Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex

Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex
  • Prints up to 32ppm monochrome output;
  • Automatic duplex printing for two-sided documents;
  • Up to 1200 x 1200 DPI resolution;
  • 300-Sheet standard paper capacity, expandable;
  • 50-Sheet capacity multi-purpose tray for envelopes

Pros: Fast and easy installation; very speedy printing; print quality very good for text; high capacity toner cartridges available (compatible cartridges are reasonably priced).

Cons: Although Brother added a "straight through paper path" apparently for the purpose of dealing with criticisms of a previous model that envelopes and thicker media were crinkled or somewhat rolled, the straight through paper path does not solve the envelope problem. The crinkling of envelopes occurs because the intake feed roller presses the envelope too tightly, causing the envelope to billow as it passes, and the latter part of the envelope is unavoidably crinkled.

Conclusion: This is a great value for a user who does not need to print uncrinkled envelopes with this printer. This printer remains useful to me because I have another printer that handles envelopes well.

Buy Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex Now

I have had other Brother laser printers, always finding them an excellent buy. The HD-5340D continues this trend with high speed printing, duplexing and excellent black/white graphics capabilities for high volume home or small business use. When these printers are available at special pricing, the ''bang-for-the-buck'' is very high. You might be able to find higher quality printing or faster speeds, but for general production work this printer is a work horse and will be very hard to beat. You will not go wrong with the HD-5340D.

I have about a thousand pages through this machine now and it has done well. If you need a simple black and white printer that automatically printson both sides of the paper it is a great deal. Prints very fast on single sided and reasonably fast still on double sided printing. Sharpness is good and documents look nice. Software interface is simple to use but offers a lot of features. No intrusive software like HP which is a real pleasure. This is the second Brother printer I have in my office and I like them both.

2010 01 05 update: Still going strong! Everytime I look at this printer I am filled with joy for how well it does. Have made it through my first toner cartridge and ordered and OEM and an aftermarket toner cartridge both from amazon. The after market one works great too. I went to amazon to order HP ink today but instead I am ordering my third Brother priner today to replace the HP machine instead of buying more HP ink. I just love everything about the Brother pinters I own.

Want Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex Discount?

First off, at the current price (199), buy the Brother HL-5370DW Laser Printer with Wireless Networking and Duplex instead. It is the same printer at the same price with one added feature: wireless. When I bought my printer, it was on sale for 130. Anyway, this review should apply equally to the HL-5370DW.

Need I say the printer is great? I needed to print 600 pages the first time I used it, and it spit them out like bugs bunny with turrets. The duplex feature saved me a lot of paper!

Second, I don''t think this is mentioned anywhere so I''ll point out that the printer comes with a FULL TN620 toner and drum. This means you will get up to 3,000 pages before even buying your first toner!

Set up was a breeze. You don''t even need to run the included CD. Just connect the printer, Microsoft''s found hardware set up will quickly find the driver for you. run the set up and install!

Troubleshooting Advice #1: As another reviewer noted, however, using 3 hole pre-punched paper caused jam after jam until I figured out how to fix it: tape the paper guider thingees on the top of the printer (the two dangling pieces on top of the printer just above the roller over the output tray sorry for the dearth of technical knowledge). I think its supposed to prevent paper curl, but all it does is cause paper jams! Unfortunately, it cannot be easily removed without breaking it off so I just lifted it up using tape (I just used the blue tape that came with the printer) and presto, no more paper jams! This is a nice alternative to simply not using prepunched paper as the other reviewer suggested. I''d rather leave some tape on my printer than have to manually punch holes in 500 sheets!

Troubleshooting Advice #2: Every time I started my computer 8 pages spit out of the printer with the error message ''USBCBIOS''. If anyone else has this problem, it is because you are using an outdated USB 1.0 printer cable. There is an easy fix: use a USB 2.0 printer cable. By the way, the only CON with this printer is that a USB cable is not included in the box. But like most people, I have a million of these things lying around anyway.

