Brother TN430 Standard Yield Toner Cartridge Save 39% off

Brother TN430 Standard Yield Toner Cartridge - Retail Packaging
  • Replacement toner drum
  • Compatible with Brother HL1240 and MFC8300/8500/8600 printers
  • Yields approximately 3,000 pages
  • Quality printing on a variety of papers and stocks
  • Ships in Certified Frustration-Free Packaging

The perennial favorite Brother 1240HL works hard for the modest price that fetches one of these machines. One of the most important reasons I originally decided to purchase this machine was to escape the netherworld of inkjet cartridges. With a rating of 1.6 cents per sheet, not only do you save money in the long run but you avoid scrubbing and cleaning and cursing every three months. Being that some competitors cartridges fetch upwards of 100$ this tidy component suits me fine and often I get more than my 3000 sheet rating.

I own a Brother HL-1240, so of course I have to use this toner cartridge. But if I had a choice, I''d try someone else''s. The problem is always the same. After a few months of great printing (and, BTW, I print maybe a couple dozen sheets a week, if that), a vertical line develops down the left side of every page about three-quarters of an inch from the paper''s edge. Don''t bother with tech support. They''ll tell you to clean the corona wire and drum, which I did a million times to no avail. Eventually I gave up, went out and purchased another cartridge, and voilà, problem solved -for another couple of months anyway. And then you have to trash the old cartridge which, as you''ll be able to tell from shaking it, still has a heavy load of toner left in it. Great little printer; lousy little cartridges. Suppose that''s how they make their money, though.

This is a more expensive way of buying toner initially. But as someone whose bought off brand cartridges in past; I wouldn''t go back to that. It''s tempting to save the money up front but you lose that savings when the cartridge craps out well short of its projected output. My experience with Brother toner has been very good, and lastly they give you a prepaid Fedex return sticker that allows you to return your empty cartridge for recycling. That sticker allows you to return several Brother toner cartridges by taping the boxes together with the one box with a sticker on it. A nice touch.

This replacement toner cartridge has an excellent yield, and if you don''t print that often, a single cartridge will last quite a long time.

As with any cartridge, this is an all-in-one piece. You are required to shake the cartridge before installation and remove a couple of plastic adhesive strips attached to the cartridge before use. Installation is easy -just slide the cartridge into the opening of the printer. There is nothing to adjust.

I learned with my first replacement cartridge that these cartridges do not work well with adhesive labels. If you plan on printing a couple of sheets of adhesive labels, the rollers in the cartridge will pick up the gum from the labels, and this will reduce the resulting print quality. I could not clean the first replacement to improve quality, and therefore had to dispose of a cartridge before it was completely spent.

Otherwise, this is a quality product with a decent yield.

MC160 - Multifunction - Color - Laser - Copy/scan/print/fax
  • Fast black & white printing/copying: up to 20 ppm (up to 5 ppm color)
  • High duty cycle for greater reliability: rated at 35,000 pages per month
  • Large paper capacity: up to 700 sheets
  • Large toner capacity: up to 2,500 pages each in Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black
  • Exceptional media flexibility: accepts stock up to 110 lb. index (209 gsm)

This printer works as promised. The pages look very good on plain paper, especially the color, considering it''s plain paper. I love being able to copy to my flash drive! As a teacher, this comes in very handy, so I can present work on-screen. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the setup problems. I''ve had to call Okidata twice to help setup this printer and another one. They are very finicky on how to set up correctly, BUT, the people there are fabulous in helping. You get someone in the good ''ol USA! I''ll continue to buy their products.

Had this printer for a couple days now. Print speeds are good for home or small office use. Scanning also works fairly well. I have not tested faxing. The first dislike I have so far is that it does not have built in wifi and no support for airprint but I knew that prior to purchase. The second dislike is that it only supports a handfull of media types and I am unable to print to size 10 envelopes which means I have to keep my old HP Laserjet 5n around just so I can print envelopes. The printer is well built (heavy) and I assume will last a long time. I was very impressed with the quality of color printing which I would rate as a B+. Setup was fairly simple at under 5 minutes. I downloaded the drivers from Oki''s web site instead of from the disk but ended up loading the disk to install the Oki Scanner Utility which was not available as a download. The disk also comes with a basic Paperport software. There are several sleep mode settings but I set mine to 5 minutes which turns off the fan after 5 min and puts machine into sleep. This printer does not have a paper drawer but rather a tray you flip down and a charcoal colored dust tray clips on to the tray, not that big of a deal but some people may not care for that design. In order to do duplex printing, you must purchase the optional Tray 2. All in all it is a good home laser printer but really wish I could print #10 envelopes!

I bought this through Costco for $160, which is an amazing price for a quality multi-function laser printer. While the real price of any printer is the ongoing cost of toner, Costco''s price is about $100 less than that of comparable products (such as the Dell 1355cn, which tends to go on sale for about $250).

As others have noted, set up isn''t quite "plug and play". Rather than deal with the set up CD, I simply downloaded the latest printer, fax, and scanner drivers (i.e. software) from the OKI website. I also downloaded PDF copies of the manuals so I''d have them on my computer. But you still need to know a little bit about what you are doing to set up this system. You also still need to use the CD to install various types of software.

