One of the major complaints about the iPad when it was first introduced was that one could not print from it. Apple heard us and with the release of IOS (iPhone Operating System) 4.2 the company included Apple Air Print a technology that allows, or is supposed to allow the iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch to print wirelessly from the device to an ever-increasing number of Hewlett Packard printers like the "HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Inkjet Printer."

Hewlett Packard upped the ante with this All-n-One (AIO) unit by including wireless and giving the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Inkjet Printer an e-mail address (@hpeprint.com address) from which one can print from any computer, iPad--or other mobile device--via a technology called "HP e-Print." One can also print wirelessly to an Apple mobile device like an iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone etc. via Apple Air Print.

Un-Packing

Make no mistake the "HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus" is a hefty printer checking in a 21 pounds. And while the unit does not require a two-man lift, it will require some finesse to get it out of the box and onto a flat surface. One unboxed it took me a little less than 15 minutes to completely assemble the printer including the duplexer unit. Thankfully the power supply is built-in, so no heavy power brick to find a place for.

Network Setup

Before connecting the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus network via Ethernet (RJ-45), or Wireless the decision must be made to utilize one or the other communications medium, but not both. USB can be utilized with either configuration. Since I wanted my iPad to "speak" to the printer and print I installed the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus utilizing wireless and USB and I can print either way as well as utilize the scanner to print-to-computer. Wireless set-up was effortless using DHCP; all I needed to know was the network WPA2 passcode.

Wireless Printing & e-Print

One of the selling points of the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO is of course the ability of the iPad to print to the device either wirelessly (Air Print) or via e-Print. I am happy to report that both work!

As I stated above Apple IOS version 4.2 shipped with Air Print, which allows the iPad to wirelessly "talk" to Air Print enabled printers like the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. Once the printer was set up on the wireless network I could see the printer on the iPad from Air Print enabled applications like Safari, select the printer and print. G that was it, no setup needed on the iPad.

HP''s e-Print also works like a charm, most of the time. With e-Print the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is assigned a customizable e-mail address to which one can forward e-mail''s to be printed from iPad, iMac, iPod, or PC as long as the printer is connected to the Internet. This feature works reasonably well; it is supposed to be able to print attachments, but this is a hit or miss proposition; i.e. sometimes it works, sometime not, sometimes it print half a page. However, overall, I am pleased with e-print.

Software Installation

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is connected primarily to an Apple iMac 2.7GHz machine with 4GB RAM, 1TB hard drive running OS X Lion Version 10.7.2. Out of the box the software disc will not work with Lion 10.7.2, so I had to download a software update from Apple and another from HP, but both worked seamlessly and I was able to get up and running with full functionality (including scan-to-computer) in under 15 minutes. And I have to say for the record I like the iMac interface for the printer better than the Windows 7 interface.

Printing

Pretty straight forward; the software installation process installed a full set of print drivers which in turn give you complete control over the printing process, including two-sided printing. The HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can also print from inserted USB flash drives and or MMC/SD Media cards.

Scanning

The HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus offers up both a 50-sheet ADF and flatbed scanner for use. Initialing the scanning process can be accomplished from the included software, inserting a page(s) into the ADF, or the units control panel. Once an item is placed into the ADF or on the flatbed scanner glass surface, you can push the Scan button on the front panel, at which time you choose where to scan to: Computer, USB Flash Drive, or Memory Card. Once a destination is chosen, you can then chose to scan to file (.PDF is an option), e-mail, or photo.

Copy Process

This process, like printing is pretty straight forward; both color and black & white copies can be made, up to 99 at a time. Because there is a duplexer installed two-sided copies can be made in a number of different configurations, including 1-side original/ 1-side copy; 1-side original/ 2-side copy; 2-side original/ 1-side copy; 2-side original/ 2-side copy. Copies can also be enlarged up to 144%, or reduced down to 25% of original.

Working with Photos

As stated above, the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus will accept input from a number of commercially available portable memory storage devices, slots for which are located on the left hand side of the printer underneath the cartridge insertion flip down panel. Simply insert the memory card and the photos it contains are displayed on the small 4.6" touch-screen color display on the right hand side of the unit.

Conclusion

Overall I like the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO, because it works seamlessly with my iMac and I can print to it from my iPad. The design is a little austere; there are no buttons to push because everything is controlled from the color (touch screen) display panel, which might prove problematic if it ever decides not to work. But, there is always the control set on the computer, so...

