Just unpacked and set up the printer. Initial results on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets are great. Excellent quality, good speed, setup went without a hitch.

Unfortunately, no matter what I do it mangles #10 envelopes fed through the manual feeder. I believe I''ve tried all the pertinent thickness settings in the driver, including envelopes, envelope thin, envelope thick, etc. Every envelope comes out badly wrinkled. The envelopes are ordinary Staples #10s, which I''ve used without much trouble in a Laserjet5 for years (the heat in that printer does glue the flap a bit, but just lightly. I''m debating returning the Brother HL-5240. The online FAQs from Brother seem completely useless, as they mostly repeat the manual''s instructions for inserting the envelopes.

Anyone have ideas on getting around this? Are there special envelopes that will work?

If you don''t need envelopes, I''d give this **** or maybe even ***** based on just a few hours use. For envelopes, it doesn''t even rate one star, and that makes me nervous about the overall quality.

**UPDATE***: I''ve managed to get at least some envelopes to print cleanly. Thanks to the comments posted by John Bissel on the HL-5250, as those led me in the right direction. Anyway, what''s worked for me is:

* Office Depot sells some #10 envelopes under their own brand name that are specifically listed as working with laser and inkjet printers.

I found those wrinkle a lot less than the many other #10s I tried.

* Use the com-10 size and envelope-thin media.

* Here''s the tricky part. Those two fixes get you close, but there''s still a bit of a wrinkle on the trailing edge. Thanks to Mr. Bissel, I found the secret pressure release flippers in the back of the printer. Yes they are documented. No, they are not mentioned under envelopes, or in the general guides to the printers features. No they''re not in the printed documentation. You have to go into the PDF user guide that gets installed along with the printer (use the Windows Start/Programs to find it). Then you have to look in the troubleshooting section under crinkled pages or some such. Then you find the flippers. It warns you to fip them up only for envelopes, then down, which would be a huge hassel. Like Mr. Bissel, I''ve had fine luck leaving them up all the time. Perhaps my output on regular pages is a tad less dark.

So, now I''m happy. Printer is great. I should say that I sent a query to Brother''s email-based support service. They promise response in 1 business day. It''s been 4 days, and so far I''ve heard nothing.

I bought the Brother HL-5240 Laser Printer the last week of December,

2005. This is my first laser printer, and I wanted something to replace an

inkjet printer which became erratic after 25,000 cyles. I''m what I call serious

retired, I''m not going to use the printer in business but I do a lot of printing

pursuing my hobbies of genealogy, bridge, and photography. I wanted a

productive black and white printer mostly for text or line type art work, I do

my photo printing on an Epson R1800.

My first impression was that setup was a breeze. I am running Windows

XP Professional in a Hewlett Packard Workstation xw4100 computer. The

quick setup sheet led me through what to do, and everything loaded off the single

CD furnished with the unit. I understand that if I had Windows XP 64x version,

it would have been necessary to go to Brother''s website for the printer driver.

I loaded up some paper, and ran a few prints of things I had in my hard

drive. Yes, it really DOES print 30 pages a minute, of printed text, by the stopwatch!

However, there is a ten second delay after sending a print command before the

first copy begins.

With regard to paper. I had LOTS of inkjet paper on hand, and I ran a

couple hundred sheets of Hammermill 24 lb inkjet through the Brother before

I discovered, buried in the Manual, a caution NOT to use inkjet paper! So I got

some house brand 24 lb printing paper from the local office supply.

I thought a good test would be to print out the manual for the unit, since it''s

on the CD but there''s no paper copy included in the box. Besides, I needed a

copy of the manual, and having it on the computer was inconvenient. So I

offer here a set of instructions for BROTHER HL-5240 owners who would

like to give their new unit a bit of a test, and get a manual besides: The Manual

for the unit runs 137 pages. My instructions will print it out in booklet mode on

35 sheets of paper, using both sides. It will take approximately six minutes.

I assume that you have the printer up and running, that you have loaded

the bottom tray with paper, and that you have located the Manual Print (upper)

tray, it folds down from the front and some flaps extend; it is light gray plastic.

Click on the HL-5240 Program from the program list on your desktop.

Click on USERS GUIDE IN PDF FORMAT. I assume you have Adobe Acrobat

and can read the user''s guide. Click on your part of the World Map (USA Canada

for me). This will bring up the Manual for the HL-5240. Click on FILE. On FILE,

Click on PRINT; click on PROPERTIES. At Duplex/Booklet, select BOOKLET.

Click on ADVANCED; click on the A/B panel. Next click on BINDING OFFSET

and enter the figures 0.4 inches for the binding offset. Next, OKAY each window

in turn.

