This is the second Canon PIXMA printer that I''ve owned. I gave my other PIXMA to my mama-in-law and she''s been happy with it.

Right out of the box, this printer was easy to setup. Remove the packaging, follow a few steps and Windows 7 was up and running. There was some bloat-ware that came on the CD and I opted not to install some of the additional photo editing utilities. Just something to be aware of. You need to install most of the packages if you want to scan images.

The nice part about this printer is that the paper loads horizontally on the bottom of the printer. This eliminates that curl that you get in paper in some printers where the paper tray is in the rear of the printer and vertical.

Another huge feature on a small printer like this is that it duplexes. I really hate going through extra paper and it''s very easy to find the duplex option. It''s been working like a charm.

That being said, I wish I could give you more details in this review regarding the card reading, and the scanning. I haven''t used the scan very much. Wireless setup was a piece of cake with Windows. No issues there. I have used the copy feature a few times and that worked quite well.

I can''t speak too much regarding the ink usage. All ink jet printers seem to just suck ink dry if you print constantly. At least this is split into a single black cartridge and another one for color. It''s still easy to go through a ton of ink without doing much.

All in all, this printer does a lot of things quite well. I definitely recommend it.

I found this printer easy to set up on my wireless network, and it prints like a charm from my iPad and iPhone. I also enjoy being able to scan images and send them to my iMac wirelessly. The duplex printing feature saves on paper, and I found the drivers for Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) on Canon''s website. I don''t have a landline, so I haven''t tried the fax feature.

So why not five stars? First, the scanner does not have a document feeder. To merit five stars, not only should the scanner have an automatic document feeder, but the document feeder should support duplexing. After all, the printer does.

Second, the printer uses one cartridge for all of the color inks. This means that when you run out of one color, you have to buy the ink for all the colors. Granted, this generates more ink sales for Canon, but at the expense of your pocketbook, and it''s such a waste.

This printer replaces a somewhat old HP that had been a good performer for home use. I like Canon products and have had good luck with them so when this printer came out with a high rating I bought it. Print quality is good and the options available are very good. To have an all in one photo/copier/printer is great for home use. Ink cartridges are more reasonably priced than HP and have options for tank size/capacity which can save money. The printer is very noisy however and takes a long time to warm up. During print jobs it will stop and tell me to wait momentarily while it does some undexplained function. Lots of clattering and movement in the printer. Good printer but annoying with the slowness and noise.

I am a big fan of Canon printers. My past 4 printers have all been Canon. The print quality is always fantastic and this is no different. I highly suggest using Canon branded photo paper for the best photo printing results.

As for set up, it is very easy. Wireless is a little bit trickier than USB, but still easy to go and get up and running. I use a Mac and don''t install the included software. I find printing installs by itself and I use Image Capture for scanningwhich also works great. If you Mac does not see the printer or scanner you might have to turn to the CD for drivers.

I have two complaints about this printer.

1. The ink color ink is the older style of an all in one cartridge. Instead of individual ink tanks for color printing you have one cartridge. I find this wastes a lot of ink. However, my grandmother hates single ink cartridges and prefers her color printers to have one color cartridge.

2. iOS printing needs and Airprint update. True you can print photos using the Canon app on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad, but that is very limiting. I don''t understand why Canon (who has other Airprint printers) can''t release a firmware update to make this a true airprint printer so you do not have to print through an app or other means.

I am not a fan of on board photo editing and haven''t really played with those features much. However, if you want a great all-in-one printer that is wireless this is an inexpensive option.

I have used this machine for more than one month, and came to an important conclusion that this machine itself is a pretty decent one, but in the long run this printer will cost you lots of money for alternating the inks, which are relatively more costly than other brand inks. This machine uses inks incredibly a lot, and this means that you have to alternate this expensive ink cartridge quite often, and you need to spend a lot of money for maintaining this machine. This must be a big loss in the long run. I am writing this critical review, because this machine is too overrated now in Amazon, warning students or heavy users of printing not to take this one. You may think that this machine is a good deal in terms of price right now, but once you take a long-term perspective, this printer must cost you a lot. So this machine is not so attractive as you may expect or the ad seduces you. Please keep this in your mind, if you are considering buying it: This must be rather an expensive choice.