The built-in wired Ethernet capability, coupled with USB and wireless make the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO Inkjet Printer a versatile, flexible unit that is ideal for a small home office setting and well as workgroup setting. I''ll start by saying that I think this is an excellent machine.

My journey of buying a multi-function printer started with purchasing an HP Officejet Pro 8500 all-in-one. This was a top-rated machine, and I was excited when it arrived. Unfortunately, the particular 8500 that we received, although easy to setup, jammed constantly. After a week of jamming headaches, I headed online to Amazon to arrange for a return. When considering a replacement, I saw that the 8600 series OfficeJet printers had arrived, so I needed to consider them as well. At only about $25 more than I had paid for the 8500, I took the plunge.

The first decision with the 8600 was which of the three models to order. The basic model was quite attractively priced, and has features similar to the Plus and Pro models. The Plus model''s big advantage (in our case) was the larger display. Other features separating it from the basic model are the larger automatic document feeder (50 vs 35 sheets) and a slightly faster print speed (20 vs 18 ppm black and 16 vs 13 ppm color, according to the HP website.) Had we upgraded to the "Premium" model, we could have added an additional 250-sheet paper tray. The Premium model might be appropriate for a small workgroup which does does lots of printing, but in our case, would be extreme overkill based on our printing volumes -one ream of paper can last us many months!

Display: This printer went to my mother-in-law''s house and she''s not the most tech-savvy consumer. We chose the "Plus" model because of the larger display and it was a great choice! The display is great large, bright, and intuitive. My mother-in-law has no problem completing most tasks and following the very good on-screen video instructions.

Configuration: The printer was easy to configure without even connecting to a computer using the on-screen display to connect to the wi-fi network. In all, it probably took about 10-15 minutes, most of which was allowing the printer to complete its self-configuration checks and print head alignment. The software was easy to install on the computer, and the computer was able to discover the printer on the network almost instantly using the drivers on the included CD-ROM.

Printing: Print quality is quite good and very fast -the last time I purchased an inkjet printer was about 7 years ago, and the one this one replaced was 8 years old. Speed has come a long way in that time!

Copying: Again, this was quite simple. I especially like the easy on-screen options for dealing with two-sided originals and copies, allowing for all duplexing options without any additional fuss or difficulty.

Faxing: Also a straightforward operation, there were a few points worthy of comment. First, the fax self-configuration was great, and I appreciated the self-check during the setup process so that sending a "test fax" to someone was not necessary. Also, it worked fine with the AT&T U-Verse digital phone service -not all fax devices play well with digital phone services, so this was very nice. My mother-in-law also commented about how she appreciated that you can enter the destination fax number before inserting the document to be faxed into the feeder a nice feature as the destination fax number is usually at the top of the front page, which is often hidden by the document feeder once inserted.

Scanning: The network scanning was quite easy, and worked seamlessly something not true of all network scan devices. My previous experience had been that devices scanning over the network have some usability problems, and that they work best when connected directly to the computer. No issues here, however it worked great right out of the box with no physical connection to the computer.

Driver: The included drivers on the CD-ROM worked just fine, as well as those downloaded from the HP website. My one small complaint is that when auto-discovering the printer using Windows 7, Windows fails to install a usable driver. The user must first go to the HP website, download an appropriate driver, then install the driver directly. These extra steps were time-consuming and annoying but not enough for me to deduct a star.

Ink: The ink cartridges were very easy to insert and replace. I particularly appreciate that they are simple units and don''t have the tape-covered electrical contacts common on the older generation of cartridges which could sometimes come off during installation.

Overall: I give this printer a strong recommendation, and 5 stars. You may need to decide which model is best for you -depending on pricing, the larger display of the "Plus" model might not be worthwhile, and the price of the basic model is quite attractive. For us and our given user, the larger display was key and worth the extra cost. I''d buy one again!

Purchased this printer to replace another HP printer that had served it''s usfullness. This printer obviously is a work horse and prints out quality prints and photes without hesitation. Have tested it on almost everything without a glitch. Was easy to set up and meshed into our wireless system without hassle. 1) easy to install/setup.

2) very fast.

3) duplex printing.

4) wireless.

5) etc...

UNTIL... I tried printing photos.

I have two type of photo paper Home:

1)Genuine HP "Arm&Leg cost" photo paper.

2)The very popular Costco (kirkland) premium photo paper.

I had no problem with the HP paper.

