Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy (S041376) Save 27% off

Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy, 8.3'' x32'' Roll,
  • High-gloss, bright white, resin coated photo paper
  • Print high quality photos for glass frames and photo albums
  • Smudge and water-resistant quick dry surface
  • Look and feel of traditional photographs
  • 8.3"x32'' Roll Paper

This paper produces photos just like the sheet version but it doesn''t seem to have the same curl problem that Epson''s S041302 4"x26'' roll paper has. I''ve never used the narrower paper but judging from the reviews left for it, it is almost impossible to get the curl out. I wouldn''t have said that about this paper. I love it. My only comment is to always practice on other, cheaper paper until you are sure you have what you want since this paper costs about double (per square inch) that of sheet paper. My printer will handle a printout up to 23" long.

I shoot using a Canon 20D and print on an Epson Stylus Photo R1800 Inkjet Printer. Taking these facts into consideration helps determine the best paper for my uses. Because I shoot with the 20D, my images come out to be perfect for 4x6 or 8X12 images. Unless I want to crop my images, there are no Epson papers for my printer that will reasonably meet my needs besides the roll paper. If I wanted to conform to traditional sizes, the Epson borderless 8x10 photo paper is the equivalent choice, or if a white border is needed, the Epson 8.5x11 photo paper) will work as well. Conforming to an 8x10 format is not necessary as the digital revolution is changing the available options. I can easily frame my images in a standard 8x12 frame, or mat to fit a 12x16 or for greater effect a 16x20 frame.

At 8x12, the curling is less of an issue, as this size photo lends itself to being framed. The high-gloss, bright white, resin coated photo paper is rated to last 104 years on the R1800/R800, 85 years on the 2200, or 23 years on the R200,R300,R320,RX500, and RX600 printers. The amount of time a print lasts is just as much about the quality of the ink as it is the quality of the paper. Being a smudge and water-resistant quick dry surface, the paper is easy to work with. Plus by using a roll, I have the option of printing panoramic images.

On a per image cost basis, the expense of using the roll is about the same cost of using the sheet paper. I can easily get 30 8x12 images out of the roll. At the current $32.99 price, this gives me a $1.10 per image cost. The sheet paper runs just about as much unless you are buying 50 sheets at a time, then the price is double. For me, the versatility and the fact I don''t have to crop my images makes the expense worth it.

PROS:

Doesn''t force me to use an 8x10 format

Smudge and water-resistant quick dry surface

Prints high quality long lasting photos for framing

CONS:

Should cost less per image than sheet paper

Roll paper costs twice as much as the equivalent amount of sheet paper. However, if you''re printing a panorama, you don''t have much choice. I''ve used this Epson roll paper to print panoramas that were 8" tall and 5 feet wide with great looking results.

Want Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy (S041376) Discount?

Great Epson quality paper for glossy photos, but particularly for creating panorama prints on Epson printers with that feature. Just select "user defined" under print size and you can print up to 48" wide. Panorama software to paste together side by side pictures is readily available. Roll paper makes the panorama print possible.

The only down side is the 8.3" height, in lieu of the standard 8.5"

The only way to print a panorama! The paper does want ot roll back up after it prints so I roll it out on my proofing table and weight the ends. After a couple of days its ready for matting and framing.

We have a lot of thermal printers around the workplace and I was expecting something like that. Perhaps it was my own fault for not investigating enough before making the purchase, but I was astounded when we received the printer and it would not take the label rolls that our other printers use. Eventually I found the re-fillable rolls, which helps on the cost. The printer itself works perfectly and set up easily. Just make sure you know what you''re getting before you buy.

I''ve had this printer for a whole 10 hours, and only printed about 5-6 pages so far, but it''s awesome! Setup on my Mac was a breeze. Hooked the printer up to the network and immediately got an IP with DHCP. I then attempted to use the standard PCL driver with a standard JetDirect port on my Mac running OSx 10.6.. but don''t do this.. it seems that printing a single page will cause the printer to just print a blank page... and then another one.. and then..won''t stop :P. Ohwell.. After loading the proper drivers, Mac nicely finds the printer over bonjour and automagically sets it up as a printer and scanner (whoo hoo).

The Ups:

Fast printing -From deep sleep to wake up it takes about 20 seconds to get the first page out (pretty darn decent for a printer under 200 bucks)

Energy saving -in deep sleep it consumes less than a watt

Solid drivers/software that doesn''t get in the way.. for mac at least (not sure about windows)

Painless duplex printing

Copying without the need of a computer

Super light (25 lbs?) and small footprint

Toner cartridges that don''t cost an arm and a leg

A button on the printer that stops the current print job (AND actually works.. unlike some lexmark and hp printers I''ve encountered which cancel jobs that HAVEN''T been started yet.. ugh.)

The Downs:

Automatic document feeding can''t scan double sided... but kind of expected, although.. you can tell it to scan a stack of (one-sided) documents and print double-sided documents

The scanner lid seems to be spring-loaded, so be gentle when closing the flatbed scanner

The scanner lid only opens 45 degrees not 90 degrees... maybe this is normal.. but my xerox copier goes all the way up.. ohwell)

-Getting this printer to work in Linux (ubuntu 11.04) was a little painful-had to install the cups and lpr driver from the website.. but it''s decently document on Brother''s website, so check it out (hint: even though ubuntu "recommends" using the 7045 driver, dont.. use 7065dn.. using the 7045 will just send the printer data, and then the printer will just go back to sleep without printing anything).

So even with all the things that I don''t like about the printer, I still highly recommend the printer, given the price and how many features brother packed into this model. I would totally recommend this printer to anyone in the need of b/w network printer.

EDIT: 7/31/2011--

The printer doesn''t seem to have airprint support (yet), so those of you who want to print directly from you iphone/ipad/iwhatever.. sorry -it won''t work out of the box.. you''ll probably need to setup a print server. I''ll probably try doing this on a dd-wrt instance. Also, I tried using the Brother iPrint&Scan app on my iPhone, but it didn''t work with this printer.. ohwell.

