While I am sure the unit is working fine, and yes I did get a great deal on this--It was advertised as a genuine HP New kit and I got a rebuild or knock off, hard to say.

I feel the selling company was deceptive--

Another vendor Mobilshark is excellent, but his printers are 220v not 110 volt so be sure to ask for the converter. Mobil shark is very easy to deal with. I only rated this as a four as the ad is misleading on the voltage.

  • 4800 dpi high resolution CCD scanner for documents and films
  • WHITE LED eliminates warm-up time for document scanning

I have now been using this printer/scanner for over two weeks. This replaces an old HP multifunction device which had problems with my Mac when printing over the network.

I work from home and have several computers running, Vista, XP and OSX and wanted them to share a printer/scanner. I must admit the driver setup is not the cleanest, and I needed to download versions newer than on the supplied disk to enable printing from 64bit applications on the mac. The only setup I got stuck on was that it is not clear that you need to have the printer connected by USB to create the initial connection to a secure wi-fi network.

Now that its up an running it works a dream enabling me to print and scan from any computer anywhere in the house. The scanning is decent (I don''t have a huge quality need, but I can''t complain about anything I''ve scanned), the printing is stunning. Colors are accurate for photos and the double sided printing is a great paper saver for general printing.

The only things which I feel could improve this device, for my purposes, are a document feeder for bulk scanning and a built in fax capability.

Before I had this printer I purchased a Kodak All-in-one. The one that advertises lab quality prints at half the price. It worked really well the first month of having it. After that I have never been more frustrated with an electronic device. It''s main issues were a design flaw in the print head, noisy operation, inks didn''t last very long, paper feed problems, bad software, and it wouldn''t let me print photos on anything other than kodak paper. So after replacing the print head three times I called it quits and decided I wanted something I could count on. Enter the Canon MP980. This printer was twice as expensive as the kodak, but worth every penny. The prints are AMAZING, and 4x6 Photos print faster than any printer I''ve ever used. There is also a dedicated Gray Ink cartridge allowing for true gray scale/Black & White photo prints. Printing is completely effortless. Everything just works. Setup was a breeze. I can replace each ink individually (not that I''ve had to yet). It has all the basic features like multi flash memory card reader, pic bridge, separate try for regular paper and photo paper, double sided printing and then some advanced features. Such as "quiet" mode. Optional blue-tooth, and built in Wi-Fi. BIG LCD. Connecting wirelessly is made easy. The scanner is fully functional and in addition to doing all the basics, it will do film and negatives as well. It also features LED''s so there is no "warm up" time. Although a message will show up saying to stand by for the scanner to warm up but it''s only for about 1 second. Things I thought are a nice touch. The standard paper tray slides inside the printer. When in a Standby mode, all the trays and openings to the printer are closed. When you execute a print, the door where the paper exits, opens automatically. There is no worry of things inside the printer getting dusty. The software bundled with the printer is really nice, straight forward, and works well. So far, no problems. I couldn''t be happier with this amazing machine.

Of course nothing is perfect. I thought it might be neat to print directly on DVD''s like some other printers do, not with this one. It''s largest borderless photo print is only 8.5" x 11". When turned on for the first time of the day, it goes through a priming routine where it gets the ink tanks and print head ready (I''m assuming). The process could take up to a minute. My biggest gripe is that the photo paper try loads from the rear. When you want to print from specialty paper you have to pull open the tray. It doesn''t store paper inside like the standard paper tray. So when you want to print photos, you have to open the tray and load it with whatever specialty paper you''re using. The tray pulls out in a virtical position so you can still position the printer up against a wall if you''re limited on space. When finished, you then unload the specialty paper and slide the tray back inside the printer. You could leave it out and loaded, but then you risk getting dust on your specialty paper unless you have a printer cover.

I highly recommend this printer. It''s well refined and quality is top notch.

Why 1 star you may ask.

I''ve come to expect a lot from Canon I own several of their cameras; I have one of their older photo printers (paid $45) on my boat that works flawlessly, so when I purchased their top-of-the line consumer printer, I expected one heck of a printer.

While the photo printing quality wasn''t bad, it wasn''t any better than my $45 printer. As a matter of fact, I was seeing some funky stuff showing up in the very dark sections of my photos. No, resolution is not the issue I''ve had these same images printed professionally at almost twice the size.

However, what really got me was the copy function.

The scanning works fine and captures everything, but not the copies.

The copies cut off the left and bottom 1/4 inch of the original document.

I called Canon Technical Support and was told that it''s a known issue!

I didn''t see that little tidbit of information in their specs did you?