The only way I managed to have the printer feed the kirkland paper,

was by sticking a piece of masking tape (as found on a forum), on the

back of the paper. This gave enough grip to the picking roller, to

make the paper work with this printer.

The same paper works flawlessly in other HP printers and other brands.

If you plan on using this printer for photo printing without using HP photo

paper, I suggest you to google "hp 8600 will not feed photo paper"

Epson TM-T88III Receipt Printer

I saw that there was only one review for this printer, and it was from someone who bought the item used and could not get it working. Frustrating, I''m sure, but not the fault of the printer and not reflective of the overall quality of this receipt printer.

We are a small public library, and this receipt printer is what we use to print out receipts for all our library checkouts. I have been here 3 years and never had a problem with this printer. All we have had to do in that 3 year time frame is replace the receipt paper. It works, prints, does everything it is supposed to do, FLAWLESSLY!

The printer is currently attached to an older XP computer that we use for checkouts. I am upgrading the desktop computer by replacing it with a new HP Windows 7 computer, and expect to be able to continue to use the printer, am simply changing cords to a 25 pin printer to USB cable.

If I do need to update the printer to use it with Windows 7, I would not hesitate to buy a newer version of this same Epson printer (this is version III and printers IV and V are currently available, as well).

I had purchased the Epson TM-T88III Receipt Printer in hope of being able to use the unit within my business. However, the unit did not come with any cables, or any type of software/drivers. I had down loaded the drivers and made numerous/numerous attempts to extract the drivers to get the receipt printer to be recognized within win 7, and to no end, wasn''t able too. I had returned the unit for a refund. I have a newer Epson Receipt model that came with the CD and the installation went perfectly. I think the product was still a good choice, but perhaps a better extraction of the drivers needs to be in place to ensure the install goes well.

There are no drivers for the Canon CD-200 for XP users. Here is a work-around.

Resize any .jpg image on your computer to less than 1 meg. Rotate the picture to landscape mode. Save the picture to a compact flash card. (The file size should be less than 400k).

Place the compact flash card into the CD-200 CF card slot and make sure that the button on the top of the printer is moved to the "CF Card" position. With the printer on, press the "Auto Print" switch.

This will also work with multiple images that are saved to the card, and will print every image, automatically.

It is not necessary to use a printer cable or monitor. just plug the printer into a power source.

Purchasing supplies for my inkjet printer was running up the $$$. Remembering the old days when we had the office Laserwriter, reminded me how many prints you could get on one cartridge.

We stopped by the local Office Max to see what was available. I thought I was in the market for a mono laser printer. The knowledgeable sales person showed us the 315. I asked him to print a couple of pages and was satisfied with the output. I would have purchased it on the spot, however they didn''t carry the 315W... and I wanted a wireless printer.

This gave me time to come home and check it out on the net. The reviews ran the gamete from "Great" to "Don''t buy". After consuming reviews till I was dizzy, I decided to place my order on Amazon. I had the printer in 3 days...all in good order.

After trying it out for a few days here is what i Have found out.

Negative reviews. I really don''t get this... Anyone who has been around laser printers knows that inkjet photos are far superior. I didn''t purchase this with great color printing in mind. I''ll use my Canon inkjet for that.

Set up for WiFi is very difficult. This I completely agree with. I have a Mac (long time user) and I finally had to give up and call Samsung.

Samsung tech support is worthless. I think they finally got tired of hearing this. I talked with a bright young fellow who nursed me thru the WiFi maze. Come to find out my cable has a dynamic IP and is always changing. He helped me switch it to a static IP. After that it worked perfect. Yes, he even knew all about the Apple Airport router. I would give wireless setup a try, then call before you blood pressure gets too high. It was a good experience.

After I got the printer going, I was able to connect my MacBook immediately.

Smell on start up... Yes it does, but by the next day it was gone.

Print quality poor. I don''t get this one. If you are printing monochrome, It''s as good as most laser printers. If you are printing a jpeg image that has black type in it... the image is seen as color and you get some haloing around the letters. Some documents are fine some are poor. I lay out my printed matter with this in mind and get great looking prints.

Toner... You can find pretty fair prices on the web. I''ve decided to give refilling a try. It doesn''t look to difficult. It sure beats the cost of replacing the cartridges. We''ll see what happens.

Instructions. Print out the PDF manual. Pretty good info there. The printed matter that comes in the box is next to useless.

There is plenty to be said on the plus side. How can you beat a color laser printer for $200?

