I bought the larger cartridges because I had read that they last so much longer. However, after having used a couple of the more expensive cartridges (which cost 50% more than the PG-40) I am convinced they do not last 50% longer than the regular cartridges. In fact I saw very little difference. After examining the boxes, I realize that the larger cartridge only holds 22ml versus 16ml for the regular (37.5% more). It doesn''t even seem to last a third longer to me.

So I will purchase the regular cartridges from now on. Same print quality, but a better value.

There is a flaw in the math and logic of a previous reviewer who stated that this cartridge only has 37.5% more ink then the PG-40. The reviewer obviously is missing a very important and significant part of the equation. (i.e. the saturation point of the sponge).

In other words, if the sponge of the cartridge retains 4 ml of the ink. Then the PG-40 cartidge only has 12 ml of effective ink (since 4 ml is retained by the sponge). Therefore a cartidge with 22 ml of ink = 22 ml 4 ml saturation point of sponge = 18 ml of effective ink. Which would be 50% more ink then the PG-40 cartridge.

You have to consider everything that effects the output of a product when performing a scientific or mathematical equation. Neglecting the unobvious parts of the equation and only focusing on what is obvious and is in "front of your face" results in serious miscalculations and errors in reasoning.

Furthermore, by considering how much ink is retained by the sponge, it also shows that you gain more then you realize when you refill ink jet cartridges. Since the sponge is already pre-saturated with ink at the time you refill it, then any ink you add will be used as part of the output when printing pages. So by refilling this cartridge with 22 ml of ink when it runs out of ink, then you effectively have a 26 ml cartridge. And this applies for every refill, since after the first time the cartridge is filled up, the sponge is pre-saturated and any ink added will be directly used by the printer. Something I think a lot of people who refill their inkjet cartridges do not realize.

I believe the most important thing to look at when purchasing an inkjet printer is which printer is the best for refilling. You can buy a very large bottle of bulk ink for around $20. You can get over 2000 printed pages out of a single inkjet cartridge on this printer. This is by far one of the easiest and best inkjet cartridges for refilling. Granted the Canon has a few annoyances when you refill cartridges, but those are easy to get around, and if anyone has any refill questions I''ll answer them in the comment section.

I bought this high capacity cartridge because I read that it works with the Canon ip1700 printer. Apparently this is not true for US printers, but it is true for European printers. Unfortunately, canon support had no help for me, so I opted to manually put the ink from my new PG-50 into my empty PG-40. It was much easier than I expected, as I just had to remove the tops from both cartridges, and swap out the ink soaked sponge. A little super glue and scotch tape to hold the top in place so the ink didn''t evaporate, and it worked great!

After looking at the amount of black ink that the sponge had for both cartridges, it is apparent that the high capacity gives more ink per dollar, but it does take some effort to get it to work.

This printer warms up more slowly than my old Laserjet 5000 but, having warmed up, prints more than twice as fast--and much, much faster when duplexing. The duplexing technology is far superior to the old added-tray system, which jammed too often (after several thousand copies, I''ve had no jams in the P3005d duplexer). The image quality is excellent (better for graphics than my $9,000. Toshiba), and it has various fuser settings for different kinds of media. Printing labels and index are no problem. About the only criticisms I have are: the tendency of the copies to curl, regardless of the paper used (but this is a problem common to all laser printers I have used); the menu display is a bit cumbersome and hard to read in some lighting conditions--I wish they would use dedicated buttons and a larger display window for setting such functions as print density. The menu settings for printing custom-size sheets in the proper orientation are tricky and confusing.

This is an awesome printer! Have had it for years and it has been flawless in its performance. I had HP printers prior to this that also worked perfectly for years, some for more than a decade. This is big, and heavy. I like that because it means it has some meat to it, unlike the majority of printers today that are so light they just seem to have nothing inside. The only reason I''m writing a review now is because I just bought a new computer which didn''t have the old printer output connection that I was using on the old computer. I thought I was going to have to get a new printer, but when I was searching Amazon for one I saw that they were still selling this printer, and noticed in the specs that it had a USB connector. I used that and it works as well as always, without that huge printer cable that I had been using. Reliable and indestructible. I also get about 10 times the number of pages from a printer cartridge than what the cartridge says I will get, although I only use the HP cartridges so I don''t know about other brands. After several attempts at purchasing less expensive home printers that were absurdly slow, loud and/or shaky, ineffective, or just didn''t work at all, I finally gave in and bought this printer, which is the same HP model used at my office. I have to print 60+ page documents on a regular basis and the P3005D does so very quickly and reliably. It prints quietly, holds a large supply of blank paper, and is compact enough not to require a desk of its own. While I didn''t want to spend this much for a home printer, I''ve found this one to be well worth the cost. After extensive searching around the internet it seems like there are problems with the formatter boards on these printers. I called HP to see if anything is being done and we were told if we want a new board it will cost $199 for the board plus installation.