Now, I have just given you the instructions to the printer to print a booklet

with the left edge left unprinted for margin so you can punch and bind the result.

Give the print command for using lower tray paper.

The printer will begin printing after a minute or so, and should complete

printing one side. This will require about 90 seconds. Draw a light pencil arrow

on a corner of the pile of printout before removing it, pointing toward the printer.

Take the pile of printout, jog it so it is nice and even, and put it blank side

up in the upper tray with the pencil arrow pointing toward the printer. Click on MP

tray on the computer and the printer should complete its run in another 90 seconds.

I purchased this printer for it''s fast printing speed and long life in toner and drum, but it''s really been a let down. The printer has this habit of creasing and wrinkling the paper on the first 2 pages of every print out. So now I have to send 3 copies of everything I want to the printer, wasting paper and ink. I''ve tried different kinds of paper, and every troubleshooting option offered to me by the fine folks at Brother, but it continues to do this. I''ve looked around the Internet, and found this is a common defect in the 5240 and 5250 models. It''s really an inconvenience, and now I have to purchase a new printer because it''s such a pain. If you love to be frustrated and angered over print quality and paper use, this is the printer for you. Otherwise, avoid at all costs.

Have two of these printers. Both began creasing the center of paper after a short period of use. Creases got worse and they started to jam. Went to Brother online tech support. Was told to use other paper. Emailed back that I used high quality paper but was told that was the cause. Not so. This seems to be a common problem with this printer and Brother will not acknowledge. Past Brother printers work great. Not sure I will try another Brother.

I''ve been shopping on Amazon for about 8 years, and I''ve never really written a review until now -With all the supporting reviews on other products I''ve bought, there''d been nothing really to add. I saw this at the local Fry''s on display with the newest Canon 10-ink printer. I have a Canon i9900 so thought I''d give it a try, but Fry''s had it for more than 2x the cost that Amazon did. This product worked great. THe software is very, very easy and the videos that come on the installation disk showing you how to construct the album make it very easy to figure out. Had it not been for the videos, though, I''d have been a little scared to try it. We just had twins so I used this to create a little album for my wife to carry around. In this digital age, we really don''t have *albums* anymore so when you see people around, you''re constantly fumbling with your phone or the little viewfinder on the camera (which doesn''t work so well when the sun is out or in any bright environment). These little 3x3 albums with 12 pics with custom pics on the front and back cover are an excellent way to show off. If you have a good printer, and are careful about the assembly, they look very professional. I made my first one last night. It took about an hour including some photo editing outside of ZoomAlbum, making test prints, picking out pics (this took longest) and changing the layout around. Now that I know what I''m doing, I bet I could make one in about 10 mins. The part that takes the longest if figuring out what 12 pics to use for the inside pages and what pic to use on the outside cover!

What is really nice about this software and what makes it easy to use is that the software pretty much does it all. I used 15MP, 5MB jpg files taken by my camera and the software took care of it. You can resize the photos, crop and center them right in the included ZoomAlbum software with drag and drops, a slider bar and a couple of clicks. You can add text and borders, etc if that''s your thing (but I like plain the best). Though it is very intuitive, the help and product walk-through is excellent if your intuition isn''t very computer like.

If there was one suggestion I''d make it would be to allow you to select 2 pics for the cover instead of one. Since the album is 3x3", the cover is really one 6x3" piece and can fit 2 pics. I wanted to do 2 pics -one son on the front cover and the other son on the back cover, but the software only allows for 1 cover pic. It''s not insurmountable, though. I used a freeware photo editor called PhotoScape to create a single pic made of of the 2 pics I wanted use on the cover. I then used that combined photo in the ZoomAlbum software as the cover pic.

I guess it would also be cool if you could do so minor photo editing in the ZoomAlbum software like brightness or convert to black and white. Then again, it''s easy enough to do that with so many other freeware softwares out there. For about $5.50 including ink, you get a professional looking photo book that you can take with you anywhere -a great deal.

The ZoomAlbum software doesn''t work with my HP9180 printer. I suppose the paper would be ok if the software worked. Looking at the ZoomAlbum website, the software hasn''t been updated since 2007. No wonder it doesn''t work.

This little album is adorable and so easy to do after the first one which took a little time since I have no experience constructing a book. I do have a Canon printer and I do have experience editing photos which seemed to be a plus after reading other reviews. If I didn''t have a Canon I would have done a trial using fast printing and grey scale. I did laminate the cover before putting it all together. I was concerned the laminate might be too stiff but it turned out just perfect. I''m am very excited by the finished product that looks professionally done. I might add this software must have been designed by a woman because they thought of every little detail except one where I had to merge two photos for the cover and that was done outside of the capabilities of the Canon software.

