HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer (Q7822A#ABA)

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer
  • Professional, network-ready color LaserJet printer
  • Fast print speeds of up to 12 pages per minute
  • 64 MB of built-in memory (expandable to 320 MB)
  • Hi-speed USB port; built-in Ethernet print server
  • Compatible with wide range of media types

I have only ever owned color ink jet printers such as Epson and Brother, but I must say, for Laser printing, HP takes the cake. I do own the HP LaserJet 4 Plus (Monochrome B/W) and it has worked great for me for 6 years plus. This new machine is definitely a major improvement.

First off, it is very easy to set up and you can choose whether to have it run off of a USB port, or you can network it through your system. I personally have it connected to my Wireless D-Link router and I have 2 Windows PCs, 1 Toshiba wireless Laptop, and 2 Wireless Macs networked and ALL of them are able to pick up the HP with the provided HP software disk and all are able to print from it.

It also prints so fast and is remarkably quiet. It is a monster of a machine in size (be prepared to have a nice big space for it, both in heighth, width and length it is (WxLxH) 18.00" x 16.00" x 15.00" but remember, you need room to feed the front of it, and you need room for the wires in back). It takes 4 different cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black CMYK) so this can be costly. The cartridges run about $80 each, so it costs $320 to replace all of them, HOWEVER, they last for a whopping 2500 pages each color. It would take 5 ink cartridges of each color to last that long. And when the toner is low, you get a warning. You can even view the printer on a network from any connected computer and see EXACTLY how many pages are left for each cartridge (based on averages).

The Bad: I''ll try not and leave a bad comment about this as the final thing to say, however, it is quite lousy as a paper feeder. I may be doing something wrong, but I''ve found that you can only print one piece of paper at a time. Sometimes I print out a lot of stuff on one-side of the paper, then, when I''m done looking at it, I turn the paper over, place those in the manual feeder, then use the paper again to do more printing on the other blank side. You can''t really do that with this. And as far as printing Business Cards, or Cardstock, it is not the best. You can''t simply lay the paper on the tray and then have the printer print from it. You have to insert the paper in a special way, wait for the printer to "suck" the paper in, then once it has it, it is able to print. It did print generic Avery labels okay though.

All in all, it is great. Oh, and there''s one astounding point that I forgot to make: it prints on both sides WITHOUT having to change paper around or anything, called duplexing (sorry, I didn''t know these terms before). For example, I had a 14-page document to print out, so I just went to the ''Finishing'' tab and selected ''Print on Both Sides'' and wahlah, it printed 7 pieces of paper, two-sided absolutely flawlessly, without having to touch or insert anything. I eventually printed 200 double-sided brochures on shiny color magazine type paper, and the printing was perfect.

If you don''t need to have this printer on a network, and you don''t need duplex (double-sided) printing, get the much cheaper HP 1600 Color Laser. Otherwise, for a color laser printer under $500 to be able to be networked and duplex among other things, it is really a great deal all around, thus, it gets 4 stars. I did have to deduct one star for the bad paper feeder, but aside from that, it''s superb. Get yours now the cartridges are already in it and full-sized (not sample cartridges), so it is ready to go. You may need a Network cable, but it does come with a USB 2.0 cable just in case you don''t have one. Enjoy and thank you for reading.

I had been looking around for a color laser printer to replace my trusty old Laserjet IV. I''ve gotten really used to duplexing at work, and really wanted to have that option on any new printer I purchased.

There''s plenty of inexpensive color laser printers out there with an option for a duplexer, but often the optional duplex unit is anywhere from 75-100% of the price of the printer itself!

The 2605dn is a nice upgrade from the 2600n, take a look at the feature comparison:

64 MB of memory standard (vs. 16 MB of memory on the 2600n)

PCL6 and PostScript Emulation (vs. Host based processing on the 2600n which can limit compatibility with other operating systems)

12 pages per minute black and white (vs 8 pages per minute on the 2600n)

10 pages per minute color (vs 8 pages per minute color on the 2600n)

Built in duplex unit (vs manual duplex option on the 2600n)

The duplexer works very well, the print quality is excellent and the printer is quiet. Unlike my old Laserjet 4, I don''t hear it at all when it''s asleep, and while printing, it doesn''t bother me at all, even though it''s located right next to my desk.

I previously had a MagicColor 2400W and used it for about a year it had great color and resolution, but the color cartridges came will little toner and my attempt to use a third party refill (to keep the cost down) basically destroyed it by dispersing ink everywhere in the unit.