I have been using this printer for about 3 weeks and it has worked wonderfully. The color profiles I''ve gotten from Epson and Ilford are close enough that I will not bother with custom profiling until I find a lot of spare time.

Ink usage is pretty moderate. The instructions warn that the first time the printer is "Charged" there will be less ink available for use, but that it will be better when the next cartridge is inserted. I printed about 250 color 8x10 photos on 8.5x11 cut sheets plus a few 16x20 on roll before my black ink ran out.

I really like this printer with 3 exceptions.

1. It''s extremely large and heavy. It came on a pallet, large.

2. Photo black and Matte black use the same slot so you''ll have to swap and waste a ton of ink to switch back and forth. I do little matte (for now) so it''s no big deal for me, but I think I will prob NEVER do anymore Matte until I get a big job that can cover my ink loss!

3. The bottom print margin on cut sheet is .55 inches!

So it cannot do borderless prints on cut sheet and most of the templates I used had to be modified to work around this huge bottom print margin!

This caused a huge headache for me. However, once I rebuild my own scripts and templates, I believe I can work around this.

Overall I really like the printer and one of the reasons I chose this printer over the 3800 is one that few people know about. The 4880 has this suction thing that will prevent the paper from curling up and hitting the print head. I had issues with this from time to time on my Canon i9900.

So far the printer has been relatively fast for me and I am so confident in the prints that I just let it print and print. If there is an issue, with my print, it''s usually been a poor setup on my part (forgot to set proper profile, forgot about unusually LARGE print margin).

I won''t give it 5 stars because I still want more for the price I paid for this printer. The .55in bottom print margin and swapping ink cartridges should be addressed before I can say that I would freely recommend this printer to anybody.

However my prints look great and come out pretty quick!

I chose the Epson 4880 for several reasons: past experience with Epson products, my estimate of the printing cost and the quality of the samples I''ve seen. I have not been disappointed.

Let''s start with the pros:

Epson quality. After nearly a thousand 8 x 10" (and equivalent) prints over the past three months, this printer looks and acts as good as new. No breakdowns, no degradation of print quality, nada.

Economy. I keep a close watch on consumables. I''d estimate that my per-print cost is around USD 0.75 0.85 per 8 x 10" page, excluding paper. This is considerably less than cheaper inkjet printers and with few notable exceptions, is unrivaled by same-class inkjets or most labs for that matter. My notable exception is the "minilab" class of device, which for an up-front investment of tens of thousands of dollars, can product 4 x 6" prints for under a dime.

Quality. This printer produces professional quality prints. I''ve had many compliments and never a complaint about the print quality.

Now, the cons.

Matte vs. Photo Black. If you want to switch between them, you''ll burn about USD 40-50 worth of ink each time you do this. As such, I started with the more versatile Photo Black cartridge and intend to stay with it through the life of this printer.

Bulk. At 90 pounds, it''s difficult to take to events. A custom Pelican case for this printer will run several hundred dollars.

All told, I''m very satisfied with my choice. Next time I''m in the market for a printer, I expect to purchase a descendant of this printer, perhaps one or two generations down the line.

I really like the way this printer prints. The color and clarity are almost flawless. It is a very expensive printer to keep up. each ink cartridge is in the range of $55 to $60 and it takes 8. that is not that big a deal until you have to print almost three times a week to keep the print heads clean. you can''t let this printer sit for more than a few days or it clogs the heads. I use more ink doing test prints than actual prints. If you have a business where you print constantly then this is a great printer, but if you only do occasional printing then I would look for something different.

I''ve had this Printer for about three weeks now and I love it! However, It is a beast! Make sure you have a heavy solid stand to put it on. It does weigh 150 lbs! I have mine on a solid Oak coffee table. I am a Photographer, and So far I have framed a few 13" X "19 prints and they look stunning! I''m excited to make some larger ones. Very professional looking prints! I''m very happy with it!