If you''re looking for a very basic copier to make the occasional black and white copy this unit is fine. It makes very clean looking black and white copies. If you can think of a question in the form of "Does this copier have _____" chances are the answer is no. It can do double-sided copies, but only manually. There is no multiple-original feed. No shrink/enlarge options. It does have auto-exposure with a manual override if it''s needed. Knowing all of this I think it''s a steal at the $25 AR I paid. Otherwise you''re probably better off with a scanner and printer for most uses.

This is a cleverly designed compact copier, but don''t buy it if you think you would ever need to copy a page from a book. In order to copy a page from a book one must push down on the book to flatten out the part of the page closest to the spine, and this copier would probably break under that kind of pressure. In addition, the surface (platen, I think they call it) where one places the book to be copied moves back and forth during the copying process, and even if one doesn''t push down on the book, a considerable amount of patience and manual dexterity is needed to hold the book perfectly on the surface while it moves. We immediately saw that we would not be able to use this copier, since we occasionally need to copy pages from books, and Amazon was very nice about taking it back even though we had already begun to use the toner cartridge. Amazon even paid the shipping charges to return it.

I use this instead of my scanner and ink jet and am very impressed with it. I wasn''t expecting much for the price ($24 after rebates) but it surprised me with how well it works. It starts up within seconds and shuts down automatically. This is not something you would use for a business, it copies slow and does not feed multiple documents. It is nice and portable and is perfect for coping a few pages every week.

Every computer user should know by now that multi-function machines are strictly compromises. None of the features, generally speaking, is as good as the stand-alone single-function machine. And, when you pay as little as this mfc costs, your expectations should drop a bit more.

I''ve found this machine to be more than adequate in each of its functions. Print quality is surprisingly good, although it must be said that you go through replacement ink cartridges fairly quickly -too small.

It''s a compromise. It''s fairly small and takes less space than any two of the machines it replaces. If you''re realistic in your expectations you''ll find this to be a good, inexpensive mfc. It''s easy to use, too!

I have had this printer, (Or the step lower MFC), for over a year. Let me tell you "IT''S A PILE!!". The only things that work on it are the scanner. It works very well in fact but that doesn''t begin to make up for the problems that this thing has. First off right after I bought the thing Brother discontinued the ink, and here is the only place I can get more. Also this thing has to ''Clean'' the ink every time you want to print. And this cleaning does nothing for the quality. Every time I want to print a black and white paper it comes out blank. So I tell it to clean itself. After minutes of waiting out comes a wrecked piece of paper that you can''t even read. So you spend another half an hour telling the thing to clean itself. Several pages later (and yelling and screeming) you finaly get an acceptable paper. Don''t even ask for the thing to do color!!

Also don''t even try to do anything while it is printing. For some reason it has to slow everything down on your computer in order to print. You have to wait for it to finish what ever it''s doing to move the mouse smoothly again. If you ask me the thing is not worth it.

I had to buy this printer recently from a local Radio Shack only as a stop gap for a printer that I had used for two years that finally failed on me (IJ 750) because there weren''t any other models available from Compaq.

I wanted to purchase another IJ 750 but I couldn''t find this model available for purchase anywhere online including Compaq.com. I guess they discontinued this particular model.

The IJ 650 prints fine but my color cartridge ran out too quickly.

Both the black and color cartridges are small and you can bet you will have to buy another pair before you realize it.

I have no problems with the print quality this machine produces because you can manually change from 600 d.p.i to 1200 d.p.i. I wouldn''t recommend this however because you will run out of ink much more quickly. The default setting is set at 600 d.p.i. and this adequate for most types of print jobs.

My qualms with this model is that it does not handle printing labels as well as my old IJ 750 and I would recommend that you don''t try this with the IJ 650 because the labels sheets will become lodged while printing and you will waste those labes not to mention the ink.

