not researched enough how much they hold or if they just put a very small amount in their cartridges to warrant the price) Refilling is no longer easy for new printers and their cartridges, since all these Epson, HP, Canon stuff is now microchipped. So you can''t refill, the printer knows and refuses to print unless you know how or invest into software that is able to reset / reprogram that dreaded ink cartridge chip. These new cartridges also have an expiration date. So you can not stockpile cheap ink. When the expiration date arrives, the cartridge will be unusable (= reads empty) even though it is brand new out of the box. Some printers, like my HP Officejet Pro L7590, croak if you put aftermarket cartridges in it!!! (I am now on the third replacement from HP for the L7590.. So far free hence under warrenty!) I suggest to hold on to your old inkjets. They usually print fine, so does my 7 year old HP deskjet 990cse and it has the old fashioned, non-microchiped, easily refillable cartridges that are still available. And it prints faster then the brandnew Epson NX300!

I had an Epson previously and loved it. Then I got a Lexmark. Very expensive cartridges. I saw this for a steal price at Sam''s Club (sorry Amazon) so got it. It''s very easy to set up (it didn''t come with a USB cable so I used the Lexmark''s). The instructions and software are very good.

I had a very large document to print. Fifteen pages in it crushed 2 pages. I couldn''t find in the Epson software how to print these 2 pages. I called tech support. The tech had no clue once he actually understood what I wanted to do. I got his supervisor. She was smart, understood, knew, explained you now go through your word processing program. Great.

Printed out the entire 250 pages with no further issues. It''s not dark dark and I would prefer to see the black more saturated but I don''t see where to tweak that function. I also don''t know how to turn the printer off. Pressing the on button doesn''t do it. Whatever it is it''s counterintuitive.

I ordered some generic cartridges for $7 each, buy 2 get 1 free, free shipping. Always used generics with the last Epson and never had a problem. Get the best deal possible on ink and you''ll be a happy person.

So I think of this as a disposable--it''s a delivery system for ink. If it lasts a year it owes me nothing at the price I paid. This is something for home use, not high volume for office use but it''s a decent printer with all the scan/copy/fax functions you could want.

My workhorse HP LaserJet 2200d finally gave up the ghost last year after many long years of completely trouble-free service. I spent a lot of time searching for a replacement, reading reviews and specs and comparing numerous models. I even considered purchasing a color laser printer. In the end, I purchased this printer (directly from Dell), and I am very happy with it.

WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR

Here is what I was looking for, in order of importance from highest to lowest:

* automatic duplexing

* network capability

* reliability

* low to average per-page costs from consumables (primarily toner)

* high resolution

* quiet operation

* multiple paper sizes and weights

I wasn''t as concerned about printing speed or duty cycles, though I considered those as well; this printer is for home use, so most printers'' duty cycles are more than adequate for our needs. I wanted to spend under $200 but was mentally prepared to have to spend up to $400 for a printer that would meet my needs without breaking the bank. I was also hoping to perhaps get a good color laser printer instead of continuing with a monochrome printer.

MY SEARCH

For every printer I looked at, I read every review I could find, ranging from personal reviews to reviews on computer magazine/consumer electronic sites. For each printer, reviewers mentioned some kind of drawback that made me hesitate; for example, high toner costs. Sometimes replacement toner will cost almost as much as (or sometimes even more than) the printer--what''s up with that? At that point, why not just buy a new printer every time your toner runs out?

In addition, the reviews of the low-end color laser printers were pretty much universally bad. The reviewers might start out saying, "This is a great printer," but then they would continue with, "Well, the cost per page is pretty high, and the print quality isn''t very good unless you spend a lot of time fussing with settings, but we still recommend it." I guess they left off "If you don''t mind wasting your money."

I was getting a bit discouraged, thinking that perhaps I just wouldn''t be able to get what I wanted for my budget. And I finally gave up on the idea of getting a color laser printer when I read a very recent review (July 2012) that said the per-page cost for ink for inkjet printers has now gone below the per-page cost for toner, and the quality of the inkjets (in the ~$400 range) is better than price-equivalent color laser printers (though laser printers still have the edge in printing text). Okay, I thought, I have an HP PhotoSmart 8400 that I purchased specifically for printing photos. (And it does a wonderful job doing so.) We''ve been limping along using it in fast draft econo mode for our everyday printing needs; we can get a monochrome laser printer and then continue to use the PhotoSmart for our color needs.

THE DECIDING FACTORS

Then I came across this printer. I had read some good reviews of other Dell printers, though the prices of those printers were too high. But this printer was within my budget and, remarkably, the reviews were, in the majority, quite positive. One magazine couldn''t find anything wrong with it. They reported that the print quality is excellent (resolution is 1200x1200); the print speed (40 pages per minute) is high; the per-page toner cost is low, especially if you purchase Dell''s use-and-return toner cartridges; and you can get a cartridge rated at 6,000 pages, which is pretty good these days for the lower-end printers. "Sold," says I.

Since I have always had excellent customer service with Dell over many years of dealing with them, and because the prices there were similar to here (they were having a sale when I purchased the printer), I bought directly from Dell.

MY EXPERIENCES WITH THIS PRINTER

Because this printer just arrived yesterday, I know I will need to come back in a few months and update this review with my longer-term experiences. Here are my experiences setting it up and using it.