I''m sorry, but in my opinion, it is totally unacceptable for Canon to sell the PIXMA MP980 as a photo All-In-One with no fax and a less than perfect copier.

Hope this helps...

This printer does everything I wanted it to do, and does it well in excess of my expectations. Plain paper printing is excellent, and the photo prints are simply gorgeous. I cannot tell the difference between this printer''s photo output and store-bought prints. Furthermore, the memory card, wireless functionality, and the built-in display work great. The UI is intuitive and works well for printing photos directly from a camera''s memory card. The card also appears as a disk drive on networked Windows machines, making for easy transfer of photos and video clips to fixed storage (a Windows PC or NAS box, for example).

On the other hand, the software installation process is a complete dog. It takes almost 20 minutes (!) to complete. This is not at all pleasant and it''s not intuitive. I found it to be the same level of hassle on Windows XP and Mac OS X platforms. The process has a few pitfalls as well as taking a long time. It''s not worth going into the details (some other reviewers have), but you should be aware of it before going into the project. Furthermore, there was a gap of nearly two months from when Apple released OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) before updated drivers were available for it from Canon, which was inconvenient and difficult to understand.

It''s a shame I have to rate the product at 4 (revised to 3 one year later--see below) stars when it''s really an outstanding multifunction device, but the software is inseparable from the product at the end of the day.

Updated one year later: Everything I related above remains true; however, it''s become evident that this printer is remarkably--astonishingly--expensive to own. It has been completely reliable and the print quality is still great, but the ink cartridges, which the printer eats with a ferocious appetite, are very expensive and inconveniently small. Without tallying receipts, I estimate that this printer has cost me fully what I paid for it (which was basically full retail because it was brand new when I purchased it from Amazon) in the cost of Canon ink cartridges. I shy away from off-brand or generic cartridges because of print quality and reliability problems I''ve experienced in the past with other printers, but I do bargain-shop for cartridges. For context, this printer serves a family of four (two of whom rarely print anything) and only normal, household printing needs such as school reports, coupons, etc--we print photos only a few times a year. I''m not looking to replace it yet but my next printer purchase will be at least 50% based on cost to operate.

I wanted an all in one printer that worked wirelessly and this printer seemed like my best bet after reading all the reviews. I have used the printer for almost two weeks now on a Windows XP system and on a Vista system running 64 bits. Here is my evaluation so far. I will list pros and cons up front for those that don''t want to read my whole review.

Pros

Great prints both normal and photo

Extremely fast

Great scans for normal documents and 35 mm film if done correctly

Very easy to set up on new computers once you get it working on a single computer wirelessly.

Nice software controls that work well with Photoshop

Cons

Horrendous documentation

Very confusing setting up for wireless access on Windows XP for initial setup.

No document feeder for copying multipage documents

Setup:

Very bad experience for me. I took the printer out of the box and tried to decipher the instructions so that I could print wirelessly using Windows XP. I knew in advance this would be an issue from prior reviews but figured as an experienced computer user I should be ok. Not so. You HAVE to install the software first on your computer before ever hooking the printer to it. You also must start using a USB cable and be sure to enable the wireless feature in the printer using the menu system on the printer itself. Turn the printer off and then hook it up to your computer. The configuration utility will then allow you to set the computer up for first time use on a wireless LAN. Enter your WEP keys if needed. You MAY have to create a port for using the printer wirelessly. It is not entirely clear in the documentation but that caused some grief. After you have configured the printer for wireless use then detach it from the computer and turn it off and on again. It should come up as a printer you discover wirelessly your computer. Once you can attach to it you should have no problems.

Printing:

The printer is lightning fast even in regular mode. I was blown away how fast it is so this is a major plus. I HATE the fact that there is no document feeder. This means I have to keep my old HP printer around for bulk copying of documents which is really annoying. Contrary to some prior post you CAN have HP printers work with this printer without an issue. I am doing it. Photos print fantastically well but in order to get the best color match I used the Adobe RGB 98 profile with Photoshop. The printer has a variety of profiles and is very very tweakable which is really helpful. Full bleed photos were so good my friends could not believe they came from this printer. I used the Canon photo plus glossy II 4x6 photo paper. Set that output for the printer so that it optimizes for that printing surface.

Scanning:

Contrary to another reviewer I had absolutely no problems scanning over the net. Interface to Photoshop 7.01 and CS4 was flawless and the scanner utility is very nice and tweakable. For the person that said it looked very digital I would suggest setting the DPI values in advanced settings up to the max 4800 dpi since the default is 1200. I scanned 35mm film negatives and was blown away how well they came out. The instructions for the use of the film scanning tray are sketchy but eventually I figured it out and am thrilled about the way I can use it. Scanning photos worked really well also. If you use Photoshop you don''t have to have the scanning utility do the work of removing dust etc but it does have that feature if you want it.