EDIT: 9/30/2011 @ 5:05pm--

According to the handy-dandy printer statistics webpage built into the printer, I''ve printed 442 pages so far, and the printer is telling me that I''m running low on toner. I''m using the toner that came with the printer, (TN420) which is advertised to last about 1200 pages. I don''t believe that I''ve printed any images or anything that requires a ton of toner, so I''m a bit confused on why I''m low on toner. Still-Printer/scanner is great.. maybe just a defective toner unit that got shipped with the printer?

EDIT: 9/30/2011 @ 5:13pm --

I found this "toner save" option in the web interface, so I enabled it. (Oops-forgot about that. Printed out a page and in my opinion, it looks the same as when the "toner save" option was disabled. Hopefully I''ll get better performance out of toner cartridges now.

EDIT: 10/19/2012:

Yep, printer is still running strong.. by the way, numerous people have commented that the toner included with the printer is a ''starter toner''. So if you buy this printer, you''ll probably want to purchase a Brother TN420 along with this printer (or upgrade to the Brother TN450, if you''re looking for the high yield model).

As the title suggests, I cannot believe there aren''t more reviews for this printer, good or bad.

I''ve been drinking the HP coolaid for many many years now. I don''t print much to be honest with you, but always thought that a color printer was something everybody should have in the home. I''ve owned about 4 HP multi-function printers over the years, and my last one was the worst in respect to ink. Not only were there 6 cartridges, but even printing in Black yielded a drop in the color inks! Due the infrequent usage of the printer, my inks would also "expire" so that I had to replace them. All this coupled with the fact that when I did buy new ink, most of the time the cartridges (which were small in the first place), only came half full!

OK, so you didn''t come here to read about my issues with HP, although I think most people can empathize!

So, in looking for another printer, I looked for the following:

Scanner

Printer (Laser)

Networked (Wireless or Hardwired)

Reasonable Price (under $300)

Not an HP!

What I got in the main, exceeded my expectations. Granted I only got this today, but from unpacking to printing the first page, was an absolute breeze. It''s a lot smaller and lighter than I was expecting but quite a bit taller than my HP all-in-one.

I have multiple Windows machines (no Mac or Linux to test with right now) on my network, and each one picked up the printer during driver install first time. I downloaded the drivers directly from Brother so I had the latest ones, and I also ensured that after everything was running, I updated the firmware of the printer too. All this was done with ease.

The print quality is as you would expect from a laser printer, very clean and sharp. I especially like the duplex feature which allows printing on both sides. I even tried the multiple pages on one (4 to 1 in this instance with duplex), and it downsized the PDF file whilst keeping it still pretty readable. The warm up from sleep to print was pretty quick. I would say less than 10 seconds.

The build quality is pretty good. It''s not as solid as an Enterprise type laser printer, but what do you expect for $179!? I was a little worried about the scan cover only lifting 45 degrees (as mentioned in the first review), but it lifts way more than that (probably about 65 degrees), plus it has a vertical lift on the hinges so you can scan thick books etc. which is nice. I do agree with the other review, the spring loaded lid is brutal, so you need to be careful when lifting the lid, otherwise you could damage the hinges.

However, with that said, the scanning feature is not quite as nice as the HP one. I need to play with it a bit more, but there doesn''t appear to be a preview feature, and if you scan multiple pictures it doesn''t allow you create multiple files (because there is no preview feature).

All-in-all though, with the fact that you get a starter cartridge that will last quite a while (with no expiry!), this printer is an absolute bargain for $170. Given I would have had to replace my HP cartridges anyway, which would have been $70, you can understand why this is, in the long run, a very cost effective printer. With high yield toner cartridges that print about 2500 pages for $50, I can''t see me ever going back to an Inkjet.

In conclusion, don''t be put off by the Brother brand and their relative obscurity compared to HP, they''ve been around for a long time.

I''m dinging the product 1 star because of the lack of preview and multi-image in the scanning software, and the spring loaded lid. I''m hoping there is an alternative/remedy to this. But for that, it would be five stars.

Pros

Great printer, especially with duplex, and n to 1 printing

Fast print speed and nice quality

Scan and copy multiple documents using the auto feeder

Long lasting, non expiring toner cartridge (700 pages from the free one!)

Enclosed paper tray with pretty good capacity (250 sheets)

No large output tray sitting on the side of printer, output is almost enclosed in the middle of the printer

Not an HP! :)

Cons

Scanner software doesn''t have preview or the ability produce multiple images at once (that I can tell)

Brutal spring loaded scan cover

Not color (but wasn''t a requirement for me anyway)

No wireless (again not a big deal, but might be for some)

UPDATE (08/07/2011): I''ve found the preview feature! As I''m a bit of a computer geek, I generally switch software to "Advanced Mode" to gain more control over it. It seems this mode doesn''t show you previews which is a bit odd. However, by selecting "Home Mode", the preview is there. Granted the multi-image scan is still not there, but it''s still an improvement. FYI, the mode can be found under Configuration > Mode Select.

UPDATE (04/04/2012): So, just to let people know that I''ve had the printer for about 7 months, and just today, after printing 311 pages with the STARTER toner cartridge (with Toner Save OFF) that ships free with the unit, I got my first warning that the toner was low. Almost certainly if I had still had my HP printer, I would have gone through at least 2 or 3 of the colors, and the other ones would have probably expired and needed replacing, costing me about $10+ per cartridge. I am still incredibly happy with the print quality and the print options. It''s still lacking the killer option of multiple separate photo scans in a single pass, but frankly I''ve not had a lot of photos to scan in recent months, so do not miss it currently! Lastly, with the price drop to $129 (which it had been down to recently), it''s even more of a bargain than it was when I bought it.

With great sadness, I retired my HP LaserJet 5p after 17 years of great service. It finally died. I had fun taking it apart, but that''s another story. I was always happy with that printer, and the service I got from HP when I bought it was terrific. So my first choice was another HP Laser. I had a terrible Brother Laser printer prior to the HP. Plus, the HP never needs a drum replacement (the Brother''s drum is slated to last only 12,000 pages.)

However, I had heard recently from multiple sources that in recent years, HP had gone downhill in quality and service. And the reviews I read (and I read hundreds of them) overall gave better scores to Brother Lasers, which usually cost less than HP. So after weeks of research, I bought the DCP-7065 for only $179. The price dropped to $129 3 weeks later what a great deal! Now it is back to $156. Watch for sales!

Here is my review after owning this for almost a month.