Moreover, the IJ 650 does not notify you when you are running low on ink. You will have to determine that manually by accessing the printer settings via the Control Panel. My old IJ 750 would let me see the levels of ink while a print job was in progress. The cartridges for the IJ 750 were alot larger and I didn''t have to replace them as frequently as the IJ 650. However, both of these printers let you check on ink levels through the printer properties via the Control Panel.

In summary, don''t buy this printer unless you don''t print many envelopes and labels-they will jam and/or print a bit slanted and not parallel to the edges. It''s quality is above average in its 600 d.p.i. default setting. I wouldn''t recommend for small home offices.

I bought this colored paper to separate my weeks of work in my course. The sheets hold the color well; there was no bleeding over of the color on to my white pages. The color is stark enough to show the sections easily. This is better for me than the bulk of too many tabbed pages in one section, which can fill a binder before I''m ready to shelve it! I bought this Brother printer to replace an HP 2840 color laser. I like the Brother. It''s smaller and quieter. It doesn''t have to calibrate a couple times a day either. Scans are way faster than the HP and the scan quality if far better than the HP. Copies and printing are great, as expected. I don''t ever fax so I can''t address it''s capabilities there.

I found one limitation with this printer that prevented me from giving it five stars. The printer can only be used as a network printer attached to the router via an Ethernet cable or it can be a workstation printer supporting one PC attached via a USB cable. If your using Windows networking to share the printer (i.e. it''s connected to one PC via USB and enabled for print sharing), it''s not supported. What? You got it. Brother won''t let you share the printer other than to have it setup as a network printer attached to the router.

This is an issue if, like me, the router is nowhere near the printer and you want to do a lot of scanning using the PC based utilities vs. the little screen on the printer. You can scan with it as a network printer but you can only do it using the function keys on the printer itself. You lose the benefits of the PC software based approach. If you do any volume of scanning, you want the PC utilities enabled.

I was able to work around the problem and get it working like I wanted but it took a couple days working on and off to sort out. I called Brother technical support. They kindly told me the printer doesn''t support what I wanted to do and I should return the product. What? Unbelievable!!

To get it to work as a shared USB attached printer, you have to go through the CD install process on each PC. That''s okay once you understand that''s the process.

The only remaining limitation is quickly setting up a temporary shared user. Say your brother-in-law is in town for the weekend and needs to print. He can''t use the Windows "Add a printer" function and get to your Brother printer. You have to go find the CD and do a full install for your brother-in-law to print his Mapquest directions home. It''s not a huge problem but Brother should not have designed it this way.

The Brother 9120CN has very limited adjustment for making copies you can''t lighten it enough to get a clean copy of a newspaper article something my old HP 2840MFP handled fine. Normal computer print is OK, as it would be from most any laser printer, but the manual feed slot is poor. It only folds out about an inch, so it won''t support your paper; you have to hold each sheet until it feeds very inconvenient. The first time I used manual feed, I experienced the problem that others have reported where the printer says it has a paper jam, even though it doesn''t. But, you go through a long process to reset the printer, only to have it repeat the error message. I sure wish I hadn''t bought this turkey, but Brother has refused to let me return it after I identified all these issues.

Exactly as described. Setup was simple and straight-forward. It is a bit loud when it''s starting up, but once it goes back to sleep, it''s quiet again. For an office use this would be no problem. If you did a *lot* of printing at home, the noise might be a bit bothersome. But otherwise, this appears to be a great product.

I purchased this printer for a new start-up business.

I only needed the printer for text and simple graphics. Out of the box, it was easy to set up and worked perfectly. Everything was working well until suddenly a message appeared telling me to replace the toner in all 3 of the color cartridges.

I have used a number of printers in the past and am able to recognize when toner is low. The last page printed was perfectly fine...lots of color. The printer stopped at 9PM the evening before I had a big paper due; so I contacted the Brother support website (the phones were closed). After further research, it appears that there is a revolution counter used by the printer to indicate when the cartridges are empty. How on earth would all the cartridges empty at the same time?

Here is how the chat went:

John: Hello, Scott. Thank You for contacting Brother Chat Support. Just a moment while I review your issue.

John: Pushed Page:

John: If the problem continues after updating the firmware you''ll need to replace the empty toner cartridge(s) to clear the error. John: Is there anything else I can assist you with?