As a replacement, I looked again and saw good reviews for the HP 2600 series, including the 4000 copy initial toner load and improved toner empty management software. I''ve been particularly impressed with the 2605''s duplex printing that uses a neat trick that kept the cost down. Other good impressions are: it''s significantly quieter than the MagicColor with its one-pass 4 color printing (no faster, but quiet); it only recalibrates when necessary, and very quietly at that; absolutely no jams with a variety of media; very good color resolution, but I wouldn''t use it for a photo printer; standby mode is very low power so I leave it on all the time, giving a relatively fast printout whenever I''m ready; and ultimately the reliability over the past 2 months and more than 1000 pages has sold me on HP getting its act together and becoming the leader in laser printers again.

For normal use (e.g. printing to normal laser printer paper) this printer works well. However, when printing labels such as address labels, CD labels or cardstock, it''s terrible. The fuser doesn''t fuse properly and the toner flakes off. I''ve even had the printing on address labels rub off during shipping causing packages to be returned. My old giant laser printer never had these problems. I am really disappointed because I bought this to produce nice labels, and it''s completely unacceptable for that.

I have had this printer for several months now and have printed a wide variety of material from plain paper, to cardstock, envelopes and labels. All work perfectly without misfeeds. The only trick is to set the paper type in Properties when printing so it will go slower for thick stock.

It''s not photo quality, but great for brochures, marketing material, etc.

It''s quiet and fast. The duplexing works amazingly well.

I recommend this printer highly.

I really like the look of this fax machine, and I love the fact that it''s compact and doesn''t take up much space. I haven''t received any faxes yet, so I don''t know how well the prints will look. So far, I''m having a lot of trouble faxing things out though. I''ve sent faxes 4 times, and 2 of the 4 times, the receiver received missing pages. They sent me a PDF of what I had faxed them, and the missing pages just showed up as a blank pages.

I already threw out the box, so I can''t even return it. I feel like the machine was a waste of money.

We had another Panasonic fax for many years and were very happy with it. When it stopped working one day, there was no question we would replace it with another Panasonic. Interestingly enough, by the time the new model was delivered the old one started to work again, so now I''m looking for a home for it.

What I like better about this Ultra-compact design is that it''s even smaller than the previous one. We have very limited space and this is perfect. One disappointment: we can''t use the same size film, but that''s understandable since the span between the manufacturing time is so great.

It works like a charm and was easy to set up.

What is there to say about address labels? They use an Avery template that is preloaded on most computers in Microsoft Word. They went through the printer with no hitches at all, and they stick to envelopes as well as you want them to. Not a fancy product, by any means, but they do what they''re supposed to do. Only downside: the full retail price seems a little high, but you do get 750 of them.

I love Avery labels! Their free templates are easy to find and download. The labels print flawlessly every time. And they are durable. I really can''t say enough about these terrific time savers. I design my own return address labels with a family portrait on them, I print out address labels for my holiday cards, and I print larger labels for packages, all with ease! If you are looking for high quality labels that won''t let you down, Avery is the way to go...

It''s good to have labels like this around. I have found three uses for them:

1) Mass-mailings such as when I am getting ready to mail out my Christmas Cards.

2) Regular mailing, when I need a big label such as sending a package to my favorite soldier, I simply change the settings on the Word file I use, and print an address that takes up two labels, and simply put them on together. (Don''t underestimate this, I really like it!)

3) Just need a sticker when I want to use a box to send goodies to my favorite soldier, I use a marker to go over any barcodes on the box and then put a sticker over that, to make sure that the Post Office''s scanners won''t try to read them.

So far, I have not had a single problem with putting these labels in my printer, which did worry me at first. Now, I use them with confidence. They are very handy to have around the house, and I am quite pleased with them!

  • 4 individually replaceable ink tanks
  • Photo lightfast technology helps photos last approximately 25 years

Bottomline:

If you want a photo printer go with the i950

If you want a great all-round printer go with the i850.

I owned both the i850 and i950, with the i850 first. The i850 is an great all-round printer printing fast text and photos. Using the Canon photo paper images look great, but simply lack the detail the i950 can provide with 6 inks and almost twice the nozzles and special photo inks. The extra nozzles not only make printing faster (at least for photos) but allow for more detail.

On a picture, printed from Photoshop 6.0, that contained lots of details and color, but specifically a tree with multi-colored (shades) of bark on the i850 the tree looked good with good detail, but on the i950 the tree came to life, was sharper, with more tree/bark detail and color variations becoming visible. There was no question, the i950 was better, noticably for photos.