Installation

It''s my first networked printer, and I was nervous. In about an hour, I unpacked it, set it up, followed the Quick Start instructions, and installed it on 1 desktop (vista) and 2 laptops (xp-pro). Success!

The only problems I encountered were needing to install the scanner software twice on the desktop, and the scanner software not installing on the laptops. I didn''t re-try when it failed on the laptops. Since I won''t scan from the laptops (only my desktop), it was a non issue to me. If I ever need to, I will try again to install it on the laptops. Since it installed on the second try after a re-boot on my desktop, I assume the same will be true for the laptops.

Now I can sit in bed on the first floor and print on the second floor. No more running out to the inkjet, connecting it to the laptop via USB, printing, disconnecting and returning to the living room or bedroom. Hooray.

Another note I have not downloaded the latest drivers and firmware yet (as other reviewers suggested), just used what was on the CD. I should, and will eventually, but so far it prints just fine.

Print Quality & Speed

It''s a Laser. Therefore, it has great print quality on the best setting. Eyeball test only I didn''t look with a magnifying glass or anything. With as cheap as toner is (even more so if you buy aftermarket toner cartridges), I am not going to use toner-save mode.

I printed a photograph, and it was OK, nothing special. I mean, this printer is not for photographs, but it will render graphics in black & white docs decently, not great. It is NOT a photo printer. Print your photos at Wal-Mart or some place like that. They will look great and be cheaper than printing at home, anyway.)

Speed? It is FAST! Love it!

Wireless connectivity

I had no problems connecting this through my router following the Quick Start Instructions, and all of our laptops can now print from anywhere in the house. This is my favorite thing about this printer.

I don''t know why anyone would need wi-fi instead of Ethernet, UNLESS you can''t physically place your printer near your router (it needs a CAT5 cable from the printer to the router). That is the only time that the Ethernet connection to a router would not suffice. Personally, I would not spend the extra money for 802.11 wi-fi (the MFC-7860 costs about $100 more than this printer ($180 vs. $280 at the time I purchased). Note the HL-5370DW ($180) is wireless, but does NOT have a copier/scanner, and also has lower ratings. For comparison purposes, HP has a wireless all-in-one laser printer with decent ratings, m1217nfw, for about $225.)

Duplexing

I don''t know how often I will use it, but it was easy to use and very fast. Very cool. I like it. I have not tried booklet printing yet.

Noise

Yes, it has a cooling fan that makes some noise. So what? All printers make noise. It didn''t seem any louder to me than any other printer. I didn''t even notice the fan was running until it cut off. It''s not a big deal to me, anyway, as it is in my office, not my bedroom. My HP DeskJet 6940 at work is much louder while printing (but since there is no cooling fan it makes zero noise after finishing.

Energy

Like some other reviewers said, it made my lights flicker when waking up from deep sleep mode. As long as it doesn''t blow a fuse, that is a minor annoyance that does not bother me much. Most of the time I am not in the same room as the printer anyway, since 90% of my printing is done from my laptop wirelessly. I chose to not hook it up via the same surge protector the computer was on. Straight to the wall instead. My house is only 20 years old, so I don''t have ancient wiring. This might be an issue for some people but not for me.

Some people like that the printer has an on/off switch. But since it goes into deep sleep mode when not in use, you will probably never turn the printer off (except for vacations). If you did turn it off, and you are printing wirelessly, you would need to go to the printer and turn it on before printing wirelessly defeating the purpose of a wireless printer!

Copying

I really like using the auto-feeder to make copies of multiple pages; what a time saver. Our all-in-one inkjet is just a flatbed, so you have to do one page at a time.

I wish there was a 1-button copy function. You have to hit a few buttons to get a photo-copy. It is a minor annoyance. Also, the settings are not easy to navigate, so you can end up wasting time and paper because a copy comes out too dark or too light. I''m not crazy about it as a copier, except for the ADF.

Is there a difference in copy quality between the flatbed and ADF? I can''t tell.

Scanning

As other Brother reviewers have mentioned, the scanner cover''s springs are tight, and if you are not careful, the cover will snap down hard, possibly breaking it sooner rather than later. I recommend using both hands to insure it closes gently.

Scanning photos I have not tried this yet (will update later)

OCR

This is a mixed bag. On the one hand, scanning in a 5 page document through the auto-feeder and having the OCR software scan it was fast and easy. A process that would have taken me more than 5 minutes on our Canon inkjet all-in-one took maybe 30 seconds on the Brother 7065.

Unfortunately, I HATE the included OCR software itself. It is really bad. It rendered almost every capital "I" as the number "1" and had many other errors as well. It does not give you the option to correct anything on the fly like OmniPage does. So the time saved on scanning was lost on manually finding and correcting errors. I will try installing OmniPage Pro 10, which I already own, and see if that works with this scanner. I do a lot of OCR scanning, so this is a real inconvenience for me. I am really hating this aspect so far.

Auto-document feeder.

Wonderful. Fast. So much better than a flatbed scanner. I like that the lid of the ADF can be closed when not in use, so it looks neater and doesn''t collect dust inside the feeder.

Toner & Drum Costs

I have not replaced the toner yet. I plan on buying compatible toner, which (almost always) worked fine with my HP. If I encounter any issues, I will come back and update this review. Even buying Brother brand toner, it will be cheaper than HP brand toner. But since there are plenty of generic toner sellers for both brands, I think this should be a wash. A genuine TN450 cartridge is about $42, and generic toner cartridges are between $15-20 on Amazon via many vendors.

If you plan on printing lots of pages (say, over 500 pages per month), consider buying an HP. The drum for the Brother needs to be replaced at 12,000 pages. The Brother brand drum is about $100, but the off-brand is about $30. I expect to go for several years before I need to replace the drum.

This printer comes with a TN420 cartridge (supposed to print 1200 pages). But alas, it is not filled all the way. It is a starter cartridge, and I got "toner low" messages after fewer than 500 pages.

It will give a "replace toner" message and stop printing, even though there is still toner in the cartridge. Apparently, all Brother Laser printers do this. See reviews of other printers they all have a convoluted work-around, but it is not easy to find it. See page 30 of the "Basic User''s Guide" to find out how to defeat the message and enable you to keep on printing until the toner is really gone. I could not find these instructions anywhere online at Brother''s web site, and since this is a newer printer, couldn''t find it via Google either. Brother''s web site simply says you should buy a new toner cartridge, and it has to be a genuine Brother cartridge.