I would have given this printer 5 stars if it had a document feeder and the setup and documentation were better. If judged for scanning and printing only I would absolutely give it 5 stars. My daughter is an animator and artist and she needed a printer that would provide accurate color and she is very happy with it. I will say that it worked without any problems on 64 bit Vista using Adobe Photoshop CS4 which was really nice.

Epson Stylus Photo R280 Ultra Hi-Definition Photo Printer (C11C691201)

Epson Stylus Photo R280 Ultra Hi-Definition Photo Printer
  • Texts documents at 38 pages per minute and print standard 4-by-six-inch photos in 11 seconds
  • Creates 5760-by-1440 dpi prints that are smudge, scratch, fade, and water resistant
  • Auto Photo Correction with advanced face detection corrects overexposed shots
  • Prints text and images directly onto CDs and DVDs for professional look with personalized touch
  • 1-Year limited manufacturer''s warranty

I bought this printer solely to print on printable CD''s and DVD''s. I have produced a number of CD''s now and am very happy with the results. The included program works well, is easy to use and allows using personal full color pictures and text. This is one of the least expensive printers to accomplish this task.

I bought this printer specifically to do holiday cards (I use a Hi-Touch dye sublimation printer for my photos). I checked the specifications, and it claimed it could do cardstock. However, it kept jamming on the cardstock. I went through the Epson website trouble shooting screens, and I discovered that the maximum paper weight it can handle is 24 pounds (that''s the weight of fine office stationery). Cardstock is usually 50 or 60 pound weight.

If I had discovered this earlier, I would have purchased a different printer. As it was, I think Epson made the specifications too vague, by specifying cardstock rather than the weight of usable paper.

Addendum: In the troubleshooting section of the Epson website, it suggested that paper jam could be reduced by feeding sheets one at a time. I tried it, and the printer worked like a charm--smooth paper feeding and fast printing. The only drawback is that I must stand by the printer and feed each sheet of cardstock one at a time.

I should mention that Epson, unlike many vendors, includes high-capacity ink cartridges in the box.

Please consider this a four-star, not a three-star, review.

I''m a loyal HP user for lasers, but have had trouble with my inkjets from them in the past. Since I''ve had good luck with my Epson scanner, I gave the R280 a shot and have been very impressed with it. There were some errors in the original setup, causing the printer to freeze during ink charging, but these vanished as mysteriously as they appeared and the printer has been working like a dream ever since. The CD printing is beautiful (FYI: CDs are supposed to be given 24 hours to dry) and a great feature to have. I love the way that the printer also completely folds up, which keeps out dust and minimizes desk space. The printer is also offered at a great price and I was even able to get it with a rebate (no longer available) that will literally reimburse me for the cost of the printer, if it comes through. Epson, you might have won a convert!

Want Epson Stylus Photo R280 Ultra Hi-Definition Photo Printer (C11C691201) Discount?

I''m rating this 4 stars, but really that''s arbitrary. This printer is good enough for me (even though I''m hassling with it right now trying to get it to locate CD print correctly under Vista.)

I like the Epson Photo Stylus series for one reason: Quality of print. Epson isn''t for everyone. In particular, Epson uses a dye that sits on the surface of into the paper, and so it prints best on high-priced photo or matte papers, which have the best surfaces. The inks are brilliant and make for very appealing photos. Epson has the best nozzle technology in the business, producing tiny droplets of ink (3 picoliters as I remember.) This gives very high resolution. Inks are expensive, but they''re good. Epson uses proprietary color processing firmware, which produces attractive colors, kind of like Technicolor. The Epson increases the saturation of colors in a tasteful way, and has good flesh tones. The print actually looks like dye sublimation technology, which is generally considered a higher quality, and much more expensive, process. If you want to print photos, I believe Epson Photo Stylus printers are the best choice. If you wanted to print "business graphics" such as charts and graphs, I would use a color laser printer (a lot faster) or an inkjet for which the cost of each page was less. I''ve heard that Kodak inkjets have a lower continuing cost.

One past problem with inkjet printers was that colors faded fast. In direct sunlight, they would be down to 30% 40% in one day. I was in a focus group for inkjet printers for Lexmark Corporation, and color retention was the group''s #1 concern. Epson says color retention with the R280 inks is much improved.