* Setup was simple and easy. I followed the visual instructions to remove all packing materials, plugged the printer into my modem/router, turned it on, and popped the installation disk into my computer''s optical (CD) drive. The installation software started up automatically. Our home network setup is pretty basic: we are all plugged into or wirelessly connected to a modem/router.

During the installation process,

1. I said I agreed to terms, then chose Next.

2. I now had three choices--two for how to install the printer and one to install documentation. I chose Network Installation (instead of Personal Installation, which would have been my choice if the printer were connected directly to my PC). Then I chose Next.

3. On the next screen, I chose "I am setting up a print server to share printers with others on the network." (The other option was, "I want to use a network printer on this computer," which I later realized was what I should have chosen) Next.

4. On the next screen, the printer was detected and displayed. Note that even though it is highlighted, you still have to click inside the little check box to the left of the printer to select it. Next.

5. The next screen lists what looks like three different printers, but those are instead different drivers for the same printer. The first driver is selected as the default, but to set a different driver as the default printer, you just click on the driver, then click "Set this printer as default." I left the default as it was, and also made sure that "Share this printer with other computers" was selected. I left the "share" name (the printer name--Dell2350) as the default. Next.

6. On the next screen, I could have entered a description (though I didn''t). Other options on that screen (documentation, toner management, location of drivers, etc.) are disabled. I discovered later that I can only edit them if I choose "I want to use a network printer on this computer" in step 3.

7. This was it! I chose Install. The installation was pretty fast--maybe a few minutes. At the end of the installation, the printer spit out a network/printer information page--boring information, but gorgeous.

I could probably have then had others in the house access the printer over the network and through my computer, but after having gone through the installation process once, I realized that I could have (and probably should have) selected "I want to use a network printer on this computer" in step 3, and that is what everyone else did. With that choice, everything was pretty much the same, except they had more choices enabled in step 6, and the page that got spit out at the end was a standard Windows printer test page (instead of the network/printer data page). As with my installation, the installation software quickly and easily found the printer on the network for everyone else. In one case, the installation was done using a wireless connection. It was kind of fun to have my daughter print out her test page from downstairs in the kitchen, where she was working on her laptop using a wireless connection.

* Noise. This was one of my criteria, and the reviews had said it is quiet. When it is on but not actively printing, every so often it makes a quiet little noise to itself for a second or so, but otherwise it is completely silent. I have to take a look at the little panel in front to see if it is on. However, when printing, it is noisier than my old LaserJet was. It isn''t unbearably noisy, but it isn''t quiet, either. It isn''t noisy enough to ding a star for.

* Printing quality. For text and photos: WOW. There are three printing options: Draft, Normal, and Best. The printing quality on Normal mode is better by far than on my admittedly ancient HP LaserJet. I expected that. But it is also much better than the large commercial monochrome printer/copier we have at work. As a typography geek, I am impressed and beyond pleased. Printing quality in Best is even better. I tried printing in Draft mode and I can''t see a difference between it and normal, so I need to do more testing. Also, I did not do extensive testing of the other two drivers (the three drivers are named 2350dn Laser Printer XL, 2350dn Laser Printer PS3, and Dell 2350dn Laser Printer; I was using the XL). Output between the XL and the regular one seem the same; I will read the documentation to discover the differences.

In my test print, I have a color photo (with some large dark areas), a large area of background color, and text in two different Open Type fonts and in several sizes (from 10 points to 72 points; some of the text is in color, while most is black). The type (both black and color) and photo are crisp, sharp, and clear. The only thing I don''t like is that the background area is not a uniform mass of gray, but instead has some gradations in some areas. Perhaps I can make printer adjustments to fix that, but it isn''t a big deal to me. The color text (which if course is also gray) is perfectly uniform and shows no such gradations.

* Duplexing. The printer is NOT set to duplex by default. You can change your printer driver to duplex, which I did for my printing tests. However, it is also quite easy to use the two-line LCD display to change the default to duplexing. In fact, once I dived into the menu settings (after consulting with the surprisingly excellent documentation that is supplied in the form of a Windows Help file), I was surprised and delighted to find out how many paper sizes and options this printer offers.

* Other notes: The printer driver control panels (the one you access within your operating system) are fully loaded and easy to use. The printer dimensions (roughly 17" wide by 15" deep by 10" high--a small plastic back protector thing adds another 2" to the depth) are perfect for placing it on a large open shelving unit where all my auxiliary computer equipment resides. As for the color of the printer itself, I''d have preferred white, but black was the only choice. It is kind of picky of me, but the black shows finger marks from when my wonderful partner heaved it onto the shelf. (He says it isn''t all that heavy.) The 250-sheet paper tray holds plenty of paper for our uses; I didn''t purchase the optional 550-sheet tray. I could add 256MB more memory, but will wait to see if the included 32MB is enough. Returning the lower-cost use-and-return toner cartridges is free. The duty cycle is 60,000 pages per month. This is an Energy Star printer.

I replaced my previous 2350 when the envelope printer stopped printing clear envelopes as it was more expensive to fix than the cost of a new printer. As it turns out, the new one is no better. The regular 8.5 x 11 sheet printing works great. Unfortunately I can''t return the printer because we already scratched the printer.

This printer is noisy. People keep asking me what is wrong with it when they hear it print. It has been installed for two weeks and works well so far. I use it as my personal office printer, it replaced an HP 4100 which was a decade old but much quieter. It is much louder than numerous HP and Brother printers in our office.