UPDATE ON TONER (12/14/2011) I bought 2 generic replacement toner cartridges for about $13 each online via Amazon. The first leaked toner everywhere a complete mess. I got my money back from Amazon. The second one works fine. They are way cheaper than the Brother toner (which of course, is more reliable, if you want to spend the money.)

Update #2 on toner (8/6/2012)

I bought generic replacement toner from a different vendor, and this time it worked just fine. If you need to print something really nice, buy Brother toner. Otherwise, generic should be fine.

Build & other miscellaneous stuff

I like that the paper is enclosed in a drawer. I always hated the "paper stands up in the back of the printer" style that Canon and other companies use. Also, many HPs have the paper on the bottom in an open tray. I like the closed tray.

It comes with 32MB of RAM. That is great for a printer at this price point.

One annoyance you have to look at the LCD panel at just the right angle or you can''t read anything. Not a huge problem, but annoying.

Missing Cables True, it does not include a USB or Ethernet cable. But by 2011 everyone should have several of them somewhere in the house. If Brother included cables, the printer would cost more, and most of us don''t need them. This was not a negative for me. I would rather pay $5 less for the printer and use my own cable.

Documentation

The Quick Start guide was great. I like that it used real words. In proper English. Sometimes you get those assembly instructions with crudely drawn pictures and text that was written by some guy in China with a dictionary.

The printed "Basic User''s Guide" that comes with it does not include instructions about copy settings, duplex operation, scanning, and some other features. The same guide is used for the DCP-7060D, DCP-7065DN, and the HL2280DW). The full manual is on the disk that comes with the printer, and also online.

Tech Support

I have read good and bad comments about calling Tech Support. I have not had to call yet so I can''t comment. I did call to ask about the differences between the printer models, and after a brief hold period, was given accurate information by someone who spoke English.

Manual Paper Feed (Printing Envelopes, Labels, Card Stock and other stuff)

One thing I do NOT like is that you can only feed 1 piece of paper, envelope, etc. at a time in the manual feed slot. My 17-year-old HP LaserJet allowed you to stack a good amount of paper or envelopes in the manual feed slot.

Card Stock You can open the back door of the printer (called the rear output tray) so that it has a straight paper path. A working straight paper path is important for card stock and envelopes. If the back of your printer is not easily accessible, this will be a hassle. A few times it didn''t recognize that the card stock was in the manual feed slot just make sure you push it in straight and snug. It printed fine from the slot to the open back.

Update 9-19-12 After having printed more on card stock, I am not thrilled with the print quality on card stock. Not as clear as on thinner media. If that is a big deal for you, you might want to think about another printer.

Caution! don''t forget to close the back door when you are done with the straight paper path printing! I did and printed about 50 pages that fell all over the floor behind the printer! Not Brother''s fault definitely user error!

Envelopes UPDATE 12/14/11 Envelopes work just fine, although you can only feed one at a time. It did not make the adhesive stick, and it did not wrinkle the envelope like my HP did.

CD Labels UPDATE 12/14/11 Worked just fine. Again, you can only feed one at a time, but that is all I need to do.

Avery Labels UPDATE 12/14/11 Worked just fine. It didn''t peel them off, and it printed clearly. No problems at all. As with the other manual feeds, you can only feed one sheet at a time, but that is all I need to do.

Conclusion

This is the exact same machine as the MFC-7460DN except for the fax. I called Brother and they verified that is true. They had to put me on hold to find out, but they were friendly and helpful. If you don''t need a fax machine, this will save you about $70. $180 vs. $250. In the past, when I have needed to fax something, I have scanned the doc to a PDF and emailed it most of the time you can do that instead of a fax.

It''s hard to go wrong on a laser printer for $180 (currently $130 on sale at the time I am writing this) that prints and copies over 20 pages a minute, scans quickly, networks, duplexes, has an auto doc feeder, and has 32MB of RAM. Plus it has great reviews, just like the 7460DN.

If you need to print thousands of pages, get an HP, or one of the Brothers that has a 25K drum. If you absolutely must have a fax, this is not for you. If you need wi-fi instead of Ethernet wireless, move up to the 7860DW or check out the HP m1217nfw or M1536dnf which are both cheaper than the 7860. But for home or small office, this is a great buy (assuming that it lasts and doesn''t break down time will tell).

I love this printer, for the most part. I am only giving 4 stars instead of 5 because of the copying and scanning, and the hassle with the "low toner" messages. If Brother would fix those 2 things, I would give this 6 stars, if it were possible!

My only other concern is how long will this thing last? I don''t expect to get 17 years like my HP LaserJet 5P, but I want it to last a lot longer than the 1-2 years we''ve gotten out of every inkjet printer we''ve owned. Good luck!

Want Brother Printer DCP7065DN Monochrome Laser Multi-Function Copier Discount?

I was a long time HP printer advocate, but they''ve gone downhill -their software is truly horrible and the hardware remains expensive.

I''ve now switched our family and business over to Brother printers and they''re fantastic (we own 4 different ones). The 7065 has excellent print quality, duplex printing (a must have feature for me) and very nice scanning (fast too). The only thing I would like to see them improve would be to add support for scanning 2-sided originals. I had to write my own script to combine 2 separate scans, reversing pages and interleaving them to get the sides in the correct order.

OEM toner cartridges are reasonably priced and you can get 3rd party clones very cheaply. Please note that this model does not include FAX capability, I didn''t need it, but many people assume it is included.

Updated -I forgot to mention that the printer has very good Mac support, including the latest release Lion and great network printing support.

Ordered from Amazon at super-cheap price, including shipping. Easy to install, works perfectly. Love the duplex printing and scanning. Yeah, you have to flip your stack over to scan duplex who cares? I''m sure it makes the mechanism simpler and less likely to break, and it''s virtually no trouble to me. Comes with Paper Port, which I adore. OEM cartriges reasonably priced. Brother Black High Yield Toner Cartridge (TN450) I''m a happy camper!

Edited to add a couple of caveats and a slightly lower rating.

