One of the major complaints about the iPad when it was first introduced was that one could not print from it. Apple heard us and with the release of IOS (iPhone Operating System) 4.2 the company included Apple Air Print a technology that allows, or is supposed to allow the iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch to print wirelessly from the device to an ever-increasing number of Hewlett Packard printers like the "HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Inkjet Printer."

Hewlett Packard upped the ante with this All-n-One (AIO) unit by including wireless and giving the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Inkjet Printer an e-mail address (@hpeprint.com address) from which one can print from any computer, iPad--or other mobile device--via a technology called "HP e-Print." One can also print wirelessly to an Apple mobile device like an iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone etc. via Apple Air Print.

Un-Packing

Make no mistake the "HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus" is a hefty printer checking in a 21 pounds. And while the unit does not require a two-man lift, it will require some finesse to get it out of the box and onto a flat surface. One unboxed it took me a little less than 15 minutes to completely assemble the printer including the duplexer unit. Thankfully the power supply is built-in, so no heavy power brick to find a place for.

Network Setup

Before connecting the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus network via Ethernet (RJ-45), or Wireless the decision must be made to utilize one or the other communications medium, but not both. USB can be utilized with either configuration. Since I wanted my iPad to "speak" to the printer and print I installed the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus utilizing wireless and USB and I can print either way as well as utilize the scanner to print-to-computer. Wireless set-up was effortless using DHCP; all I needed to know was the network WPA2 passcode.

Wireless Printing & e-Print

One of the selling points of the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO is of course the ability of the iPad to print to the device either wirelessly (Air Print) or via e-Print. I am happy to report that both work!

As I stated above Apple IOS version 4.2 shipped with Air Print, which allows the iPad to wirelessly "talk" to Air Print enabled printers like the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. Once the printer was set up on the wireless network I could see the printer on the iPad from Air Print enabled applications like Safari, select the printer and print. G that was it, no setup needed on the iPad.

HP''s e-Print also works like a charm, most of the time. With e-Print the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is assigned a customizable e-mail address to which one can forward e-mail''s to be printed from iPad, iMac, iPod, or PC as long as the printer is connected to the Internet. This feature works reasonably well; it is supposed to be able to print attachments, but this is a hit or miss proposition; i.e. sometimes it works, sometime not, sometimes it print half a page. However, overall, I am pleased with e-print.

Software Installation

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is connected primarily to an Apple iMac 2.7GHz machine with 4GB RAM, 1TB hard drive running OS X Lion Version 10.7.2. Out of the box the software disc will not work with Lion 10.7.2, so I had to download a software update from Apple and another from HP, but both worked seamlessly and I was able to get up and running with full functionality (including scan-to-computer) in under 15 minutes. And I have to say for the record I like the iMac interface for the printer better than the Windows 7 interface.

Printing

Pretty straight forward; the software installation process installed a full set of print drivers which in turn give you complete control over the printing process, including two-sided printing. The HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can also print from inserted USB flash drives and or MMC/SD Media cards.

Scanning

The HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus offers up both a 50-sheet ADF and flatbed scanner for use. Initialing the scanning process can be accomplished from the included software, inserting a page(s) into the ADF, or the units control panel. Once an item is placed into the ADF or on the flatbed scanner glass surface, you can push the Scan button on the front panel, at which time you choose where to scan to: Computer, USB Flash Drive, or Memory Card. Once a destination is chosen, you can then chose to scan to file (.PDF is an option), e-mail, or photo.

Copy Process

This process, like printing is pretty straight forward; both color and black & white copies can be made, up to 99 at a time. Because there is a duplexer installed two-sided copies can be made in a number of different configurations, including 1-side original/ 1-side copy; 1-side original/ 2-side copy; 2-side original/ 1-side copy; 2-side original/ 2-side copy. Copies can also be enlarged up to 144%, or reduced down to 25% of original.

Working with Photos

As stated above, the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus will accept input from a number of commercially available portable memory storage devices, slots for which are located on the left hand side of the printer underneath the cartridge insertion flip down panel. Simply insert the memory card and the photos it contains are displayed on the small 4.6" touch-screen color display on the right hand side of the unit.

Conclusion

Overall I like the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO, because it works seamlessly with my iMac and I can print to it from my iPad. The design is a little austere; there are no buttons to push because everything is controlled from the color (touch screen) display panel, which might prove problematic if it ever decides not to work. But, there is always the control set on the computer, so...

The built-in wired Ethernet capability, coupled with USB and wireless make the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO Inkjet Printer a versatile, flexible unit that is ideal for a small home office setting and well as workgroup setting. If you or your small workgroup need a scanner/ copier/ printer/ fax, and need to print from your iPad--or other mobile device--in some form or fashion the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus should be given serious consideration.

I''ll start by saying that I think this is an excellent machine.

My journey of buying a multi-function printer started with purchasing an HP Officejet Pro 8500 all-in-one. This was a top-rated machine, and I was excited when it arrived. Unfortunately, the particular 8500 that we received, although easy to setup, jammed constantly. After a week of jamming headaches, I headed online to Amazon to arrange for a return. When considering a replacement, I saw that the 8600 series OfficeJet printers had arrived, so I needed to consider them as well. At only about $25 more than I had paid for the 8500, I took the plunge.

The first decision with the 8600 was which of the three models to order. The basic model was quite attractively priced, and has features similar to the Plus and Pro models. The Plus model''s big advantage (in our case) was the larger display. Other features separating it from the basic model are the larger automatic document feeder (50 vs 35 sheets) and a slightly faster print speed (20 vs 18 ppm black and 16 vs 13 ppm color, according to the HP website.) Had we upgraded to the "Premium" model, we could have added an additional 250-sheet paper tray. The Premium model might be appropriate for a small workgroup which does does lots of printing, but in our case, would be extreme overkill based on our printing volumes -one ream of paper can last us many months!

Display: This printer went to my mother-in-law''s house and she''s not the most tech-savvy consumer. We chose the "Plus" model because of the larger display and it was a great choice! The display is great large, bright, and intuitive. My mother-in-law has no problem completing most tasks and following the very good on-screen video instructions.

