I had HIGH hopes for this machine but so disappointed now...

It looked great, all matte black, square looks, clean line, nice "looking" LCD touch panel, $5 black cartridge.

I purchase this locally in Vancouver and had to exchange several times to get a working one. On initial purchase, the printer would turn on but never finish the boot cycle so I exchange it for another one. After the exchange, the second would not even turn on, exchange again. The third one finally worked but after using the product, I returned it. The printer menu was slow, hard to setup. Download additional printer apps was tedious. Even basic function required separate app to make it friendly to use. Also the WebUI was slow and unresponsive at most time during configuration. Their tech support was literally useless since the first two printer could not even turn on correctly.

Using Mac OS X 10.6.8

The computer software was buggy. The printer drivers seems OK but the firmware update was a POS. It could not update the firmware either thru USB or WiFi or LAN. I had to use a PC to update the firmware

Using iPhone or iPad

First you need to download the app "Lexprint" for printer thru iPhone or iPad. Second, the app will only print pictures or webpages. This is not how Airprint should. It does NOT allow printing from PDF or e-mail....very limiting

Honestly, I support Mac & PC at work and it took me over 2 days to configure this printer properly..two thumbs down!!!

Additionally, this was suppose to replace the Pro905 which had a five year warranty...why does the Pro915 only have one year warranty??

I bought one of these because we had them at work. Then when the ones at work started to go down and lexmark wanted me to tell them what was wrong with them I told them forget it and had them all removed and trashed they were replaced by anything that wasn''t made by Lexmark. So on to the one at home. It kept losing the connection on my network and would take years to boot up I would have to spend three hours every time I wanted to print something setting it back up again and today it finally lost it all. It read that all of my cartridges were empty then it said it would not communicate with the cartridges. I tried a couple of new ones and still no luck. Their technical support is non existent because they are closed and even when they are open you get someone who can barely speak english and reads from a script. So after finally being done with it i smashed it into as many bits as I could and sent it to rot in the dump. I will never buy another one of their products ever again. Thanks lexmark for wasting my money and time.

I was really hoping that after a year or so...Lexmark would have addressed their massive QA issues lately. Trust me folks, as of this writing, trust the BAD reviews far more than the good ones. I have been fighting with this thing for two days...NOTHING works right on it. The software is a total mess, freezes all the time AFTER all the firmware and drive updates (come on Lexmark, after a year you can''t even update your drivers in the box?). Had to try to set up 3 times before it worked. I STILL can get the wireless to work. This is all with OSX and airports...NO EXCUSE Lexmark...this is just terrible, crappy software all the way around.

The printer itself seems ok...but its worthless since I can''t actually get it to do anything.

Their problems extend to their smart app website...which works maybe 10% of the time...the rest of the time everything just times out there.

DO NOT BUY this if you want your sanity. There is NO EXCUSE Lexmark for this printer and software to STILL be this terrible out of the box.

Mine is going back in the box and back to amazon...Lexmark owes me quite a lot of wasted time messing around with this POC...

This printer has good quality print, is fast and convenient. It does everything I''d like when it works, and for that, I would have given it four stars. It''s certainly better than the Epson CX4800 I traded it for. But it has numerous annoying little problems. It''s installed on my network by direct connection to my router via an Ethernet cable. Every now and then, the screen goes blank and can''t be revived. It says "entering sleep mode" for 5 or 10 minutes, but continues to allow printing. Online chat told me to shut the printer off and remove the power module, then turn it back on. That solved the problem, but when it happened again, they told me the same thing. Obviously, doing a cold restart every time the printer locks up isn''t a solution for a network printer that may be some distance from the computer issuing the print command. A second call told me to download and install the latest firmware. I did that, and now the printer never enters "sleep" mode, even overnight, although it''s set to enter sleep mode after 10 minutes. I''m convinced there are bugs in the software. I wouldn''t buy this printer again.