Price shop! The Amazon price as I type this is significantly more than I paid, and I saw this printer recently in a brick-and-mortar store for significantly less than I paid.

I had a heck of a time when I replaced the cartridge with an OEM, I might add.

It didn''t want to reset the page counter, or toner sensor, or whatever tells it there''s a new cartridge, and I had to turn off cartridge sensing to get it to print. I saw no reason for this to happen with an OEM cartridge, so I spent a significant amount of time with customer service, repeatedly following the steps I had already followed (and I told them so), and being forced to provide my name, address, and phone number, only to be finally provided a 15-second fix consisting of a series of door openings and button pressings, information that they apparently guard like Fort Knox as they refused to give it to me via web chat I had to call on the phone and jump through their hoops all over again.

I don''t have the secret combination with me right now, but I do have it and I''m going to post it here. I''m also going to try to find out the meaning of the other codes (my code was #12) and disseminate them stuff like this annoys me.

The hoops I had to jump through with the OEM cartridge is the reason I lowered the rating to four stars those people took up many dollars worth of my time when they could have just ascertained I had an OEM cartridge (they asked me for the serial number at least three times) and given me the code. The printer has been functioning very nicely, but the experience I went through with customer service is downright unbelievable, especially considering it concerned an *OEM* cartridge that the printer refused to recognize.

Here''s what you have to do to reset the page counter, or the toner sensor, or whatever makes it detect the toner:

open cover

press clear

["replace drum?" is displayed]

press start

press up arrow to #12

press OK

["accepted" is displayed]

I''d love to know what #1 through #11 do.....!

Further disappointment the high-yield toner says it should be good for 2,600 copies. My page count shows 1,500 don''t know if that''s for just the new cartridge or includes the starter as well, but in either case it is not good that it''s already showing I should order another cartridge! The heck with it I''m getting a non-OEM this time. Compatible Brother TN450 Toner Cartridge for Brother MFC 7360N 7460DN 7860DW / HL 2220 2230 2240 2240D 2270DW 2280DW Printers Black This one has only one review, but it''s by a real-name, Amazon-verified purchaser with a lot of other reviews, so I thought it was the best choice of what was available. (Update: It has a lot more reviews now, including mine the reviews are mixed, but my experience has been great. I buy mine from Linkyo apparently it makes a difference.)

It''s too bad for Brother I probably would have stuck with the OEM cartridges for longer if I hadn''t had the annoyance and if the high-yield cartridge hadn''t said I had to order another less than two weeks after being installed.....

Adding a couple more caveats.

The OEM, supposedly high-yield cartridge is used up, much sooner than I had expected. I''m not sure it lasted even as long as the starter cartridge. The non-OEM I just put in, link above, seems to work just fine so far.

Try to think before you hit print, which I''m having trouble learning to do it remembers your last number of prints (haven''t found a way to stop it from doing that and reset to one), and I''ve lately spent a lot of time lunging for the "stop" button when I wanted one and it printed 14.

LD Glossy Inkjet Photo Sticker Paper (8.5""X11"") 100 pack Save 3% off

LD Glossy Inkjet Photo Sticker Paper 100 pack
  • Great for printing anything you''d like to see on a sticker
  • Glossy photo paper is specially designed to instantly dry with a high resolution pictures
  • LD paper is Water Resistant, protecting your stickers for a longer-lasting life-span
  • Photo glossy paper is universally coated to use with most inkjet printers in the market today
  • Can use the whole sheet as one large sticker

Not a bad product for the price I was worried buying from a 3rd party retailer, but it''s certainly more worthwhile than the big guy''s 5 sheet packs.

Nice, glossy finish on one side, colors print out nicely on my Canon MX700 Inkjet, no issues with ink smudging, comes out dry right away.

It''s possible to scratch, but only if you scratch it really hard in general, if you''re interested in making stickers that you want to more long lasting (and this applies to all sticker paper, regardless of brand), get a bottle of Krylon Crystal Clear Clearcoat spray and give the stickers a good cover of that, and your stickers will last a long time, including water-resistance.

The sticker aspect of it does its job, holds the sticker well in place though the adhesive isn''t extremely strong like a real sticker would be, meaning that it''s easy to peel off and comes off clean. However, I don''t expect it to come off on its own indoors. (though I would imagine outdoors it would be another story).

All in all a good purchase.

I bought this paper to make customized labels to wrap over Hershey''s Miniatures for wedding favors. I could have used plain paper or even high-resolution paper but I really wanted glossy in order to make them look more like real candy bars. This paper worked perfectly; I''ve yet to see a smudge or scratch so maybe that has something to do with the type of printer, not the paper. I use a Canon and printed on standard settings, not even high quality or photo setting. I am perfectly pleased with the quality of the printing; the colors on some of my labels weren''t quite what I expected based on what the monitor showed but we all know that what you see on the monitor is not always what you get in print. The bride will be thrilled with how this paper looks as part of her wedding favors and I like how inexpensive it was, how easily it peels off its backing, and how well it''s sticking to the candy bars. I''ll probably use all this package for the favors and buy another just to have on hand for everyday stuff. S&H were fairly priced and product was received in a reasonable amount of time. Only wish I could buy this stuff in my local stores. Thanks!

I got a pack of this and we''ve loved it. Next thing I knew we ran out, and I''m back for some more. I''m using an Epson, and although I haven''t done any scratch and sniff stickers I sure haven''t noticed the ink scratching off. If this wasn''t available I wouldn''t buy sticker paper because everything else I''ve found is sickeningly expensive. ($1 a sheet or more) Just get this for less than 20 cents a sheet and you''ll be glad you did. Enjoy!

Updated Review: I''ve been using this paper for over a year now (it''s 1/31/12 today) and after multiple orders I''ve come to see why everyone complains so much about it. Sometimes I get a good quality pack, and others not...I''ve returned 2 packages to Amazon already. I''m now using a Canon MP560 printer and originally had no issues. But on more recent orders with this paper, the ink/paper starts to skip spots randomly. Leaving white speckles where the ink doesn''t take to the paper. I''ve wasted so much time and money trying to print clean pictures. Additionally, with this paper it''s impossible to print borderless, the ink starts to fade all along the edges. And I have noticed that my paper has yellowed on the newer packs I had ordered, my older paper still no yellowing. So sure it''s a good deal for 100 sheets/$18.99...but I need it for my business, every wasted sheet costs me money. Because it''s not reliable, it''s just not worth it. Also, a note on shipping..Aside for the two packs I returned, I kept 2 in which the corners were completely crushed in..and one pack had been opened already..with part of the sheets having a bend through out about 25 sheets.