There are two ways to connect the printer to your computer. The first is that you can buy a USB cord and connect it directly to your computer. (Don''t spend more than a few dollars on the cord. This one will do fine: http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-Hi-Speed-USB-Cable-Feet/dp/B001MXLD4G/ref=pd_cp_e_0.) You can also connect it directly to your network with an ethernet cable (i.e. http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-7-Foot-Snagless-Molded-Patch/dp/B00000J1V5/ref=pd_cp_e_1). I used the latter method and connected the printer directly to the switch on my wireless router. Once the printer is connected via either method, other computers in the house can access it. If you use the first method, you''ll have to set up the printer as a shared printer.

Note that when you install the drivers, you''ll be asked which method you''ll use to set up the printer. You''ll also have to have the printer already connected and powered on when you install the software. The software will ask you several questions, but you don''t really need to make any other decisions; just accept the default values.

Just to be clear, this is not a wireless printer. But you can connect it, with a cord, to your computer or to your network. Then, you can connect other computers in the house to the printer wirelessly. The only reason to get a true wireless printer (i.e. one that doesn''t need a cord at all) is if you want to store the printer in a different place than your computer or router. Most people keep their printer right next to their computer and so shouldn''t be willing to spend the extra money for a true wireless printer.

I''ve had the printer for a few days now and am still learning about it. The print quality is great. I''ve scanned text (not photos) and have been quite happy with the results. Note that the default scanning resolution is quite course. You can increase the resolution and improve the scan quality. I haven''t played with the fax yet. This isn''t the right printer for you if you want to print photographs or make really high-quality scans of photos. I don''t print photos that often, and when I do, I just send them to Walgreens to be printed.

If you don''t print that often, set the power saving mode to turn off the printer after 5 minutes of use. This saves a little energy, but more importantly silences the printer.

This printer is more like the monster printer we have at the office, which is something I like about it. It will probably take me a very long time to read and fully understand everything that this printer can do, but so far I''m happy with the purchase.

Nice color print, quiet, great price at Costco with prompt shipping.

Only reason 4 stars is the fact that Win 7 drivers on install CD didn''t work...

OKI.com has all current drivers available for Win 7 and XP.

This printer interfaced with my network computers, laptops & towers, hard wired and wireless, Win 7 Pro, Win 7 Home Premium and XP Pro, with no problem, using these drivers.

The driver install will search for the printer IP address and this is used for all computers connected on your network.

Make shortcut on desktop for copy/scan functions or use printer controls.

I am not sure what the guy above was talking about this has energy saving mode so the fan does shut off you can adjust in 5min increments even the high dollar canon printer that this unit replaced. All drivers work with my win 7 x64 professional computers. Also networked flawless with my router. The print quality is so much better than any inkjet printers I have had. The only problem is trying to find the duplexer in stock online. I got mine at COSTCO they had a coupon offer and the printer only costed $160.

Kodak ESP 2170 All-in-One Printer

Kodak ESP 2170 All-in-One Printer
  • Print, Copy, Scan, Fax
  • Wireless printing
  • High-capacity paper tray
  • Auto document feeder
  • Intelligent paper sensor detects paper sizes and type

I''ve had my share of printers and right now I have three of them on my wifi and in use: Canon MP640 (very nice), HP Photosmart C7280(a pain), and an old R80 Inkjet (been on my desk in service for nearly 12 years a workhorse). The only one that compares to this new Kodak is the Canon.

The Kodak is a little bulkier, there are too many openings that do not completely close up to protect it from dust and the view screen is much too small (my only real negative) making the selection of pictures harder than it has to be. To the positive side, it only has two cartridges (black and colors) and only one paper feed for all paper types.

The Kodak setup is a piece of cake and went very smoothly. The wifi picked right up without any problems.

There isn''t much more to say. The printing quality of both the Canon and Kodak are marvelous. I was very impressed with the Kodak''s sharpness in the pictures I selected to print. I''d have to give it a 4.5 (small screen is just stupid). But I''m rounding up due to the ink system and paper feed.

****UPDATE*****09/02/2011:

It is imperative that you use the software from Kodak to install the printer. Initially, I did not and let Windows 7 find a Kodak driver for it. It worked for a while and then Windows 7 could not find the printer. I tried deleting the other printers and nothing worked. So I then installed the drivers from the CD that came with the printer. Not only did the printer install, it automatically updated the firmware of the printer from Kodak. Once everything was completed (all automatically), the printer was the default printer and everything was good with the world.

I am a longtime user of HP printers. In fact, I still have one that I love because the ink lasts forever in itand I''m a frequent user. The cost is substantial to replace so I was pleased to find this Kodak printer that claimed the lowest cost in replacement ink.

Pros:

-It prints out crisp, clean images

-It prints out photos with good clarity

-The copier works fast and cleanly

-The feed is smooth and handles most paper weights/types easily

-The printer''s ink is among the cheapest for replacement

-The wifi connection was so easy to install with my MacBook Air laptop

-The cable connection to the iMac was easy to install as well

Cons:

-The ink gets used up very quickly. Ink may be cheaper, but you''ll be buying it more frequently.

-The "intelligent" paper size sensor works well for some sizes but not others. (See below for my explanation.)

-The wifi turns off after a period of no use and in order to use it again, you have to unplug the printer then plug it back in again.

I tried to print out my sister''s wedding invitations on the printer. It was a 5.75" by 5.75" size paper and I changed all the settings on my computer that I needed to in order to print that particular size. However, the "intelligent" paper sensor insisted that I had not put in the correct size paper. It refused to recognize that paper at all and never pulled it through the feeder. It was frustrating and there was no help available with Kodak support for that question. (My HP printer did recognize the paper and allowed me to print instead.)

