I currently have 2 printers that I use for my printing needs. The first is a Canon PIXMA MP990. The second is an Amazon Vine provided Canon PIXMA PRO-1. I''ve also had, and since discarded, a few Epson Work Force printers via Amazon Vine. The Canon printers have always performed at the level I''ve expected and the Pro 100 is no exception.

It was with some excitement that I was offered the Pro 100 to compare to my current models.

Printer was installed on a Win 7 64 bit based laptop with 8 GB RAM.

Setup-

Instead of using the enclosed CD for software installation, I decided to download the drivers and software directly from Canon''s website. Based on this, the installation was pretty simple. I used the printer connected directly via USB because the printers are all very close to my work PC. I have a nice USB hub that I use the two printers and other devices.

While I say setup was simple, please don''t confuse this with it being a quick process. The process is quite lengthy, much like the Pro-1. I didn''t time it completely, but it was at least an hour from start to finish, not including the unboxing. Installing the print head and cartridges just takes time you can''t get around it.

Installing the software is pretty easy -just keep hitting next mostly.

Another thing to note is that, like the Pro 1, this printer is HEAVY. It''s roughly 45 lbs and you will almost certainly want someone to help you move the boxed printer around, along with pulling the printer out of the box and placing on the desk/table.

Print Quality-

Here''s where the Pro 100 comes into it''s own.

The Pro 100 is a dye based printer. The prints from this, on Canon paper with proper paper profiles chosen, results in some vibrant and amazing results. In comparing this to the MP990, prints from the Pro 100, as expected, are better. Doing a blind comparison with family members, everyone prefers the Pro 100 results to the MP990. This isn''t unexpected, given this printer uses many more inks to provide the results.

The Pro 100 isn''t amazingly better than the MP990, but the results are much, much closer to what''s on screen. The MP990 also has some minor issues with gradients that I''m not seeing from the Pro 100 results.

The Pro 1 printer is a pigment based printer. Pigment based printers are, generally speaking, not nearly as vibrant as dye based printers. So comparing the Pro 100 results to Pro 1 results kind of leaves you with a mixed bag. Black and White from the Pro 1 are phenomenal. Great highlights, midtones and shadows. The Pro 100 is quite nice in B&W and if you didn''t have a Pro 1 result sitting next to it, you wouldn''t know any different. The differences are subtle but noticeable under scrutiny.

In terms of color, this is also a mixed bag. I like the vibrancy from the Pro 100 for some prints and the more subdued look of the pigment. For those that can afford both printers, the ink tanks for both and the large amount of space required, I can see that someone might actually make the argument to use both for different photos. No question.

I using Canon Pro Platinum paper and the cheaper Semigloss plus paper in my testing. I prefer these two papers for my prints but hope to invest in some other types to compare results there as well.

Considerations-

In terms of print cartridge costs, using less in this case, helps you save a few dollars compared to the Pro 1. Of course, the Pro 1 uses massive "tanks" of ink while the Pro 100 still uses standard cartridges. It''s too difficult to compare price per sheet, but given there are less tanks and they are smaller, you may end up breaking even between these inks and those in the Pro 1 in terms of cost.

Dye based printers, like the Pro 100, get a bad rap. Everyone claims dye based prints don''t last nearly as long as pigment. This is true or was true. The ChromaLife 100+ system from Canon claims longevity of up to 300 years for some prints on this dye based printer. I won''t be around long enough to verify that, that''s for certain. And I think pigment based printers boast the same or similar longevity. Minimum life claims seems to be 100 years on Canon paper and using Canon ink... I probably won''t be around to verify that either.

Conclusion-

The Pro 100 printer is a great printer. If you can afford the printer and not the Pro 1, don''t fret. You''re still getting a great printer that outputs stunning results. Both do amazing jobs with prints that accentuate their positives.

Recommended.

Pros:

Amazing print quality these are professional results

Easy to use

Supposedly near pigment level longevity of prints

Cons:

Expensive (relative to say, the $75 all in one, but average for a PRO quality printer)

Ink is expensive

Big and Heavy (not as big, or heavy, as the Pro 1 though)

I think what most of you will want to know is what the difference are between this Pro100 and the previous Pro 9000 Mark II. The first regrettable difference is that it uses different ink cartridges. They are the same size, but have a different number. I imagine they changed the electronic interface or something, and they also use 2 additional gray inks.