If you wanted extreme fidelity of colors, such as people I know in our local Sheriff''s Crime Scene Investigation area, this would not be a good choice. But accuracy is not the same as attractiveness, and the most accurate printers often print unappealing images.

Please be aware that the ink runs if it ever gets wet. I haven''t tried spray art lacquers or fixatives, but that would be a possible solution.

I primarily use the printer to print CDs. It produces very good printing, but some aspects of it are a pain. But my R280 prints CDs fine under Vista. My older R200 never would. The CD printing firmware and operation of the R280 are much, much, better than they were with earlier printers such as the R200 and R220. The CD slide is better designed and functioning is generally 1,000% better. The R200 was not really ready for prime time.

Over all, if you want quality printing, the R280 is a top choice. I''ve noticed that many other reviewers give extreme high or low reviews. I don''t want to do that. I''m trying to help you make a reasoned choice.

I felt I should comment on this product because I was the printer specifier for a Fortune 100 company in a previous job. I had access to very skilled printer manufacturer technical staff. Actually, a representative for Lexmark Corporation told me he thought the Epson produced the highest quality printing in the business--that''s praise from an unlikely source. When my R280 gives out, I''ll buy another R280.

I bought the Epson Stylus R280 to supplement my older C88.

Positively:

1. It prints a lot faster, including on hi quality color mode.

2. It does a good job on CDs.

3. The 200-sheet paper tray is really handy.

4. Paper feed is superior to the C88. No jams so far.

5. It fed easily both 32 Pd paper and a 150 Pd card stock with no problems. But then, the old C88 did that too.

Negatively:

1. The initial paper feed is REALLY noisy. It doesn''t just feed the paper, it slams it in, and with a clatter so strong it rocks the desk on which it sits. This is very annoying in a small office.

2. The B&W print quality isn''t really much better than the old C88. Even using a magnifying glass, I couldn''t see much improvement.

3. The color printing is better than the C88 but not so much as to be worth the price.

In my opinion, the only thing I got for my money different from what I already had was the ability to print CDs for my work. But when I offset that with putting up with the clatter, then I wonder if I would have been better off just using an old CD stomper.

It is a pretty cheap machine in every sense of the word. I would recommend spending a bit more on something better because as cheap as it was, it was not worth the price.

Lexmark X5650 All-in-One Inkjet Printer
  • Inkjet printer

  • Multifunction Device

I will admit, I have not used the fax option on this machine but I have gone through a couple of ink cartridges with all the printing and copying I have done. I have also done dozens of scans with it and I have not had a single problem with it. The print quality is great, the included software is very easy to use, and the ink costs are reasonable. For the price (got it for about $50 on sale), I think this is a great machine and I am very happy with it. Beats my older HP all in one hands down. The only thing that I don''t like about it is the paper feed. I do prefer a bottom fed machine as my printer sits on the top of a cabinet, making it more difficult to load, especially when working with envelops. But for the ease of use in other areas, this is a very minor thing to me.

The only pros are it will occasionally print and scan and copy. Usually this is after turning it on and off several times because the power quits, sometimes in the middle of a print job.

The fax has never worked correctly.

I am on my second model (5650). I took the first back thinking I had a lemon, but the 2nd wouldn''t even cut on out of the box. I call tech support (Lexmark does have very good support) and was instructed to use a pencil eraser on the power adapter (which worked, but this was a new machine!) I was instructed to unplug, pick up and shake my first model! LOL

Note: I have a five year old Lexmark copy/scan/fax machine which still works well to send faxes. The printer part quit when it was about 2 years old. I have a very inexpensive Lexmark printer in my house which has never given me a problem. Point: Lexmark does have good products, but the X5650 model is NOT one of them. Stay away.

Please, Please ,Please do your homework, I bought this unit because of the initial cost was cheap, it was on sale BUT..... the cost of the ink is completely out of wack.. WOW it just cost so much money to run. I am on my 3rd replacement in just a few months and at $70.00 plus a refill that is stupid money. Over $210.00 for copies in so little time. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MACHINE!!!!!!! I don''t write reviews but this is just an outrage to pay so much for copies. This company, never again. I am looking at and doing my homework on getting a new machine after this review. This company should be ashamed of itself.

For my X5650 LEXMARK, I have had to buy a new black cartridge ($24 plus tax at Walmart) after printing just about 50 sheets. The cartridge was 36 black. This adds up to about 45 cents a page. The maintenance people (people with barely understandable English) told me that that is not unusual. This cost is outrageous!

I WOULD NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER LEXMARK PRODUCT AGAIN.MY PRINTER NEVER WAS ABLE TO PRINT IN COLOR BUT DID NOT TRY IT RIGHT AWAY SO I COULD NOT RETURN IT WITHIN 30 DAYS.