So, overall, saves time and money. Worth every penny!

The Printer documentation was very good; everything was included except the cables. The printer works great except when trying to print multiple pages on pre-punched paper in duplex mode. The first page or 2 worked OK but then the paper would become misaligned for the second side of the page. The fix is to not use pre-punched paper. On regular 20 lb paper it works for 100 pages in duplex mode.

However, we''re happy with our new printer! Norm and Diane

I bought the larger cartridges because I had read that they last so much longer. However, after having used a couple of the more expensive cartridges (which cost 50% more than the PG-40) I am convinced they do not last 50% longer than the regular cartridges. In fact I saw very little difference. After examining the boxes, I realize that the larger cartridge only holds 22ml versus 16ml for the regular (37.5% more). It doesn''t even seem to last a third longer to me.

So I will purchase the regular cartridges from now on. Same print quality, but a better value.

Buy Canon PG-50 FINE Ink Cartridge (Black) Now

There is a flaw in the math and logic of a previous reviewer who stated that this cartridge only has 37.5% more ink then the PG-40. The reviewer obviously is missing a very important and significant part of the equation. (i.e. the saturation point of the sponge).

In other words, if the sponge of the cartridge retains 4 ml of the ink. Then the PG-40 cartidge only has 12 ml of effective ink (since 4 ml is retained by the sponge). Therefore a cartidge with 22 ml of ink = 22 ml 4 ml saturation point of sponge = 18 ml of effective ink. Which would be 50% more ink then the PG-40 cartridge.

You have to consider everything that effects the output of a product when performing a scientific or mathematical equation. Neglecting the unobvious parts of the equation and only focusing on what is obvious and is in "front of your face" results in serious miscalculations and errors in reasoning.

Furthermore, by considering how much ink is retained by the sponge, it also shows that you gain more then you realize when you refill ink jet cartridges. Since the sponge is already pre-saturated with ink at the time you refill it, then any ink you add will be used as part of the output when printing pages. So by refilling this cartridge with 22 ml of ink when it runs out of ink, then you effectively have a 26 ml cartridge. And this applies for every refill, since after the first time the cartridge is filled up, the sponge is pre-saturated and any ink added will be directly used by the printer. Something I think a lot of people who refill their inkjet cartridges do not realize.

I believe the most important thing to look at when purchasing an inkjet printer is which printer is the best for refilling. You can buy a very large bottle of bulk ink for around $20. You can get over 2000 printed pages out of a single inkjet cartridge on this printer. This is by far one of the easiest and best inkjet cartridges for refilling. Granted the Canon has a few annoyances when you refill cartridges, but those are easy to get around, and if anyone has any refill questions I''ll answer them in the comment section.

I bought this high capacity cartridge because I read that it works with the Canon ip1700 printer. Apparently this is not true for US printers, but it is true for European printers. Unfortunately, canon support had no help for me, so I opted to manually put the ink from my new PG-50 into my empty PG-40. It was much easier than I expected, as I just had to remove the tops from both cartridges, and swap out the ink soaked sponge. A little super glue and scotch tape to hold the top in place so the ink didn''t evaporate, and it worked great!

After looking at the amount of black ink that the sponge had for both cartridges, it is apparent that the high capacity gives more ink per dollar, but it does take some effort to get it to work.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

After replacing our old Casio cash register (10+ years old) with this model, we''ve been very satisfied. This model is relatively simple to program, easy to load receipt paper, and the receipt item printouts are customizable. It''s a very flexible machine, and with a little initial work, can make life easy. The reporting functions are extensive, even including month-by-month breakdowns of sales. Would have liked a heavier cash drawer, and the bill hold-down levers are somewhat cheaply made, but don''t look like they are in immediate danger of breaking. Overall, happy with this purchase. Four stars out of five, as there are limitations (not serious ones, like item name length and lack of total programming ease) that are not justifiable given the state of modern technology. This, however, applies to most cash registers, and we found this machine to be easier than others.