Configuration: The printer was easy to configure without even connecting to a computer using the on-screen display to connect to the wi-fi network. In all, it probably took about 10-15 minutes, most of which was allowing the printer to complete its self-configuration checks and print head alignment. The software was easy to install on the computer, and the computer was able to discover the printer on the network almost instantly using the drivers on the included CD-ROM.

Printing: Print quality is quite good and very fast -the last time I purchased an inkjet printer was about 7 years ago, and the one this one replaced was 8 years old. Speed has come a long way in that time!

Copying: Again, this was quite simple. I especially like the easy on-screen options for dealing with two-sided originals and copies, allowing for all duplexing options without any additional fuss or difficulty.

Faxing: Also a straightforward operation, there were a few points worthy of comment. First, the fax self-configuration was great, and I appreciated the self-check during the setup process so that sending a "test fax" to someone was not necessary. Also, it worked fine with the AT&T U-Verse digital phone service -not all fax devices play well with digital phone services, so this was very nice. My mother-in-law also commented about how she appreciated that you can enter the destination fax number before inserting the document to be faxed into the feeder a nice feature as the destination fax number is usually at the top of the front page, which is often hidden by the document feeder once inserted.

Scanning: The network scanning was quite easy, and worked seamlessly something not true of all network scan devices. My previous experience had been that devices scanning over the network have some usability problems, and that they work best when connected directly to the computer. No issues here, however it worked great right out of the box with no physical connection to the computer.

Driver: The included drivers on the CD-ROM worked just fine, as well as those downloaded from the HP website. My one small complaint is that when auto-discovering the printer using Windows 7, Windows fails to install a usable driver. The user must first go to the HP website, download an appropriate driver, then install the driver directly. These extra steps were time-consuming and annoying but not enough for me to deduct a star.

Ink: The ink cartridges were very easy to insert and replace. I particularly appreciate that they are simple units and don''t have the tape-covered electrical contacts common on the older generation of cartridges which could sometimes come off during installation.

Overall: I give this printer a strong recommendation, and 5 stars. You may need to decide which model is best for you -depending on pricing, the larger display of the "Plus" model might not be worthwhile, and the price of the basic model is quite attractive. For us and our given user, the larger display was key and worth the extra cost. I''d buy one again!

Purchased this printer to replace another HP printer that had served it''s usfullness. This printer obviously is a work horse and prints out quality prints and photes without hesitation. Have tested it on almost everything without a glitch. Was easy to set up and meshed into our wireless system without hassle. I initially was so pleased with this printer:

1) easy to install/setup.

2) very fast.

3) duplex printing.

4) wireless.

UNTIL... I tried printing photos.

I have two type of photo paper Home:

1)Genuine HP "Arm&Leg cost" photo paper.

2)The very popular Costco (kirkland) premium photo paper.

I had no problem with the HP paper.

The only way I managed to have the printer feed the kirkland paper,

was by sticking a piece of masking tape (as found on a forum), on the

back of the paper. This gave enough grip to the picking roller, to

make the paper work with this printer.

The same paper works flawlessly in other HP printers and other brands.

If you plan on using this printer for photo printing without using HP photo

paper, I suggest you to google "hp 8600 will not feed photo paper"

I too had the problem of the receipt printing out on the other half of the sheet (label) when printing my postage, but I solved it by only inserting one label into the printer, NOT one whole sheet. My printer simply stops printing when it detects the end of the page and spits out the label. I have a feeling this will work for most other printers as well. I would encourage all to try this once. For me, as a result of this technique, not a single label is wasted. I LOVE THEM!!!

UPDATE:I got a new printer, a completely different brand and the above technique works like a charm in this one, too. I really think this works on all printers, give it a try! :o)

FINALLY, I wish I would have found these a month ago when I started selling. They are the cheapest price for self-adhesive shipping labels anywhere! And to boot, free shipping! They work just like normal paper on my standard ink jet printer. The day I received them someone bought one of my items so I was able to test them out and they worked flawlessly. Have you ever tried to re-use your Amazon boxes by peeling the label off? As you know, they use SUPERGLUE to ensure that their labels stick! Great for mailing not so great for those of us wanting to do a little recycling.

We have had to make a number of shipments recently, and have been using online services to create the labels. We carefully and painstakingly peeled off the Amazon label, then taped the new label down using shipping tape. This was time-consuming and a royal pain!

When this showed up in my Quick Picks, I realized this could be a great solution. These labels lay directly over the Amazon labels and you cannot see through them!

After reading from other reviewers that I could "turn off receipts" (which normally print on the second half of the page) I knew it was the perfect solution! And, it was. Once I found where to turn it off in Paypal, I was set.

First, I drew an X on the top sheet of a piece of paper and printed my sample label. With this, I was able to determine where my labels would print. I then placed the label into my printer (in my case it was face down yours may be different) and printed the first label. I peeled the label off to use, then turned the paper around (with the other end at the top) and ... presto, printed the second label.

At one point, I made a mistake and cut the label in half before it was printed. Not wanting to lose even a single label, I inserted the half-page into my printer. It worked.

Every printer is different, so you will need to do your own test as to which end is up, but if you need to do shipping using online services, these are exactly what you want. Not only are they secure, but you can save a LOT of tape from taping yours down!

To be honest, before I even opened the package I had this review all planned out. I have a mail order business, & I have used Avery labels many times in the past. The quality has always been superb, but they''re just priced too high for me & that''s what I''d planned to say along with 4 stars (5 for quality, 3 for price).

Well, I''m glad I printed a few first. I don''t know if it''s just this label or the entire line, & I don''t know when they made the change; but they''ve gone to a much thinner backing then I remember. In fact the backing is thinner then the 2 brands of generic labels I normally use.

Out of about 15 prints in an admittedly picky HP 4400, there were 3 "paper jams" caused by the HP not being happy with the backing. I use quotes around the phrase paper jam, because they weren''t full jams; the printer just stopped & thought it was jammed.

I recently returned a batch of a new brand of generic labels for the same problem, but again the generics I normally use don''t have this issue. I printed around 30 of my usual generic labels tonight with no problem before switching to the Avery''s.