The wifi turning off is also a little aggravating. I can understand if it would just go into "sleep" mode but it doesn''t sense when a print job is in queue. You should be able to press the on/off button to get it running again, however, not even that works. I find I have to disconnect the printer from the wall socket in order to resume the wifi use.

Overall, it is a great start for Kodak. The printer leaves a fairly small footprint on my desk and is quieter than many other printers. It is very easy to set up with Macs (which is always a plus for our family!)

*********UPDATE*****************

Since posting my review, I have discovered one other issue that (for us) is a deal breaker. Every time I turn on my computer to print, there is another Kodak update for the printer. When I click on it, it basically reinstalls the printer. I do not know what the "update" is. So we have decided to use this printer as a backup only and have gone back to using our HP printer.

In addition, we purchased color & black ink cartridges 3x before using up even one ream of paper. The claim of being a lower cost ink printer does not hold up. That is why I am lowering my star rating from 4 to 2.

UPDATE October 22, 2012:

Well after owning this printer for one year, the initial joy has faded, only to be replaced by frustration and misery. I am therefore reducing my rating to one star. Why?

1) The printer stopped working entirely at about the 6-month mark and had to be replaced under warranty

2) The printer regularly drops the WiFi connection and will not reconnect without powering it off and on.

3) The software wants to install updates at an annoying frequency, which makes me question the quality of the software in the first place.

4) The printer seems to go though increasing amounts of ink with age. I swear they program something into these printers to make them nearly unusable after the warranty is up. The most recent cartridge lasted only 80 pages or so, less than ONE FIFTH of the rated life.

5) The black print head is clogged and will no longer print. This is despite always using 100% genuine Kodak cartridges.

In short, this printer turned out to be an even BIGGER disappointment than my last two ink jets. Good riddance Kodak, you deserve your bankruptcy.

==== Original review from August 2011 =====

No-fuss, low cost photos I''m impressed.

Our old cannon all-in one printer finally died and will no longer feed envelopes. Plus it guzzles ink like its going out of style. Time to buy a new printer. Yuck... Naturally this involves spending 2 hours at office max looking at all the overlapping variations of printers and getting useless help from store personnel:

Employee #1: I hear Lexmark is pretty good, you should buy this one (points at random $300 printer)

Employee #2, 30 minutes later: I really don''t recommend Lexmark, Epson is the way to go (gestures in the general direction of the Epson aisle).

So I resort to using my iPhone and trying to read multi-page printer reviews on the 3" screen. At it turns out, both the Lexmark and Epson I am looking at get stinky reviews, so I decide to go with a Brother for $59. If I can''t have good, might as well go for cheap.

I''m on my way to the register, cart loaded with ink, printer and paper, when I pass a display for Kodak printers. What catches my eye is the "lowest per-page ink cost in the industry" signage. Indeed, genuine cartridges are only $10, rather than $40 for the Brother. Suddenly it occurs to me that this Brother printer isn''t going to be very cheap in the long run.

Now I''m intrigued, so the iPhone comes out again. A 3rd employee hovers at a safe distance, probably trying to work up the courage to talk to this clearly frazzled customer.

Of course the Kodak is a new model, so all I can find out is that it has a patented pigment-based ink that is supposed to last 100 years and the reviewer thinks the printer prints "above average" photos (whatever that means). Now my daughter is starting to fuss and my feet are tired so I dump the Brother back on the shelf and grab the $150 Kodak. If nothing else, I can be confident my smudged and off-color home photo prints will be inexpensive to throw away.

So I take it and home and....

1) Turn on.

2) Install software.

3) Print photo.

I left all the settings on auto, used my old photo paper from Costco and just let it rip. I figure I might as well get a baseline and find out how much time and ink I am going to waste getting all the colors and settings dialed in.

When the photo came out I almost fell over. It looked beautiful, nearly identical to the exact same photo we had paid to have professionally developed a week earlier. And I didn''t have to adjust a dang thing. Revolutionary I tell you.

Now if you were to hold them up close in your hand you can definitely tell the inkjet because it has that faint grainy "inkjet" texture to the lighter tones, so it''s not perfect. But for a little $150 box that also sends faxes and scans things I was quite amazed.

Kudos to Kodak for making my life a little easier, and for leading the way in lowering the cost of printing.

Want Kodak ESP 2170 All-in-One Printer Discount?

Just got this printer as a replacement for my ESP 6150.

First off, I think the print quality is fantastic, and the low cost of color and black ink along with the availability of a color XL cartridge is great for photos and color printing.

The wireless was easily the easiest WIFI setup I''ve experienced. I did my WIFI setup using my Sprint 4G Wireless Hotspot no problem!

My favorite feature is the back loading paper tray. I''ve experienced problems with jams both from the Kodak ESP 6150 as well as HP and Brother printers because of the front loading paper tray which curls paper in a "C pattern". If you have a big print job or your paper is sticky, the chances of jams seem higher and I''ve experienced that. With this printer, the back loading paper tray doesn''t bend the paper, it just puts it through in a straight path from back to front, like a fax machine. That makes big print jobs hum for me, and I like the design a lot better.

Also like that it''s not a huge machine.

Overall, I primarily use my printer to print lots of black and photos...this printer does it very well and at a great cost.

Even though my 6150 has a few more bells and whistles...I''m giving it up because this is really reliable and the end of the day, that''s what I''m looking for.

Only small complaint is that it''s not as fast as some of the more pricey options from Epson and HP, but speed of printing is fine for me, and I honestly like the ink savings more than a few more pages per minute of output. I think the speed is fine for most users.