I paid extra and purchased a new Brother brand toner because I wanted to be sure I had no problems. In spite of that, the Cyan cartridge leaked in the machine. I called Brother support: I was instructed to perform several procedures (most of which I had already done) to confirm the printer was okay. After weeks of back and forth, I was told that the toner and the printer were out of warranty. I was welcome to pay the authorized service shop to inspect and clean my printer, and was advise that I was stuck with the leaking toner. Very frustrating. . . . Fast forward to the end: with the assistance of Amazon''s customer support, we were able to get the toner replaced. The replacement cartridge (and three passes at cleaning my printer) solved the problem.

Lessons learned:

1. purchase your toner cartridges just before you install them don''t let them sit on the shelf long enough to risk going over the 90 day warranty

2. I can''t rely on Brother customer / technical support for urgent resolution or problem ownership. Local support is only through authorized service shops. If you aren''t willing to deal with that, then consider a service contract.

3. Amazon''s customer support is outstanding. Consider engaging them if your seller, vendor, or manufacturer fails you on a product you bought through Amazon. Be sure to document all of your interactions.

I will probably still purchase Brother toner (from Amazon), but will not assume they are perfect. I will be sure to install them within 30 days of receipt. My page volume is low enough that paying a little extra for a new cartridge is not a big deal.

I bought these to use for labeling canning lids and they fit the regular-mouth lids perfectly. I wasn''t crazy about Avery''s design software (lost them a star) and the templates really weren''t what I needed. So, I designed my own labels in Publisher, saved as a commercial-printing gif, and copy/pasted it onto the blank template Avery has available on their website as a free download. That worked fine and I got exactly the design I wanted. I just reordered them.

These labels are of good quality, with the right amount of gloss, to produce labels with a professional appearance. Nothing about these labels will have a homemade look, unless of course you want it that way. Avery offers dozens of templates on their website, allowing you to chose from a multitude of designs.

In recent years, Avery has introduced a line of labels with a unique twist. The backing paper can be bent in such a way that peeling off a label is far easier than with traditional labels. That can be a big advantage, especially with mailing labels, but is also handy for labels such as these that you might not remove from the sheet all at once.

Although I am very pleased with the product and its outcome, there are certain areas that could be improved. Avery''s website now requires registration in order to download patterns. I think that''s unnecessary. The patterns are Microsoft Word compatible and allow users to change the text fields. Yet unlike the software that they offer for mailing labels, which allows you to repeat the information for all labels on a page, come up with individual ones, or import data from a file, these patterns require you to update each of the twelve labels separately. If you are making many of the same label, that seems like an unnecessary task. If you are producing more than one design, it still assumes that you are producing a fixed number of any particular design on each page, each time you use a pattern.

With their mailing label software, it''s easy to make a "one off" label. That''s not the case with these, because it would require deleting each field and background in each of the eleven other labels, and assuring that you have filled in the correct label, in order to do so. I could understand a pattern that gets filled in for an entire page, so you can print a large run of them. I could understand the flexibility of allowing each of the labels to be different. But I don''t think they came up with a good compromise.

Ten sheets is not a lot, but 120 labels is a considerable number. Make sure you test your printing on standard paper to assure that your results are what you want them to be. One nice thing about the label stock is that the sheets are symmetrical so you don''t have to worry about which direction is the top or bottom when you feed the paper.

All in all, I can''t complain about the labels themselves, but Avery has spoiled me with better software in the past. Depending on how you plan to use them, the software may fit your needs well, or may require more work than should be necessary. Or you may see fit to use them by hand when needed.

These are good quality glossy labels, so you should be able to get sharp color images with a good ink jet printer. The package contains 10 sheets of labels with 12 labels on each sheet (120 total labels).

My only concern with this product is the templates. Avery has web-based software to create and print your labels, but that is very clunky if you are printing several different designs.

Avery also has a Microsoft Word template that you can download, which is great if you are using Microsoft Word (or a compatible word processor) to create your labels. These round labels encourage you to create labels that are not text-based, however, so Microsoft Word may not be your first choice of editor. If you''re using a graphics editor, you may have to export your graphics to JPEG files, then import those into Microsoft Word, then print them. This can be a big hassle and you may lose image quality if you''re not careful.

It would be nice if Avery provided templates for popular graphics editors, but I could not find any. Avery apparently does have Adobe-compatible templates for some of their labels, but not for these round ones.