I''m very satisfied with the quality of the printer and the looks of the printed page. Now let''s see how much the cost per page drops.

Having owned this printer for approximately three years (2011), it has always worked until the other day it simply "died" completely. The red light flashes, no print jobs go through. I contacted Samsung via Twitter for assistance and was referred to a local repair shop. Repair shop suggested it was the "main board...and sensors" that needed repair to the tune of $85-$95. Samsung Customer Service via Twitter was helpful but far from understanding. I was asked for the SN# and if I still had the receipt, I gave them all information except the receipt I no longer had....I was told no exceptions can be made, their decision was final, and there was nothing they could do. They were clearly less-than-enthusiastic about standing behind their product or offering to meet me half-way on a repair.

HP sells a comprable Laserjet for $199 MSRP (less on Amazon), it''s not worth paying 1/2 the price of a new one to get the old one repaired. I''ve owned several printers from both HP and Epson, Inkjet and Laser alike, and never had one just up and fail completely or so quickly. I was using an HP Laserjet at my last job that was approximately six years old and never skipped a beat. This printer was very lightly used, sometimes twice a week at most so I cannot say it was from heavy usage. (My inkjet gets more use, actually).

Anyway, I''m looking forward to getting my new Laserjet soon. There''s a neighborhood e-waste recycling fair coming up so this thing is getting dumped in a few days.

Print quality is pretty good, setup is quite easy, and it''s very quiet. It''s also a networkable printer (Ethernet and WiFi) so it was a no-brainer on which one to get.

The only "gripe" I have w/ this printer is the wireless setup--it is not very easy to do and the manual wasn''t as detailed as it should have been. Basically, the printer uses 802.11b/g to connect to your wireless base station.

The easiest way to setup the printer that I''ve found is to do the following...

Install the software (Mac or Windows)

Change the IP address to a static one on your network that is compatible w/ your router (ex. If your router is 192.168.1.1, then make the printer 192.168.1.2).

Set the gateway to point to the router(ex. 192.168.1.1).

Restart the printer, and you''re in business.

This was NOT how it was explained in the manual... it ended up taking longer following the instructions in the box, than it did to just do it myself. I''m no genius, but you can tell that the people who wrote the manual were not the people who were using it, or had done it so many times that they forgot a few steps.

Excellent printer, just tread lightly when setting up the network/wifi connection.

I bought this on 3 Dec through Amazon. Normal great delivery and packaging. Setup was ok although minimal instructions like other reviewers have said. Used a Cat5 cable to my router, logged in, changed the IP and pw, and no issues.

Had a bit of trouble with the paper cartridge didn''t realize it stuck out (no pictures indicated that) and it''s pretty cheap / thin plastic so I didn''t want to use too much oomph. But eventually figured it out and I''m comfortable with putting paper in and out (needed for double sided printing).

Just finished printing 120 Christmas letters with color pics embedded 2 pages, front and back, so about 450 pages total. And the black toner is hollering "low!" so I ordered another (supposedly 1.5k pages) from Amazon $43. Seems a bit soon to me, but there it is.

Cyan cartridge now needs "shaking" every 10 pages or so or it doesn''t fill in where it should and the "guage" is still showing 30% available.

In summary:

+ No inkjet nozzles to clean

+ More moisture resistant printout

= Decent color not inkjet quality (when they''re good), but good enough

= Noise is less than my other lasers

= Slowish network awareness 15/20 secs (and it''s 10'' from the router)

Low toner volumn imho

Toner replacements a bit pricey same as others, though

Instructions slim to none, although the included pdf manual is not bad

I''d look around, but might buy this one again if I were looking for the same features. Generally satisfied with reservation.

I really like my CLP-315W. I didn''t have any of the problems setting up the wireless network that others have mentioned ... I am operating Vista. I just installed the software, linked it to my wireless router, and I''ve been in business ever since.

One odd thing I''ve noticed that isn''t addressed anywhere in the manual or online: about every eight hours or so it emits a high-pitched electronic sound, a kind of whistling, that lasts about a minute or two, then stops. Weird. It''s not terribly loud but it will call your attention to it.

I love the small footprint, the elegance of the design, and the quality of the printing. It''s fast, once it warms up for the first time. I like being able to monitor the toner levels from right on my desktop. Like the first reviewer, I will wait to judge the consumption of the toner -one set of replacements costs about as much as the printer.

But when I think back to a $2000 tractor-feed daisy-wheel printer that sounded like a machine gun ... just fifteen years ago ... this little box that sits on my desk and wireless gives me perfect color-laser copies? It''s a bit of a miracle.