I''m a little amused, just because I did happen to do considerable research before ever getting the ESP 2170 through the Vine program, and apparently the professional review sites are under the impression that this printer is being marketed as an office printer.

Actually, I think this printer could do quite well in a small office/home office setting. That''s not my quibble. But as for marketing...well here''s two noteworthy items included in my box:

-Harry Potter Design Gallery CD

-2 pair of 3-D glasses for 3-D printing software photo viewing

So, forgive the skepticism, but how many small business owners do you expect to require those last two items in the course of their workday? "I''ve just listed a lovely condo downtown, Mr. Lee. It''s a steal, and just wait until you see it in ***3-D***! Now just put on these glasses...")

Fess up, Kodak. I won''t think less of you if you admit that the ESP 2170 is being squarely aimed at the family-and-maybe-but-not-necessarily-also-home-office market.

This printer would do very nicely in a dorm setting at well. Note to my eldest: as soon as you can pry it out of my cold, dead, fingers, that is.)

THE BRASS TACKS: I''ve gone through countless printers over the past 2 decades, most meeting with ignominious deaths, some of which might or might not be attributable to the wanton use of cheap, third party knockoff or refilled cartridges. With printers so cheap, and manufacturer-branded inks so expensive, what is a girl to do? Still, I bear my share of guilt for my contributions to the landfill in the pursuit of cheap printing. And maybe, finally, that''s going to change.

I''ve had printers that deliver photorealistic prints nearly as good as the lab, but never really so nice with the "affordable" off-brand inks. Kodak claims that with this printer and their ink, I can print a 4X6 high quality photo for about nineteen cents. Wait one second! Even figuring in the schmancy paper, that beats the price of going down to the SuperCenter.

The bottom line here is that if I can print at home and at my convenience/whim at a price anywhere in the ballpark of what store labs charge, I''ll also probably print more selectively. And that makes buying the Ultra-whatsit paper seem like less of an extravagance.

The ESP 2170 prints beautiful, photo lab quality pics, absolutely. I even tried an 8X11 on Kodak''s sample "everyday" paper, and while falling short of "glossy print" quality, it was still pretty breathtaking. Not so much when I tried the same on thin, cheap 92 brightness multipurpose paper, but then, seriously.)

The included photo software, perhaps a little slow, is nonetheless very intuitive, as was the setup of this printer. I''m a computer klutz and didn''t need to call on my household''s resident tech head even once during installation. There are more bells and whistles than I''ll use right away, but everything I''ve tried accessing from the software or from the printer''s control panel copying, scanning from the flatbed and scanning from the feeder, has involved no learning curve at all, really. Your six year old can show you how to use this printer.

"Presentation" (vs. photo) printing in color on this printer is not quite best of class in terms of color "pop", or at least not vs. my previous HP Photosmart, but plenty of depth and gradations of shade almost makes up for that marginal shortcoming.

And no, I haven''t tried the 3-D photo software yet. But I just know that the kids will assemble and go "OOOOh", and "Ahhh!" and then we''ll put away the glasses and not think much about that feature again.

But it''s still neat to HAVE, y''know?

***UPDATE: 10/15/2011***

The print quality started to deteriorate during my first weeks of use, and I also had a discrepancy between the inkjet status monitor''s reading of ink levels and the actual ink level. I contacted Kodak support via online chat, and they sent me a new printhead by next day air, which appears to have corrected both issues. Net down time less than a day. And only perfect prints since so kudos to Kodak!

Since originally posting, I''ve also had the opportunity to play with the Epson Artisan 730 Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One (C11CB18201), the newest model of Epson''s flagship consumer line. You can find my review also of the Epson on Amazon, and I downloaded images that compare the outputs of both printers. The Epson is excellent, yet if anything, I''m coming away even more impressed with Kodak for the comparison. For what is effectively a minor tradeoff in terms of print quality (excepting huge enlargements or other special situations), I''m getting the seriously superior "fuel economy" of the Kodak ink, if easy, intuitive usability isn''t enough.

***2nd UPDATE 12/29/2012***

My ESP 2170 has started to drop off the WiFi with increasingly frequency, requiring a "reboot" in order to get back on the network. I''m wondering if this might have something to do with the ink depletion or *apparent* depletion issue many users have reported. It also seems to me that my 2170 has gotten increasingly thirsty since I got it, requiring more frequent cartridge replacements even as my usage of this printer for both B&W and color has decreased. I was definitely a huge fan at the outset, as you can see, and still very appreciative of the printing speed and quality of this unit vs. other printers I''ve seen. For example: Recently I had the chance to review an Epson WorkForce WF-2530 Wireless All-in-One Color Inkjet Printer, Copier, Scanner, ADF, Fax. Prints from Tablet/Smartphone. AirPrint Compatible (C11CC37201) -the Epson WorkForce is in the same price range, and was very slow compared to the Kodak. Also, the variations/depth of color as well as detail in printed photos on premium gloss Epson paper were a bit behind the Kodak in terms of quality. But for me, ink usage and reliability are what matters in an everyday printer, and the Kodak has significantly declined, over just 16 months of use. Downgraded from five stars, to three.