I am not very pleased with this printer. The paper always jams , when it prints the paper does not eject smoothly and gets hung up close to the front causing paper jams . When I put an SD card in the printer to export photos to my computer some of them always get messed up , distorted - they never all export and save properly

The touch screen sucks too , we don''t need these stupid touch screens on everything , I would prefer the old fashioned buttons

I had a lot of printers over the years . This model is not an improvement over previous Lexmark models.

Of the more than 20 or so printers I have owned this is the best yet. The printer arrived along with a power cord, a telephone cord, an instruction sheet with 8 clearly defined steps to set up the printer for use, 4 individually wrapped ink cartridges (Black, Cyan, Magenta & Yellow), a software disk, a quick guide manual, an instruction sheet for Apple users and a packet of paper samples consisting of 2 sheets of paper.

There are two options in setting up the printer. One option is a USB cable connection to the PC. The other option is a wireless setup. I chose the wireless option which has two options as well. One is to use the USB cable for the initial setup and then remove it for wireless operation. The other option is to setup wireless without the USB cord. I chose the latter. The instructions directed the insertion of the software disk. This began a clearly written series of instruction pages which ended with a completely setup printer whose features all worked to perfection. This was an experience which I never had with any other printer. No fuss, no muss just easy does it and everything worked as it should.

Kudos to Epson for not only a top notch printer but for a rarely seen set of instructions written in English with no misspellings and easy to use. Many vendors, such as Dewalt, for just one example, seem to thumb their noses at providing useful and readable manuals. Epson is at the head of the class with this printer.

Let me start by saying I got this printer in November, so I''ve used it for about two months before writing this review.

I work in the IT industry and I have personally owned or used hundreds of printer brands/models. I have owned wireless all-in-one devices from various big brands including HP, Lexmark, Epson, and Brother. While most of them are comparable I have to give Epson the nod here. They really outdid themselves with this model. It is a full multi-function device, providing document/photo printing, copier and fax functions, wirelessly and all at reasonable price.

Set up is a breeze. Install the ink cartridges, then simply power it up and follow the menu to join it to your wireless network, or if you prefer, connect it via USB cable (NOT included) to your PC. The printer is compatible with Apple AirPrint and Google CloudPrint.

The printer tray holds 250 pages, much more than some other models. Some folks may not care about that, but to me its a big deal. I hate having to feed the printer every couple of days because its out of paper.

Its print production is rated at 15 pages per minute (black) and 7.2 ppm in color. Copier speed is 12 ppm/5.5 ppm black/color. It''s optical scan resolution is 2400 dpi. For sheer speed, the 545 is great for this type of device.

It is an average size for this family of devices, 17.6" wide x 14.2" deep x 9.1" high.

The included cartridges are the 126 model standard Epson cartridges. They also sell a model 127 which is higher capacity. The color cartridges are separate instead of combined, always a nice feature compared to throwing out a tri-color cartridge just because one of the three colors is empty.

After using the product for a couple of months, I can say I really love it. It is one of the best all-in-one devices I''ve used. I''ve had no jams, no memory issues or other system hang ups (which I have had with some HP devices), and in general its really a nice product.

Color photos are very nice quality and the ink does come out dry, whereas on some HPs I end up having to put the photos aside for a minute to completely dry. Not a big deal, but just noting it.

The warranty from Epson is one year, which includes phone support.

I read the reviews on here and was surprised... someone said "hard to set up". All I can say is "Did you remember to turn it on?" I took it out of the box, plugged it into the wall, used the menu to attach to my wireless network. It said connected. I walked over to my iMac and added the printer (worked great). Then i took out my iPad and iPhone and printed to it using AirPrint technology. No hassle, no confusion. Maybe the last guy had a dud. Great printer!

Shopper Beware. Overall a good printer if all you are printing is on NORMAL paper weight, the thickness of copy paper. The Workforce series can NOT handle papers heaver than 24lbs in weight, which is the basic copy paper weight. Paper weight is an indication of the paper''s thickness which is the culprit.

The printer itself is terrific! The feature set for the money can''t be beat. It prints,scans, copies, faxes, prints double-sided, and has an automatic document feeder. Photo printing is not gallery quality, but 4x6 prints are just fine. And this machine is FAST, as it claims. The paper drawer,while large, must be completely removed to add or change paper and is a little finicky.