OK, don''t this long review scare you away this is a GREAT printer and a true bargain. The only hitch is the setup...

I knew from reviews online that setting up the wireless on this printer would not be easy. In fairness to Samsung, I''ve never seen a wireless printer yet that worked out of the box. But SHEEZ, the manual is next to useless, and Samsung''s phone support IS useless (they blamed it on my wireless router). Once you know how to do it, the wireless setup ain''t so bad. HERE''S HOW:

Hook up the Samsung via ethernet wire to your router. Turn it on and wait a couple of minutes so it can get assigned an IP address via DHCP, then install the software. Look at your wireless router''s setup screen to see what the printer''s IP address is. Now enter the printer''s IP address in your web browser, and the printer''s setup screen will appear. Change the printer''s IP address to a fixed address, then do the same on your router. You MUST use a fixed IP adress! Print a test page to make sure you are good so far.

Now go to the printer setup''s network setting\wireless menu. Oddly, the printer software couldn''t see my wireless router (which is 2 feet away!) with the "wizard", but could see my neighbor''s weak signal. IGNORE this and any "not connected" errors go to "custom" and manually enter in the SSID name of your wireless system, use the infrastructure setting, and apply. Unplug the ethernet cable, and you''re done. Print a test page to be sure. Install the software on every computer that will need to print to the Samsung.

I used no encryption, although it is supported (I''ve read the Samsung prefers the WPA variety). One more tip: my manual didn''t even say how to print a configuration page! Just hold down the big button (OK, the ONLY button!) on the Samsung for 10 seconds to print it. BTW, I use Macs, and it prints fine from OS 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6. The printer came right up in Bonjour when I went to add the printer on each Mac it couldn''t be easier. Setup should be about the same on Windows PCs, although probably not as easy as a Mac (like everything else!).

The Samsung printer works perfectly out of the box wired, and comes with the toner carts pre-installed. The carts are on the small side, I imagine they won''t last long if you print a lot. There''s no LCD or setup buttons on the printer, and you won''t need ''em. B&W print quality is great and quick. Color quality was pretty good too, despite what I''ve read elsewhere. There was that copier ozone smell the first night I used the Samsung, but it was gone after a day. The Samsung is also WAY smaller than the competition, and I love having a built-in power supply. I''m very VERY pleased with it overall.

The Xerox Phaser 3300MFP has delivered more than I expected at a very reasonable cost given the system''s capabilities.

1) Physical installation is a snap-just remove it from the carton, plug cables into the only places they fit, remove the tape that holds doors closed, insert the toner cartridge, unlock the scanner mechanism and it''s done. In our case we also added the second 250 sheet paper tray which equally simple.

2) Software installation on a Windows-7 Professional platform was limited to inserting the CD-ROM, telling it to use a network connected printer, and picking the printer from a displayed list.

3) Setting up the printers firmware uses the web interface which worked exactly as expected and offered no problems that an occational quick look into the on-line manual failed to cure.

4) EVERY feature worked as documented, including scan to Email, scan to Network, and FAX forward to Email.

The web interface can be a bit difficult for people with little or no ability to actually read and follow instructions. But if you open the manual in one browser window and the machine''s web interface in another and then accept that Xerox knows more about their machine than you do... it all works fine.

Some features are especially nice. One very useful one is that it you can put a stack of pages in the feeder and then scan them directly to a folder on your computer in one of several formats. Another useful feature, especially for small business types, is that incoming faxes can be set to automatically forward to your email as a PDF file. This is great because if an order or contract is sent by fax you can get it on your Blackberry or iPhone when away from the office.

The only "fault" I have with it is the machine''s control panel. It uses a telephone keypad for all data input which makes things like entering Email addresses and mixed-case passwords sluggish. Perhaps Xerox will put a better human interface on the next generation.

Otherwise... a very good product that demonstrates good value.

I had been buying the Xerox Phaser 3200MFP/N Multi-Function Network Printer/Fax/Scanner/Email for branch offices I support but was very disappointed in the quality and cost per page. So when Xerox came out with the 3300 MFP I was interested in seeing how it compared.