Apollo Quick Dry Universal Ink Jet Printer Film, 8.5 x 11 Inch Sheets, 50 Sheets per Box
  • Premium transparency film for use with ink jet printers and copiers
  • Fast-drying formula dries faster than standard films, making it great for last-minute presentations
  • Specially coated for brilliant, detailed color image reproduction and exciting visuals using personal computers and printers
  • Universal design makes it compatible with most ink jet printers
  • Sheets are 8.5 x 11 Inches

I did not receive Apollo brand transparencies as pictured, but rather Acco brand transparencies in a plain white package with a small label identifying them. However, the transparencies I received do the job just fine, and I wasn''t interested in the brand so much as the price. These are much less expensive than what I could find in stock at any local office supply store since these don''t get much use nowadays (some didn''t stock inkjet compatible transparencies at all). Overall great for me. By the way, they are serious when they tell you to use the textured side. On the textured side they dry in minutes, if you use the smooth side they take forever to dry.

I print graphics I make in photoshop on these. They grab the colors which come out intense, more than on paper. I don''t project these so I can''t speak about that. I put one on my window, it''s very pretty. Dries real quick and the colors seem stable after 6 months, but that''s not in the sun. It suffered from condensation though, so it''s water sensitive, using my HP inkjet printer ( it has a setting for transparencies, nice feature, I think it shoots more ink) with OEM ink cartridges. Quite cheap comparatively, but some other brands say theirs are water resistant after drying ( at 2$ a pop!).

I''ve used several brands of inkjet transparencies over the years, and these are by the far the worst. I bought them solely on price. The emulsion is too rough to get sharp type or images; the finished transparencies were disastrous. Very disappointing.

I bought this same exact product by the same manufacturer last year. Last year''s version was much thicker and the films stayed flat while i worked with them and printed onto them. I had no issues and was very happy with the product. This year''s version, however, has been really hard to work with, as each piece of film is super thin and wants to curl up in my printer. (think of a poster that has been rolled up for a while, this is what each sheet has done as soon as i remove it from the package.)

I have now wasted about the half the pack on printer mis-feeds that leave ink in places it shouldn''t go because the things keep getting stuck due to their rolling/ flimsy issues. And these things aren''t cheap! Neither is the ink I''m wasting. I am hoping this is just a bad pack. Pretty disappointed in the quality this time around.

Some ink colors (especially HP brand 21 black) do not stick to these sheets properly. If you''re looking for a ''crackly'' effect in black, then this product is for you. But for my purposes, it doesn''t work at all. I''m going back to the previous brand I used.

This Canon printer is super wonderful! I also own the Canon PIXMA IP100 Mobile Photo Printer since Feb 2009. I love that printer because it was mobile, small and printed beautiful photos as well as documents. But lately is started to have a few problems (going to have it repaired) that I had to put it on the shelf for this new Canon MX452. I really wanted something that was 100% wireless without sending it a cloud. This printer does everything that is says it will do and more. Printing, scanning, and faxing is a breeze! And it really is 100% wireless! I installed the software (CD) that came with the printer on my Windows 8 PC with no problems at all. There are a few programs that are helpful that work well with your printer. The Canon website also has the software on line, but then you have to install each program individually.

I had to use the printer USB cable that came with the printer in order for me to connect wireless. But you may or may not need to use the cable like I had to in order to set it up. The software and cable came in handy and connected me right away. After 1 minute the printer recognized my network. I put in my network password and connected and then the installation CD asked you to remove the printer cable to then go wireless. The only cord that is used is the power cord and the telephone cord for the faxing. Best part is I can print now from anywhere in the house from my laptop or tablet and even my Android cell. Goggle play has a Canon app, but it''s really not needed since mostly every program or web page has a print button to click on. Just make sure you don''t turn off the printer power button. When the printer is not in use the printer will just go to sleep to reduce the power. But as soon as you click print or any other feature the printer will wake up immediately.

Printing documents is sharp and clear. This printer uses 2 ink tanks (color & black). Most printer brands these days use 5 or more inks cartridges. So it really depends on how much color printing you use to notice any cost savings in using 5 tanks verses 2 tanks. So far the ink that came in the box is still going strong and has not run out. We use the printer for personal use everyday. The only thing I wish Canon would of spent more time in perfecting this printer is adding more tools to the scanning features of the printer. Needs work, but will get the scanning job done. This printer even has an area just for scanning photo negatives. Photo printing is really nice, but I didn''t really purchase this for my photos even though they do print beautiful. But overall for the low price and for everything that this printer does it is a purchase that I would truly recommend with flying colors!

Although I have only had this for less than 24 hours, I want to say this is a great printer, copier, scanner. Set up was so simple compared to others I have dealt with. The wireless connection so very easy and set up right away. So far no complaints and I highly recommend this product. The only thing I would change is the panel does not light up so it is hard to see if you do not have adequate lighting but most things, ie scanning can be done right from your computer. I will not be using the fax option so I cannot comment on this. I had previously owned a Dell All In One Printer and it was very complicated and just did not do the job.

HP LaserJet 1320tn Monochrome Network Printer

HP LaserJet 1320tn Monochrome Network Printer with Extra Input Tray
  • 1,200 dpi laser quality; automatic two-sided printing
  • Up to 22 ppm print speed, first page out in less than 8.5 seconds
  • 133 MHz Motorola V4 Coldfire processor, 16 MB RAM, expandable to 144 MB
  • Additional 250-sheet input tray, total 500-sheet capacity
  • USB 2.0 and Ethernet interfaces; PC and Mac compatible

My job as a notary signing agent requires that I do a high volume of printing on a daily basis. It''s not uncommon that I''ll have to print more than 250 pages for just one closing assignment. And I have to be able to do that several times a day. The quality of the printing has to be perfect -page after page. And I need a dual tray printer, since the loan documents need to be printed on both letter and legal size paper, depending on the type of document it is.