The installation and setup was very complex hence the four stars instead of five. But for less than $100 at a Big Box store and given it''s features and performance, I''m very pleased.

I use AutoCAD at work and occasionally at home. My hubby and I jumped when we saw this printer: just had to get it! The print is as good as on the 11x17 HP inkjet at work, and this 11x17 scanner is a better size than any of the workplace ones (although I haven''t used that function yet).

Hubby managed to hook up the 6490 to our home wifi without help, and no, he didn''t set our wifi up originally, and no, he doesn''t really understand how wifi works. In fact, hubby is visually handicapped! I''d rate ease of installation to wifi as 5 stars. The only glitch we had was that we didn''t know we had a firewall, but the install disc talked us though that step too.

So now I''m sitting in bed typing on my Dell 1520 XP and sending to the printer in the other room. I don''t know how it goes through ink, but will post back if I have an issue about that or anything else in the future.

Edit added 9-6-08: We just changed the first ink cartridge. I''ve been printing mainly with black, but also did about 300 very small (2"x3") photos with lots of sky. We managed 700 copies on the first black cartridge as far as I can tell. Cyan is at 50% and magenta and yellow don''t really show as being low yet. The machine has been beeping for the last week warning us black was low, but only today did it quit printing due to lack of ink. The last page it did was as good as the first, so I have to wonder exactly how low that ink was when it quit on us. At any rate: we had no wasted prints from low ink and it was nice enough to tell us it had stopped. Can''t say that with the HP at work!

I didn''t actually buy the printer from Amazon. I bought this hulking device at Office Depot because it came with a $100 rebate. But the overall list price is definitely worth it. I mostly got it because it has a large area scanner that I need for my pencil work.

Listing the features would be useless since there is already a description of what it does above. So i''ll go over the pros and cons.

Pros

-Very large scanner. Largest i''ve seen at an affordable price and common availability.

-LCD screen. Decent resolution and overall the right size.

-Interface. It is very easy to navigate through menus and do what you want.

-Wi-Fi. Truly a god-sent. We have 4 computers at home hooked up to this puppy.

-Large print outs. 11x17. Woo!

-Fast scanning at multiple resolutions.

Cons

-Software. The package comes bundled with a picture and scanning software. It is overall very slow and I had to reinstall it a couple times because of how unstable it was. This was however on a mac. It might work fine on windows. But it''s not mandatory to have it, and if your serious about your work you use other software anyway.

-Print quality. Not the best in the world i''ll admit. Colors aren''t as saturated as I would have liked. I don''t know if it not being a laser printer has anything to do with it.

-Big and bulky. Consider your home or office space before spending your hard earned cash on this one. It''s not a space saver, i''ll tell you that much.

-The text on the LCD screen can a times be very small. Not a problem for me, but can sometimes be a problem for older people. (my parents)

-Printing process can take a while over a wi-fi network. Not painfully long, but enough to take notice.

-Fax function because I have yet to use it.

For me there were three major factors in making this purchase. Scanning in large sketches, printing large documents, and wi-fi. If your only going to print on standard 8.5x11 then go for something cheaper. But for an artist like me who needs a larger scanner and appreciates all the extra stuff that comes with it, I could not think of anything better for the price.

I have had this printer for a couple of weeks now and overall I''m very pleased. I''m not big fan of inkjet printers, and the fact that it wasn''t a laser printer was my #1 hesitation before purchasing this model. I sat on the fence -until Amazon.com had it on sale for just under $200, that is, shipped free to my door. Then how could I say no?

If what you really want is a printer to output a lot of text documents for business, etc., you probably still want to look into laser printers. This model''s big advantage, however, is that it can both print and scan tabloid-size documents (11x17" or A3). If you want that capability, you won''t find a laser model for less than ten times the cost of the MFC-6490CW.

Bear in mind, this printer really is very big. It''s almost as big as a heavy-duty office printer. It won''t share a desk with your monitor and keyboard comfortably, and if you use a laptop it will loom over you like a monolith -so make sure you have space for it.