Lexmark never honored their warrantyandgave mea terrible runaround with no results. theblack ink stopped printing after one year. it still scans and faxes so I use it as a stand alone scanner and fax machine because FAXing is easier with the flat bed scanner -I scan/fax small things like receipts. What a monster taking upso much space.

The ink cartidgesalsocost a ton and I bought a new color cartridge thinking the onethat came with the printer was not any good. Just blew moremoreofmy money on this %^#%^%$%**.

While I noticed that a previous reviewer complained on the paper arriving in disarray, that was not my experience. My order arrived neatly shrink wrapped. Of course shrink wrapping does not allow for easy removal of a partial quantities I can live with this by storing the paper elsewhere.

You can only really appreciate this product if you do a lot of comb binding. It is a real time save as you need only bind, not punch and bind. While the paper alone could be had for around $7.00 at any office supply store it''s worth the extra dollars to to save time.

Brother HL-5040 Laser Printer

Brother HL-5040 Laser Printer
  • 2,400 x 600 dpi resolution with HQ1200 technology
  • Up to 17 pages per minute print speed
  • 8 MB memory, upgradeable to 136 MB; 250-sheet universal paper cassette
  • Supports optional 10BaseT external Ethernet print server
  • USB 2.0 and parallel interfaces; PC and Mac compatible

I purchased my Brother HL-5040 from Amazon.com for $190.00 delivered, including the USB 2.0 cable, and the TN-530 3,000 page "starter" toner cartridge and the DR-500 drum rated for 20,000 pages. I am an English professor and generally use it for printing out my papers (15 to 30 pages) and drafts of books (up to 500 pages), and master copies of handouts and exams and the like for my classes (I have an HP DeskJet for color printing). The Brother HL-5040 printer has a nice compact footprint: there is no hideous projecting tray or paper catcher as with several of the competing models, and the output area on top holds fifty or more printed pages without spilling them. The printer is also low enough at "9.9 inches" to fit under a foot-high shelf in my work room (so it doesn''t take up the valuable real-estate on the top shelf) The 12 point text (which is the standard in my field) is very sharp, and the old (circa 1880s) political cartoon images I''ve reproduced from scanned photocopies of newspapers look great: I''ve no banding or dark areas.

Having read the other reviews, I want to share some of my thoughts that may shed light on the differing views regarding the Brother printers. This printer replaces a Brother HL-1240 model I''ve owned for over two years. I replaced that printer (it was given to my sister) because its drum was failing, after making approximately 12,000 copies. Until the drum began to fail, I never had a single problem with the printer: it never ever jammed even once (my previous laser printer, an Epson 1400, jammed all the time). For $110 I could have replaced the drum unit (as my sister did), but for $190 I upgraded to the HL-5040. So, while I''ve seen the critiques of the Brother printers because of their drums, and I have in fact elected to replace my HL-1240, I still don''t think the harsh criticisms directed at Brother for this situation are fair.

Here''s what I think: it is not likely that very many $200 laser printers will ever print out 100,000 or even 60,000 high quality copies over their lifetimes. I say this in part because I suspect the paper transport mechanisms in all the printers in the personal use category are likely to be at least somewhat degraded by the time the printer approaches that number of copies, and once that happens--as anyone who''s ever tried to nurse an aging photocopier knows--the point of ever diminishing returns has been reached. And I say this also because many, if not most, small office and home users like me are unlikely to use a $200 printer often enough to generate 60k to 100k copies in less than five years. At my rate of use, I will have to own my new printer for 8 years to reach the upper number. Given the rate of technological change, as good as it now is, I seriously doubt that I''ll want to have this printer for that long.

That said, this time I intend to keep the printer long enough to replace the drum unit at least twice, and, assuming I get the same 12,000 copies out of each drum, that puts me in the 36,000 copies range. When I crunch the numbers (the drums presently cost $140.00 and the 6,500 page toner cartridges run $75), my cost per copy for the first 16,000 estimated copies (using the included DR-500 drum and the TN-530, and purchasing 2 TN-560 toner cartridges), works out to 2.1 cents per page. Of course, as we all know, the estimated yields are highly inflated. Assuming I get 36,000 copies out of the 3 drums (including the one included with the printer) and 5,000 copies from the TN-560 toner cartridges, plus 2,000 to 2,500 from the included TN-530, I''d need to buy 7 TN-560s to get to that number. This would add up to a $995.00 total investment and would mean my actual per copy cost would be approximately 2.8 cents over the "life" of the printer.