I purchased these because of the USPS online postage option. I was starting to be fairly active within the ebay community buying and selling, and I decided these little puppy''s would make my life a while lot easier. I was right. :) I was able to get the item I had sold, print postage, and schedule a pickup all from the internet and my own home. I HIGHLY recommend these if you are looking for the print-your-own-postage approach to online selling. They are cheap, unmarked and extra big (they do require cropping) but that didn''t bother me.

Want 200 Half Sheet Shipping Labels Laser/Inkjet USPS UPS Fedex Discount?

I wanted to save money on labels so I went with these. What a complete mistake! First off, both sides of the labels look and feel IDENTICAL. You have no way of knowing which way to put them in your printer unless you peel back an area to test it. Second, there is no perforation in the middle so you''ll have to use the scissors to cut labels in half. This may not be a problem for others, but it''s very annoying for me. I''d rather buy 8.5 x 5.5 or have the middle perforated. I bought self-adhesive so I don''t have to waste time taping/scissoring everything to death. Lastly, and the complete deal-breaker for me, THE ADHESION SUCKS! I''ve used them on regular boxes, padded envelopes, plastic envelopes, they just don''t stick properly. I have to smoothe my hand over the label for a while in order for it to stick decently. The corners still turn up by the time I''ve dropped it off at the PO. Oh yeah, the labels are so thin that they wrip easily. You wouldn''t want to see these labels if they accidently got wet in transit. Do not bother with these. There are better options out there without paying for Avery, etc. Totally overpriced for the quality.

For my printer, I have to "uncurl" the sheets by pulling them across the edge of my table. If I don''t uncurl them, they will jam. Most printers feed with the sheets flat and face up so it may not be a problem for most. My printer feeds face down and turns the sheets face up before exiting. I may have given this product only 3 stars but at less than $6 I''ll put up with a minor problem.

Epson TM-T88III Receipt Printer

Epson TM-T88III Receipt PrinterI saw that there was only one review for this printer, and it was from someone who bought the item used and could not get it working. Frustrating, I''m sure, but not the fault of the printer and not reflective of the overall quality of this receipt printer.

We are a small public library, and this receipt printer is what we use to print out receipts for all our library checkouts. I have been here 3 years and never had a problem with this printer. All we have had to do in that 3 year time frame is replace the receipt paper. It works, prints, does everything it is supposed to do, FLAWLESSLY!

The printer is currently attached to an older XP computer that we use for checkouts. I am upgrading the desktop computer by replacing it with a new HP Windows 7 computer, and expect to be able to continue to use the printer, am simply changing cords to a 25 pin printer to USB cable.

If I do need to update the printer to use it with Windows 7, I would not hesitate to buy a newer version of this same Epson printer (this is version III and printers IV and V are currently available, as well).

I had purchased the Epson TM-T88III Receipt Printer in hope of being able to use the unit within my business. However, the unit did not come with any cables, or any type of software/drivers. I had down loaded the drivers and made numerous/numerous attempts to extract the drivers to get the receipt printer to be recognized within win 7, and to no end, wasn''t able too. I had returned the unit for a refund. I have a newer Epson Receipt model that came with the CD and the installation went perfectly. I think the product was still a good choice, but perhaps a better extraction of the drivers needs to be in place to ensure the install goes well.

Buy Epson TM-T88III Receipt Printer Now

this came to me very dirty. When I opened it a hair ball came out with dirt all over it! Then I had to get all the different cables and still had to download the drivers.Finding the drivers was a significant task. I still haven''t got it working yet. I need to find the drivers I downloaded and then try it out again. That''s what I get for buying used electronics!

I''ve have this cartridge for over 2 years now and have changed the ink tanks about 4 or 5 times. Then, all of a sudden, tha damn thing doesn''t print any blue. I tried everything I could think of to try to save it, and nothing works. Now I''m forced to spend almost another $... to buy a new cartridge just for the ink head. That .... Canon better get their stuff together and start making products that last. Or else they''re gonna lose even more customers.