On the other hand, the actual labels continue to be best in the business. Solid, thick, great adhesive, as smudge proof as they get & easy to peel.

Unfortunately, between the thin backing (which also curls after 1 of the 2 labels has been used) & the high price (about 6 1/2 times the cost of quality generics), I can only go 3 stars.

I look forward to comments from regular Avery users regarding the thin backing issue. I use labels for my business, & it would be useful to know if Avery is now using this thin backing on all their labels.

I just bought the Epson Artisan 800, which I will review shortly. I have not made up my mind as to whether I will keep it or not. I have gone with Epson for years and the quality of inks is unsurpassed in the industry. I usually print 8x10 prints. In testing the printer there were several software glitches that made it print more prints than I told it to.

The ink works stellar on Costco premium photo paper that I personally like more than Epson. It is cheaper and dries faster and looks as good. This ink produces professional quality prints. Epson has done it again.

Nonetheless,it is immaterial what these lab test claim. What matters is what happens in real life. I am not going to make a print that is draft quality which is what alot of these tests do. I am making fine art photos.

Here is the glitch...I printed 5 8x10''s and 3 4x6 with margins. My light cyan is 2/3rd''s gone. The high capacity black is 1/3 gone and light magenta is 1/2 gone. That is roughly $15 Epson prices or a little under $3/ print. Costco for an 8x10 is $1.79 and 11 1/2x 14 is $2.79 The Epson eats ink like candy. I suspect that the prices for prints are much cheaper commercially.Obviously custom prints are going to be higher. So it comes down to convience and creative control. When the cost is almost 2x what a commercial lab charges, it may not be worth it.

Price: Amazon beats Epson by $3 on the 5 pack and if you have super saver then it is money in your pocket. Epson beats Amazon by $4 on the black and if you buy 3 or more inks there is free overnight shipping. Interestingly the high capacity black which they sell the most of is $2 more than the other colors.....go figure.

Caveat emptorEpson was found to have made the electronics on it''s printer cartriges reflect empty cartridges when they were not empty so buyers would have to buy more ink cartriges. We all know Epson makes money selling ink. Printers do not make big bucks, ink does.I received a bunch of coupons that supposedly I could enter the numbers into their website and get free ink. The number never worked, ergo no free ink.

So that is the ink story. I think I am going to check out the Canon all in ones before I decide to keep this Epson. The last I saw Canon had come way up in quality and the inks are cheaper.

This Epson 99 Color Multipack is quite a bargain, when you need replacement ink cartridges for your Epson Artisan 700 or 800 model printer. This multipack includes all 5 standard capacity color cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta), but does NOT include a black cartridge. Purchasing the multipack will usually save you anywhere from $5 to $10, over buying the cartridges individually, depending on where you buy it from. If you need a replacement black cartridge, you will need to order the #98 Black separately.

All of the cartridges in this multipack are the Epson #99 standard capacity type, which are claimed to yield approximately 500 pages each, based on the ISO/IEC 24711 and 24712 standard for ink jet products. Of course the page count will vary, depending on the amount of ink coverage of each particular color you use on each given page. In comparison, the #98 high capacity color ink cartridges are claimed to yield approx. 855 pages per color, based on the same ISO test standards. Black is only available in #98 high capacity, which is rated at about 545 pages (it is assumed that more black ink is used per page than color ink). This Epson 99 Color Multipack, as well as the #98 black cartridges are available at most online and local retailers. But as of this review date, the #98 high capacity color cartridges are only available for purchase directly from the Epson website.

The Claria ink in these cartridges is boasted to produce photos with unsurpassed richness, depth and clarity, and is also smudge, scratch, water and fade resistant. Epson claims that this ink, when used in combination with Epson Premium Photo Paper, produces better quality photos than you can get from a photo lab. As for my personal experience, I have found this ink to indeed produce very rich and vivid color photos, which look at least as good as I can get from a local photo lab. What amazes me is how quickly this ink dries, when used on Epson Premium photo paper. After the photos print, at the highest print quality settings on my Artisan 800, I can touch the printed side of the paper within 15 to 20 seconds without smudging. Within 2 to 3 minutes the ink has dried enough for normal handling. In comparison, when I print at highest quality settings on my HP OfficeJet 7310, using HP Premium Plus photo paper and HP Vivera ink, I have to wait at least 15 to 20 minutes before I can even touch the printed side of the photos, and a couple of hours before the photos can be handled without extra caution. I have also tested the water resistant claims of the Epson Claria ink, and do find that it is resistant to slight amounts of moisture. Please note the words "resistant" and "slight" in that last sentence. If a small drop of water comes in contact with the printed Claria ink, and is allowed to dry without touching or smearing it, the photo will show little to no signs of discoloration or damage to the image. However, if any part of the image becomes saturated with water, or if the drop(s) of water are smeared in any way, you can definitely see signs of discoloration and/or color smudging/smearing. When I tested my HP Vivera ink in the same manner, even the slightest amount of moisture introduced to the prints would cause obvious damage to the images. Therefore I can personally back the claim that the Epson Claria ink, as used in the #99 cartridges, is modestly water resistant. The claim of scratch resistance is also true, unless a very sharp or pointed object is dragged across the print. So for normal everyday handling, this Claria ink seems to stand up to a moderate amount of abuse without the photo being ruined. I do not have the means to test the fade resistance claims, so I guess I have to take Epson at its word in this area.

Another thing I would like to point out, regarding my previous experience with Epson Claria inks, is that it does not tend to dry up and clog the print heads nearly as easily as I have experienced with the HP Vivera ink. I have an Epson Stylus Photo R380 Inkjet Printer, which uses Claria ink cartridges, and I can let the printer sit, unused, for several weeks, and still get perfect printing results without having the run a cleaning cycle on the printer. This makes me believe that the Claria ink cartridges will remain good, when left in the printer for extended periods of time. It also shows that Epson has designed a good method of sealing the print heads very well when in the parked position.