While the part number maybe close, the machines are completely different. The 3300 MFP is more rugged, with a real paper tray (optional add on paper trays available), a lower cost per page, and better paper handling. It offers all of the features you would expect on a modern laser, scan to e-mail, network scanning, printing, and faxing. I have purchased 5 of these so far (now 10). The initial firmware these some of the units shipped with was buggy and as noted by another reviewer the Web user interface (UI) did not work in IE and other browsers. However, Xerox soon corrected that problem with a significant firmware update that corrected the UI and even required new drivers on the work stations.

Setup and administration was very strait forward via the Web interface (nearly identical to any other Xerox copier). You can import address books for fax and e-mail, and tweak all of the default settings. I have had no complaints from the users and with 9+ (now 14+) months of usage under there belt, these printers continue to perform well.

Other vendors may have similar products, but one area Xerox has really shined is there onsite technical support. While no of my 3300''s have required onsite services, Xerox has always come through for me on other units I have installed. (The onsite warranty is an optional add on.) (I have had one ADF feeder that had some problems jamming but they were quick to repair it)

So where does this unit come short? It does not support SSL for SMTP which means if you use Gmail or some other vendor that requires SSL for SMTP you are going to have trouble. One work around to this is setting up a computer running STUNNEL () a free open source project that you can use to proxy through. The other feature lacking is LDAP support for a centralize e-mail address list. The only other "weakness" it has is a limited darken/lighten range when making copies. It has this feature but it does not have the same range that a full blown copier has.

Bottom line if you are looking for a solid, cost effective, multifunction unit, in my opinion, this is it. (Revised this review because it does support duplexing which I had incorrectly stated it did not. My review is other wise still the same after more than a year of usage.)

The print and scan quality are good. Interface and usability are bad. This device gets a one star rating because it does not do what it advertises it can do. Network scanning is only available via PC (not much of a surprise) although they don''t tell you that when you buy the thing. It also claims that it can scan to email over the network. It really can''t, not if your email server requires SSL, like 90% of email servers do. Duh! None of these limitations are listed anywhere, and the only way to discover that the scan to email doesn''t work with SSL is to call tier 2 technical support to discover it. If you buy it and can''t get it to work within a week, it isn''t you. The machine doesn''t work. Rather, I should say that it does not work as advertised, hence the one star rating.

I''ve only spent about 6 hours with my new xerox phaser 3300 mfp and I''m very disappointed. It has a web page that is built into the machine. I have no trouble accessing it, but it is not compatible with any web browsers. I''ve tried FireFox and IE8 on a XP machine and FireFox and Safari on a mac. The navigation buttons disappears after you switch pages and the images don''t load until you hold your pointer over them. It is just flaky as can be. Then, to make things worse, when I do attempt to change a setting, I get an "error on page" warning in IE8. So, I can''t change settings.

The manual is also full of errors. It is like it was written for a different machine and pasted into this machines manual and not fully updated to be accurate with this machine. It tells me to go to areas in the browser accessible control panel that simply don''t exist. If Xerox reads this, look how it tells you to set SMTP in the browser based interface and then look at the reality of where the SMTP settings are.

I called Xerox and he confirmed the errors in the instructions and confirmed that it isn''t compatible with hardly any "new" browsers. He said it worked with a lot of outdated versions of popular browsers. He had me download OPERA rather than reverting to an older version of IE. Now it works fine, but I still have to figure it out without much help from the manual as it is not written with any degree of accuracy.

We would highly recommend all the Phaser Printers. We own 6 printers (all are color except this one). We use this as a back up printer and mainly as a fax machine.

The solid ink printers are unreal in the quality of print. The laser printers are good too. Supplies are pricey though! We also would recommend that you only buy OEM parts. We ruined 2 printers by buying supplies that were not XEROX. You may find it cheaper to keep buying a new printer versus the supplies too?

This is the newer version of the MFC-8860 from Brother, and is a step up from the MFC-8480 as the 8890 provides full duplexing on scanning, copying, and faxing. The MFC-8480 only provides duplex on printing.

I have Macs--several of them--so I''ve been looking around for a while for a multi-function laser machine I could use for printing, scanning, copying, and the occasional fax. I''m thoroughly impressed with this machine so far, and following the install from CD, everything just plain worked. The printer driver was installed, it included a fax option right in the driver itself (on one of the print option tabs), and so was the TWAIN driver for scanning, and so was their ControlCenter software, which provides access to all the settings for the printer, documentation, and a bunch of customizable presets for the different functions of the printer (most useful for scanning different kinds of documents to different apps on the Mac, including an OCR capability).