This purchase was for the replacement of an Epson 4000 printer that was no longer supported using Mac OS 10.6. There were some minor difficulties setting up the network printing options, but support had seen the issue before and had me reset the network card via the control panel on the printer... everything is fine.

The output is better than the 4000 and the print speed seems a little faster. Ink usage I''m still testing, but it seems to be a little better.

was interested in 7675 model that has 4 star rating over several reviews. Its scanner is 600x1200 dpi so I decided to review the 9575 with better scan capabilities and looks much more elegant that 7675. I read the two reviews on Amazon, both had 2 star ratings. Both are very well written, to the point, so I was afraid to pick this model up. However, I decided to give it a try anyway.

I have tried to address some of the points raised in the other two 2 Star reviews, hope it will help them also, or, they may be correct in their individual circumstances.

The setup was a breeze the CD accompanying the printer asks for 30 minutes set up time, I got done somewhat short of 30 mins, most of the time going into doing external stuff ("now get paper, load it in tray" etc). Once the setup was complete, all its features worked just fine. No customer support, no rollback of software of conflicts of any kind.

Here are some notes that may help the buyers or those considering to buy-

* On opening the box, in big letters, there is a sign insert CD before you connect the printer. Follow the simple instructions by the book. You may find the setup as easy as I did.

* I connected the machine wireless hooking up my 2 desktops and 1 laptop. All work fine.

* The earlier 2 star reviews found the printer flimsy. I found it as well constructed as any other printer give or take a shade here and there. The perception of "Flimsy" could arise from the scanner cover, once lifted, well, it appears "Flimsy" as the hinges swivel and appear loose.

In checking with one of the brick and mortar stores, their response was that it is designed that way so that a BOOK can be photocopied. Rigid hinges make it difficult to position a book.

* Print quality is good, ink capacity is same as 7675 model (approx 500 pages), I am ok with all this. PCMag has some reviews on both and I agree with their assessment -both have similar 3star or 4star rating.

* As far as software conflicts reported earlier go, my machines are loadedfrom productivity suites to graphics to even games. No software issues arose. This is my experience, and is not meant to refute what the other two reported.

Overall, a very satisfying machine for such a low price. I am happy with it.

The overall construction and setup are good including the wireless. The system is a bit louder than my HP K60 that this was suppose to replace. The photo quality is good but less than the quality of the canon PIXMA series. However, I didn''t attempt to fine-tune the photo optons. The biggest problem is the software will not allow you to share or use peer-to-peer networking for this system. (confirmed by tech. support) Once I connected the other two computers on my network all the advanced options were grayed-out. ie auto-duplexing and all the photo options. Therefore I sent it back.

I bought the Lexmark x9575 after returning the Epson Workforce 600. I loved the Epson but their idea of 2-sided printing is flipping the paper and putting it back in paper tray. I own my own business and need the speed and conveneince of automatic duplex printing.

The Lexmark is difficult to set up. I''m an IT guy and configured my own network, even then I had to call and spend 30 minutes with an out-sourced support department. They couldn''t figure it out. I finally realized that the WiFi on the printer will only work with WEP Key 1. My network was set to use Key 3. After making the changes on my firewall/access point it connected and began working.

If you don''t use the software to set up the printer on your PC most of the advanced options (like Print Duplex) will be greyed out. Knowing what I know, and working with PCs and Printers for a living, I configured it myself and was frustrated to see the Duplex option was greyed out. Another call to tech support. He changed my TCP/IP port to a Lexmark 9500 Series por and it all started working.

The only on-going issue is that the color is a bit skewed on the first page of the first pring job of the day. I don''t know if it''s because I''m in Alaska and the air is super dry, or if the temp. in the office is too cold, or if the free ink cartridges that shipped with the printer are junk. Anyway, the first color page of the day is always funky. If I print a "dummy page" in full color before an important document it will usually do ok. It is a waste of ink and paper, but at least I get decent looking images after that. Will see if a new color cartridge will correct the issue and update later.

It is printing, it prints in duplex, it''s connected wirelessly, it scans and copies and faxes. It''s not the best but it''s working, so I''ll keep it. But I don''t have to be happy about it. Give it a couple of years and I''ll buy a different brand.

This printer as with most of the new Lexmark printers have chipped ink cartridge so you can not use refill kits. This reason and this reason only is why this printer never got a 5 star rating. But i can say if you are computer knowledge you can find a way around the ink cartridge problem and reset it. People these days do not have the money to shell out for the way over priced of ink cartridge from the manufacture so they use refill kits to cut the price by almost 3/4.