The second, and what I think is the more important difference, is they added both wireless and wired network interface. This allows you to put this massive printer in a side room or somewhere out of the way if you don''t have a lot of room by your computer, and it also means all the computers in your house can easily use it to print without sharing it between computers.

Printing on the luster paper samples that were included with the printer, I couldn''t tell a difference in detail between this printer and my old Pro 9000 MkII. Even for my black and white test shot the shadows and details looked virtually identical. For my color print, my Pro 9000 MkII always had a magenta cast to it. I think that is gone, but it might be slightly green now. Both can be calibrated, but that takes a significant effort. I mainly use mine for printing contest photos, so as long as they look fine by themselves I don''t care too much if they are color matched. Again, detail wise I couldn''t identify which print came from which printer.

So bottom line is I don''t see much reason to upgrade from the Pro 9000 MkII unless you want wireless/wired network printing. Also be aware that this printer is about 1" larger in every dimension than the old 9000 MkII which was very large.

As far as home printing is concerned, I have won several contests with my old Pro 9000 MkII so it does a good enough job for prints. You really can''t tell them from a pro shop for the most part. Longevity wise, my prints look fine after a year from the 9000 (similar Dye based) and are supposed to last 100 years. Although I don''t believe that, as long as you buy genuine inks you should get pretty good life out of them. If you really need archival prints you should probably look at a pigment based printer.

I''m lucky and excited at having the opportunity to use the "Canon Pixma Pro-100". I''ve a strong interest in black and white photography and was considering an upgrade to a printer with increased b&w capabilities. I''ve been using, and have been very pleased with, the Pixma pro-9500 mkII which uses pigment inks, and I''ve been concerned with switching to a dye based printer which the ''Pro-100'' is.

Upon delivery I unpacked it, set it up, started the accompanied CD, and the installation completed without any difficulty. Right off, I printed b&w and color photos on both printers for comparative purposes using the ''Pro Luster'' paper that was included with the delivery. I noted on the back of each photo which printer was responsible, and then shuffled them. I''ve expected and gotten great photos from my Canon printer, however, bottom line is both color and contrast are noticeably improved with the ''Pro-100''.

The ''pro-100'' produces impressive and brilliant photos, and its Wifi ability is an appreciated plus. I do, however, have concerns regarding the longevity of the dye based inks and I''ve been unable to find any credible, up to date, information. I''ve subsequently submitted a query to Canon regarding this and if and when I receive an answer I''ll update this review.

10/24/12 Update, from Canon: Canon uses ChromaLife 100+ for the ink tanks. This is a test of light and other daily effects that will cause the picture to fade. If stored properly it will last over 100 years. I am sorry for any issue this might cause you.

I''ve tried the Pixma Pro-1 and the Pixma Pro9000, basically two ends of the Canon Pixma Pro spectrum, and with both of them I''ve lamented the lack of Wifi. Finally I got my hands on this Pixma Pro-100. WiFi...woohoo...woot woot! Now I can print from both my mac and my pc and put the printer anywhere within the feeble range of my clearwire router.

I had some trouble hooking up the wifi, I was trying to use WPS to network the printer to the router using my Windows 7 pc to help. Since there is no control panel on the printer (it''s kind of funny you can get a cheap all-in-one printer with a zillion buttons, a full keypad and a display screen, but these more expensive printers are so much more basic in that area) you need some way to input the PIN from the printer. I followed the instructions as best I could but I ended up connecting the Windows 7 PC to the SnowLeopard Mac using bluetooth, which I was kind of excited about but in the end simply meant that whenever I played music on the Mac it would come out the PC speakers and I had to figure out how to undo it. Finally I tried WCN, and THAT let me fairly easily connect to the network with the Pixma Pro-100 printer.

The printer comes with a separate cd for both the mac and pc os and I installed all the software available for both platforms. It is basically the same as the software that comes with the Pro-1 and the Pro9000 and the one for the mac is harder to navigate through than the pc version when it comes to the printing from Photoshop dialogues. At first I couldn''t even find all the options.