I am extremely impressed with the #99 Claria ink cartridges, and find this Epson 99 Color Multipack to be a great bargain. At the time of this review, this multipack provides all 5 main color cartridges for less than $10 each, here on Amazon.com. To me this is a very good price for such high quality ink. I highly recommend this multipack to anyone who owns or is purchasing an Epson Artisan 700 or 800 model printer. The Artisan series printers are great products (see my review of the Epson Artisan 800 Wireless Photo All-in-One Printer), and this Claria ink, when used with Epson Premium photo paper, is the perfect companion for these amazing printers.

I read the reviews concerning the Epson ink cartridges, specifically for the Artisan 700/800 series. Amazon''s current price for the color 5-pack is indeed among the best prices I''ve seen for that 5-pack. However, consider this: The Epson website sells the 5 "high capacity" cartridges for 1.77 times the price of Amazon''s regular-capacity 5-pack. The ISO yield ratio for the high versus regular capacity cartridges is 850/500 = 1.71, very close to the above price ratio of 1.77. Thus, you pay about the same price per unit of ink either way, but if you go with the high-capacity cartridges, you will not have to replenish nearly as frequently. As prices change, this argument may not remain valid, of course.

I was setting up my brothers new HP Premium Printer and the HP tech told me to make sure I match and use HP photo paper with the HP printer. So stick with the Epson Photo Papers. By matching the ink to the paper it was designed for, not only will you get the best possible image, you''ll also be using the ink in the most cost efficient way. I''m probably averaging around (50) 8X10 photo sheets per ink cartridge.

I''ve been using Brother label makers & tapes for more than 20 years. The biggest problem I''ve encounter is, the tape does not stick for more than a day or two, not even to clean paper. I always put a strip of tape over them to keep them in place.

A few months ago I paid the extra bucks & bought a roll with the strong adhesive. This tape is still sticking to the three shiny, slick binders I labeled a few months ago. I''m very pleased.

I was looking to buy a printer and fax machine for some time. Our old fax m/c and the printer had reached the end of their lives. Recently Brother is having some great promotions with 2 year extended warranties. With the advertised low prices for these machines, I couldn''t resist. After some research I decided to order the 5460 multi function all in one. Boy, am I delighted!

What I like:

Setup was very easy. Hooking up the machine took me about 10 minutes. Installing the software, another 8-10.

The print quality was great.

The printer is network ready. It works with both wired and wireless networks. This feature alone is worth the price. No need for any wires from your computer or any computer on the network to the printer. If you don''t have a network at home, don''t worry. You can hook using a USB cable. The manufacturers don''t include a USB printer cable usually as with this product. So don''t discard the cable if you are throwing away your old printer they cost around 35 bucks.

You can receive the faxes onto your computer. You need to change the mode on the machine panel. The setup software opened up all the ports necessary. Now all the junk faxes goes to your PC and you don''t have to waste paper! Even if your PC is off, the faxes are stored in the machine''s memory so that you can later ''download'' to your PC.

You can send faxes right out of your PC using the provided software. Another cool thing. As I work from home remotely, this helps me a lot. Otherwise, I would have had to print out the documents before faxing. The software comes with an address book which can sync with your Outlook address book.

The setup also enables your PC for internet faxing. i.e., even if you don''t have your Brother fax machine connected, as long as you have an internet connection, you can fax documents using the internet. This is pretty cool though not a new feature. While I am at the airport, I can fax those last minute expense reports right from my laptop.

I haven''t tried the scan feature yet, that will be the least used feature for me.

Given the print quality is good, I would believe the copier would be just great as well.

The paper feeder sits within the footprint of the machine. This is another neat and space saving feature no awkward paper supports hanging out.

You also have digital media reader right in the front so that you can print directly from your media.

The all-in-one is a space saver. It cleared much space off my work table. With all-in-ones, say, if the cartridge goes bust, all parts are affected though.

What could be better?

The USB cable and the network cable slots are not on the outside of the machine. You have to lift up the top bed and wire these inside. This takes up about 10-20% of the cable length depending on where you position your PC/laptop relative to the machine.

The Brother cartridges are always relatively expensive compared to, say, Canon. I have found that Brother''s tend to be more durable than Canon. But for the higher end Canon''s you do pay more. So it is a trade-off between up-front price/running cost (ink refills,cartridge) and reliability.

At this point I love the machine. For $99 after MIR and extended 2 yr warranty, it is a great holiday deal!

I originally purchased this AIO for my mother. She needed a printer. However, for the price I figured that the 5460 was a better deal.

As has been mentioned previously, the setup was extremely easy. The only thing that I do not care for is the location of the USB port. You are forced to open the scanner lid and meander the cord through a set of curves in order to plug it in. I suppose this is to keep the cord from getting knocked loose in an office environment. This is a bit ambitious in my opinion. While the 5460 is great for a home office or for personal use, I think it would be out of its depth in a medium or larger office.

After seeing how well the ADF (auto document feeder) performed, I was forced to buy one of these for myself. I previously owned a Microtek 5950 with ADF. The ADF went dead after a year and the full unit costs around 175. For roughly $100 (I bought the 5460 with a rebate), I can get an ADF, Fax, Copier, and Printer. This wasn''t a hard choice to make.

I almost forgot, the per page cost for ink are cheap. At least the per page cost for ink appears to be cheaper than the HP models that I researched. This is according to the info that I''ve read. I haven''t printed enough pages to determine if this is true.

The color quality of the scans appears to be a tiny off with photos. But in all honesty, I haven''t scanned many pictures. This might be my doing. Or they may be some sort of adjustment that I can make with the settings. I have scanned roughly 200 pages of documents, and they look perfect. For my needs, this machines is a great fit.

The print quality is typical for any inkjet printer in this price range.

Print speed is acceptable as well. I must saw however, that I haven''t been able to achieve the same print speeds listed in the Specs.

I wasn''t going to mention this, but this machine is also easy to use. Easy in that there are Scan, Copy, Fax, and Photo Capture buttons on the front of this unit. I didn''t think much of them at first, but I have found that I''ve been using these buttons instead of the software utility that came with the 5460.

The bottom line is that the 5460 can be beaten in output quality (scan and print). There are better scanners, better printers, and better copiers. However, for the price I haven''t seen a better deal.