On mixed media (web page with graphics) the i950 and i850 were the same, but for some reason, the i850 was noticably faster. You get a larger black-ink cartridge w/ the i850 presumably favoring its intended role as a excellent all-round printer.

If price is an issue, the i850 is the printer for you ... If photo quality is the most important, then the i950 is for you ... Can''t make up your mind? Go with the i950, the extra money is worth the results.

The i850 produces the best photo prints I''ve ever seen from an inkjet. I looked at the HP 7350 and a few from Epson because I''ve never owned a printer from any other manufacturer. When I started to read the reviews about this printer, I decided to check one out in person. I was immediately impressed by the quietness and speed -and WOW, the finished print -I couldn''t find any flaws. I thought my HP 970 printed great photos but the Canon blows it away. I''ll keep the HP because it still is a great all-around printer and I''ve only had it for a 2 yrs. Inkjet technology has made some great advances the past few years! And Mac users, this is a great printer because it works perfectly with OS 10.2 Jaguar -including borderless prints. Just download the current drivers from Canon''s web site. This is a fantastic printer for the price. A side note, one reason I decided to go with this Canon printer is because I''ve been very pleased with their scanners too. I have the N1240 and it produces great color tones with all my photo scanning. I highly recommend the i850 printer.

I purchased this printer 2 months ago and have found the perfect home printer. The main reason I was in the market was the high cost of "color" inkjet cartridges that I went through like candy in my old Canon and HP printers. I did my research and I wanted a printer that had separate color tanks so that if I ran out of cyan ink I wouldn''t have to trash the whole cartride that most likely had plenty of yellow and magenta inks. The individual tanks are far cheaper to buy (at about ~$$$ each) than a new color cartridge (~$$$).

Now for performance. The output quality is fantastic. I have printed out over 40 photos on 4x6 glossy photo paper (I have used 3 different premium glossy brands with little, if any, discernable difference in sharpness or color fidelity. I work for a large major medical equipment manufacturer and we ditribute "low-end" printers for over $10,000 that you would not be able to tell the difference in quality with the naked eye given the same source input. The bottom line is that the photo print capability of this printer is nothing short of stunning. I am also more than happy with the general purpose color and document printing on standard high resolution paper contrary to a number of reviews (usually from editorial product reviewers) that I have seen elsewhere.

The speed of both photo and general purpose printing is nothing short of astounding. I couldn''t believe my eyes at the output speed of photo prints and general purpose documents. Documents came out nearly as fast as a laser printer I have at work. And the pinter is so darn quiet. Except for the normal "thunk" as the paper is fed into the machine, I can barely hear the printhead while it is in operation.

In short, if you are looking for a printer that is miserly on printing supplies that produces fabulous photo and general purpose output, then GET THIS MACHINE!

Want Canon i850 Photo Printer Discount?

As everyone else has noted, this is a very good printer for the cost. The performance will probably be sufficient for all but the most particular users. I just printed out a 8.5"x11" borderless print and cannot find a flaw in it. And the print out was relatively quick: 2''30" for a 1.5MB file.

The printer comes with the following:

CD with 3 or 4 software programs, the drivers, and the complete documentation

quick start guide

(really) quick start poster which was enough to get everything running

sample pack of the Canon 4"x6" Photo Paper Pro

print head, ink cartridges, and power cord

As noted by other reviewers, a cord to connect the printer to your computer is not included. I bought a Belkin F3U133-06 USB Device Cable (6 Feet) which has the square connector for the printer and the flat connector for the computer. The printer can also use a parallel port cable, but I have not tested this.

Installation was pretty simple and worked fine with my old (''97) Windows 98 desktop and my new Windows 2000 laptop. I''ve mostly used the Easy Photo-Print program to print images. It automatically makes the proper printer settings so you don''t have to worry about that.

Another nice feature is the Auto Power Setting available from the Maintenance tab. The printer can be setup to turn on when a document is printed to it and turn off after a certain period on inactivity.

Anyway, highly recommended.

I purchased the Canon i850 on recommendation from the Canon rep that I met in a store. Well......this is the best printer I have ever seen for [its price].

The colors are superb, and the B&W print looks like it came from a laser.

The set-up instructions are on a separate sheet, and worked the first time. I loaded the software on my mac, and printed within minutes. Photos printed on 4x6" glossy paper look like they came from a professional photo lab.

Word of warning. The image software that comes with the printer works a bit too well. When you first start it up, it finds ALL images in the folder you direct it to, and immediately displays them on the screen so you can choose which ones to print. It found a couple of images that, ahem, I did not want anyone else to see. Oh well, I guess they didn''t belong on my hard drive anyway?!?