Original Review:

I was originally unsure about purchasing because of some of the bad reviews. But, this paper has great quality, and you can''t beat the price. I printed on HP Photosmart D7260 printer with HP Vivera inks. NO SMEARING. I used cheap inks years ago and always experience random spots and smears, if your printing custom jobs..trust me spend the extra money and get good quality ink. The paper is thin (not as thick as photo paper) and has a nice gloss finish. It came with in a few days and very well packaged in a box (no worries about being bent) in the mailbox). I will repurchase this again! Very happy customer.

I''m a graphic designer currently doing commercial as well as "cute design" (for baby showers, christenings, baby arrival, etc...). I''ve tried different papers and this is my final choice. I gave it 4 stars, instead of 5, because the other day I printed out a few sheets, and when I was cutting my stickers I said something and yeah... a drop of spit fell on my sticker and it smudged not only on the spot, but some space around it (I thought my pages were dry after 5 minutes, but it seems they weren''t). ALSO... you may lose some small detail.

MY RECOMMENDATIONS:

Let it dry very well before speaking near your print-outs or wear a surgeon mask. =D

Also, be careful with small areas of color over large areas of color (eyes, using a light font over a background of color... you may lose that kind of detail)

Keep your printer in good shape.

MY PRINTER: CANON PIXMA IP 4700

MY SOFTWARE: Illustrator CS4

MY PRINTING SETUP: Photo Glossy Paper, Standard quality (not the highest)...

My stickers look great and my clients love them... I''m very pleased with my results!

For the record: I wish I could have give it 4.85 stars =)

Canon PIXMA MP495 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One (4499B026)

  • Includes pack of PP201
  • HD Movie Print Software
  • Borderless 4 x 6 photo
  • 4800 x 12000 DPI

The PIXMA MP495 is a fine printer with all-in-one features and WiFi capabilities. The driver and software installation, however, did not go so smoothly (Windows 7 x64). I can''t imagine a layman going through the difficulty I went through getting WiFi working with this printer. But once it''s configured, it works quite well.

Document Printing:

Funny enough, this is probably the least interesting part of the all-in-one. There''s not much that can be said in this category. The MP495 is a very competent document printer with all the features you''d find in any inkjet printer. Paper loads from the back, so it''s a bit more intuitive which side of the paper will be printed on, but it also means you need more space heightwise.

Photo Printing:

As a photo printer, the MP495 is both fast and high quality. I found that the supplied ''Photo Paper Plus Glossy II'' sample paper outperformed some HP photo paper I had. And the MP495 outperformed another HP photosmart 385 printer I have in both speed and quality. So I am quite pleased with the performance here as I find this to be one of the major draws of this device. Canon claims about 86 photos from one Color ink cartridge. I have not owned the printer long enough to verify the accuracy of their claim.

Scanning:

I don''t scan very often, but it''s a very useful feature to have when you need it. In a scanner I look for speed, image quality and usable software. I''m quite pleased with the MP495''s scanner capabilities. My test involved a sheet from a notepad that had a light gray watermark-like background. The scanner picked it up no problem. From initialization to scan completion took approx. 20 seconds, which I find adequate. There''s a scan button on the printer, but pressing it doesn''t do anything if the printer is hooked up via WiFi.

WiFi:

One of the main draws of this printer is its wifi capabilities. But since the printer has no controls on the device itself for configuring the connection to your likely secured WiFi access point, it must be configured through software installed on one of the computers on the network. Configuring the WiFi was a bit tricky. After repeated failed attempts, I figured out that the trick is to plug the USB cable (which they call a WiFi configuration cable) in at precicely the right point during setup -during the detection phase. Plugging it in too soon seems to cause it to fail -and I waited the first few times too. Regardless, this will no doubt be a hurdle for novices trying to configure this printer. I suggest having a competent computer person around while configuring the WiFi connection on this printer. With that being said, not having to have the printer close enough to my computer for the USB cable to reach is fantastic.

Software:

The software is not very impressive but adequate. There''s a utility for managing your scans and OCR text conversion and all that good stuff. Canon boasts an automatic scanning feature that automatically detects the type of document being scanned. I tested it out and it seems to work well as far as being convenient. The software however lacks ability to open the file location in Explorer or even open the file using the default application. So that''s quite annoying.

Included with the software is "MyPrinter" utility that allows you to connect to the printer and configure various options. It seems like nothing more than a shortcut to the printer properties utility included with windows. There''s no options for configuring the WiFi connection in this utility. You must use the Setup program to do that -something I find rather annoying since this is something you should easily be able to access without having to pop in the driver disc or dig up the setup utility.

If you decide to go with the Easy install instead of the custom install, the setup utility will dump some annoying shortcut toolbar application called Menu something or other. I removed it right quick.

There''s also something Canon calls "Web Print Ex" which allows you to change the layout of web pages to print them out better. I didn''t test this software out.

Cost:

At around $80, half the cost of this printer is in the ink. On Amazon, the ink for this printer seems to run around $17 for Black and $18 for Color. Canon reveals the following for ink life:

Black Ink Tank Life Black: 220 pages (PG-510), 401 pages (optional PG-512)¹

Black: 2955 photos* (PG-510), 7275 photos* (optional PG-512)²

* Estimated supplemental yield

Colour Ink Tank Life Colour: 244 pages (CL-511), 349 pages (optional CL-513)¹

Colour: 83 photos (CL-511), 122 photos (optional CL-513)²

Note that I found this info on Canon''s European site. The actual cartridge models are PG-210 and CL-211.

So even with those numbers, which are probably the upper bound, you''re looking at around 19 cents per photo plus cost of paper. While the photo quality is excellent, I''ve ordered prints online for around 5 cents per photo. So the ink here is certainly expensive.

Conclusion:

Pros

Wifi

Quiet and fast scanner

High quality and fast printing

Reasonable purchase price

Cons

Expensive ink

Clunky software

Lack of LCD for independent configuration

Rating the device itself on its merits alone, I give it 4 stars. Whether that ink cost is a major deterrent to you is really up to you.