I was hoping that the quality of print would be the same on this Pro-100 as it is on the Pro-1, but the Pro-1 does have 12 ink cartridges to the Pro-100s 8, and those extra cartridges are an extra black (one for matte and one for photo), a few extra shades of gray and a chroma optimizer. I printed out a 13x19 collage I''d made of pictures from Casa Batlló in Barcelona with both printers. At first glance both prints looked gorgeous. At second glance, the shadows are lacking with this Pixma-100. Images just don''t have as much depth, and the less color in a photograph the more noticable it is.

If you are a professional photographer, an art photographer, a perfectionist...comparing them side by side I don''t think you are going to be satisfied with this Pixma Pro-100. It simply is not as good as the Pro-1. Unless you HAVE TO HAVE the WiFi, if you can''t afford the Pro-1 or can''t justify the cost you are probably better off with the Pro9000, which has 8 ink cartridges as well but they are currently much cheaper to replace than the Pro-100 cartridges and it prints pictures equally as well as the Pro-100.

There is one other option I haven''t tried: the Pro-10. It has ten ink cartridges including the two blacks and the chroma optimizer. It only has one shade of gray ink, but I think it''s likely to have most if not all of the POP and the subtle shading of the Pro-1 while being significantly cheaper.

Admittedly, professional studio level black and white reproduction was never within my range of expectations from this dye-based printer. Nevertheless, the pronounced brownish/sepia tinting was truly shocking. In fact, the black and white tonality is decidedly inferior to what I have achieved in the past using far less sophisticated and much less expensive Canon printers with rudimentary photo editing software. I spent a couple of hours this afternoon on the phone with a ten-year veteran Canon tech assistant who led me through myriad software tweaks and settings. There was no improvement. He concluded with the observation that he is not aware of a single positive review with regard to the black and white printing capabilities of the PRO-100.

On the other hand, my [thus far] limited color printing has produced excellent results and there is much which commends the PRO-100 if your output consists almost entirely of color photos. But unless the rep and I both overlooked the "solution", this device is not the answer for quality black and white reproduction.

Avery Foil Mailing Labels, 3/4 x 2-1/4, Gold, 300/Pack, PK - AVE8987
  • Foil return address labels for inkjet printer.
  • For an elegant look on invitations, announcements, letters.
  • Glossy finish foil for brilliant color and sharp text quality.
  • Perfect for seasonal and special occasion mailings.

These labels work great; I used them with Adobe Illustrator (and the online templates therefor) and had no problems. However, there is a regular 8.5x11 piece of paper in the box with the labels with "label outlines" to use as a test, and, for whatever reason, THAT did not conform well to the template. So when I did a trial run it was rather disappointing, but I just said, "Screw it." And printed a (partial) sheet of labels, which came out perfect. Not sure why the trivial components of the package would be the least well implemented, but be warned. That said, the final product was great.

You''ll also want to use bold text on these, since the bold labels I made look MUCH better and are MUCH more readable than the more stylized, thin fonts I tried out.

OK, I''ll admit it: I''m an office supply junkie always searching for the perfect label, perfect file folder, perfect mechanical pencil under $10, etc. I jump at the opportunity to review these items, so here we are ...

I''ve been using these gold foil labels to make some very nice return address labels (I don''t mail much these days, but when I do, I like to use nice labels). I''ve also used them to make labels to put in books that I loan to friends, in the hope that the book will someday find its way back home.

They feed perfectly in my HP Photosmart inkjet printer. I''ve never had a problem of any kind with hang-ups, misfeeds, jamming, etc.

The size of these is perfect for my use; sometimes, these address labels can be a tad too small. Not these. The size is generous enough that I can include my phone number on my book labels.

These are perfect return mailing labels. They adhere well to the envelope, ink from my inkjet printer transferred beautifully to each label, and of course the metallic gold color looks really great especially when sending out specialty cards or announcements that you just want to have a more sophisticated look. Good luck however if you would like to simply write on these (maybe for file folders for organization, etc.) as ball point ink don''t really work despite how hard you press and markers smear. If you purchase these specifically for your return mailing labels, you won''t be disappointed.