All in all, an excellent printer and software combo. You will enjoy it too.

I''ve been using Ilford paper for some time and have always been extremely satisfied with the quality! Yes,photo paper is expensive, but the fiber paper is definitely worth investing. After working with the fiber paper, I noticed a great difference in my prints. Fiber gives your prints much more tonal range and that satisfying texture(which is a little bit thicker and denser) than the normal glossy papers.

A 25 pack of 8.5 X 11 B%W photo paper. This is Ilford Multigrade IV fiber paper, not the RC (Resin coated)that is more commonly used. If your buying for the first time for a class do double check what is required. I required it for my class as it''s an Art photography class and we will be exhibiting final work. I use the fiber for my final enlargements and RC for my contact sheets. As the description says, fiber has a look all it''s own and processing drying is not as easy as RC for the inexperienced.

This product arrived exactly on time and exceeded my expectations. I had previously used some cheap-o Michael''s calligraphy pens that set my interest in penmanship ablaze. This pen, however, has taken it to a whole other level. I find that I can''t go anywhere without itit is a part of my morning routine: Phone? Wallet? Headphones? Keys? Pen? Check check double check.

As far as writing goes, it''s perfect as far as I can tell. I haven''t used a $1000 pen before so I can''t exactly compare it to anything but if you''re like me and want to explore another hobby, this pen won''t break the bank.

I do have one complaint. I purchased ink and the converter with the pen. The ink came at the same time as the pen but it took almost two weeks until the converter arrived. By that time, I had already run through the ink cartridge that came with the original shipment. I would recommend buying some extra cartridges with this or perhaps Amazon might consider throwing one in there???

If you are taking a photography, double-check ALL of the photo enlarging paper specifications that the instructor provided BEFORE ordering this. I actually needed RC paper, but I didn''t realize that this was fiber paper. I tried using it once and it was awful. The developing process took a half an hour longer, it never dries completely, and it curls up on the edges. Its technically supposed to be better quality, but its really intended for photographers who are NOT beginners, and aren''t working on a deadline. Not great if you''re new to the process, or have little patience.

HP Color LaserJet 2550N Printer

HP Color LaserJet 2550N Printer
  • 600 x 600 dpi color and black resolution
  • 264 MHz processor, 64 MB memory, expandable to 192 MB
  • Manual duplexing; includes second input paper tray
  • Parallel, USB 2.0, and 10/100Base-TX Ethernet/Fast Ethernet RJ-45 ports
  • Up to 4 ppm color, 20 ppm black; PC and Mac compatible

I bought the printer because I read reviews saying that it had excellent print quality. The fact that it was supposed to be noisy and slow was ok, since I don''t print high volumes and the price of the printer is very good for a network color laser.

I found the print quality to be disappointing, however. It''s better than an inkjet but not nearly as sharp as a monochrome laser. I can''t tell whether it''s worse than comparable color lasers--it''s just not as good as I expected.

The thing that really ticked me off is that the cartridges expire after a set number of pages even if there''s ink left in them. At $600 for a replacement set of cartridges, this sleazy trick can make a sizeable difference in operating cost. The effect is even worse when you get an error with a stream of mis-printed pages with just a couple of characters on each page. Better be around the printer to make sure there''s no error that spews out 50 pages of gibberish (there goes $10). I hope HP cleans up its act now that Fiorina is gone, because a reputation for sleaziness is easy to get and hard to recover from. At least the printer shipped with full cartridges, not half-empty ones (a trick other companies use).

On the plus side, HP''s customer support was excellent. Initially, the printer would sometimes work and sometimes not, completely unpredictably. The HP representative correctly diagnosed the problem as a physical problem with the Ethernet cable. To my surprise, replacing the Ethernet cable fixed all the problems. The rep was bright, spoke flawless English and fixed the problem quickly. Overall the support was outstanding.

On the plus side: low price for a color network laser, relatively compact size, reasonable printing cost per page, reliable operation, user-friendly software, excellent HP support.

On the minus side: slow speed, noisy operation, built-in electronic cartridge expiration counter, disappointing print quality (not awful, but not as good as expected from reviews).

Overall, the questionable print quality tips the scale against rating this printer higher.

Buy HP Color LaserJet 2550N Printer Now

I have liked HP printers in the past and have been very pleased with my LaserJet 5L which I have owned for ten years. To take advantage of HPs trade in program, I decided to upgrade to a 2550n color laser printer. I read the first review here, on this printer and dismissed the low rating as a fluke. I purchased the printer anyway, and then became disgusted.