I bought this unit as my laser printer was just too much wrt toner costs. I also wanted a wireless printer to share between all my computers (PC and Mac/iphone).

It is low cost (really low cost), and the print quality (at this price point) is great.

The reason that I''m not happy with this product, like I should be is just how poorly thought out the software is. During install, you basically are going to be loading up with a number of bloatware features (trying to not install these resulted in weird artifacts/or the software you need just not installing).

Also there''s a little bubble that sit''s on your desktop really annoying. After all, I wanted a printer and a printer really should just work in the background without the need to be seen by me every time i use my computer.

Finally, the settings. The settings are crazy. First no matter what I try, I can''t get the printer to print in the proper order. Out of the box with all the defaults, I found that when I print a document it prints in reverse order. Unacceptable. Going through the settings I can''t find the setting to lock this down. So I have to remember each time that I print to ''reverse'' print order.

Also, there''s a ''silent'' feature. I haven''t a clue what this does. It does make the printer a bit more silent, but it''s not default. If there''s some software to make the printer work just as well, but with less noise shouldn''t this be default?

Again, the install was a mess. Installing across computers (PC or Mac) was not fun. The fact that the settings were/are not correct out of the box, not fun. The bloatware/and the weird bubble that shows up on my desktops really NOT fun. If the unit printed at lightening speed or completely silent, perhaps then I could overlook the poorly designed software but it doesn''t. The printer is just average.

I''m giving the OK rating because the print quality is average, the cost overall is great, and the software is poor. So it''s just so/so.

Let me jump right into this. . .

1) Wi-Fi. Nuff said! Actually I was scared at first because the unit comes with an 2nd user guide simply to troubleshoot the wi-fi. BUT. . .all you have do to is follow the instructions when running the install disc, which say (if you read them) to plug the printer in via USB cable. You must do this step before you can setup the wi-fi.

2) USB cable provided. Finally a printer that doesn''t make you buy this separately. Thank you Canon!

3) Photo printing was impressive. If you have actual photo paper vs. regular copy paper then you can get some very gorgeous pictures printed. It''s amazing how the single multi-colored cartridge can perform to this level. Not the same quality as the 5 cartridge inkjets, but comparable to my 3yr old Canon MP520

4) Good and bad of the ink cartridge it uses a single multi-color cartridge for the blue-magenta-yellow. But since you have to replace the entire cartridge when one color goes out...not sure exactly if the cost in the end will be more or less than the multi-cartridge packs. I guess it depends on how efficient the printer will be over the long run in its use of the color cartridge vs. previous models.

Replacements:

Canon PG-210 XL Cartridge (Black) = about $17

Canon CL-211 XL Cartridge (Color) = about $22

5) Scanning = disappointed. Wi-fi can communicate in two directions, but they only set this up for sending to the printer. Thus you must plug the cable in to the computer to scan. If you want more control of your scans get a real scanning software packages that will recognize the printer, because the software the printer comes with is mediocre.

**update July 2011** found you can scan wirelessly...but it was a chore for me to do and I didn''t feel the instruction manual was clear on how to make this happen.

6) Speaking of software...when you look at the feature list above on this amazon product description page, most of the highlights are actually software based. Big deal. Other than needing the drivers for the printer, most of the tasks marketed can be done better and with more features from free download-able software. Also most of the software features seem to be a shortcut to the Control Panel > Printers & Devices section of Windows, not to mention no configuring of Wi-Fi anywhere other than upon initial setup. Guess you''ll need to run the installer again to get to those features.

7) Copying is noisy, but pretty fast when doing a black & white copy. I did put a page of Consumer report in and selected the Color copy. The product images came out with good detail and the small ratings on the red bars were easy to read. Nice and clear copies!

8) Nice full black color aesthetics. My old printer (MP520) is mostly a flat grey silver, but this nice high glossy printer looks sleek.

OVERALL:

Much of the "features" highlighted are so-so software driven enhancements.

I love how it''s wireless!

I don''t see why scanning couldn''t be made wireless too, but with the right 3rd party software the quality and manipulation of the scan are good.

Only time will tell if the move to a single color cartridge will be less or more expensive.

I''m overall happy with the speed and quality.

Want Canon PIXMA MP495 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One (4499B026) Discount?

1) Choosing a printer:

Need a new printer, one to replace my HP D1660 that has been nothing but problems, you get what you pay for. Shopping around and reading consumer reviews, and Consumer Reports gave both Canon and Epson printers high marks. Cheap ink price with Canon was the selling point, see the ** at the bottom of review. While I do shop a lot for electronics online, and got most of my stuff through Amazon, Amazon did not have the lowest price for the printer, Wal Mart priced in at $59.99. For its price, even if you pay the six dollar''s more with Amazon, you still get a great deal for what this printer can do.

2) Setting up printer:

Setting up the printer was easy for me, and there are two ways to set it up to use on you Wireless Network. The faster way is using the USB cable that comes with the printer by plugging it in to your computer. When you start installing the driver for the printer, asks you if you would like to us it on WLAN Network. If you choose yes the driver install does the rest, grabbing the PSK from your computer. The other way is to much work if you ask me, and that involves WPA using thing maintenance button on the printer.