Setup was easy enough, although you may need to be a little savvy to successfully share the printer with several PCs over a network. (I found it was safest to assign a static IP address to the printer and manually configure each PC to search for it at that address, rather than relying on the automatic setup.)

Another reviewer said you can''t use wireless and wired networking at the same time. To clarify, the printer will only use one network interface at a time -if you enable the wireless networking on the printer it will disable the Ethernet and vice versa. But it makes no difference; the point is to use whichever interface is most convenient for you. If you plug the printer directly into the Ethernet port on a wireless router, you WILL still be able to access the printer from wireless devices. Likewise, you won''t need to buy a wireless card for your desktop PC if you set up the printer on WiFi. Your wireless router will automatically bridge the wired and wireless networks. The printer is just giving you options.

As for print quality, sorry folks, text output is NOT as good as a laser. It''s not as fast, it''s not as sharp, it''s not as dark, it''s not as crisp -bottom line, a laser printer is going to yield nicer-looking text documents.

The again, text quality is very readable, and normal-quality output on plain paper is quick enough for my needs. I realized that most of my prints are for my own files, or for me to mark up with a pen. Who am I trying to impress? Those of us who can still remember the days of dot-matrix printers should have no complaints. I would consider prints at normal quality mode to be fully acceptable for business use. The text becomes very sharp indeed if you use high-quality inkjet paper and one of the printer''s photo modes, but that''s too slow and expensive to be practical.

I was pleasantly surprised by the graphics output, which I found to be rich, smooth, and clear. Outputting photos to plain paper showed noticeable banding, but that''s to be expected. On the other hand, I printed out a document that had lots of areas of flat color and lots of gradients onto high-quality 36 pound matte inkjet paper, and on that job I noticed ZERO, repeat ZERO banding in either the gradients or the flat areas. If anything, the colors came out a little too dark and saturated, but I suspect that I used an overly optimistic print mode for the particular paper stock I had on hand. I have yet to try printing photographs at maximum quality onto glossy photo stocks, but I have no reason to doubt the quality of the output.

Brother''s "Innobella" inks seem to be a considerable improvement on those of the last inkjet printer I owned. I printed out a page of text on plain paper and on 36-pound inkjet paper, then threw a bunch of water onto the pages. The plain-paper sheet did seem to blur a bit, but not as much as I expected. Black ink seemed to survive the test well, while colors bled quite a lot. On the heavy ink jet paper, however, there was almost no change once the inks dried. I would actually include the sheet that got wet in with other pages in a presentation; it survived that well. Laser printers still have the advantage if you plan to take your prints out in the rain, but prints from this inkjet are no sissies.

As others have noted, the printer isn''t smart enough to know which kind of paper is in which tray. You need to configure it yourself, either on the panel on the front of the printer or via the configuration software. That''s a small price to pay, however, and an example of the many minor compromises that Brother has made to keep the price of this printer at rock bottom. More annoying is the fact that there''s no easy way to feed a single envelope without emptying out a paper tray.

There is no automatic duplex scanning, copying, or printing, but I have never owned a printer that would do these things. Unlike others, the automatic document feeder (ADF) worked smoothly for me.

The scanner was a treat. I had a low-cost tabloid scanner already (Mustek A3 USB) but this Brother scanner is far better. It''s fast, even when scanning over the network. And it''s clever -you don''t even have to initiate a scan on your PC. You can put a document onto the scanner, push the button, and have the scanner send the output TO your computer. On a network, you can even pick WHICH computer to send the scan to. The included OCR software read a two-page document with zero errors. The only minus I''ve noticed is that the scanner drivers don''t come with any kind of descreening filters, so you''ll need third-party software to clean up scans from magazines or other four-color images.

On the whole, there are probably better choices if all you want to do is print letter-sized pages, but if you''re in the market for tabloid printing or scanning, this device really can''t be beat. Don''t let the low price fool you -the MFC-6490CW is anything but "cheap." My one caveat might be that its plastic construction is too fragile for a high-volume office environment, but you can''t have everything. I believe this printer would serve any small business well.

