Still the genius of the HP system is that it always works, and always works well--at least many more hours and copies than historically we have ever had the right to expect from a printer. and TOTALLY in a different class than ink jet technology.
So if you want that reliability and error-free reproduction, you guarantee it by buying original HP toner cartridges from HP.
However, the technology is not rocket science. So a good refurbished cartridge can be every bit as reliable as an original, fit exactly the same, and the corona wire and drum can be replaced. However, this adds quite a bit to the cost, and they don''t need to be replaced as often as the toner wears out--anywhere from 2x to 10x less frequently, probably only the people who refurbish cartridges could tell us for sure and it may depend on the smoothness of the paper you use, etc. Consequently, often a refurbished cartridge is going to have had the drum and corona wire inspected, but not replaced. In fact, if used cartridges are available enough and cheap enough they might never reuse cartridges where the drum or corona wire are damaged. Some companies might even have a lower standard than HP--imagine that! They are after all charging less.
So what I do, is a) try to buy refurbished cartridges from as reliable companies as possible, b) always have an original on hand as a back up in case anything goes wrong, and c) only buy refurbished if the price difference is considerable, say less than half.
Also, this particular cartridge is for a very high resolution color laser printer. I''m getting printing-quality copies that are better than what print shops provided some time ago. 3600 dpi in color boggles my mind. I have printing-quality paper (thicker, glossier, whiter stock) for my PR pieces. It looks awesome, and I can print on demand for less than I can order copies (of lower quality actually) from a print shop. I''m not going to compromise the registration of the four toner cartridges and the pristine quality of original toner powder and new drums and wires for a few pennies per copy.
Hence here you see me buying original toner cartridges from HP! (But I don''t always for every printing application. I do buy laser printers from HP whenever possible, because I know how they will last.)

The iPF5100 is a large, high quality printer, capable of output as good as or better than the competition and of more expensive printers. The ink usage is tolerable, and the paper handling is superb. Black and white images on art paper are IMHO best of class.Setup is quite easy. The roll paper unit works very well. Bronzing is no worse, but probably no better than the competition.
There are many who will argue about definition in the complex design of the droplets deposited onto the page, just photographers would over argue over the characteristic grain of various print papers, yet few will be using a magnifying loop to enjoy the artistic quality of a 16x20 print. The point being, the dot pattern looks different than the competition, not worse or better, just different. At any normal viewing distance this is not of question.
Speed is good enough I have not timed output.
There are some quirks with print driver, not difficult, just a little different way of modeling the tasks than others have used.
I have called Canon on occasion with questions and found their support and attitude of help to be top notch.

This printer makes exceptional prints on a wide variety of paper and is built like a tank. However, it''s definitely not for point and shoot hobbyists, or even impatient amateurs.Ink usage seems far less than my comparable epsons, and this printer is never clogged, meaning no wasted paper. However, it takes a while to figure out, and it takes a bit of work. For instance, the media type must be chosen in the driver software as well as on the printer hardware itself to ensure that the right ink, vaccuum settings, etc. are in place.
Moreover, using this means you need a good working knowledge of color profiling, and you should probably add a ColorMunki Photo to your cart, because you''ll want that to make sure your monitor is calibrated, and to produce custom print profiles for the iPF if you don''t use the factory paper and canned profiles (or even if you do).
This thing comes in a box big enough to ship Vlad, his dirt, and a few of his minions, so make sure you have a 6 pack on hand to lure in the local knuckle draggers to help you get it up the stairs. And get a sturdy table to put this 100 pounder on. I used an office task table -but with a file cabinet underneath to keep it standing strong.

I bought this printer at the end of 2008 and have replaced the printheads 3 times. That''s both the right and left heads at 500.00 each. This printer is a print head nightmare! I doubt seriously if I would ever buy another Canon printer. Prints are great, speed is great. Cost of operation is horrible. It is more cost effective to have my work printed out at a vendor then do it in house.I''ve had the IPF 5000 for about 2 years and never been happy with it. First, if you own a mac, it''s a real coin toss as to weather the drivers are going to work. When a new Mac OS comes out, it''s unbelievable how long Canon takes to update the driver. You almost have to keep a dedicated system/computer that you don''t upgrade hooked up to the printer for it to work. When I was finally able to get prints out, the are beautiful. Yesterday (Sept 1st, 2009) I had a technician out because I was getting a "carriage motion error." Turns out the replacement parts would be over $900. It''s a $1300 machine. For $1300 I would expect more than 2 years of limited output. For a "pro-level" printer, I would look elsewhere. Canon doesn''t give enough support to warrant the price.Boise Fireworx Color Copy/Laser Paper (MP2201-CY) Save 63% off

I do wish there was a better picture of the actual color. With the name Crackling Canary, I was expecting it to be brighter. Think more like legal pad yellow.
That said, the price was so good that I think I will use this paper again even though the color was less vibrant then I hoped for.

Sure would like to find out what the color actually is for each of these Boise Fireworx papers. You can''t tell at all from the small circle in the small photo for each color. For example, what the hell is boomin'' buff? I''m just supposed to be able to picture it? The yellow looks pale but "crackling canary" would indicate otherwise. In the product description, Amazon could describe the color if they''re going to post such a lazy photo. I went to the Boise paper website to see if they listed/showed what each of their colors were but can''t find it there either. I shouldn''t have to hunt the internet to see what a color is for the paper. Open up a ream, take out a few sheets, set them beside the rest of the ream, and take a picture so the customer can actually see what they''re purchasing.Read Best Reviews of Boise Fireworx Color Copy/Laser Paper (MP2201-CY) Here

Besides the speed, what motivated me to retire my many years old LaserWriter (AppleTalk, pre-ethernet) is the availabilty of the duplex unit (available separately and at extra cost unfortunately) to automatically produce 2-sided printing (again very speedy). Worth the extra cost... (with the price break amazon was giving approx one month ago, almost a freebie considering current pricing).
Can''t vouch for the Postscript emulator one way or the other at this point...

My company has owned the 4200 model for several years with zero problems. We''ve only had the new model for one month and have had no problems so far. We are still using the old model in another capacity. These are great business printers.

This printer is the least expensive true enterprise level, network ready, black and white only laserjet. I find it a great value for my small business. Easy set-up, trouble free performance, reliability, durability. Low cost per page. We print about 5000 pages a month from our entire network to this printer. Set up is easy for persons familiar with network printers. Printer IP address will change when components of the network power-cycle or after a power outage, due to the router assigning new IP addresses. It may be possible to fix the printers IP, but it''s not worth the trouble for me. The printer will print its IP address so you can re-configure the desktops to find it after a power outage.I got this printer about 5 yrs ago as our main office printer. At the time, it cost $1200 each. We print about 300 sheets a day. After 5+ yrs of abuse, it''s still working like a charm, never did a tune up or repair on it. We don''t even use factory cartidges, and it still works perfectly fine. Now at $699, it''s a great deal, got a 2nd one to split up the workload. Usage is about 1000 sheets a day, so splitting it up works perfectly.
The original cartridges are a bit expensive, at $180 each for the high yield. We been buying the refurbished ones on Amazon for around $70 each, works great, yield is about the same. Only bad thing is those typically would leak the black toner if you shake it when it''s almost out, so make sure you DO NOT shake it, I learned the hard way.
When you get printers, trust HP, each one in the office has their own HP laser printers, from small $80 ones to these big ones, never once did any of these break. The only Non-HP we have is a color laserjet from Brother, that was on sale for $299 so I couldn''t resist. But overall, cannot be more happy with HP laserjets.