The HP 1320t, with 2 trays, is everything that I need. It is a durable printer, which is what I need for the amount of printing I do. It automatically switches between letter and legal size flawlessly.

Most of the printing jobs that I receive come in the form of email attachments. Sometimes the jobs are difficult because the text has been scanned as graphics, which requires a lot of printer memory. I added an additional 128MB, for a total of 144MB. That made a world of difference. And I need to be able to use many different printer utilities. Not all of the documents come in Word or PDF format. The printer can handle any job, and any print utility, with no problems.

It was very easy to set up, and it''s easy to maintain. For all of its features and capabilities, it takes up surprisingly very little desk space. I can''t say enough good things about this printer except, if I ever need to buy a new printer, this will no doubt be the model I buy.

HP 1100DTN Business Inkjet Printer

HP 1100DTN Business Inkjet Printer
  • Up to 23 pages per minute black, 20 pages per minute color
  • Up to 4,800 dpi optimized color; automatic double-sided printing
  • Modular HP ink cartridges and print heads for cost-effective high-quality
  • Network-capable for small workgroups using optional print servers
  • PC and Macintosh compatible

My volume of printing has increased recently and I needed to purchase a printer which was more cost efficient. After shopping for months, I came across an excellent review of the costs of printing in PC mag. They reported the cost of the HP 1100 to be similar to laser printers and I was skeptical. HP has achieved this efficiency by placing the print heads separate from the ink and having four ink cartridges, yellow, magenta, cyan and black. You only replace what you use and you don''t have to replace the print heads with every ink. I didn''t want to buy a laser printer because of the warm up time and because I print pictures. This printer prints standard quality very quickly, but it does spool up longer than other inkjet printers I have owned. The duplex feature saves paper by printing on two sides automatically; however, printing time goes up because the printer needs to wait for the ink to dry before printing the second side. This printer is on my home network with three computers and Windows XP and 98 and I have had no problems yet. Setup was faultless, although lengthy. My relatives have invested in other brands of printers and although the print quality is fine they have spent endless hours troubleshooting. Except for the usual Windows type frustrations (while slogging through system upgrades, switching to networking, switching to USB, hard-drive crashes, cable changes and driver updates) my other HP inkjet printers have performed as advertised and even performed well on systems they were not designed for. While this printer is much more substantial than my other new inkjet printers, many parts are only plastic and I''m afraid it will not last under hard use. This printer would probably be fine for heavy home use or sharing in light business use but probably too light weight for higher volume types of printing such as newsletters and brochure production.

So far I am happy with this printer. I have had another HP for 5+ years and it still works just thought it was time to upgrade to a faster printer (not to mention I now have two networked computers and was cumbersome to keep changing cables to print). Just a copule of small things I have notice: takes 45+ sec from off state to print first page, I have yet to see the print cartridges sold in local stores (Office Depot, Office Max, WalMart), print head and ink are now seperate (supposed to make ink replacement cheaper in long run), in XP (home? which is what I use) do not enable ICF on the ethernet connection or you will not be able to print (not a big deal in most networks with a firewall built into the hub or router unless you take your laptop away from home often).

I installed this printer in a mixed (Windows/Linux) network in a SOHO. Setup was a drawn out affair, but the printer itself worked fine once I finished putting it together. The Windows driver install had trouble with automatic discovery of the printer. Using the "test" button on the print server (not documented in the quick setup, unfortunately) and entering the address by hand worked. Printing from Linux worked "out of the box" for recent versions of Linux. This is despite HP''s statement that Linux isn''t supported. If you''re running an older version of Linux, you may need to get a PPD file for the printer (linuxprinting.org).

Print quality is better than I expected, considering some of the reviews I''ve seen. The printer is not blazingly fast, but it''s considerably faster than the printer it replaced here (an HP 970CSE). I haven''t seen any paper handling problems. Even double-sided printing on 24lb paper (a problem with earlier HP printers) works reliably.

My only complaints about this printer are physical. It''s big for a SOHO printer. Right now it''s hulking over in the corner. It''s also unusually ugly for an HP product. Finally, it''s fairly noisy while printing (it''s dead silent when idle). But it works reliably and it''s considerably cheaper than any of the alternatives I examined. Nothing else provided networking, duplex printing, higher capacity paper trays and individual ink cartridges at anything approaching this price.

One final note: I''m told that this printer has been discontinued by HP. It looks like the replacement will be the HP 1200dtn Business Inkjet Printer. It has more memory, a slightly faster engine, and is otherwise feature comparable with the 1100dtn, so perhaps it will be a better bet once it''s available.

We''ve used this at our small business office since November.

I don''t think I''ve ever hated a printer as much.

Although it is pricey, it is way slow. Maybe 40s per page and 10-20s to turn over the page to print the other side. You read that right if we get more than a page a minute out we are doing good. The only way to get acceptable speed is to go to draft mode and turn off double sided printing. Not what you expect in a $300 printer.

The other thing we hate about it is that the cartridges are now coded so that remanufactured cartridges won''t work. (It works by expiration date a cartridge old enough to have been used up and re-filled gets rejected by the printer. I wonder what happens if you are unfortunate enough to buy a new cartridge that has been stockpiled somewhere.)

Overall, I have to believe there are better choices. Of our three printers, I only use this one when I really want double-sided.

