HP Color LaserJet 3550 Printer

HP Color LaserJet 3550 Printer
  • 600 x 600 dpi resolution, HP ImageREt 2,400 dpi effective resolution
  • Up to 16 ppm print speed, first page in 22 seconds
  • 64 MB built-in RAM; 350-sheet input capacity, expandable to 850 sheets
  • Automatic media type sensing and print mode adjustment
  • USB 2.0 interface, optional wireless networking; PC and Mac compatible

I looked at all of the laser printers and inkjet. Every article says there is nothing like an inkjet. I can tell you for a fact that they are wrong!! There is no comparison at all when printed on plain paper; this HP LaserJet 3550 is the best!! When printed on gloss paper a great inkjet is better but not by much at all. Meaning you will not need an inkjet unless you already have one. I read all the articles on all brands (OKI, Samsung, HP, Lexmark, Brother, Ricoh, Minolta, Panasonic, etc...) (trust me I spent 2+ weeks reading) of laser printers. I sent (and paid) for samples only to find out that the HP LaserJet printers (3500, 3550, 3700) produce the best output (B&W, color, and photo) and they only have 600*600 res., which goes to show you resolution means nothing (at least with HP)!!

This HP 3550 printer is fast and produced the best photos I have seen on any laser printer (no banding also!). Power consumption is low, it is Quiet for a laser, and of course it is bigger than an inkjet or a cheap (slow) color laser (that is why it is FAST) (they do sell cheaper, smaller, slower models). Trust me it is not that big in size (at least for what it does). HP does not put in half toner cartridges like others (Minolta, etc...). The only thing it could have is a duplex option, but it does a great job a manual duplex. I just can not say anything bad, I was very hesitant about buying a color laser but am very happy with this and am glad I did not go with any of the other brands (especially after getting in my samples of other printers) you will not regret this purchase!!!!! I have the LaserJet 3550n.

I have the HP Color Laserjet 3550. Straight off the bat let me state that this printer is big. When I say big, I mean big. When it was delivered I was astonished at the size of the box and after unpacking it I spend a few minutes taking in its size. I then realized that it was taller than I anticipated, even though the dimensions quoted in my prepurchase research were accurate. Seeing is believing. Despite the size, it is well designed and infact, beautifully made.

Setup of the printer and toners was extremely easy, and the installation of drivers was okay. After following the instructions given in the setup guide, the installation process stopped on my PC for no apparent reason. I eventually restarted the pc with the setup cd in the machine AND the printer connected to the pc and everything sorted itself out perfectly.

When I did my first print (the printer''s demo page) and saw the quality on plain copy paper, I knew that I had made the right decision on purchasing the HP LaserJet 3550. So far, I am extremely pleased with this printer. I run a home-based desktop publishing business, and this printer has handled everything I have thrown at it without problems business cards, labels, flyers, invoices, etc. As DonF said in his review, you will not regret this purchase!!!!!

I was pleasantly surprised with this color laserjet. I previously had the HP 4550, which was (is) the most disappointing color laser printers (at 4ppm and outrageously expensive ink drum). I was a little skeptical about the capabilities of the 3550, but with a little research online and testing at local computer stores, I decided to go with the 3500 (actually, I got the 3550n with networking). It did not come with a network card (like the 4550), but it did come with a USB network print server (which I like better anyway).

It boasts 16ppm for color (which is faster than my old one), but only 16ppm for b&w text (which is slow compared to my HPLJ 2420 at 25ppm). Others boast a fast 25ppm color and b&w text (Lexmark C762) but for twice the price. The comparable Lexmark unit is the C510, which prints 30ppm text, but a slow 8ppm color. This is why I went for the HP.

I will have to say that my inkjet printers (HP and Epson) can print better photo-quality than this printer, but that is a given. The 3550 was not designed to print on photo paper.

I purchased the 3550 about 6 months ago for over $1K, but I think you can get it for about $800 nowadays.

Summary: Text printing is fine (but slow), and color printer is fast (but crummy). I''ve had some people either like or hate the printer for its capabilities, but everyone unanimously agreed it is a monster size. So, if you have the space, I highly recommend this color laserjet printer.