One more note: Brother has actually included high-capacity inkjet cartridges with this printer, rather than the half-full cartridges you get from some manufacturers. A complete set of all four replacement cartridges goes for $50. "Compatible" off-brand cartridges for this printer are readily available at a significant discount, though you may sacrifice print quality if you go that route. Look for that word, "compatible," so you''re sure you know what you''re getting.

I had this machine for 2 whole weeks when it just powered off and NEVER turned on again. Problem with Brother is you either get a great product or a lemon!!

So I called them and emailed them, "tried plugging it in different outlets," and at their request took it to the service center (30 miles away). The service center ordered new parts, then ordered more parts when those didn''t solve it. Then I waited several weeks while the part (a power pack!) was on backorder. When it came in, and the machine STILL did not power on, is when the real fun with BROTHER began!

Every time I or the service center rep called BROTHER, we would get all kinds of different answers, lies, stall tactics...

My absolute favorite, however, happened after BROTHER insisted that I speak with them again (as if the service center did not know what they were talking about) and explaining to them that the machine is completely dead with a black screen, they wanted me to "print trouble shooting reports from the machine and fax it to them from the machine" that DOES NOT TURN ON!!!

BRILLIANT!!

So, since I originally contacted them on November 24th, and here it is December 31st.....I STILL DON''T HAVE MY PRODUCT OR MY MONEY!!!!

Unfortunate for this scanner, I own a Cardscan 700c which does a great job at scanning business cards and has very slick software which builds the contact list, imports or exports contacts from/to popular programs, creates entries that have the front and back of the cards, has drag and drop functionality, and more.

I purchased this Genius ColorPage BR600 as a gift for my better half who recently became a Real estate agent. Of course, she has seen my Cardscan in action in the past. Her comment about this Genius scanner was "you could tell its a lower priced and inexpensive scanner. If the print on the card is in anyway faint, this scanner will not pick it up". Also, she has business cards that have black backgrounds with white text (business cards of the agents where she works). This scanner can not scan and OCR them, but the Cardscan scanner does well with these cards.

If cost is the most important thing to you, then this is a good product. But if you are looking for a scanner which can scan almost anything you give it, you should spend more and get a Cardscan product.

At $30, this biz card reader was inexpensive enough (compared to other card readers) that I decided to buy it to see what it can do before making a larger investment in another reader. It''s barely worth the $30, however, because it''s below basic. That is, it reads almost no font other than Ariel or Times Roman-type fonts. With fancy fonts, forget it. You must type the info into the fields. The name "ColorPage" is truly misleading because this thing won''t read most cards that are anything but white or very light colors, such as beige. If it''s color, it can''t read it (so the name really irritates me). If the card is laid out length-wise rather than the standard way, the reader often gets confuses and can''t read it properly, forcing you to type the info. A major problem is if the card has any handwriting at all on it (such as many that I must process because people add personal email addresses, etc.), the reader can''t handle this and gives you Greek. So, you end up typing in the info. Last, you cannot add any fields to what''s provided, which are insufficient. So it misses additional info that must be handled manually in your database program or wherever else.

SUMMARY: If you have many standard, light-colored biz cards to process, this unit will do the job at the very basic level and save you some time. All other cards you must handle manually.

I used this product for the first time recently and was extremely pleased with the physical printing process and clarity. I use a Lexmark color laser printer set for label printing and the cards came out clean...even with me printing on both sides. I used the manual feed and put each sheet through once for the front of the card and again for the back of the card. I don''t yet know what the longevity of the print is, but I''m not too concerned with that, since I believe most people use business cards for a reference to input the information into their own electronic system and toss the card into a desk drawer, file, or the trash can. I followed the directions on the sheet, ''fold this side inward'', which it indicates is very important, and they just snapped apart from the outer edge of the sheet and each other. In comparison, some cards I''ve had before from professional printing companies were on slightly heavier cardstock, but these have a good presentation and certainly fit the bill for my present needs. Based on my viewpoint of a business card''s purpose this day and age, I don''t know that I will ever switch to professionally printed cards so long as these stay reasonably priced and maintain their quality. If I do switch to professionally printed cards later, these will serve well for printing temporary cards for new hires.