HP Q3112A ScanJet 4600 See-Thru Flatbed Scanner

HP Q3112A ScanJet 4600 See-Thru Flatbed Scanner
  • 2,400 dpi optical resolution
  • 48-bit color depth, 256-level grayscale
  • See through scanner cover
  • Front panel buttons for power save, scan, copy, and HP Instant Share
  • USB interface, PC and Mac compatible

As an avid scrapbooker and scrapbook business owner, scanning images that are "lumpy and bumpy" is next to impossible and believe me, I''ve tried every possible scanner out there. One of HP''s ScanJet''s did the trick for a while but it took up a majority of my desk. NOW I have a scanner that allows me to scan all my "lumpy and bumpy" objects with ease. Having a tough time finding something to scan something larger than 8x10? That''s alright! This scanner comes with stitching software that gives PERFECT, SEAMLESS stitching. Awesome, awesome scanner. The best part is that I can stand it upright and store it beside my monitor so that I have more room for .... well .... more junk on my desk! :)

I have just purchased this scanner with trepidation, given the bad reviews it''s received here. Yet, it has been highly rated by other consumer reporting websites. After being burned by Visioneer''s technical support (2+ hours wait period, then asked to call back the following day), I decided to give HP ScanJet 4600 a chance. Falling prices have made this unit much more affordable.

I had no issues with installation using WinXP, SP2. I found that it scans text, illustrations, and newspaper print (post-edited with bundled stitching software) very well. I use third party software for image-editing and OCR. Therefore, I cannot comment on the performance of included software other than the stitching software, which was very easy to use for obtaining a quality image. This machine is also portable enough to take to libraries to scan materials such as newspapers and books (where the book binding isn''t prohibitive). For me, this is a big plus. It''s lightweight and much thinner than other bulky scanners, which would be a burden to carry. It scans items face up or face down and is detachable from it''s horizontal base. This is a bonus for scanning items like maps or oversized books. In addition, it takes up little space when stored vertically.

I have scanned few photos, as this was not my primary purpose for purchasing a scanner. I found that the scanning surface must be cleaned with lens towels prior to glossy photo scanning to remove all dust particles, which will show up in images. If archiving photos were my primary scanner purpose, I would recommend selecting a different scanner, because post-scan editing is required to return some images to more natural hues.

I will say that while scanning one book, I did see black and white banding at the crease, which is analogous to how loss of focus occurs when photocopying books near the crease. I found that the binding must be pressed such that the book was flush against the scanning surface. If one plans to scan many books where the binding holds the book tightly closed, then you may have problems with this product.

All in all, this product works very well for my purposes as well as appealing aesthetically.

Scans of various drawings and paintings done with the HP Scanjet 4600 exhibit alternating light and dark bands parallel to the direction of the scan. The bands vary in intensity depending on the color or value of the area being scanned. This problem showed up on two samples of the scanner. HP has been of no real help in solving this problem and I have returned both samples. The design is ideal for scanning large items but, unfortunately, the bands make the product useless.

Granted, this is a great scanner and an inventive design. For me, however, the design screams to be used in a mobile fashion. After all, the unit is touted as a great scanner for large or unwieldy items (as opposed to a strictly desktop scanner, for instance). In my case, I was looking to use it for copying from books for use in research. If you have tried copying from a book on a flatbed scanner, even one with an expandable lid, you''ll know the difficulty involved. With the 4600, one can effectively crop the book in realtime, eliminating the guesswork. BUT, imagine my surprise to learn that the scanner comes with a wall wart AC transformer! The addition of a power adapter significantly undercuts the 4600''s utility as a mobile scanner (e.g.--books in a library). As an owner of a usb-powered Canon flatbed scanner, it didn''t even occur to me that the 4600 would be different. Note that the marketing materials leave the impression that the 4600 is usb-powered. It touts a "combination usb/AC cable", a phrase that is certainly open to interpretation. In this case, it isn''t even true: at some point, the "combination cable" _must_ split into a piece leading to the pc and a piece leading to the AC adapter. What is the advantage in this??? Also, the marketing materials cryptically list among the contents this line: AC adapter (where applicable). What does this even mean? A big thumbs down to HP for crippling a potentially great scanner, and attempting to hide its true identity. It''s great as a desktop scanner, but there are loads of competitors that are cheaper in that class.

This is the best scanner I have used so far. Though I have only used it for scanning in book pages (with pictures) and documents and not photographs. It is very easy to use and the software worked fine on my XP SP2. I like the see through feature, you can see the area that is being scanned. Also it is much easier to handle than other scanners so you''ll scan much faster. I just place the scanner over the book pages I need to scan and not the other way round. Overall I was very pleased.

HP PhotoSmart 145 4" x 6" Photo Printer Save 6% off

HP PhotoSmart 145 4'' x 6'' Photo Printer
  • Prints directly from your camera''s memory card
  • Up to 4,800 dpi printing for vivid color and crisp detail
  • 2-line text-only LCD; 1 USB port, 4 memory card slots
  • HP Photo & Imaging software
  • PC and Mac compatible; 1-year warranty

HP did a great job on this printer. It was less than $200 and it makes printing small pics to pass around so simple and easy. I take pics with my Kodak camera, insert the memory card into the printer, press print, and away it goes. No need to use a computer that''s the best part. Kodak software or the free HP software both work with this printer. Both are fine.

Photo quality is almost on par with regular grocery store prints from film. The printing itself takes a while and you have to wait for the ink to dry; however, compared to dropping film off and waiting to pick it up, this picture making system is far faster and more convenient.