Pros:

-excellent text quality

-very fast color printer (though not the fastest, but can hold its own against lexmark)

-easy to use; html toolbox user interface

Cons:

-HUGE footprint; I had to get a separate printer table for it because it would have taken up my work desk

-relatively slow all-text printing

-manual duplexing (similar to my HP Laserjet 2420)

-some issues with the color graphics; though good enough for home printing, I would not use it for business printing

I absolutely love this printer! Yes, it is big, but it is a work horse. As a business teacher, I print a lot of documents from a variety of applications. I have been using the printer heavily for the past month since the start of school and it has not jammed once!! I''ve printed labels, card stock, and used the manual duplex feature as well. I also love the HP software that activates as I attempt to use various features. It took me about one hour to have everything up and running smoothly when it arrived. I''ve read some reviews that indicate that printing is slow. Compared to the inkjet Lexmark that I had before, this printer is a dream. I highly recommend it for home use.

Well, maybe buy if all you are doing is printing from Office. This printer uses a host based driver that doesn''t work well with non-Office products. I am trying to print from a financial program and it won''t work. I contacted HP and was told politely "too bad". With host based drives, if it doesn''t work, you''re just stuck.

If you need it to be HP make sure it doesn''t have a host based driver. The HP tech recommended a refurbed 2550 otherwise you''ll have to go with the large printers starting with the 4700 series. One last time stay away from anything with host based drivers.

You''d think Kodak paper would work in a new Kodak copier! The Kodak copier itself is FANTASTIC with the better quality papers. But this plain photo paper always gets stuck in the printer. When you feel the page, it''s all sticky. I called Kodak''s customer service. He said, "Feel the page. Is it sticky? Then that''s the problem." Yeah, right. I already knew that. He hinted that it was a bad batch. Maybe yes, maybe no. But it seems from Reviews that I''m not the first person to have this problem.

It''s not thick enough like regular photo prints you would get from a store. I would recommend spending some more money and getting good paper if you really want quality photographs.

Want Kodak Matte Photo Paper (8318164) Discount?

I was expecting a paper that had a really *really* light satin finish, some sort of surfacing, anyway. All I got was a pack of overpriced cardstock. The only thing going for this paper is that the blacks really print out *black* and that it dries fast. I was expecting more, though, from a pack that calls itself photo paper.

If you are looking to use this paper to print photos like I was, then I would not recommend it. This is just like regular printer paper. The only difference is that on the back of each page it says Kodak, otherwise it is just as thin as plain printer paper. You could get regular white card stock which is much thicker for much cheaper. Overall I would not recommend this paper. It''s just overpriced printer paper.

  • Wireless (802.11b/g) and Ethernet network interfaces
  • USB Direct Interface
  • High-quality output at up to 600 x 2400 dpi
  • Adjustable 250-sheet capacity paper tray

I have been a happy owner of a brother laser printer for almost 10 years and finally decided to upgrade to a color laser. The HL3075CW didn''t dissapoint. Setup was fast and easy on both my PC desktop and my Mac laptop (I love the wireless networking!!!). Color quality is good. It prints nice, rich colors. However, it is not a photo printer, so photos come out a bit grainy, but still nice enough. I use the printer for business and it has met all my needs/expectations. It has a reasonable warm-up time, and is fast with printing both color and b/w. My only complaint so far is that it ships with toner cartridges that are only half-filled. Expect about 1,000 pages of printing before you start getting the low toner warnings. Luckily, toner replacement prices are reasonable (when compared to other brands) and you can get a lot more than 1,000 prints with the filled replacement cartridges.

I have now been using the 3075CW for about two months in an office environment. I believe the quality for a color laser (actually LED) printer is quite good. I have used it to print tri-fold color brosures that contain photographs and find that it is quite acceptable. It is not a photo printer nor does it claim to be. It used to take me all day to print 25 tri-folds on a high quality inkjet, it now takes about 3 minutes using this machine. I would recommend the printer to anyone who needs occasional color in an office or home environment.

This is our 5th Brother printer, scanner or label maker. This one tends to eat toner like a pig. The product was very easy to setup. The warm up time is somewhat slow and certain jobs take an extensive time to print. The quality is good, both color and black. The footprint is ok, it could be smaller, but not a big concern. Would have give another star except for the toner use and the warm up time.