Scott: Yes, there is something else you can help me with. I tried the firmware update and it did not work. I have a paper due at 8AM tomorrow morning and need the printer to work. The last page printed perfectly, so I cannot imagine that the printer is so suddenly out of ink. Can you help me override this message so that I can print my paper?

John: If one of the color toner cartridges is empty you can print in grayscale mode using the instructions at the link I provided above. If the black toner cartridge is empty it will need to be replaced before you can continue printing.

Scott: Thanks John. But I need color urgently. Is there truly no way to override this? The cartridges are NOT EMPTY!

I found a solution that worked. Go to EBay and search for "flag gear" for your particular printer. I paid 13 dollars for a set of four flag gears. They are fairly simple to attach to the side of the cartridges and will allow you to continue printing as if you have new cartridges. I have already printed an entire additional ream of paper (albeit not demanding much ink). So Happy It Worked! Buy the printer, but also buy a set of flag gears so you can reset cartridges. I won''t change my rating though, as I feel this practice is still not acceptable (not transparent).

I have found that Memorex disk labels are very good and easy to set up. Allows you to use your own images or use their stock backgrounds. Add text in several ways, straight, circular top, circular bottom as well as some clip images are available.

I have tried Avery''s similar labels that you work from MS Word in their Mail & Labels section. I found Avery very hard to work with and far less customizable options.

My only negative is the matte finish. I personally would prefer a slick finish. But in the long and short run Memorex disk labels are the way to go for great looking jobs.

I use Memorex CD and DVD labels to label picture cd''s and dvd''s with picture slide shows on them. These labels are great because they let you pick the size of the label, small hole, larger hole or just a small label that goes around the opening in the cd. These labels are easy to print on and stick to the cd well. This is the second package of Memorex CD/DVD labels I have purchased and will buy more of these when I need to.

I use large quantities of matte CD labels for inkjet printing, and was very pleased with the Memorex brand for ten years: colors printed vivid and true, the labels were easy to apply and adhered well. But the most recent pack I bought proved completely different. Their new paper has an obvious grayish cast that takes color poorly (e.g., reds look brown, blues look gray), and the finished labels look dull, muddy, and cheap. This new paper is also so thin that ink bleeds into the adhesive layer, and the labels are prone to wrinkling during application, ruining the CD.

What was once an excellent product has been cheapened into one too shoddy to waste a cent on. I will never use Memorex labels again.

When the cartridges are new, they work just fine with the HP mobile printer. But the seller sent me cartridges that had expired in 1998. I didn''t realize this when they arrived but I did just recently when I tried to use one. The ink had leaked out and jammed the mechanism. No amount of cleaning helped. So I''m out some $70 on worthless merchandise. Shame on the seller.

I purchased the iP90v in the hope of using it at Special Events and Fairs. I needed a photo printer that was relatively light with the added option of being able to print directly from a camera. The iP90v certainly lived up to my expectations when it came to those two options. With a ''Picbridge'' compatible device like my Canon 30D I can print pictures directly from the camera without using a heavy laptop computer as the middle man. The iP90v also comes with computer software that let''s you print from a computer if you wish to to do so.

I''m not sure if others had the same problem, but downloading this software was extremely difficult and complicated. It took me a few hours just to get it right compared with my other 2 printers which were pretty much plug and play. Luckily this printer came with a very good ''English'' only manual that did a very good job of pointing out mistakes. The computer software gives you the options of organizing your photos, and minor editing features such as color balance, red eye removal, brightening or darkening of the picture. There are very few options when printing from ''PicBridge".

This was my main gripe about this printer, because I read that PicBridge does give you the option to edit photos inside the camera, but NOT with this printer ! The printer came with 1 pack of 25 sheet 4X6 paper, but I ordered 3 more packs 50 4X6, 25 5X7 and 25 8X10 Glossy sheets, because I wanted to see how the printer performed under different conditions. For plain old text this printer is great, very fast and very sharp. You can get an A4 in about 1 minute.