The duplex is great--the auto-document feeder reads both sides of documents for copying, scanning, and even faxing. Most less expensive models (like the 8480 and a Canon MF4370 I recently tested) will only duplex on printing, but the 8890 will both read and produce 2-sided docs for any function.

Network capabilities for Macs is also top-notch, with both wired and wireless network capabilities, you can use every function of the machine over the network, with seemingly quick transfer rates, even high-res color scanning. By the way, my previous favorite printer vendor, Canon, does not support network scanning to Macs on ANY of their multi-function printers, but this is not apparent until you buy one and try to do it--their support has since told me this is true. I think the only thing the Brother 8890 doesn''t do via network to a Mac is faxing--it supports some kind of Windows fax server that Apple has no equivalent of. But since you can simply scan a document and have it sent to your Mac over the network instead, I hardly care.

So, if you want a fully network-capable machine that works with Macs, this is your machine. The 8480 is a bit less expensive, but does not fully support duplexing, for those with simpler office needs.

I bought this when I opened my own law practice. I have a small real estate law practice, but I do go through a lot of printing and copying, and this machine has been reliable. I use it with my laptop and wifi. I bought the extra tray for legal size paper, which was pretty easy to install (although you have to lift up the whole printer and set it down just right on top of the 2nd tray, kind of a delicate and tricky operation) and it reliably chooses the right size paper automatically.

The good: it has been reliable. I''ve had no major jams or breakdowns in a year and a half of use. I can print 100 pages or more at a time, several times a month. It is my only printer/copier/fax/scanner, and when I''ve got clients waiting on me to print/copy things, it is good to know I can rely on it.

The mediocre: maybe this is just how my IT guy set it up, but it''s not great for scanning. It scans each page as a separate image doc, so I really can''t use it for scanning docs more than a few pages. Some people also can''t open the image attachment. I also can''t get it to scan legal size, so I have to copy and reduce to letter size before scanning. Maybe it scans legal just fine and I haven''t fully read the instructions, but at least scanning legal size is not "user friendly", because I haven''t been able to do it yet. I stress again though that it''s possible this is a problem with my setup or just "user error."

The bad: It will not duplex copy on legal size. What the heck? If I have front and back on legal size, I have to run the front, flip the whole doc over and run the back, and then sort through and put the copy pages together. Also, I really have to "babysit" the machine when printing or copying a large volume. In both the originals receiving tray on top, and the copy receiving tray underneath, even when you flip out the extra "tongues", which are meant to keep papers in place, it still sometimes begins to push documents out onto the floor. Even worse, I have had copies get pushed out onto the bypass tray and actually get sucked back into the bypass intake, causing it to print on top of the copy and then jam. Not cool. I''ve come in to work one morning after someone sent me a large fax, and found various pages of the fax scattered all over the floor.

Needless to say this is all a big pain. For large volume printing and copying, you have to keep watch over it, and when it starts to push pages out, you kind of have to shove them back in so they don''t get out of order, fall onto the floor, or get sucked into the bypass tray.

However, I''ve worked in other firms with the really fancy, high volume printers, and they have plenty of their own issues with jamming, etc. Quite the contrary, with this machine repair and toner replacement have been very easy. I''ve had virtually no "mysterious" jamming or repair issues like the big expensive machines have all the time. when there is a jam or toner needs replacing, the machine is pretty simple, so unjamming and toner replacement have been very easy.

So, bottom line, for the price I would recommend this printer. It''s reliable and a good value.

I would also definitely recommend the high volume toner. I''ve been getting it on amazon, which is a lot cheaper than buying it in the office supply stores.

This is my 3rd or 4th All-in-One from Brother. I''ve always had good luck with the brand and so far this one is no different. Worked great out of the box, although setting up the wireless LAN wasn''t exactly simple. But even I, a non-techy, got it to work after an hour or so of tinkering. Plus I got the incoming FAX setup to work well with my 2-line remote-handset phone with built-in answering machine (always a nail-biter).

Regarding the envelope wrinkling problem, just follow the instructions of another reviewer that posted here (thank you!); open the back door, and push down on the two levers marked with the envelope symbol. I now run my machine with those levers down 100% of the time with no issues whatsoever. Prints well on plain paper, labels and envelopes. The scanner works well for business documents and the duplexing option is really very cool. I don''t use the Fax very much, but incoming faxes are working just fine.