It bought this machine because it has two paper trays and the ink usage was supposed to be reasonable. This machine is beautiful to look at-not so great when it comes to work. I bought this to replace my Canon Pixma that finally died after several years. This is for home use and I bought it primarily to print both photos and plain paper at the same time: from Tray 2 plain paper documents, homework, and articles from the internet and with Tray 1 loaded with photo paper to print 4 x 6 photos wirelessly from my phone or Ipad. These photos previously rarely ever ended up getting printed so it was my hope that I would be printing out a lot of family photos finally.

The machine seems like it was cheaply made. Right out of the box some handle to hold the top open came off and I never could get it put back in. It set up wirelessly with the network but I did need some help for printing from my phone-printing from the Ipad was a easy. The photo quality was very poor-so much so that even though I was thrilled to print these photos-I would not hang them on the bulletin board. The paperwork states that the best photos will be with Brother paper although it isn''t sold at the Staples store near me -so that is an extra hassle and I can''t believe the photos would be THAT much better-they were bad. With regard to plain paper printing I kept having random printer failure-one minute I could print-the next minute the same document would fail. As it goes in life-these unexplained printer failures were always at the worst time and I need to be able to print with the printer. I did not have it longer enough to comment on the ink usage. I am sending it back to Brother.

AlsoI want to quickly comment on the customer service which is life of the machine-which is great. However,I think that customer service is only as good as the people answering the phone or doing the online "Chat" for Brother and I have to sayI had two that didn''t know the product and gave me completely different answers than the other two. Ugh!

Arrived as advertised from Amazon. After setup the paper would jam every time I tried to print. Called Brother support and after some trouble shooting steps they decided to replace it. I got the replacement in 1 day and returned the the defective unit at no cost to me. The replacement was everything I expected, wireless setup was a breeze, scan and printing works very well and takes up half the space of the Canon it replaced. Brother service and support was outstanding. Would have given it 5 stars, except for the bad experience at the beginning.

We had this tray for about two weeks; typically all printing is double-sided to save paper. Soon after, we returned it (the return went smoothly, as usual).

Installation of the unit is simple -just place the printer on it and you''re done -so if you do no or very little duplexing it''s a great addition. However, if you''re a regular duplexer, I would recommend you avoid it.

After much research into the Epson R2400 & R1800, I got the 2400. I am absolutely impressed with the quality of pictures! It does a phenominal job. I have two other epson printers, one is the much older 800 which I took to work & am still using. The other is the R200 that I use for general printing & printing on my cd''s & dvd''s. I had a canon 9900 & I90 before. The epson is far superior to the canon. I liked the tech support at canon but I love the epson printers & have never had to use tech support. Yes, the ink is hard to find. It is a high end printer & your ordinary big box stores doesn''t want to mess with it. I order online & save money that way. When I run out of one cartridge, I order 2 to replace it. The printer gives you plenty of warning so you don''t run out. I am an amateur photographer & do lots of scrapbooking. I print all my own pictures with the Epson. It''s not your ordinary printer but I don''t want ordinary pictures. I haven''t been disappointed yet. You just have to make sure you set the print settings for the media you are using.

Buy Epson 8 Color Ink Set with Photo Black for the Stylus R2400 Inkjet Printer. Now

First if you actually own this printer you will know that it can use 9 types of ink, BUT it can only use 8 at a time. So to Mr./Miss one star rating down there.... it only uses 8 inks at a time and you have to switch back and forth from matte/photo ink if you want to print on those two types of paper.

Next Continuous ink systems are just as expensive because in the end the hassle the can and will cause will ultimately cost you the consumer MONEY.

FINALLY choose a "compatible ink" if you want to. You will find that the quality is what you pay for.

If you want QUALITY archival prints, the stick with epson until someone makes something that is not only compatible but BETTER.

These are good quality cartridges as always. They produce very good prints on any type of paper. Will always use them.

Full retail is grossly overpriced. This set is still expensive, but at least it saves a few bucks. It arrived quickly and is real Epson ink. Replacements, in my experience, end up being a lot more costly when they clog the printer and make a mess.