Want Canon BC-21e 4-Color Ink Cartridge 0899A003 Discount?

Canon makes things that look good in the store, seem reasonable on the price, but when you take them home, they fall apart. Such is the case with the BC-21e cartridge. This thing cost as much as the printer itself, and mine FAILED after only 3 replacements. I don''t abuse my equipment. I use it for normal tasks. Canon''s product was just not ready for regular use.

It would be nice if most people are as fortunate as the last reviewer, who has been able to use this past 5 ink-cartridge changes. Unfortunately, from my experience, I think that''s more the exception to the rule.

Stay away from Canon. It''s a roll of the dice that you are probably going to end up losing.

I''ve had a Canon BJC 5000 for several years and have been very pleased with both it''s performance and it''s printing capabilities. This wide format printer (Canon replaced it in their product line with the BCJ 5100) prints awesome photos, from large (11 x 14) to small (4 x 6). The printer''s only drawback is the cost of the ink cartridges and the fact that they are not individually replaceable. I recently had a failure of the BJC 21e cartridge but ended up buying another printer before I discovered that the printer was fine and that it was only the print head that had failed. A new BJC 21e is all that was necessary to get the printer up and running again. I am please as punch with the printer and, since this should be a review of the BJC 21e cartrige, I find Canon Ink cartridge products second to none!! ps. Another reviewer mentioned loud noises and rumbling when she turned her printer on ... if the printer is plugged into an "always live" outlet, these noises should not occur, and never have with my BCJ 5000. pps. I''ve replaced the BJC 21 and BCJ 21c in excess of 15 times and have only now (several years later) found the need to replace the whole BJC 21e.

I am still surprise to see them selling used versions and supplies online. As far a cost it is very affordable as far as performance it is very slow and a bit noisy but it gets the work done. You can even get the toner and imaging drum replacment at descent prices online still, note there are different quality of toners. You can''t really go wrong with some HP products. I am in the process of buying a refurbrished printer because my old model has aged due to wear and tear, and I can still use my toner and imaging drums, the printers usually does not include tone cartridges so I save money that way. Don''t even accept it as a freebie (as I did) unless you are prepared to pay $1.15 per sheet for color ink. That was my experience with the first color cartridge, which was fully consumed on a total of 20 sheets, 12 of which were heavy color, the others being mixed color and text or very light color. At $17.99 per color cartridge and $14.99 for black I calculate the outrageous, obscene $1.15 per sheet figure for ink. This is about six times greater than the average ink cost for my old HP720c, which unfortunately does not work with my new HP Pavilion PC (no printer port on this model, among other issues). I have vowed to not purchase any HP product in the future if I can possibly avoid it. I just ordered a Canon Pixima to replace this ink hog. On the positive side, the print quality is good, speed is excellent, and color fidelity is fair. The software installed without incident, and the machine is easy to operate, but the HP software is overbearing and constantly trying to sell you something--worse than daytime television.

Want HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One Printer/Scanner/Copier Discount?

This would be an outstanding printer if it weren''t for the fact that it uses the HP21 and HP22 cartridges. These cartridges only hold 5 mL of ink. So it will appear to be an ink hog, but the real problem is that the ink capacity of these cartridges is way too small. In contrast, the HP14 cartridge holds 26 mL of black ink. You would have to replace your HP21 cartridge 5 times to get the same amount of prints as someone who used an HP inkjet printer that uses the HP14 cartridge.

Bottom line, this is a very good printer that you will end up buying a lot of replacement cartridges for. I can''t recommend it for that reason alone.

Bought this all-in-one printer and the install disc was bad. Prints test page every time I turn it on. Won''t print. Jobs get stuck and cannot cancel. Spoke with customer service for 1.5 hours! Yes, that long. They would not refund me and told me that I should have did a better job researching their products. They got that right. All I could get was a refurbished replacement that also performs like crap. HP has lost a customer forever, and I am making it my mission to share with everyone how terrible they are with products and customer service. Canon, meet your next customer.