First, it failed right out of the box. I was very careful to follow each instruction to the letter and once everything was installed, the failure light would turn on after cycling through the cartridges a few times. After I power cycled it a few times, it finally passed it''s diagnostics and was ready. I print a test page, it looks good. I print another and it fails. Power cycle again, the printer is ready. I print two more test pages and it fails again. This flakey behavior continued again after I connected the printer to my PC. I could print a few pages once, then again, but after the third or fourth time it would randomly fail. This had nothing to do with paper jams, but seemed to occur when switching from one color cartridge to another. The simple LEDs that flash at you tell nothing about what is wrong, so I would strongly recommend buying a printer with a LCD display.

The software was difficult to install, especially when I wanted to have it use the ethernet port instead of the USB interface. The printer options are very minimal and not comparable to printers like the Samsung CLP-510n which allow things like printing multiple pages on the same sheet. By the way, I don''t necessarily recommend the Samsung printer but the user manual can be downloaded from their web site and the printing options are quite comprehensive.

If the LaserJet 2550n would remain idle for 20-30 minutes, it would suddenly spring to life and make all sorts of noises when there was nothing to print. It sounded like the cartridges were tumbling around. Why can''t it do something like this immediately and then just stay quiet? When printing, it is also quite noisy as it cycles through the cartridges.

The printer is slow. I sent it a picture and it took slightly over a minute. I did it immediately again (it should be all warmed up) and it still took another minute. The processor inside the printer is too slow and real-world page per minute numbers may be disappointing. The only real positive thing I could say is the print quality was good, even for pictures, provided that they are not expanded in size.

Some people like the OKI C5150n or the Brother HL-2700cn. I haven''t seen what the Brother prints like, but the OKI is quiet and print quality is as good as the HP while printing much faster. Dell also sells a color printer in this class, the 3100cn. Although the HP printer may be the smallest, I didn''t like the noise and reliablity and so I think there are much better choices out there.

This printer was purchased to be shared among 4 co-workers. It was great until we "Needed" to replace the black cartridge after two months. A new HP cartridge was purchased and every thing worked fine for two weeks. Then the drum light came on. I thought it was a little soon for a new drum so I called HP support. They said that basically every time the black cartridge needs to be replaced the drum will also. That''s $100 for the black and $200 for the drum. A drum was purchased and the printer seemed to work fine. Then the yellow cartridge went out. I thought this was very odd since color is not used very much. I did a little research on this printer and found out that you can replace the microchips on the drum and cartridges. I ordered them from e-bay. I installed them on the old drum unit and surprise, surprise it worked. Then installed one on the old black, and the old yellow, and you guessed it they still worked as well. They worked for two months until the black toner actually ran out and left streaks on the page.

Print quality overall is good, but the shaddy cartridge replacement, and noise will have me looking for a new laser next year.

Want HP Color LaserJet 2550N Printer Discount?

I''ve always liked HP''s printer quality. In fact, I''ve had several black and white HP laser printer in the past, and all have performed flawlessly for years and years. Recently, then, I decided to "upgrade" (yeah, that''s a joke -upgrade) to a color laser printer -stop using the expensive ink jet I thought!

Well, we have two of these 2550n printers in the building here, and both have developed a similar problem after about 700 pages. Neither one will print anything but blank pages, and both develop some strange series of lights on the control panels. There doesn''t seem to be any consistency in the light ups either. One time, the drum light might come on. Another time, all four toner lights will come on. A third time, we might get just two of the toner lights, and still another time, we might get the toner and drum lights on only this time they''ll be blinking.

Unplug them and leave them unplugged for a few days, and you might get a green "go" light right after turning it on again. If you''re really lucky, you might get a clean printout, but that''s the only printout you''re going to get until the printer has rested a few more days again.

Yeah, it''s hard work being a color laser printer! Don''t, I repeat, DON''T buy one of these printer -not even used! They''re bad, BAD news!!!!!

The printer puts out acceptable business output (nowhere near photo quality) but I am currently printing a graphic that ended up at 24mb to the printer and it has been 38 minutes processing over a USB 2.0 connection. When I send the same graphic to our 3500 color laser, it processes in about 18 seconds and prints in 30. HP tech support told me that this was acceptable for such a "large" file and perhaps I should reduce the file size. Since I''m printing full-page graphics and not postage stamps, I guess I''ll look for a good inkjet...and certainly NOT an HP!