You think oil companies gouge us? Calculate the cost of a gallon of Epson ink. The comparison makes the oil companies look like overly generous philanthropists.

I have waited many many years for the perfect all in one COLOR LASER....and this is it + more! I bought mine from a local store and have had it about a week. It comes in a huge box, but don''t worry, this MFC is large but not too large compared to the other Brother mono laser all-in-ones (of which I have owned three over the years). The print quality is EXCELLENT and very fast for full color (21 pages per minute). My only initial concern was that it creased envelopes when printing on envelopes......but after consulting the manual there are fuser tension adjustment switches that solves that for perfect envelope printing (Settings, A, B and Envelope). I had compared many all-in-one color laser machines for many years (including recent ones from Xerox and HP). I was surprised that HP hadn''t come out with a great, feature rich one yet. Brother beat HP to the punch and it is a knockout for sure. I am replacing a higher end Minolta color laser with flatbed scanner, a Brother MFC mono, and an HP mono workhorse with this ONE MFC-9840CDW!!! I am very very picky with print quality but this one is great! Bonus features are built-in duplex scanning, duplex printing, and wireless network capability! The replacement supply costs are also very reasonable and lower than most of the other color laser brands. Brother truly has a winner on its hand with the MFC-9840CDW!!! Thank you Brother....I LOVE IT!

My wife is an em elementary school teacher, and she gets limited numbers of copies for each term. She also has a great deal of worksheets and other papers that take up a lot of room and make finding a particular worksheet very hard. We came up with a plan: All of her documents would be scanned into a PDF with management software, and she would be able to make copies for her classroom when she ran out at work. We wanted a color laser printer with network scanning and duplexing and had looked at all the different solutions but were bummed to find that many of the scanners only supported printing from Apple computers and not scanning to them. Some had the options to scan to e-mail, but the documentation on these features were very limited.

After looking around at an HP model and a Canon model we decided to look at what Brother had to offer. We were pleased when we saw the specs and features on this model. The best feature was its Mac support which was very extensive. In fact, this was the only model in our search that had equal support for both Mac computers and Windows computers.

I found that the software on the Mac and its Windows counterparts were written fairly well. On the Macs that run 10.5 we had to get an updated TWAIN driver for scanner control, but that was the only small issue we had. You can walk up to the scanner, scan to the computer in the other room over WiFi or even save a scan to your Flash drive by plugging it directly into the front. It is very handy. The scan quality was on par with what I expected. I wouldn''t use it for high-end photo scanning, but an occasional family picture scan here or there, especially for web distribution will be just fine with it.

The print quality was also very nice. Even on cheaper paper the colors were vibrant and not splotchy at all. Text was crisp and print times were more than acceptable. I was getting about 20ppm both in color and black and white once the unit was warmed up. Slightly slower than the 21ppm claim, but the pages were also more than 5% covered which is likely where they get that number.

Faxing is somewhat convoluted compared to other all-in-one devices. After a few blank test faxes though, the steps were easy enough to remember and it does a superb job for those occasional fax jobs that we require.

Pros:

*Great Mac and Windows Support

*Software is easy to use and works well

*Scanning quality is very high

*Many scanning options including direct to flash drive

*Great color printing

*Great B&W printing

*Wireless networking is very nice and works reasonably well

*Toner reasonably priced

*Real duplexing for scanning and printing

Cons:

*Faxing function is slightly convoluted

*Scan to email doesn''t seem to work with Gmail or Google Apps domains and the required authentication schemes

*Software and drivers don''t appear to be downloadable from Brother''s website, so hold onto those CDs that come with it

*All networking functions are off by default

*Some features lack thorough documentation and require a certain level of trial and error mixed with technical skill to complete successfully

*Color scanning can be slightly time consuming, especially over the wireless network to a computer

Overall thoughts:

Overall this printer was worth every penny. Hundreds cheaper than similar models, and it provides great Mac support. For simple printing from a Mac, no software or drivers needed to be installed. The software was only for scanning and other advanced features. My wife has scanned in hundreds of pages already. I must say, I truly love this printer.

The print quality is much higher than on the HP. In B&W it is similar to the old brother laser.