For photos, this printer has a tendency to underexpose(darken) your pictures. My best prints are the ones that were originally over exposed by about 1 stop. I called Canon about this and after the service Rep took 3 minutes to read the manual over the phone, he told me that my best bet would be to over expose my pictures by 1 stop when using this printer. I figure I could live with that since my camera has automatic over/under exposure compensation, but it''s still a hassle.

How did the prints come out. I would say I got some very acceptable looking pictures in all three formats 4X6, 5X7 and 8X10 in about 4 minutes. The colors match up well and there was no smudging even when using Glossy paper. I would say that somebody at a Special Event, or at a Fair might find the prints from this printer very acceptable indeed. Whereas someone paying for a professional portrait, or fine art work would not. The minute details are just not there. To be fair, however, I have not tried all the types of papers this printer can handle and which might give me better results than plain old Glossy.

Durability ? The printer is solidly built. I wouldn''t call it a Tank, but it does feel pretty solid. I still think that for travel, a padded case or taveling bag would be a very wise purchase. One thing though the paper feeder door latches are made of flimsy plastic and don''t look durable at all. I figure they are going to be the first to go.

I haven''t used this printer much to say whether I love it or hate it. So far it does a pretty good job of printing Color and B&W prints on the go. You can also print custom made stickers and labels with it. Not bad especially the stickers part.

One thing the manual does not mention is the amount of prints you can get from a single ink cartridge. I called Canon about this and they were pretty evasive about it, rather stating that it depends on the situation. Finally a rep told me that you could get about 185 4X6''s on the Black ink catridge. About 400 4X6s with the Color ink cartridge. I found those numbers astronomical since I dont think my much bigger Epson printer can get as many prints from a single cartidge. Maybe the rep though I was talking about Text ? I''ll just have to wait and see.

This printer is great for light volume, high quality printing. What I love most about it is that it can print 8.5" x 11" sheet and it is only the size of a book. It is lighter than a dictionary. It does not print as fast as a Laser Ink Jet but fast enough.

The ink cartridges are small, but it was expected because the whole printer is so small! The black one lasts 2 to 3 months before we replace with a new one. We only print on the average 4 pages a week in our household so it has not been a problem for us. My experience is that one black ink cartridge is good for printing about 60 to 70 pages of average contents such as expense reports, boarding pass, maps... Not too dense. Our color ink lasts a bit longer because we seldom print photo. It does have a low ink warning which I often ignore till the print becomes too faint. And I wish the blue tooth adapter was built in but you have to buy additionally.

I got this printer from another online retailer at a great price but it arrived not working. The printer head refused to feed paper. We went to the Canon website and found out our local Canon authorized service. We took it in and they fixed the problem within 2 or 3 days free of charge. The cost was covered by warranty. We are quite pleased with the product and the service.

This printer is pretty pricey at retail compared to other offerings on the market, especially when coupled with the LK-51B battery and the BU-10 Bluetooth adapter. However, it''s a very compact, lightweight, and rugged printer that fits nicely in my backpack, and can print on full-sized 8.5x11 paper. Buying from Amazon during a sale netted me a very decent savings off MSRP.

Photo quality on photo paper is very, very good. Text quality on normal inkjet paper is not perfect, but is more than adequate for most purposes, and is comparable to that of my larger Canon Pixma iP6600D.

If you buy it to use with a notebook on the go, get the LK-51B battery. With the battery, I was able to shoot digital photos for damage reporting, download them to my notebook, and then print them off on 4x6 photo paper at a lease signing in a house with no electricity. Very convenient!

The quality of color output (up to 8 x 10) is at least the equivalent of my Pixma IP 5000 or the Epson Photo R2400 sitting alongside the Canon. To be more accurate, I couldn''t see any relative difference in the printed images until I put the prints under a glass. Of course, speed of the iP90v falls short of the 5000 or the 2400. Color quality and density, as measured, falls within reasonable margin(s).