This is not the low 1.3 cents per copy figure I''ve seen in one magazine review, but once all the inflated estimates are cut down to size, I suspect it is quite competitive with what the other companies can offer.

Buy Brother HL-5040 Laser Printer Now

I have been staring at the Brother model HL 1440 for quite some time. It was Consumer Reports number one pick. I decided to go with the HL-5040 because of the additional ram and extra fonts. When I read the owners manual it showed me that a lot of other features are built in as well. I like the fact that it prints a page so fast, and only costs 2 cents per page. My Lexmark X83 multifunction does a nice job in color but has a single page print cost of 6 cents to $1.50 when printing a full-page photograph. Now I think nothing of whipping out a 20-page document. The speed is another practical issue. At a max of 17ppm the paper is coming out so fast that one page is settling in the print tray, while another one is coming out right on top of it

To be critical of the unit is to cite the comments in C Reports, and ZD Net reviews as to the medium quality results when printing graphics. I think that is due in part to the print per page cost being the lowest out of all of the printers. The HL1440 was rated a little higher in graphics, but the same in text. I think black and white photos mixed into an MS Publisher document look fine for black and white. The laser gives you an acceptable printed photo for a few cents. Make up a single 4-page flyer, and make a hundred copies, and you can see that the laser printer could pay for itself in a single printing next to an inkjet. Makes you want to market your tail off with the economy of the laser.

I networked the house, and put the brother HL-5040 in my home office, and now have the option of printing from any one of the machines.

It comes with 8 Meg of ram built in, that is permanently installed, and you have one expansion slot for a single added ram chip. I went into Boogle.com and found a supplier with a 128 Meg ram chip that is generic. The 128 was only thirty-six dollars with free shipping. The printer will work fine with the 8 Meg it comes with, but if you send it a 50-page PDF file, the extra ram is a good idea to help prevent bottlenecks.

I love the fact that it has a 250-sheet paper tray. The additional 250-sheet tray for a total of 500 is an option.

The 5040 was listed in Consumer Reports as being the loudest of the laser printers, but I find it to be very quiet.

The big bonus is that with a laser printer your ink never dries out. It is a powder to start with. My friend bought an NEC in the mid 80''s and did very little printing, and just last year his cartridge ran out. The problem with my Lexmark inkjet is that the darn cartridges wear out so fast even if you don''t use them, and they are expensive.

You do not want to move this machine without removing the drum-toner cartridge first. Brother has big warning messages on the toner bag, stating you can do irreparable harm if you don''t remove it first. I imagine that the toner can spill into the workings of the printer and do come damage. Some people commenting on streaking may have done just that. If you move it into the next room, treat it like nitroglycerine, or remove the cartridge first.

The bottom line is the price. (...)the reduction in price to start with, this printer is a super buy. I noticed that Brother has a 5140 now to replace this one. It has the same results on graphics, has the same print resolution, and only a couple of pages per minute improvement on the print speed. I saved the extra money by buying the 5040 and put some of that savings, into the 128 Meg memory expansion chip, and still had some money left over. The 5140 does come with 16 Megs instead of 8 like the 5040.

Bubble jets and inkjets will give you a slightly darker and larger text. The laser is smooth, and truly fuzz free, even under a microscope. I find it easier on the eyes to read. I am keeping my Lexmarks X83s for when I want to print photographs, and when I want to print something out right where I am, instead of going into the office.

I''m not into yeah this, and boo that. I think if I had to have just one printer, it would be a full featured bubble-ink jet, so I could do color too. Adding a laser to your arsenal is the ultimate conclusion. With the price of these Brothers, and the high ratings, (...), makes them a must have. Highly recommended.

I work as an independent paralegal, doing research and preparing documents to file with the Courts. I purchased this unit about 6 weeks ago because my inkjet printer was too slow and too expensive for big projects.

Like the other inexpensive Brother laser printers, this one is a very good value, and has features of more expensive printers. It does have some cheap plastic parts, but this is to be expected in this price range. Other inexpensive laser printers look feel cheap in comparison.

On the good side, the printer has the 250 page paper drawer located under the printer, where it belongs. This way, you don''t have an unsightly flop [sic] of paper on the desk in front of you. It also has a front door for feeding single sheets so you don''t have to open the drawer and replace the paper, reset the paper guides, and so forth, simply to print a single envelope. It also pops printed paper out of the top into a proper paper recepticle, or you can open the door at the back of the printer and let the paper feed straight through.

The printer is fast, at 17 pages per minute, and warms up fairly quickly so you don''t have to wait too long for it to start. Print quality is good, and small fonts are legible with no bleeding. The grayscale for graphics is good, with nice even printing and little graininess.