The print speed is out of this world, especially for color. The inkjet could take minutes per page for letter-size photo prints. This one doesn''t seem to take any longer than for other prints, amazingly ! This is no doubt thanks to its 128 MB of memory. I was thinking about upgrading the RAM, but there just isn''t any need to do that at all !

Copies are also spectacular, just as fast as any photocopier. The HP all-in-one could take several minutes per page in the highest quality in color, and typically at least a minute even for high-quality black & white. And of course the quality is much better.

Scanning speed is also great. It is really measured in pages per minute, not minutes per page.

The ADF duplex scanning is invaluable.

The bundled software (Paperport) is also very reliable and far superior to the bloated crap that came with the HP.

Despite its size, this unit actually saves office space compared to having two separate inkjet color and black & white laser units.

Photo prints are very good. I have noticed some yellowing compared to the inkjet prints. But I am confident it''s possible to adjust this in software and make the photo prints just as good as the inkjet. I just haven''t had time to fiddle with it yet.

The unit is not perfect, but nearly so. There are a couple things that I wish were improved :

The ADF is limited to A4/letter size. For legal size documents, you must use the glass scanner. This is my biggest regret about the machine. If I could I would give 4.99 stars because of it instead of 5.

It weighs 85 lbs, actually 115 lbs with all the packaging. With the packaging, it was too large to fit through my stairs. I had to remove it all first. And if I didn''t have a roommate, I would not have been able to bring it to the 2nd floor. I wish there was a printer with all these features at less than 50 lbs packaged. Or perhaps Brother could deliver it in 2 separate parts to assembler (let''s say, printer unit and scanner unit) in 2 smaller boxes, so one person alone could move it and set it up.

It doesn''t work with glossy inkjet photo paper. That paper just melts and half the sheets come out pink. I had to sell all my Costco photo paper with the HP inkjet, and buy new special laser photo paper (HP branded) that worked great. I wish I had known about this requirement before the purchase.

So many good things were already said. I just want to add a few things I learned while using the product over the last few months:

Only one job can happen at the same time. While you print you cannot scan or fax no matter how much memory you have.

Reviews often state that the printer has only medium color printing quality. The printer is great but the PCL driver is not. Use the Postscript driver instead, which is a little bit slower, and you get results, which I would say are similar to HP. The difference is amazing.

Scanning works perfectly. I use it to do editing on print-outs and then scan it in, and send it back to the publisher. I also use it to archive hardcopy documents. It is very fast with 400 DPI b/w scanning. The feeder pulls the paper sometimes not totally straight.

You can use standard notebook memory to increase memory. It eats old 100 Mhz SO-DIMM in up to 512MB size.

It takes a while to warm-up. Both when printing and scanning. It makes the light flicker when it warms up. It works well on a shared 15A circuit so.

I love the iFAX feature. I can send a fax, have the printer convert it to a TIFF, and send it directly out via a SMTP server without needing a extra computer. I use for sending stuff to an Oracle ERP archiving system. (It can also convert to PDF.)

It also can scan and send a document to FTP or via the Control Center to a PC or save to local USB flash. You can remote control the functions of the printer via pre-sets on the Control Center app.

It faxes and copies in b/w and color. Quality of copies is good and very fast when you use the document feeder. It appears to be faster then the small copy machines at my local copy shop.

I love that the printer both has a duplex document feeder and can also prints duplex (or scans, faxs, copies duplex).

Consumables are more expensive than for instance in a HP laser printer. However, the purchasing price of the Brother is unbeatable.

Bottom line is that this product is as good as it gets in a multi-functional printer. After using it for a couple of months I am asking myself how I ever could have lived with out it. No more trips to the copy shop and savings for express mail.

These seem to be great machines when they work. Unfortunately, ours doesn''t. The machine generates random vertical streaks of yellow and cyan across printed pages. Solid colors are often printed as blotchy and uneven. Brother tech support has acknowledged that they are having these type of problems with this particular model. We''ve tried changing print cartridges (twice) and the problem still exists.

It''s now been 6 weeks since we first reported the problem and still no resolution from Brother. Escalations have been met with promises of call backs followed by silence. Emails to support go unanswered. It appears that Brother products and support are hits and misses. In this particular case, all misses.