I purchased this to print business cards for myself and for my wife. I used a color laserjet printer (HP Color LJ 3550) to print on these cards. The result was very impressive: The cards printed on these were indistinguishable from the original professional cards. What this means to me was that I can modify the card to my liking, such as print on the back side of the card. Also, the clean-edge is a very key feature of this product. No more rough edges from the perforations.

First, I downloaded and installed Avery Design Pro from the avery website. Next, I aligned the printer though the software. Then, I designed the master layout, and then printed it out. Voila! The cards came out beautifully! My suggestion is to first print out on regular paper first, and see if the printed cards align properly with the sheets. Mine were aligned perfectly, but I had to help my colleague troubleshoot with her printout, which took just a 5 minutes more.

Next, I played around with the design of the back of the card. After figuring out what I wanted (which was just a simple picture to go on the upper right corner of the back) I created a JPEG of the logo, uploaded it, positioned and resized it, and then I flipped the sheet on the manual feed tray, and printed perfectly! There was no smearing out of the printer, and also the images/text did not smear when I ran my finger on it. Of course, this may vary from printer to printer, and user to user.

I liked it so much that I made my own personal cards, just for the fun of it. I''ve also been successful using this on an inkjet printer, but I let the printout sit for a minute before handling it (in case the ink was still wet). I liked the result from the laserjet better, but it is nice to know that I can use these on an inkjet as well. I believe there is a different set of cards that was designed for printing with an inkjet printer.

Overall, I am quite pleased with this. It is easy to print on both sides, and the clean edge makes these cards come out looking very professional. Highly recommended. Fully deserves the 5-star rating.

They''re great when you print one or maybe two sheets at a time. If you print more than one at a time, you get this weird plastic outcropping. I guess that plastic is what holds the cards together, and lets them have a clean edge. When they are printed multiple sheets at one time, you the plastic melts slightly, and seems to stick to the edges. Not exactly clean edge anymore, is it? ;)

I mostly print commercially, but like the option of printing a few things on the fly at home. Very happy with the results with my HP setup.

This is the third Canon Pixma printer we have owned. The first two were blown out by power surges (we have extraordinarily unreliable and variable power in the islands).

The first Pixma printer we bought is something of a legend for it''s inexpensive cartridges which could be purchased retail (OEM) for less than $10 apiece. When we bought that, we already had several other printers in the house, at least 1 unused. The issue we had with each of the others (a Dell, an HP and an Epson) was that the printer cartridges cost as much as, or more than, the printer itself. If you already have a printer, you know that the manufacturers are using the Gillette razor model; pricing the printers low, and gauging on the ink. The cost for a replacement cartridge for my HP laser was around $200, the Epson, around $100, and the Dell (which came free with the computer) cost over $100. Since this is a home printer we cared less about print quality, and more aboiut reasonable operating cost. i have not yet printed any photos and so can not comment on print quality in that regard, though Canon claims it is a high point.

I will say that the print quality on our first 2 Pixmas was somewhat less than ideal. I was able to remedy that by printing on high (photo quality). On our new printer, the MP 490, the print quality is better, BUT, unfortunately the cartridges cost more. They still cost at least 1/3 less than those for comparable printers, but are not as reasonable as on prior models. This is what took a star off in my rating.

In terms of features and ease of use:

this printer fixes an annoying issue we had with the other 2 pixmas. the cartridges are easier to change. You no longer have to hold the door up or have it hover at an awkward angle.

My kids like the digital read out, and, I will note for those new to the line; Canon printers keep track of ink use. The software logs cartridge changes and lets you know when you are running low on either (black or multi-color) ink. Often this is a bit off. that is, you can get a few more prints after it tells you it is out. This is a nice feature. I have had the experience of running out of ink while printing a 100 page document on my HP, only finding out that half the pages came up blank after the entire document ran.