The biggest problem I have with this printer is that the drum and toner cartridge are replaced separately. This is not as much a problem as an annoyance. The printer drum has to be changed every 20,000 copies or so, and costs almost as much as the printer itself. The toner is inexpensive relative to other printers, but the drum is around $100. Despite having this unusual expense every four or five toner cartridges, the per page cost is still only about 1.5 cents per copy. This is comparable to other laser printers, and is significantly cheaper than inkjet printers. In comparison to inkjet printers, this laser will pay for itself in the first 5,000 to 10,000 copies.

For a home or small office, this printer gives a lot of bang for the buck. Given the high quality of the black and white print, the low per page cost, and the speed, this printer is a steal.

Want Brother HL-5040 Laser Printer Discount?

I read most of the reviews on the Brother HL 5040 and there were a few criticisms that concerned me. People wrote that it was loud and handled envelopes poorly. I decided to take my chances since the printer was only $150 with no tax and shipping included. In its defense, I must say that my printer does a great job printing envelopes. I ended up printing out wedding invitations and envelopes. It printed the outer envelopes, inner envelopes, and RSVP envelopes as well as the card stock for the invitation cards, maps, and RSVP cards for 120 invitations!

It was easy to feed them through the manual feeder. I had to do it one at a time, but if you''re on a budget, it beats paying for it to be professionally done (and hopefully, I''ll only have to do it once in my life). It''s also a very speedy printer and so manually feeding the hungry Brother was relatively painless. There was a tendency for envelopes to curl when they came out. It wasn''t a problem after they had been stuffed. I believe that curling problems would happen with any laser printer since the paper gets heated up while being run through the feeders. The graphics for my maps were sharp in the "HQ 1200" mode and I did not have to purchase extra memory for it. Text was sharp in all modes. Paper would jam when I was dumb enough to try to feed paper, cards, or envelopes through the manual feeder that weren''t completely flat. Unjamming was a piece of cake. I''ve also not had a problem with it being too loud. I don''t keep it on all the time and I don''t print while someone is trying to sleep. I''ve never experienced any high-pitched squeal that others have written about.

The only criticism that I do agree with is that it takes a large amount of energy to operate. When I print, the lights start to dim and I turn off other energy guzzling appliances. But if you''re the type that likes to blow-dry your hair with the microwave on while printing on a laser printer all at the same time, you might want to consider... a gas-powered microwave!... or... the "wet hair look!"

To sum it all up, my printer works wonderfully and I was pleased that it did not exhibit some of the nasty things some of the reviews had mentioned. Good luck!

I''ve been struggling to keep my Apple Laserwriter 16/600 running with linux for several years. It''s been fantastic. But after my last upgrade to SuSE 8.2, I ran into several problems getting the drivers installed and configured. So, I finally decided it was time to get a new printer. I chose this printer because it is well supported under linux, prints very fast at 17 pages per minute, has a fast first print time (under 10 seconds) and unlike the HL-1440 comes with 8MB of memory for printing larger files. It''s also PCL6 compatible so it will work with just about any operating system. I had this printer out of the box, plugged in, configured and printing a PDF file in less then 20 minutes. It''s also dead silent when not printing.

The only problems I''ve noticed is that fields of solid black appear to have nearly invisible faint gray lines, and text could be printed a bit darker. But this could be due to the newness of the printer, toner saver settings, etc.

If you''re looking for a great laser printer for a home linux system seriously consider this one. ...

WOW. I had just bought an HP Photosmart Premium AIO and was not initially impressed with the photos prints using the HP Advanced papers. Color and contrast were great, but I could clearly see the dots in the lighter areas. Also tried Canon premium papers I had leftover and was equally disappointed that it looked worse than my 5 year old 6 ink photo printer.

I decided to give the Photo Premium Plus Glossy paper a try and was extremely impressed! The detail is amazing and I can''t see any dots other than the grain from the camera sensor at high ISOs. I am pretty picky about printer output and didn''t believe a 4 color inkjet could produce such sharp and smooth photos. Paper made all of the difference. Love the light sheen of the paper as well, feels and looks like a high quality lab print.

Highly recommended.