I am a big fan of Brother printers they are a quality product that you can depend on. This printer is no different. I have found so far that it is hard working and durable. It also prints well with accurate colors. I do not print a high quantity of materials, so I cannot comment on that. The ink cartridges are easy to deal with. The paper is easy to load. The one thing that I was surprised to find out with this printer is the fact that you have to make sure that it is placed well so that you can easily access the front and the back of the printer. I do print a lot of labels and envelopes and to do so, you have to access a door that is in the very back of the printer. If you have a place to put this printer where there is room around it to work with these things (if you be print on more than just plain paper) then I believe you will be happy with it.

I decided to try a Brother color laser printer because of the expense of printing on my hp color laser and bought the hl-3075cw. The setup was easy and I had no problem printing in B&W. Then I printed out a color brochure that I had printed on my old hp color laser. The color was terrible. It was obvious to me that there was too much black in the mix -or too much of a variety of colors that would tend to shade colors and dull them down. There was plenty of ink laid down on the paper, so that''s not the problem. Changing to vibrant didn''t help.

I sent the file off to a friend who printed it out on his ancient hp color laser. The colors were fine. I tried printing from 2 other computers that were on my network: same problem. So, assuming it was a problem with this unit, I went back to the store and exchanged it for another one -same model. Same problem.

I called Brother for help, and they were wonderful, both at the initial level and at level 5. They patiently tried every adjustment they could think of and decided that there was nothing to fix the problem. They had spent close to 2 hours all together with me. I decided to search on the internet for information on bad color for Brother laser printers. It seems to be a problem with other models as well. That''s really a shame. I like the printer, the speed, the easy set-up the size and the fact that you can replace toner without having to replace the rolly thingy (sorry, forgot what it''s called). That''s a saving in cost and waste.

With so much going for it, plus the friendly and patient product support, it''s a shame that Brother doesn''t work on the color accuracy. After all, color is the whole point of a color printer. I understand that laser printers aren''t intended for photos, but brochures are their meat and potatoes.

All the work that I do is volunteer. But I don''t like to waste my time making anything that doesn''t look good. If the problem were minor, I would keep the printer. But the colors (light colors, that is) are so grayed that they look depressing. So this printer is going back and I''ll just bite the bullet and buy new toner for my old HP.

Post-it Super Sticky Removable Full Sheet Labels, 8.5 x 11 Inches, White, 25 per Pack
  • Post-it Super Sticky Removable Identification Labels stick securely and remove cleanly
  • Great for binders, shelves, containers and much more
  • Write labels by hand or print with laser and inkjet printers
  • For use with popular software packages and templates

These full size removable adhesive sheets are wonderful with so many uses. I highly recommend them for crafters and everyday household use!

I am a crafter, so use these for masking parts of my project that I don''t want to be inked. I simply diecut or handcut the shape, place it over the image, stamp, then remove. It doesn''t leave any residue, stays put, but then is very easy to peel off.

They would also work great as removable labels for a variety of household items, including drawers, tools, etc. You could even trim these and use these as gift tags to stick to presents; they stay put, but then remove easily so then you can reuse the packaging!

I definitely recommend getting the full size sheet so you can trim them to any size you want. Much cheaper than buying a bunch of different sized labels. There are so many possibilities! Love them!

These full-page sheets of white Post-It are quite handy, and stick/unstick just like any other Post-Its. I was a little surprised how thin the paper is: I use them to temporarily cover things for photos etc, and I have to use double sheets to effectively cover up dark text. I used to use some old easel-size Post-It sheets and they were much thicker, but I can''t find a source for them any more.