Bottom line, if you have time & want the best picture quality possible, use film or print digitally with an online service. This device gives 90% of grocery store quality, but much faster and more convenient. It makes taking digital pictures and sharing pictures more fun.

As Robert Redford said in the film "Out of Africa" (speaking of a phonograph) "they''ve finally come up with something useful!" That is my opinion of the HP Photosmart 145. This is a dandy little workhourse that will generate countless 4 x 6 photographs from your digital camera with no hassle or fuss. The HP 145 is a small, tight little package that you can easily pack away and take along on trips.

The HP 145 really helps make the "digital darkroom" a reality, even during trips. I take mine on my boat together with a small laptop computer, and can generate high-quality 4 x 6 photos right on the spot, after taking shots with various digital cameras. The HP 145 has a built-in CF card reader and also reads various other popular media and you can easily print directly from the CF card or other media even without the laptop too--the printer will print out a nice little thumbnail "index" showing little minatures of the photos each bearing an index number. You can then select and print the full photo. This also means that you don''t need to bring a card reader along if you have your HP 145 since it functions as a digital media reader. Typically I will download my digital photos to my notebook computer''s hard disk using my HP 145, view the photos on the notebook screen for printing, and then print selected photos with the HP 145. Great fun!

My HP 145 installed effortlessly on my IBM Thinkpad notebook computer (IBM TP 600E) running Windows XP, and is now my main printer for 4 x 6 photos and of course is the only printer I take along on trips. It is great fun to go on trips, take photos, and then give friends nicely framed photos the next day, or later the same day. Frankly, I never realized how much fun it was to have a printer along on trips. Most printers nowadays are big and bulky. This one is not.

I went with the 145 rather than the 245, the latter being the same printer but with an LCD color display. I decided that I wouldn''t get 50 bucks worth of value out of the LCD display since a) I always bring my laptop along anyway since that is where I always download my CF card pictures to for storage on trips (that way you can re-use the CF card the next day); and b) the 145 has that neat index printing feature anyway, if you want to print without a computer. You decide. Either way, these are dandy little printers and I will likely never take another trip without bringing my HP 145 along. That is the hallmark of a truly useful product!

It''s a nice little unit, but not all that great. It does, however do a better job than most regular printers. By far, to my experience (current owner of 3 HP printers) HP mfg some of the best, if not THE BEST printers.

Now, back to the photosmart 145...the major plus is the ease of use (extremely easy) the ergonomics are well laid out and as a 1st timer on photo printers, I didn''t have to read the manual. The photosmart 145 will not earn 5 stars due to the limited features/functions that was incorporated...like: only 4X6 photo size and no option for wallet size prints; can''t do "portrait" prints to my option but only landscape, maybe can do on computer with bundled software and having to "rotate" pictures to coincide. Prints resulted in "cropped" pictures leaving the edges cutoff or "deleted" by 1/4" on top and bottom (border or borderless). You do have more options when operating prints from a computer and you can select many various features like print quality, tweaking colors and so forth. The print qualities are acceptable, even at "Best" mode, I can still comb through some tiny, tiny pixelated dithering effects on prints with the naked eye. I''ve printed better quality pictures from my other non-photo HP printer. Also, it is not wise to stick a media card full of pictures into the unit itself for direct printing unless you want to take wild guesses for what to print and not to print of certain pictures. The monochrome lcd screen tells you how many pictures and I.D. them by numbers only, so if you want to print ONLY that picture of your cute little niece in the middle of the pile somewhere, well, good luck...unless you have an Intel chip-equipt brain or alot of $$ to waste on photo papers. Overall, this is a nice little unit. I would only use for quick prints to distribute photos of my cars to my insurance companies, share photos with friends/colleagues and for municipal purposes. For the photo albums, I will either take my shots to Rite-Aid for quality prints or maybe invest some $$ for a more advance printer in the near future perhaps the 245 or 325...but wait, what am I complaining about? I got the photosmart 145 for FREE when I purchased my Leica D-LUX digital camera. Leica UPS''d it to me 3 weeks later...I guess I have nothing to lose but to share the experience with you before you fork out the $$.

Overall: 3 & 1/2 Stars!

PROS:

HP design (always good print quality)

Print photos without computer.

Bundled software.

Compact size with a "good grip" to handle.

Easy to use.

PC & Mac compatible

CONS:

Cropped pictures printed (loss or deleted from top & bottom portions)

Limited onboard features.

No LCD picture screen.

Only 4X6 size option.

USB cable not included.

Flimsy plastic Ink Cartridge Door (very fragile & will break someday).

Loud "clicking" and "clunking" noise when operating or opening Ink Cartridge Door...(thought it was breaking).

Overall "Cheap" housing.

Help!! I can''t get to bed and it''s 4AM! Too busy playing with my new HP 145. Best Christmas present I''ve ever gotten myself. As much fun as I had with it the first two hours after I hooked it up to the computer with a USB cable; it got even more fun. By hooking up to the computer, you can use the edit features and get even better pictures. The HP 145 is so simple to use and the results are amazing perhaps just a touch lighter (like washed out) than when I order my fotos from Ofoto but more than acceptable considering ease, fun, speed, and the ability to share photos immediately. And talk about transportable. It''s light, small and seems sturdy (although it IS an electonic device). I plan to take it with us on our visit with family in another state over the holiday week. What a kick we''ll have!!!!!