3) Using printer

Copying using the printer, while it is not the kind of copier you find in an office, it does however copy every well. The only choose you have for enlarging the document is the Fit to Page button: In my opinion that is all that is needed for home use and most office use. You can choose the number of copies to make, with the number being displayed on the LED display. A plus when copying with the printer, it auto detects the right shade level to use. Scanning with the printer, takes a bit more work when setup for Wireless use, and there are a few ways to scan documents and/or pictures. One: Is the Scan button on the Printer, (Note this feature does not work if you have the printer setup via the WLAN). Two: Using the auto scan via Canon Solution Menu EX located in the Taskbar. Three: Using scanners driver via the MP Navigator EX 4.0 and using the scanners driver you can set the scanning dpi resolution higher. Using the Auto Scan feature does yelled good scans, and the only time that I have found that I needed to use the scanners drive, was when scanning older pictures. *Note; if you using the print via the WLAN then you will need the scanning software that comes with the printer, otherwise Windows Live Photo Gallery can be used to scan. Other thing is, if you scan other things then photo then you will like the scanning software for the printer, lettered and graphic documents can be converted to PDF, which I find very handy. Printing with the printer, yields good results better than any printer I have had mostly due to the fact that page comes out evenly, and it does use about one cent extra ink. Documents that have simple graphics, printer very well under fast mode, the only time that I have a need to set it higher is when printer multi-color documents that need to have a higher dpi. Photo printing with the printer, is what makes this printer a great buy; and best thing about this printer is how photo''s come out looking like photo lab pictures. You can print with or without borders, though I find without borders to look the best. The software that comes with the printer is a bit clucky, and is unneeded if you are already using a program to organize you photo''s. If you do not do any hardcore photo editing, other than getting read of redeye, or gray scaling, then Windows Live Photo Gallery is all you need. Picasa is another great program for organize you photo''s, that does a little more; and it is free. One thing that I found with printing great looking photo''s, is picking the right kind of photo paper, and using the right photo print settings. I use HP Glossy Premium Photo Paper, and have great results.

4) Pros:

a) Wireless printing

b) One touch Auto Scanning, (does not work when printer is setup on a WLAN Network.

c) Photo Printing

d) iPhone and Android printing by way of a printer app for the phones.

e) Cheap in price, but not in quality, $59.99 at Wal Mart.

f) *Low ink indicator LED for both color and black ink on printer.

g) **Low ink cost.

h) WPA and WPA2 and 802.11b/g/n

5) Cons:

a) Auto Scan via the printer does not work when printer is setup to work on WLAN.

b) Clunky software for photo printing and scanning.

c) ***Ink not refillable.

d) Scanning default set at 300dpi.

6) Overview:

When shopping around for a printer, found that Canon printers had happy users, and for the price this one is a must have if you looking for a multifunction (printer, scanner and copier). Even if you are in the market for just a printer, go ahead and get this one; you will not be disappointed.

* The My Printer program can also be used to indicate when ink is low, but the indicator LED''s means one less program needs to be installed.

** Amazon has the Black PG-210XL at $16.99 and the CL-211XL at 21.99. Wal Marts price is $21.98 for the PG-210XL, and for the CL-211XL $28.84. Plus with Amazon the shipping for ink is free, and there is no tax.

*** Due to the ink level indicator of the ink cartridge of this type being unable to be rest, there is a high defect rate of refilled PG-210 and CL-211. However the cartridges can still be recycled at your local printer ink store.

I am a homeschooling mother of 3, and I print a lot! I decided when my Lexmark printer (was a gift) ran out of black ink I would buy a new printer because Lexmark ink is too expensive and runs out too quickly. I decided on this printer because it got decent reviews on print quality. I''m not concerned about photo printing, because I use another service for that. I like the ease of use of this printer, and I like that it prints fairly quickly. I was a little concerned about the wireless setup because of the reviews stating it was confusing to set up. I did not find this to be the case! I found that once I unwrapped the printer, installed the ink and put the cd in the drive that the on-screen directions were PERFECT! It told me what to do and when to do it. I just installed it today, so I can''t comment on the ink life or quality over time, but the 20 pages I printed today were perfect.

EDIT: As for ink life, I print quite a bit in Black and White, and mostly I use the draft setting for the fastest print time and lowest ink consumption. I find that printing 15 30 pages per week I can get about 6 months on one black ink cartridge, which for me is great performance, and this is considering that when I use the copy function I can''t get draft settings.

After having the printer for almost a year, I began to have problems with the print quality, I contacted Canon customer support, and after some troubleshooting determined that the unit was faulty. I was shipped a new unit, which works wonderfully, and I couldn''t be happier.

HP 38 Light Gray Pigment Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging Save 24% off

HP 38 Light Gray Pigment Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging
  • Print brilliant, true-to-life photos and fine-art prints with HP''s new pigment-based Vivera inks
  • Get precision color consistency and vivid, true-to-life hues
  • Produce affordable studio-quality photos
  • Cherish long-lasting color photos that resist fading for more than 200 years
  • Replace only the cartridges that runs out among eight individual colors

As inks go, this appears to be very good stuff. In fact, they say it''s guaranteed to last 200+ years, although I''m not sure who around me will go ask for a free cartridge if my documents or photos only last 150 years. More to the point, it DOES look great.

On the other hand, these cartridges are around 30 bucks a piece and I need 8, so it rather irks me that the cartridges are so small. Perhaps that''s a comment more appropriate for a review of the printer design, but it''s worth noting here.

Also worth noting is that you SHOULD NOT immediately replace the ink cartridge in your HP B9180 when you get a message from it saying that this or that cartridge is about to run out. I say this because, when mine said that, I checked the little meter that tells you how much is left and it said 40% of the cartridge still had ink in it. 40%! To me, 40% is not "about to run out," but I did go ahead and buy an ink cartridge -I just held onto it until it really became obvious that it was no longer printing that color. Only then did I replace the cartridge, because doing otherwise is needlessly wasting money.

I''m not quite cynical enough to say that HP WANTS you to replace (and recycle) the ink cartridges prematurely, but it obviously would make them more money if you do. Just keep your eyes open and you''ll be fine.

Buy HP 38 Light Gray Pigment Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging Now

Light Grey is the most used ink in my HP B9180. This cartridge has 27ml of ink selling for 27 dollars which is not bad. Canon''s inks are around that price range as well but come in smaller 13ml tanks. Also do check the expiration date of the ink as the chip on the cartridge will yield a warning if the expiration date has been reached. So far expired inks has yield the same result as new inks with no fading for the past year.

If you are cheap like me, buy empty tanks online and refill them with HP''s 70 ink used for the Z2100 printers which comes to be $75/130ml. The HP no.70 tanks use the same inks but in a bigger tank.

The product itself is fine but the cartridge I received was a month and a half away from expiration and the price should have been drastically reduced to reflect that.

I use this PhotoSmartPro B8850 printer for fine art reproduction. HP engineers in San Diego did a great job on it. I hope HP keeps supporting it! Papers are becoming scarce. Amazon delivered on time. Product was well within expiration date. Don''t buy this ink from any seller unless they can tell you it is within expiration date, otherwise your printer will make you shut down and use ink in between each print.