HP 1100DTN Business Inkjet Printer

HP 1100DTN Business Inkjet Printer
  • Up to 23 pages per minute black, 20 pages per minute color
  • Up to 4,800 dpi optimized color; automatic double-sided printing
  • Modular HP ink cartridges and print heads for cost-effective high-quality
  • Network-capable for small workgroups using optional print servers
  • PC and Macintosh compatible

My volume of printing has increased recently and I needed to purchase a printer which was more cost efficient. After shopping for months, I came across an excellent review of the costs of printing in PC mag. They reported the cost of the HP 1100 to be similar to laser printers and I was skeptical. HP has achieved this efficiency by placing the print heads separate from the ink and having four ink cartridges, yellow, magenta, cyan and black. You only replace what you use and you don''t have to replace the print heads with every ink. I didn''t want to buy a laser printer because of the warm up time and because I print pictures. This printer prints standard quality very quickly, but it does spool up longer than other inkjet printers I have owned. The duplex feature saves paper by printing on two sides automatically; however, printing time goes up because the printer needs to wait for the ink to dry before printing the second side. This printer is on my home network with three computers and Windows XP and 98 and I have had no problems yet. Setup was faultless, although lengthy. My relatives have invested in other brands of printers and although the print quality is fine they have spent endless hours troubleshooting. Except for the usual Windows type frustrations (while slogging through system upgrades, switching to networking, switching to USB, hard-drive crashes, cable changes and driver updates) my other HP inkjet printers have performed as advertised and even performed well on systems they were not designed for. While this printer is much more substantial than my other new inkjet printers, many parts are only plastic and I''m afraid it will not last under hard use. This printer would probably be fine for heavy home use or sharing in light business use but probably too light weight for higher volume types of printing such as newsletters and brochure production.

So far I am happy with this printer. I have had another HP for 5+ years and it still works just thought it was time to upgrade to a faster printer (not to mention I now have two networked computers and was cumbersome to keep changing cables to print). Just a copule of small things I have notice: takes 45+ sec from off state to print first page, I have yet to see the print cartridges sold in local stores (Office Depot, Office Max, WalMart), print head and ink are now seperate (supposed to make ink replacement cheaper in long run), in XP (home? which is what I use) do not enable ICF on the ethernet connection or you will not be able to print (not a big deal in most networks with a firewall built into the hub or router unless you take your laptop away from home often).

Read Best Reviews of HP 1100DTN Business Inkjet Printer Here

I installed this printer in a mixed (Windows/Linux) network in a SOHO. Setup was a drawn out affair, but the printer itself worked fine once I finished putting it together. The Windows driver install had trouble with automatic discovery of the printer. Using the "test" button on the print server (not documented in the quick setup, unfortunately) and entering the address by hand worked. Printing from Linux worked "out of the box" for recent versions of Linux. This is despite HP''s statement that Linux isn''t supported. If you''re running an older version of Linux, you may need to get a PPD file for the printer (linuxprinting.org).

Print quality is better than I expected, considering some of the reviews I''ve seen. The printer is not blazingly fast, but it''s considerably faster than the printer it replaced here (an HP 970CSE). I haven''t seen any paper handling problems. Even double-sided printing on 24lb paper (a problem with earlier HP printers) works reliably.

My only complaints about this printer are physical. It''s big for a SOHO printer. Right now it''s hulking over in the corner. It''s also unusually ugly for an HP product. Finally, it''s fairly noisy while printing (it''s dead silent when idle). But it works reliably and it''s considerably cheaper than any of the alternatives I examined. Nothing else provided networking, duplex printing, higher capacity paper trays and individual ink cartridges at anything approaching this price.

One final note: I''m told that this printer has been discontinued by HP. It looks like the replacement will be the HP 1200dtn Business Inkjet Printer. It has more memory, a slightly faster engine, and is otherwise feature comparable with the 1100dtn, so perhaps it will be a better bet once it''s available.

We''ve used this at our small business office since November.

I don''t think I''ve ever hated a printer as much.

Although it is pricey, it is way slow. Maybe 40s per page and 10-20s to turn over the page to print the other side. You read that right if we get more than a page a minute out we are doing good. The only way to get acceptable speed is to go to draft mode and turn off double sided printing. Not what you expect in a $300 printer.

The other thing we hate about it is that the cartridges are now coded so that remanufactured cartridges won''t work. (It works by expiration date a cartridge old enough to have been used up and re-filled gets rejected by the printer. I wonder what happens if you are unfortunate enough to buy a new cartridge that has been stockpiled somewhere.)

Overall, I have to believe there are better choices. Of our three printers, I only use this one when I really want double-sided.