This is my first all-in-one, so I don''t have a reference point with which to compare. However, I printed a photo on glossy paper and the machine produced what appears to me is an almost exact copy of the original digital image, something very close to what I''d expect from a photo lab. Text printing is not as fine as the laser printer I own, but it displays very well nonetheless. The copier and fax functions also work very well, and the controls are very easy to use. I can''t imagine any other all-in-ones operating even slightly better than this extremely reasonably priced machine. I''m extremely satisfied with this product.

Bought at Staples 3 weeks ago. Went into Staples looking for a FAX machine and came out with this machine for just $50 more. Wasn''t looking to replace my printer, but coincidentally I was running out of ink for it. I set the machine up and faxed my paper within 25 minutes. Finally last week I installed the software for the printer & scanner. Works great for the price. If you want very high quality prints, this may not be for you. But if you want good prints, a FAX machine and a scanner, you''ll have a hard time beating this machine.

I just bought this printer because my old hp office jet 6110 was flaking out on me and being a college student i can''t have any down time. i wan not originally looking for another all in one because my HP was so big but considering that this was small and $50 more than the printer i was looking at AND it had networking ability i decided to try it out... the print quality is not bad for a $150 printer and it''s small size is great. i only have one problem with it... it seems that you have to install the brother software to be able to print... most of the "network ready" printers run a print server so you can just enter the ip address and go... but for the price and features overall it is a good piece of equipment

Looking for a good "hot pink" copy paper. The Pulsar Pink looked too pastel and Plasma Pink looked too dark red.

The paper quality is great:

-nice weight, maybe too heavy for some projects

-takes laser printing toner well

-The scores are not hard to find as another reviewer says. They make quick work if you don''t have a folding machine. BUT ... see below

The problems:

-Glossy paper generally creates static but this was ridiculous. At times 4 sheets would stick together. It wasn''t the printer because they would pull through as one really long page as they stuck together. I ended up wasting 42 out of 150 sheets because of miss-feeds. I used Hammermill glossy paper on the same day to finish the job and had NO static. It was clearly the paper; not the weather.

-The scores that make folding easy split the paper into two layers when you fold them. Not very flattering.

Given the cost, wasted pages caused by static, and the separation upon folding, this did not work for me. I''ll stick with the cheaper Hammermill (1/4 cost per page). I have a production paper folder, so the scores make no difference for me.

We were extremely disappointed in this ''tri-fold''... if that''s what you want to call it.

We''re always willing to pay more for tri-fold brochure paper because it will typically cut your folding time in half.

Not so for this paper. You have to really work at trying to figure out where the (slight) line is to fold on.

My parents bought me this printer back in 2000 after I built my first computer in high school so that I could print my school work. 10 years later, a move to and from Germany, several states, and a couple other printers in between, I still find myself using this for my classwork. Its economical, and dependable.

This thing has never broken, I have never had one problem with it over 10 years of frequent use. It''s a workhorse. One of the greatest features was that this was one of the last HP printers to feature large ink cartridges before they switched to more expensive, smaller ones that frequently run dry and quickly eclipse the cost of the actual printer. HP''s largest profit margins, by a LONG shot, are on their ink and toner sales. I have an F4200 that I got for $40 from a friend, and stopped using anything but the scanner when I found out replacing the ink cost more than the printer.

These cartridges were also easily refilled and reused many times before I bought refurbed ones.

Looking at the used costs for $120-130, I wouldn''t pay that simply because they photo quality has been passed. But if you come across a working used one for $10-25 (considering the low price of new printers), BUY IT.

This is one of the last great HP printers that was truly a great value to the consumer. If I bought another printer, I''d go with another company that had cheaper ink and larger capacity cartridges.

HP Deskjet 842C Printer

The HP842C inkjet printer is designed for the home or small office. It attaches to a computer via the classic parallel cable or to a USB port. You should connect the USB cable from the printer to the computer before you apply power to the printer. It can be used with Windows 3.1, 95 with an IEEE 1284 parallel cable, or with Windows 98, Me, and XP with a USB cable. The black inkjet cartridge is the #15, the tricolor inkjet cartridge is the #17. The #17 tricolor cartridges is often harder to find. This printer works well for the average user.

HP seems to have a policy of "planned obsolescence" in manufacturing new printers that use new inkjet cartridges. Over time it becomes harder to quickly purchase replacement cartridges. If you bought a used printer you can refer to another HP printer manual for general advice. HP advises against refilling a cartridge but you may find doing this useful.

The HP840C User''s Guide has a Table of Contents that covers the topics in its 74 pages. Be sure to read the warnings in the manual about proper care of inkjet cartridges. Leaving them unused for many months may shorten their useful life. New cartridges have a plastic tape over the nozzles to prevent oxidation of the ink. One user had a problem with the separate power supply. It is probably not good practice to keep the printer powered on when not in use. Be sure the bottom tray is pushed against the printer body, a loose fit can cause printing problems. [If you buy a used printer download the software from HP.]

I do not ask too much out of a printer, just print mostly text and some pictures and this printer the HP842C is quite suitable. The replacement cartridges are easy to replace and paper is easy to load. I have yet to experience a paper jam and that is impressive considering how long I have owned this printer.

I actually got mine new not refurbished. Have printed photos I took with my Canon A70 and from my greeting card software.

Have gotten many compliments on the photos.

Suggest buying Hp paper or other name brand instead of a value brand.

These labels are real good but the price is a killer. These should be half the price they are but they are just about the only product out there. This product together with the Avery "stomper" works like gangbusters. Full color graphic printing comes out beautifully. No problems with drying, I wait an hour or so just to be sure. I use Canon MX870 ink jet all-in-one printer. I use CorelDraw 10 to make the graphic for the disc. I prepared my own template by scanning a picture of the template and with measurement and testing, it worked fine. (Vertical distance between two graphics is exactly five inches to make things easy. You make the upper graphic then drop duplicate down 5" to get lower graphic.)

I have been using the non-full face labels for years and hated the big hole in the center. Now I realize the full face version requires only a 5/8" hole at the center. Much easier and elegant artistically. Why does anyone want the old type? The hole in the disc is just under 5/8".