On wimdows machines, set up is very easy: plug & play. It will work without loading extra printer drivers. I can not comment on this with regard to macs, since w do not have one.

You can switch to scan or print with the touch of a button. Both of these functions work flawlessly.

The other feature this machine offers over our old pixmas is a card reader. You can take a card out of your camera and print direct from the machine without going through a computer. (Most of the newer printers offer this feature, so this will set it apart in comparison to last gen. printers, rather than other brands).

It also has a very small footprint; not much larger than is required for a letter size scanner. It is not as small as a portable, but very compact for a desk top printer.

All in all it is a VERY nice printer for the money. We got it for an insanely low price during Amazon''s ''black friday week" sale. Even at full retail it costs roughly the same or less than comparable printers. The primary reason we bought this was for the lower price ink cartridges. In that regard, the saving are not quite what they were on older models of the Pixma, but are still less costly than for other brands. We have owned Pixma printers for more than 10 years now and have been very happy with them overall, or I would not have purchased a third.

Update:

After 6 months of usi9ng this printer I needed to replace the ink. (note: this printer is attached to my childrens'' machine and hence does not get as much use as mu own). i am now substantially less happy with the printer and probably would not buy another. If I were writing the review now, I''d give it 3 instead of 4 stars. Why?

1) Replacing the ink cost more than the printer.

2) When the black ink ran out we were unable to use the printer evewn though there was still ink in the color cartridge.

While the ink may cost less than some it should not cost as much as the printer!

Canon has been advertising that they were the solution to overpriced ink. Instead, it seems, they''ve decided that this is a pretty good way to make money.

This is Way far from the perfect printer.

I''m now shopping for another OLD Canon for my kids. My old Canon is still running on $10 cartridges (less if I use generic!)

I do not want to buy ink which costs as much as a new printer every 6 months! I hope Canon hears this. they have just lost a heretofore loyal customer.

I just bought this printer and I LOVE it. It''s the perfect all in one printer for home/ small office use. I am a student and wanted an all in one so i could print, copy and scan documents without the stress of using the school''s facilities every time. This printer is exactly what I needed. The print quality is superb. Even photos printed with this printer come out looking just as good as lab quality photos. The colours are vibrant and rich and borderless printing is excellent. Photocopying and scanning quality is really good too. However, printing speed is not the fastest but it doesn''t detract from the beauty of this machine. The printer itself has a small footprint and I love the way everything folds into one compact design and eliminates dust getting trapped inside the printer. Overall, this is a great printer for the price. Note that a usb cord is not included in the package.

I''m using the Canon MP490 at home with a Mac Book Pro Intel Core Duo OSX 10.5.8. I found the set up very straightforward and encountered no problems. As mentioned in another review, the USB cord is not included. Print quality/tone was very good for both photos and plain documents. Color ran a bit to the green end. Scanning and copying were also uncomplicated. Inserting the SD card from my digital camera into the printer immediately brought up the image on the LCD screen, ready to print. iPhoto also started up automatically on my laptop, ready to import the images from the SD card in the printer-very slick. Controls were fairly intuitive as was the menu on the compass control. Print speed was on the slow side, so if your needs require high volume printing, this is probably not the right printer for you. The included software loaded easily and works fairly well. Ink costs are high for OEM replacement cartridge. There are ink refill kits on the web for this model to reduce costs considerably-I have no experience refilling these particular cartridges, but have found it to be very economical in my other Canon and HP printers. I have had the printer for only three days so I cannot speak to its long-term dependability. My initial impression is that the MP490 is an inexpensive, very good quality printer with easy set-up and helpful software. It is ideal for low-volume home use.

Addendum 10/3/2010about two months ago I began having problems with the printer shutting down during long (more than 3 or 4 page) jobs. This happens intermittently, but is quite annoying when it does-you have to re-print the whole job. Refilling the ink cartridges is fairly simple initially, but failed to work after 2 or 3 fills. I would no longer recommend this printer.