HP PSC 1410 All-in-One Printer (Q7290A#ABA)

HP PSC 1410 All-in-One Printer

  • Up to 1,200-optimized dpi color copying from 600 x 1,200 dpi scans
  • 8.5-by-11-inch flatbed scan/copy surface
  • 100-sheet drop-down paper tray
  • USB interface; PC and Mac compatible

For eighty bucks, this little 1410 is a deal. Print speed and quality are both good very for the price, and the scanner is surprisingly good. The unit is compact enough to fit on a shelf beside my desk, and it operates quietly, too.

Some here have complained about the 1410''s ink cartridges being small and short-lived. To that I say anyone who prints in volume will find an inkjet printer isn''t going to be the most economical choice. In my experience, I''ve found the 1410''s ink to last a reasonable time, and the cartridges are less expensive than those required by two other printers I have.

Yes, the software does take forever to install, but it''s very easy to do, and here''s a tip. On the HP support website, a "basic" version of the software is available (drivers and controls, without the image editing and other fluff). It still isn''t speedy to install, but is faster than the disk that comes with the printer. The downside of any multifunction machine from any manufacturer is that the software that comes with it tends to be quite bloated.

Pay more money, and you''ll get more speed, better print quality, and lower printing cost-per-page maybe, but the 1410 has been just about perfect for my purposes, and didn''t cost me much in the process. It has been reliable so far, I get good print and scan results with it, and I recommend it highly.

I am priting only about 40 cards (on both sides) yet i used up the ink cartridges in one sitting. I didn''t even finish rinting them. At over twenty dollar each. It''s not a cheap printer to use. This is not a top of the line product, but for the 70-ish dollars it goes for, what do you expect? Most home users that I deal with typically print less than 20 sheets per month; for people like that, this is OK. If a ream (500) sheets of paper last you all year, ink cost generally isn''t a major concern.

The machine has decent everything, but is really good at nothing. The text is readable, the photos are serviceable, the scans are OK (espically at text) but not great. There''s really not too much to say about it; for the extremely light user, who does *not* need a fax, it''s acceptable, particularly at this price point.

If you actually use your printer a lot though, then don''t buy it; get a heavier duty model (the 6000 or 7000 lines, maybe).

Barring some truly bottom of the barrel printers, this is about as cheap as you can get a worthwhile multi-function. The tradeoffs are the lack of an auto-doc feeder and a fax, as well as a high ink cost. If you actually print more than 20-30 sheets a month, get a beefier printer; this is NOT for college students, small businesses, or what have you. It''s for people who occasionally want to scan something into thier machine, and print of the Christmas letters every year, and copy forms once in a while. If that''s what you need, this will suffice, but not excel--but if that''s all you do, that''s good enough. Don''t get tricked into buying a machine that cost more than you need if you use your printer once a month for a few sheets--but at the same time, if you print daily, don''t try to get by on this, the ink will eat you alive.

OK, I agree with some of the posters here. The install was very easy, but very long. I did the full install which was over 800 MB and it took quite a while. I wasn''t happy about that, but you only have to do it once so I guess it''s OK and you have the option to do a smaller install which would be quicker I suppose.

The cartridges are HP 21 and 22. They are hard to find and they are small. Only 5ml. The price at walmart where I bought the printer was 14.92 for the black and 17.92 for the tricolor. That''s half the price I paid for my other cartridges in my last HP printer, but also less than half the ink. I did a search though and you can find some remanufactured OEM cartridges for around 10 and 14 dollars respectively. That''s a little better.

But as a previous poster said, it seems as if the manufacturers haven''t caught up yet or something because they are hard to find.

That being said. This printer is actually a great little printer. I paid 49.88 for it. I needed a new printer and scanner because I recently moved and unfortunately left my HP photosmart and seperate scanner behind. If I had the money I would have replaced them with the same thing I had, but I couldn''t afford it so I thought I would give this all in one unit a try.

I do alot of photos and wanted a printer that would print them out nicely and a nice scanner to get my 35s on the PC. I didn''t expect this machine to be perfect. It''s not a photo printer, but it still does a nice job even on plain paper. If you use photo paper it''s pretty darn good. It''s certainly good enough for what I need at home and having used the photosmart printers almost exclusively for the last 6 years or so that''s pretty good coming from me.