The Avery "stomper" fixture Avery CD/DVD Label Applicator ( 5699 ) has a provision to grab the two "ears" on the Avery labels. This makes centering and application very easy and precise. My old "Stomper" is retired as it lacks the ear holders.

I have had no problems with the label separating in the printer or gumming up my player, but my experience on this is limited.

Cricut Imagine Machine

I am very disappointed with this Cricut Imagine machine. I was very excited about it at first and asked for it as a gift. I have spent literally months trying to get it to live up to what I was expecting but so far no luck. It is my first cricut.

Pet peeves:

1. It takes a while to run through the printer and cutting areas. If I just want to cut most of the time, because the printer cartridges are so very expensive, it''s a big timewaster! It''s like using dial-up when you could have high-speed internet, aggravating!!

2. The cutting mats will stick to paper a couple of cuts (or if you''re very, very lucky) maybe 10 in the machine, then you can only use really thin paper, all other paper doesn''t stick anymore, it moves around when the blade is trying to cut. (Yes I have tried washing the mats, and almost everything else suggested except the things that void the warranty)

3. When you have an image selected, it usually has to be sized, that''s fine. But there isn''t a drop down list of sizes, I have to sit there and tap the size bigger until it''s the size I want, it takes a really long time as opposed to the rolling dial on older machines. I would use the fit to page (or make the page smaller but that takes just as long to program the machine), but most of the time I don''t want it that big, when I''m doing a scrapbook I like the 5"-6" size.

4. When you''re using a regular cricut cartridge there is no zoom button to figure out which button to pick, it''s zoomed out so you can see the whole keypad. The problem is that most of the images look like little squiggles. Basically you can label your booklet (if you have an old booklet, not the newer shiny ones, it doesn''t work then), or try to memorize which ones you like to use, or guess which one it is you want, do you want squiggle 1-30? Shift or no Shift? It goes on and on... Then delete all the ones you don''t actually want, it''s very time consuming when you just want to print one little layer!!

5. You really can only use a full 12" by 12" paper when cutting, almost any scrap you use will most often move around and not actually stick to the "sticky" mat.

The WORST problem in my book is this:

6. THERE IS NO EASY WAY OF MOVING THE IMAGE!! You can''t move the image to the middle of the page, or side or anywhere but the top left. Plus since the mat isn''t terribly sticky (I''m being very generous saying that) it uses up all the stick in that area, if you could move the image around you might be able to get more use out of it. (It would be so cool if you could have a "move image" button so you could resize it right in the machine instead of having to buy a gypsy...) This kind of is a money grab on Provo crafts part. They sell a machine that does half the stuff, then say here pay $$$ so that it can do everything it''s capable of!!

My summary is this: I could live with the rest if it was easy to move the image on the screen of the Imagine, and the mats were sticky enough. But all put together????

Thanks for reading my Cricut Imagine rant; I don''t want anyone else to be this disappointed in the sub-par machine.

My husband purchased this machine for me as a Mother''s Day gift. We had it overnighted. When the machine arrived it would not calibrate. After several attempts I called ProvoCraft only to find out that there are many of these machines on the market that are bad. You have to go to the "about" screen on the machine and if the version number ends in 201C the machine is bad and will not work. I contacted Amazon who immediately overnighted another machine only to have the EXACT same problem! I contacted Provocraft who told me it would take at least two weeks to get me another because they wanted my machine back first. I was insulted because I HAD paid for a good machine and received bad ones! They were cheating me not the other way around! Amazon stopped selling the machine for a day but then went right back to it! If it would take me two weeks to get one how did they replace an entire inventory in a day? Provocraft and their distributors are making the customers do the work for them...Rather than them finding out which machines are bad the customer gets the machine and then has to go through the process of returning it and waiting for another. A recall should have been done on these machines. How horrible to treat customers in this way! I would absolutely NOT buy this machine unless they could prove it was not the "bad" version 201C.

I have had the cricut machines since they came out and this one takes the prize! Very EASY to use! Love the print quality! I have used the machine to create die-cuts and full 12x12 sheets of colored patterned paper. VERY COOL!

I am a bit disappointed with how this item works with the GYPSY. It will act like a NORMAL cricut ONLY! You can''t colorize your GYPSY projects :( I did find a work around. Print a full 12z12 color paper first. Then re-insert and cut what you need with the GYPSY. Again, not IDEAL, but it works and you get the color match that you needed right out of your machine.

I can''t comment on the ink cost/use. I haven''t had it for more than 1 month. The cartridges seem LARGE and they should produce lots of projects. The cost of the ink is between $32 and $36. Best value is thru Amazon.

PRO: Versatile, EASY TO USE, and you can print what you need!

CON: HEAVY machine, not portable, and not fully compatible with the GYPSY (yet)

I''ve never been able to find the same color of paper to match the images on the Cricut cartridge manuals so it does seem like a big plus not having to find paper colors that fit the color palette in the photos, however, on the other hand, having the image cut in one layer seems to take away from the home made look of the finished image. On the plus side, it seems to save on the time required to cut and assemble many little pieces, but I think you loose some satisfaction in being able to say you made it yourself. The finished look almost looks like digital scrapbooking. After looking at many reviews online on You Tube, there does seem to be a known problem with the cutting mat as well. Paper does not seem to adhere as well to the new cutting mats and unfortunately you can''t use the old mats with it. If you are planning to purchase this machine, I highly recommend that you buy it from a seller that will accept returns if you are not satisfied with it''s performance. If you own one and have figured out a good work around for the mat problem, I''m sure you could sell the colored and cut images a''la carte through Etsy to help pay for your investment!

I have had my Imagine for 3 weeks. It was fairly easy to learn how to use it but I am dismayed that Cricut would market something with so many glitches and problems. The size selection buttons are annoying and, on occasion, will NOT respond to your poke-commands.

The mat is not very sticky and because the item you are printing/cutting is always placed in the upper left corner, loses its ability to hold the paper fairly quickly.

Most annoying is the machine tends to turn itself off and back on half way through the print/cut process. I either have to scrap what has been printed and start again or cut it out myself with scissors.