I was shopping around for all-in-one printer, to replace an old HP DeskJet 6127 Color Printer inkjet printer and an even older HP LaserJet 6p. I wanted an all-in-one with fax, print, copy, scan and built-in duplex with networking support for scan to PC and fax from PC. For some reason, the HP inkjet AIO printers do not support faxing from the PC (their laser printers do, but not the inkjet printers). They also are pretty horribly reviewed. So, even though I generally love HP printers, they were ruled out.

After a lot of research, I selected the Epson Artisan 810 All-In-One Printer. Set it up, connected it, and started doing some test prints. The quality was pretty awful compared to my ancient HP Deskjet, using the same paper. We decided to send it back, because we just couldn''t put up with that bad text and dim image quality.

After some more thinking, I decided to keep the old inkjet for my color printing needs, and get a black & white laser multifunction printer. The Brother MFC-8890DW fit the bill, at a not unreasonable price. I was able to read all of the manuals at the Brother website and be certain that it could do everything I wanted. We especially liked the ability to copy, scan and fax from double-sided originals via the automatic document feeder a lot of duplex devices only support duplex for output, not input. Additionally, the ability to work with legal-sized media was a bonus, as I''m going to law school next fall.

When the device arrive, I noticed a very nice, thoughtful thing Brother had done. When you open the boxes of most components, there are little diagrams telling you how to unpack the device. Brother, on the other hand, included instructions on how to re-pack the device. Since we tend to keep packing materials and reuse them when we move, this was a very nice touch.

The setup instructions were very clear, with step-by-step instructions for USB, parallel, wired and wireless networking setup split out, as well as Windows and MacOS software installations split out. There are also detailed instructions on setting up your fax line, depending on what other devices you have on that phone line and other things like distinctive-ring. Setting up the device was absolutely trivial everything worked exactly as shown in the manual. The most complicated part of the setup was keying in my WPA-PSK code, which uses a mix of upperand lower-case letters and symbols. Input is via a form of multi-tap input, which is probably trivial for texting young folk, but I prefer alphanumeric keypads. But it worked right the first time.

Software installation on Windows XP SP3 was also straightforward. The CD that comes with the device has support up to Vista, but there are Windows 7 drivers and a complete software package on the Brother website. The Brother Status Monitor application started up and asked if I wanted to monitor for firmware updates, which I did. It immediately found an update and took me to the Brother support site to download it. Installing the update went completely smoothly. The device beeps a lot while the update is in progress, but that''s the only annoyance.

Another nice thing Brother does is to support testing your fax configuration by faxing back your registration form. After you fax it to them, you will receive a fax confirmation back from them. No need to go bother a friend to test your fax. Nice touch.

The printer is blazingly fast, even with duplex printing. The quality is quite good, but not the very best I''ve ever seen. There''s a HQ 1200dpi mode available, which shows marked improvement on printed images. I''ve use dedicated HP laser printers for the last couple of decades, and they have better print quality. But the Brother''s output is excellent.

Every feature I''ve tested works perfectly print, copy, fax, scan, fax from PC, scan to PC, etc. We''re using this at home, but it has a lot of features that are useful for a small office, including various network, security and remote management features.

This is an all-around excellent device, an absolute bargain. I give it my unqualified recommendation.

I have been using this multi-function printer for about a week and am thoroughly impressed. As previous reviewers have noted, this is a great choice for a Mac environment. I was able to easily set up the wireless function for the computers in our small office and it is very convenient as we have one main iMac and several Macbook users as well. It worked fine with both our older and new computers.

The printer has all the features I could want. We are considering using it for a lot of scanning and I love that it can scan things that are double sided. My test scans were of good quality and worked fine in the ADF. Print quality has been very good--so good in fact that I will likely now do many of our simple b/w brochures in house (they looked better on the Brother than what I get back from the our local copy shop).

The other thing I love is how much more streamlined the machine is than our previous multi-function (Canon). The footprint is fairly small and the sides are streamlined so that I can fit other office equipment right next to it. Almost all the functions go through the front or the top, so it doesn''t take up much space on the sides.

I did have trouble with crumpled envelopes but I just tested out the trick mentioned in a previous review and that took care of it! So my only small complaint is that I didn''t find that info anywhere obvious in the manual.

I printed up a batch of these on my monochrome laser printer. They print nicely with no curling, and are easy to apply to the bottles. The on-line Avery template worked very well for composing my labels. On the downside, I was disappointed to see that, although they may be water resistant, they still smear if you''re not very, very careful. Since smoothing down the label is an obvious part of applying it, I ended up with visible smearing on several of my batch.