Received this mini260 recently as a gift. It was very easy and quick to set up and get up and running. Just remove a few plastic wrappings and pop in the ink cartridge, print out 2 alignment strips and you are good to go. Just select number of copies and press print and off it goes. You can select standard or high quality, but they both looked great and identical to me. Using standard gives you prints in 20 or 30 seconds. The higher setting takes just under a minute. I started using it before reading the instructions so at first I was printing the same photo over and over, because it was the only one selected to print 1 copy. It does not print what you see on the screen unless you have selected at least 1 copy of it. There will soon be a battery pack for this but it is not available yet. I also have not found a carrying bag for the printer and accessories made specifically for this printer (like HP has), so I just use a small laptop case which works perfectly to carry the printer, AC cord, extra paper and ink. The prints come out dry, they look great and this has been a very fun printer to use. I''m very impressed and partial to the Canon quality of cameras and printers. They just seem to always work great with no hassle. There is a separate sheet of paper included with the printer easy set up guide instructing you to make sure the ink cartridge sits nice and snug in it''s slot. It''s just something Canon wanted to add after printing their setup guide to make sure you pop the cartidge in place properly. Another reviewer made it sound like a big deal but it''s not. You''ll know if the ink is sitting properly or not. I have a lot of Canon photo paper but also tried some other generic brand and the pictures look just as good. So, maybe this printer isn''t very picky as to the type of photo paper you use. I know Kodak paper works great on my Canon i550 printer for photos. Also, this is a very quiet printer. I''ve always loved Canon digital cameras, so I was sure that I would also love a Canon printer. Sadly, I''ve never been so unhappy with anything as I am with this mini260 printer. After less than six months, of light to medium use, the printer seems to be worn out. I Agree with "Great Prints", PictureMate produces top quality prints at about half the price of its competitors. I am a semi-pro photographer and was looking for an easy way to get proof images and I found it with the Epson Picturemate. The prints cost roughly the same as from my local lab, about 29 cents each, and the quality is sharper and better. You can connect it directly to your computer or print straight from a variety of media cards. The only down side is there is no way to monitor and pick which image you want off the card without first printing a contact sheet.

Since I print from my computer this is really not a problem. The printer is small and portable. Epson claims the prints will last 100 years or more.

The low rating isn''t so much a reflection on the product as it is on the product''s packaging. Very pleased with quality of prints, but there are two problems preventing the printing of the advertised 100 prints per cartridge. I bought the Picturemate shortly after it began to be sold, and got nearly 100 prints from the original cartridge, though I had to buy extra paper, since it came with only 25 sheets. The latest cartridge, which I just bought and installed, is only 80% full, as reported by the printing program, and obviously will fall short of 100 prints. The second problem is that I have been printing infrequently, and had to discard the previous cartridge after maybe 50 or 60 prints, due to age and limited head-cleaning capacity. Despite the above, it still may be a good deal, provided that the price reflects these limitations. Still, if Epson is willing to reduce the capacity without saying so, they may well degrade the product more in future, in this or other ways.

Normally I buy recycled paper by Georgia-Pacific. One of the things I find interesting is that this paper is packed much more environmentally friendly than the recycled paper! It is mailed in a box with 3 reams wrapped in paper (the recycled paper is wrapped in plastic which I hate). The box is very easy to open & it is made to be a perfect fit for the paper. Therefore it is easy to retrieve more paper when I need it & very convenient to store.

From what I can tell it is no brighter than the recycled paper at 92 brightness. You get the same amount of sheets as well. The only difference (besides the packaging) is the weight of the paper. It is considered heavy weight at 24. My usual paper is 20.

I think it is the weight of the paper that gives it the nicer feel. I really cannot speak for the Colorlok technology. I know that my documents appear nicer to me but I''m not sure if that is thanks to the Colorlok or thanks to the thickness or both.

For everyday use I plan on sticking with their recycled paper. When I want to present a more professional looking document or anything I feel a thicker paper is needed I will use this.

Overall I think it''s a fine paper. It jammed only once in my printer & that was most likely my fault as I filled the paper tray pretty good. The recycled paper doesn''t jam a lot but it does on occasion. Possibly because it''s thinner. I''m not a paper expert. Because the recycled paper is cheaper & better for the environment, I would recommend it over this if the quality of your documents is not a concern. If you need a more professional look I strongly recommend this paper over the recycled.