It seems this machine was put on the market before it was well tested and the problems worked out.

It''s a wonderful idea. I would wait awhile to buy one and hope that Cricut makes some improvements.

Please be aware, before buying this printer, that it uses traditional four-color (cyan, magenta, yellow, black (CMYK)) technology. While four-color printing is the standard for offset color printing (i.e.: the process used by commercial printing plants), this printer is not capable of producing the lifelike continuous tones of a six-or-more color printer designed for printing photographs. That doesn''t mean it''s bad for its intended use--the speedy printing of typical business documents on plain paper, or getting output that simulates the four-color offset printing process--but it does mean that shoppers looking for photographic-quality output should look for a different printer better suited to that objective.

On behalf of a family member who works as a commercial artist, I wanted a large-format printer to replace a pair of ancient Epsons that constantly clogged. I bought a new large-format Epson (Workforce 1100--see my review) thinking that 15 years of development since my old printers were made would mean Epson had solved the clogging problem. I was mistaken--it clogged almost immediately and took multiple ink-consuming cleaning cycles to clear before it clogged again--so I returned it.

I was somewhat wary of this OfficeJet 7000, since it has gotten some very articulate and feature-specific negative reviews on Amazon. However, I took a chance because A. there are very few large-format inkjet printers available, and B. those that HP sells specifically for graphics users (DesignJets) hover around the $1000 mark--They may be very good printers, but I didn''t want to spend that much.

Making sure that the local store I bought my OfficeJet 7000 from had a reasonable return policy, I dragged the large box home and began to unpack it. The first thing that surprised me was seeing that it has built-in ethernet--a rare feature among printers in this price range. While I don''t need to network the printer at the moment, and I don''t know how well it works, it''s nice to know we have that option down the road, without buying additional hardware. I connected it via USB (you''ll need your own cable), and got to work.

Installation of the printhead and supplied starter inks was fast and easy, and the software installed quickly on my Mac (OS X). As I recall, the printer then started its own ink priming/calibration routine that took about 15 minutes--a one-time thing, unless you want to manually run it again later (I have not had to).

With its print driver set to maximum quality, output quality on the 7000 (from Adobe Illustrator on a Mac) is very good--Again, for its intended use of printing business documents and graphic designs with solid blocks of color, not photos intended for framed art. In general, output colors are very bright and close to what I see on the screen--and this is on plain paper--although darker colors (like deep browns) appear just a bit washed out, and there is no setting I can find in the print driver to directly fine-tune this density.

Speaking of software, the 7000 comes with a decent CD that not only inserts the usual controls for various basic printer settings into the OS-level print dialog (OS X, in my case), but includes gadgets that let you run utilities on the printer such as head cleaning and additional calibration cycles (haven''t needed it) and track what you''ve printed and how often you''ve interacted with the printer for such events as ink cartridge changes. Just keep in mind, if you are a user looking for endless print output tweakability, this software doesn''t have much--It was clearly designed for the simplicity that business users want. The good news, as I mentioned above, is that I''ve found its output to be quite color-accurate without a lot of tweaking, even if the dark mixed colors suffer a bit (black is fine). However, if you really want press-proof quality output, check out one of the HP printers designed for the graphic arts.

Like all inkjets, the OfficeJet 7000 is built on the model of selling you the printer relatively cheaply, then making money for the manufacturer on your future ink purchases. I can accept this reality, and the less-than-perfect color calibration (of dark colors) if I know the printer will work reliably, and so far this 7000 has been a champ. After years of dealing with the endless clogs (and unreplaceable printheads) of Epson printers, I am luxuriating in the sheer joy and novelty of a printer that just uncomplainingly puts ink down on paper without clogging every ten minutes. It''s been six weeks and not a single clog. And while I would characterize the 7000''s actual printing speed as "pretty fast" compared to my retired Epsons, the biggest improvement in overall output speed has come from simply not having to take time out to unclog the old Epsons'' finicky heads.

As for reviews that mention paper jams, I can only guess that such reviewers got lemons, because my 7000 has been jam-free from the beginning, even with light cardstock that has to bend around a paper path that starts with the front-load tray. I would have preferred a printer with the option of a straight-through paper path (like the Epson Workforce 1100) for heavier stock, but that''s a minor quibble when you consider how much more reliable it has been.

Update from 12/2011:

Everything I''ve said in the review above remained true until a few months ago, when the printer began having problems feeding the last few inches of a sheet of paper. Remember, this printer is capable of borderless printing, something I use regularly to print designs to the edge of the paper. Suddenly, the printer began stopping its normal paper feed when the print head was an inch or two from the end of the sheet on such a borderless print, while the print head would continue going left and right and laying down ink as if the paper was moving. When it was done with the print, it wouldn''t eject the paper, either--It just sat there, and when you physically yanked out the paper, you''d find a muddy mess of ink which reflected the non-movement of paper.

Fortunately, I had purchased an extended warranty from the well-known national office product retailer I had bought the printer from. After horsing around with their online and on-phone tech support and extended warranty claims organization for a few hours, they finally agreed it was something not worth printing, and they refunded my original purchase price. (Although I was grateful for their honoring of my extended warranty, I was less than thrilled with their services. Not to mention any names, but I will say that their extended warranty claims organization did not exactly "Max" out my satisfaction level.)

I applied the refund toward a new copy of the same printer from the same retailer (amazingly, for $100 less than last time), and within hours I was having what appeared to be USB communication issues (switching to ethernet bypassed the problem, but didn''t fix it). More importantly, the new printer began to exhibit (within days) the exact same paper mis-feed issue that the old one had! This time, I was obviously within HP warranty and received courteous phone support. After going through their standard firm-grasp-of-the-obvious questions (Is it plugged in? Are the ink carts installed? Did you press print?), they agreed to send a replacement refurb unit if I send the apparently defective (new) one back to them. I will keep you posted on whether the new (refurb) one they send displays the same problems or not.