I Needed a new printer for general photo AND document use to replace older HP deskjet 900 series printer. Used several sources (magazines, personal,internet, store, etc.) as research and considered other brands, even considered getting a photo-only printer. Downside with most photoprinters is that you are limited to 4x6 inch prints only, nothing else. HP ink cartridges also cost more, but they have in recent productions narrowed this cost gap with such printers as their photosmart 7000 series as read in a consumer magazine. Generally, the top three printer makers (Canon, HP, and Epson) make some excellent printers. Various factors influence choice, for example, ink costs, speed, text and photo quality, features, size, style, etc. I considered the new canon pixma printers, but they were HUGE. In summary I chose this printer because it uses HP''s new Vivera inks (which are supposed to be an improvement from the last generation of inks), it''s dimensions were medium size (shorter in height than most in its class), it is Wi-fi ready, and styling was new--its actually a very new model. Conlusion: It was a bit challenging as an average level computer user to set up the wi-fi conncection (as expected with wi-fi issues), but once set up, it works great as a wi-fi network printer. Texts prints were sharp. Photo prints were satisfactory, almost like lab quality (very impressive for a deskjet series printer) and it is quieter than my older printer in operation. The only downside I have for now is that there are only two slots for ink cartridges. HP has come out with a new photo gray ink (#100)for grayscale and enhanced black and white photos, but I would have to switch it with the regular black (#94 or #96) ink cartridge IF I decided to use it (although using the regular black ink will do for most users). To add some confusion, another new ink (#99) can be used for better photo prints (enables 6 ink printing) as an option over HP''s regular black ink. There are no card slots but it is picture bridge enabled. I almost forgot to mention how great the included HP photo software is to use. Again, it is for an average user, and features red-eye reduction and other quick fix-it tools for those who don''t want to spend more than a minute to edit photo prints.

I had an HP932C printer for many years that I''d been happy with, but it gave up the ghost recently and needed to be replaced. Since the 932C was a parallel port printer, that meant I had a parallel port wireless print server, too. So I could either (a) buy a new parallel port printer, of which the choices these days are very limited, (b) buy a USB printer and a new wireless print server, or (c) buy a printer like the HP 6840 with built-in Wi-Fi.

I chose to get the HP 6840 and I''m glad I did. Setup is quick and hassle-free. The only thing confusing (to me, anyway) was that the setup wizard leads you to believe that you can do the initial setup via USB, and I thought I would be able to do that and specify my wireless specifications as part of that (SSID, WEP key, etc.). WRONG!

However, if you''ve got WinXP SP2 (which you OUGHT to have, anyway, if you''re on WinXP), and a USB jump drive (borrow one if you need to!) the wireless setup couldn''t be more painfree. Just run the WinXP Wireless Network Setup wizard and tell it to save the network settings to the USB drive. Then plug the drive into the PictBridge port on the front of the printer. In about 10 seconds, the lights flash, and you''re done. How hard was that?

The printer is a lot faster than my old 932C and the print quality is great. It''s nice to have borderless printing for photos now, which I didn''t have before.

I''ve always been happy with HP printers, and I have every reason to expect that this one will be no exception.

I needed a new printer and had considered the previous generation wireless printer from HP, but the reviews I read failed to convince me that I would be satisfied with it''s speed and print quality.

When the HP 6840 came out I was very interested, and after reading various reviews about it''s performance and print quality I decided it was what I was looking for.

I have the Linksys wireless G router, and an HP notebook with wireless G. I found the setup instructions to be easy to read and follow. I have read several complaints about needing to plug the printer into the router with an ethernet cable (which is supplied) during initial setup, but this is a minor issue, and once it''s completed you don''t have to do it again.

The wireless connectivity is very good, and print speed and quality are very good. I am very happy with this printer and highly recommend it! I bought it from CompUsa for $169.00.

After many hours trying to get the printer connected wirelessly, it now works just fine. The HP install CD would not complete with WEP or WPA encryption enabled on my Linksys WRT54G wireless router. The secret was to disable all encryption and finish the installation, then later change the router and printer to either WEP or WPA encryption security. Now it works just great and also provides bi-directional communication so you can see the ink level gage and other info. I''d give it 5 stars if the install had been easier.