One last thing, even though this isn''t recycled it is from Certified Fiber Sourcing. Sustainable Forestry Initiative. :)

I usually use the generic laser paper from a large office supply chain. I didn''t think Georgia Pacific''s would be much different. Hah.

There''s little visible difference between the text appearance but the FEEL of the paper is tremendously better. The generic is 20lb, GP is 24. I didn''t think that was a big deal but the generic felt like tissue compared to the GP. When you''re trying to make an impression the feel counts as well.

I imagine that the slight extra stiffness would help to avoid paper jams but I didn''t have a chance to print enough pages to notice a difference.

This GP paper produces very good quality printed pages. It is heavy enough that there is no bleed through. It is 24 weight which makes the pages feel more substantial than the usual 20 weight pages. It is very white at 92 whiteness although not brilliant white. A bonus is this paper is acid free so it won''t break down it is archival quality. I have been pleased with the quality.

My only quibble is you can see a very faint darker stripe down the length of the page that I would prefer not to have on the paper. It is so faint that many people probably won''t notice it.

I''ve been using this for a couple of months now and it''s been performing very well. This replaced an old HP LaserJet 4050 with a network print server that finally died. This unit has not been setup or used for faxing, so that is not taken into account in this review.

Setup and installation was quick and easy, and the print quality is excellent. Crisp letters and text, as well as good b/w images.

The unit does take a little while to start printing a job maybe 15 or 20 seconds but when it does begin the speed is very good. This isn''t a problem for us and I really don''t see that it would cause anyone much of a problem at all. In most cases the job is done before you go to retrieve it. I just needed to mention it because I''m sure someone will give it a 1* rating just because of that... I guess if you need INSTANT prints, then don''t get this.

The software that comes with it is very good, especially in that it allows you to easily configure the functionality of both the software and hardware ''buttons''. I liked the fact that in addition to changing the standard ''buttons'', it also provides another 4 custom software buttons that you can use to setup specific scanning tasks without interfering with the normal buttons.

Scanning is a little slow, partly because the default resolution is quite high. Bringing this back down in line with other default scanner resolutions helps, but it is still slower than other AIOs I''ve used in the past. It won''t be a big deal if you only use it occasionally or can lower the resolution a long way for your needs, but if you need frequent high-res scans then this is probably not the machine to get.

Scanning is also a little louder than on some other AIOs, almost like the mechanism belt is hitting some kind of specific vibration frequency every now and then. Again, this isn''t really a big deal for me.

I did see another couple of reviewers that weren''t happy with the hinges on the scanner cover, but they seem perfectly fine to me. The hinges are supposed to be loose and moveable to allow you to scan large books etc, and I don''t see anything wrong with them apart from that.

I''m not really going to go into the Copy feature, since that is just a product of Scanning and Printing...

The paper feed tray seems pretty smooth and I get the feeling that it would be less likely to jam or pick up multiple pages than some other feed types, e.g. vertical feeds. Not very scientific I know, but just a hunch. Perhaps that''s an indication of the build quality?

The paper out tray area is small, but that seems to be a standard feature of Brother AIOs. I don''t know why they do it this way but it is certainly peculiar and it can make it tougher to get at your jobs than on other devices. This is more of an issue when the print job is quite large. I knew what I was getting having checked it out at the store first, so I''m not surprised, however its definitely an odd design "feature". It didn''t put me off getting it because of the other good points, but this is certainly a weakness.

All-in-all this is a good network AIO for scanning, copying and printing. IMO, for the price, it is clearly a better buy than other name brands and the quality of the machine seems to be very sound.

I haven''t yet used enough pages to verify the estimated number of pages per toner, but the high-volume toner I purchased at the same time was certainly cheaper than the HP equivalent (about half the price) so even if the count is off by some amount it probably won''t be any more expensive in the long term.

As I mentioned at the top of the review, I have not taken into account the Fax features as I do not use them. If I ever do, I will update this review accordingly.

Update 12/22/09:

913 pages printed, mainly text, using the initial small "starter" toner that came with the unit before it needed replacing. In my experience that is pretty good for a starter toner. Print quality was good to the end, and it was only changed because it sensed it was empty and wouldn''t let us continue printing otherwise. I suspect there might be a workaround to trick the sensor and get more pages but I haven''t tried anything myself. Still recommend the product.