As far as I''m concerned it printed pretty fast. The one I had before prints amazing photos, but it''s pretty slow and it''s even slow when printing out text. This printer printed very fast in comparison. I can never really understand the people who complain that something is slow. If it takes 15 seconds or 30 seconds, what''s the big deal? Unless you do a super amount of printing and in that case why would you be buying a 50 dollar printer? But anyhow, I thought it was fast.

The scanner scanned the few test items I tried better than the stand alone scanner I had before and I paid alot of money for that scanner, so I am happy with that.

As for making copies. It worked perfectly and fast. One button copying. Just like a real one.

I bought this printer with the expectation that I would be bringing it back for something else, but after using it all day today and testing it out on various things, photos, christmas cards, copies and various text documents, I''ve decided I''ll keep it.

For the price it works like a dream. I only give it four stars because of the ink cartridges. Everything else is wonderful and I recommend it to anyone who''s thinking about it.

Bought this to print out copies of my handout to students. Had them in a 3-ring binder but they would tear out over time.

This paper has a reinforced edge to prevent that.

Price online was about half that at the local store.

I''m a happy customer.

92 bright in the headline, 88 bright in the "product description", and 87 bright later in the text. I guess they can''t make up their minds. I ordered 1,000 sheets, and it fit my purposes perfectly, and was 92 bright according to the package. I think the description should be more accurate.

Item received is as described.... blank 8.5x11 legal sized paper, three-hole punched and the holes are reinforced with a clear mylar (?) strip on one side of the paper.

This is a Xerox commercial use product, 92-bright, 20 pound legal size paper, and it goes through my HP printers without any jams it can be mixed with un-punched copy paper in the printer paper tray without jamming.

NOTE Xerox recommends that you print on the side of the paper with the mylar clear strip FIRST, before printing on the reverse side.

This product is incorrectly described in the Amazon write up. The full Xerox noun nomenclature and description for this product is BUSINESS 4200 RING TUFF, 92 BRIGHT, 8.5x11 INCHES, 20 POUND, 500 SHEETS, THREE-HOLE DRILLED, MFR# 3R4299.

Specialty papers for a printer.... think Xerox.

I bought this paper not knowing it was reinforced on the edges so it won''t tear out. I love it, it is well worth the money. I''ve been looking for this in local stores and can''t find it. Excellent paper.

I have used this paper very successfully with Epson R260 and Epson R280 printers. When used with Epson ink the photo life seems to be very good and the print quality is also good. I use Epson Velvet Fine Art Paper for professional prints with the Epson R1900 and I use this paper for snap shots and professional proofs. Don''t be fooled by the four star rating as it performs like a five star product or at least that has been my experience.

I like this particular paper for affordable, decent quality, prints, to give out as gifts. While it is apparent, both from the moment you take the paper out of the package to when you view the prints, that the final printed images would not be considered ''archival'', or ''gallery'' quality they are still much more crisp and vibrant than what you typically see from a grocery store photo lab.

You will want to be careful when handling them, as the surface of the paper can smudge easily if the print is not allowed to dry, and will easily show fingerprints regardless of when it''s handled directly.

I got a reasonable price for nice quality glossy paper for printing photos from my Epson XP-600 wireless printer. I often print pictures to share with friends and family and pleased with the outcome using this product.

Previously, the photos I printed were terrible. Thought my printer was the problem, but apparently it was the paper. All is well now that I am using Epson paper.

I have tried to buy the so called compatible cartridges and it has always been a disaster. There just isn''t any substitute for the original factory manufactured inkjet cartridges by Canon.

This purchase was a wise choice that provided performance as advertised. I see no banding or other imperfections when using this cartridge. In fact, the printed results for both graphics and text are well-blended and crisp, respectively. Surprisingly, the results supersedes that of a more expensive, albeit older, HP printer that I use. The cost of these cartridges for the Canon is more economical than the HP. As usual the "no-hassle" ordering through Amazon.com is convenient and secure. I would definitely recommend this product for its value and exceptional performance. Thanks again Amazon.com for a great online ordering experience!