Update from 3/2012:

Since my last update, nothing about the paper feed issue described above has been resolved. The HP support group (based in a Canadian call center) has been professional and competent, but they cannot fix the problem of paper feed. I am now on my second refurb replacement provided by HP, and it has the same issue that extends back to the original model that I wrote the original review about. HP understood my frustration and offered a choice of next steps, one of which is a refund. After reading other reviews by users frustrated with similar paper feed issues, I have opted for the refund and will try a different brand, or possibly upgrade to the HP DesignJet model.

In summary, everything I said about my original copy of this printer is true, and that one deserves its original four stars. However, when it failed after nearly two years, no replacement copy of this same model has ever performed as well again in regard to paper feeding, despite their consistently good print quality preceding the last few inches of borderless output. I will conclude this review by changing my rating on this printer to three stars and giving sincere kudos to HP''s hard-working support organization, which has undoubtedly spent far more on servicing this issue and shipping printers back and forth than they ever made as profit on the device (of course, I have bought a few hundred dollars worth of ink from them in the last few years). If you get a good copy of this printer, it is very good. If you get a bad copy, it is maddeningly annoying for large-format/borderless paper feed, and therefore almost useless. Read all reviews and make an informed choice before you bite this hook.

We were very excited to buy our first wide-format printers. I am a designer and photographer and my husband is an architect so we needed something to meet both our needs. The cost seemed amazing $ on sale from $ but the quality of the images that came out was far worse than our 10 yearold less than $printer.

First off we did many testsprobably about $ worth of paper and ink. Tried it with all the special HP recommended papers tried several settings, printing from different programs, different papers. Everything looked grainy. The vectors and lines looked ok so long as they were not inverted (white lines with black background).

-If you just want to print AutoCad 13x19 drawings (black vectors)then you should be fine.

-If you want low contrast color pictures and you don''t care if the shaded areas are a bit grainythen you should be fine.

Anything else for the HP officejet 7000 just falls short.

The printer has very good quality. I like the fact that the software integrates well with the hP solution center so you can go to one place to view things such as ink and cleaning of print heads (I also have an officejet Pro 8000). The only thing I had a problem with was I thought it would print borderless on all formats up to the maximum size (I think it was 13 x 19). I made a custom brochure using Adobe Indesign and built it at 8.5 x 14 to give me a little more area to work with but could not find the setting to print borderless at that size. It supported 8.5 x 11 and 11 x 17 borderless. It would have been nice to have all sizes borderless. Maybe HP could put out an updated driver that would allow for that. Otherwise, it is a good printer for the money.

And I don''t say that lightly, folks. I''ve owned perhaps 25 printers over the last few decades, and this one is by far the most unreliable. Sure, it will give you a nice-quality 11 x 17 print--if you have 45 mintues to stand over it, fiddling, refeeding the paper time and time again, and praying to a Deity of your choice (and I''m not religious).

If this delicate, irritable, hypersensitive printer detects even the slightest thing it doesn''t like (even if you are fortunate enough to place the paper on the 11 x 17 line with a precision that would put a Swiss watchmaker to shame), such as having two sheets too many, or two sheets too few (it seems to prefer around 21 sheets at last count), or even looking at it in a way it deems disrespectful, you''ll get the dreading blinking yellow light from hell and a loud beep informing you that you have a "paper jam" (which you don''t). Guaranteed to have you on the edge of a cerbral infarction within 10 minutes (I should mention that I have two teenaged sons, and they seem docile and compliant compared to this printer).

Don''t get me wrong--I''ve had high-maintenance printers before, from all the major manufacturers, but this one is by far the most infuriating. Ideally you''d have to hire a full-time employee to get it to print three jobs a day. If I didn''t need it so much, I would have attached it to the back of my car and taken it for a long drive long ago.

I hope this will keep some poor soul from wasting his or her hard-earned cash on this loser. Definitely an epic failure--is there a way to rate something negative five stars?

After experience with Epson workforce 1100 printer and 7 minutes per tabloid size print in best photo mode I switched to HP 7000

Epson gave me small binding lines in every printing mode and printing sometimes 50 or more tabloid size prints with 7 minutes printing time simply is not what I can do.

With Office jet 7000 speed and print quality is great in best mode. In normal gives you some kind of reverse banding with overlapping ink creating regular darker lines.(experience with 5 of them) But best mode is fairly fast and nice quality.

THE BIG PROBLEM OF THIS PRINTER IS PAPER HANDLING. If you print on letter size text paper or even 80# postcard / cover paper the printer is ejecting the pieces mostly in normal fashion. The best part comes when you are trying to print on Tabloid size paper or better Glossy Tabloid size paper. Printer is not able to eject the heavy piece of paper after finishing of the print.

The small tiny metal rollers located on exit side of the printer (just after the space where the print head is moving) have no grip on #100 heavy paper (and "0" grip on glossy heavy paper) and are just sliding on the surface.

In effect if you do not remove the piece in the right moment the printer is sucking the paper back / sideways pressing on the edge of the next coming piece of paper and damaging the edge. After you remove the paper Next print is just about 2" piece of image ( wasted piece of paper) THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE WITH 5 pieces of this OfficeJet 7000. Since I had the warranty from Office Max having problem I simply replaced the printer. The last one I replaced had IDENTICAL HANDLING PAPER STYLE / ISSUES like the new one I brought home.

I called the HP support and after 2 days of disconnected phones and learning how to understand people in India finally I was taking to somebody who promised to send me REFURBISHED REPLACEMENT. I declined since it doesn''t solve the issue. Exactly same printer with exactly same paper handling mechanism is going give me exactly same problem.

Few days ago to my amazement I got another call from HP where nice girl (without Indian Accent) offered to send me as replacement

hp Photosmart B8550 photo printer. I checked this new printer on display in local Microcenter and it has exactly same paper handling mechanism. (This is just better version of the 7000 model) So I am going decline. This is going be same story new printer same paper handling problem.

Since there is no other comparable printer with 4 inks tabloid size on the market I think I am going try to glue to the tiny metal wheels some TINE PIECES OF STYREFOAM covered in rubber glue. It should increase the grip and hopefully solve the problem.

Is quite apparent that HP never actually fully tested their product before releasing. They should replace the metal wheels with rubber rollers.