Update 7/24/12:

3987 pages printed when the next toner died. Putting a sticker over the clean hole either side of the cartridge allowed it to start working again. I will update when we actually replace it to indicate how many more prints we get without much degradation in print quality.

I needed a network printer so I purchased this to replace an old Brother HL-T440 (factory refurb bought for $150.00) that was non-networked (USB only). That printer still works great and I heartily recommend any Brother printer that uses TN-430 or TN-460 cartridges. Printers that accept that cartridge series have a very reliable print engine and huge toner capacity (4 years of SOHO use before replacing the first standard capacity cartridge).

Pros: option of either USB or network use, affordable price, ease of set up, small size, good print quality, 32 mb of printer memory (good for faxing or printing large jobs), affordable print cartridges, good scan quality, custom buttons for fax functions, extending hinges over scanner tray for large books/objects, comes with telephone cord, works way better than color inkjet printer fax/copier/printer combos. Buy this and a decent dedicated photo-printer from Epson or Canon if you are an avid photographer, accepts either legal (8x14 inch paper) in the paper tray. Affordable text recognition software but baffled by old inkjet invoices coverted to Word (to be honest, most scanning software doesn''t do well converting old inkjet prints to Word documents).

Cons: uses a smaller toner cartridge format than older Brother printers, small output tray (holds only 60-80 pages of output), loud automated fax/copier feeder, this is a slightly louder laser printer than HP, Canon or Xerox printers (it won''t wake a baby in the next room, but some people have auditory sensitivity so I must be exact), slightly slower USB printing than HP & Canon (half to one second), slightly longer printer spooling time than other laser printers on a network (but spools large print jobs faster than competitors in this price class), does not come with network cable or USB cord, more finicky (and slow) manual feed tray.

I read the reviews and it seems that these either work well out of the box or don''t. For those people who purchased one with paper feeding issues, return/exchange ASAP. In 20 years of employment I have observed that paper feeding machines (printer, fax, copiers, scanners) of all brands either feed well right of the box or they don''t. One should only buy office paper that is 20 lb (75 g/m2). If your machine can''t feed that, it''s a fraction of a millimeter or two off in spec and you will never be happy with it.

Slow but seamless loading of software on my old AMD Sempron based backup/thrasher computer with XP over 30 minutes (2002 cheapo home built computer). Be patient. No huge conflicts with antivirus software (I loaded the drivers on each computer with firewall/antivirus on instead of box instructions to turn that software off). Much faster loading times on my newer computers with various flavors of Windows XP).

Remember with any laser printer that it is important to shake the toner cartridge gently from side to side (not up/down/upside-down) before loading and whenever it shows low toner alert.

I bought this machine under 2 weeks ago, and sadly I am going to need to return it, because I can''t get it to not jam on paper. The only way I can print is to manually feed each piece of paper one by one. Otherwise, it grabs several papers at the same time, printing part of a sheet on one and part on others, and often jamming up. I have tried different types of papers, different weights, the different feeders, read the manuals and the troubleshooting, and it hasn''t made a difference.

Otherwise, the machine seems great. I had trouble-free installation on 2 XP computers, the scan quality is great, the print quality is very good when you put it at the higher level, crisp blacks. I would like to be able to keep it, but I can''t be expected to be my printer''s page-feeder for every document.

I have owned this printer for a few months and have been very happy with it. It works very well with a mac, it''s very easy to use and the printing quality is great. The scanner works well too and its really easy to scan or make photocopies. It''s very compact and takes as little desk space as an all-in-one can take.

Especially for mac users, I think brother all-in-one''s are the best ones.

I bought the unit from Office Max on 1/22/09 and I''m returning it today 1/27/09.

I was pleased with the unit except that it fails to consistently load paper. It will print anywhere from 1 to 20 pages before it stops and says "out-of-paper". It was also wrinkling the paper right where the mechanism grabs a sheet out of the tray. I read all the manuals and tried 3 diff. brands of paper including their recommended brand.