Avery Tickets with Tear-Away Stubs (16154)

Avery Tickets with Tear-Away Stubs, 1.75 inches x 5.5 inches, Matte White, Pack of 200
  • Get a professional-looking appearance with customizable tickets on 65 lb. cardstock
  • Free templates include sequential ticket numbering
  • Strong perforations on the stubs ensure they stay attached until the event
  • Printable on both sides
  • Compatible with both laser and inkjet printers

These tickets by Avery are nice and relatively easy to use once you figure out how to make them. The hardest part of using them, for me, was figuring out how to use the downloadable template--if you don''t want to design tickets online. (Search for template 16154 on their site). I used the template with Microsoft Word. Make sure, under Table Tools: Layout that "View Gridlines" is selected. This will show the borders in light gray. Otherwise, it''s difficult to figure out how to use the template. When I downloaded it, the borders didn''t show up, and it took a while to figure out how to change that!

The tickets are a nice thickness; about the thickness of cardstock or a business card. Fold each ticket back and forth, and they separate from one another. The area that can be torn off the tickets has a coarser (less fine) perforation, so that it doesn''t fall off when splitting apart the tickets.

I''m pleased with the results and have had no trouble with paper feed, using a laser printer. I don''t think my old ink jet would have been able to handle the ticket sheets, though.

Great concept, poor execution!

I purchased these assuming that Avery would have had a template available. Well just so you know, there isn''t one. You have to use the Design Online Tool and unfortunately it will not print out my tickets. I assumed it was a browser issue so I closed Chrome and tried Firefox and IE. No such luck. I then changed computers, twice. Nothing.

I e-mailed Avery to ask them for a template, but they don''t have one since these are new. They also told me to check my browser and try again. After day three I quit trying to pull them up and print them.

I''m going to try and use a ruler and create my own template, but fair warning don''t waste your time "designing" them online!!

I generally really like Avery templates but they seriously missed the mark here. The paper stock is fairly light compared with similar "Admit One" products it feels extremely flimsy and the tear-off stub gets damaged easily. It feeds through a laser printer with no issues but the end result doesn''t look very professional.

Getting the template set up is not at all straight forward. There are two numbers on the front of the package the large obvious one (76154) is not the one you need (16154). When searching Avery''s website with this number there are currently six templates available, all of which have a Valentine''s Day theme. If you delete everything and just use the grid in MS Word, you can probably throw together something with a fair amount of work, but unless you''re hosting a Valentine''s raffle, these prebuilt designs aren''t very useful.

The online design software provided is clunky at best with very limited features. Even the design featured on the front of the package would be very hard to reproduce in any of their software. As an upside, you can add QR codes and barcodes, but you can''t increment a number on each ticket very easily. Considering these are built for raffles and entry tickets, this is a major problem since you will likely want a different number on each ticket. The other consideration is that these are very easy to copy so wouldn''t be suitable for many raffles or ticketed events.

Overall I wasn''t very impressed with either the paper quality or design options. For ticketed events we''ve managed in the past, we''ve used a website called admitoneproducts that sells rolls of heavy, card-stock numbered tickets for around $4 per 2000. While these aren''t customized at this price, they look much more professional.

Want Avery Tickets with Tear-Away Stubs (16154) Discount?

Avery has designed this product for those looking to design and print their own tickets, where you have a ticket and a stub with matching numbers. The card stock is solid and the tear off perforation seems to function fairly well. The challenge for many will be designing the tickets. You can go to the Avery website to find the template designed for MS Word, which matches the layout of the ticket and stub. You may find that this template is confining and needs to be tweaked to get the contents you want onto your ticket. If you are adept at working with your word processor then this will not be a major issue, but if you aren''t used to editing page layouts and can only fill in template presets then you may be disappointed. Just be aware that you will need to use the Avery website to design your tickets or download a template to use with your word processor... which means they''ll have you submit your email info. I really don''t see why templates for the most common software can''t be included on a disk that would come with the ticket stock pages. In fact, it would be nice to include a software application with these tickets, one that is compatible with multiple operating systems. Overall, this is a nice product, one that allows you to create your own attractive raffle tickets or gift certificates. Just be aware that you may need some time to get the right template and fine tune your design before printing it out. It is best to print a test page on regular paper to ensure the dimensions are correct before printing onto the ticket page.

I''ve been a long time user of Avery products for many decades and have come to rely on the many products they offer in my day to day business and personal life.

The Avery 16154 tickets are of very good quality and can become very useful for our needs. They have a good thickness and feel to them and they are compatible with both laser and inkjet printers. I like the fact that you can get 10 tickets per page, verses the 8 per page of other brands.

The only con I can think of... and it is a big con and a huge nuisance is the fact that they did not create a template for any of the previous versions of DesignPro for these tickets, just an MS Word template. Since I am not a fan of MS Word and I am not familiar with this program, hence it becomes a huge nuisance.

In general, we will use this product only as long as we need to and as long as we can feel comfortable in using it. However, without a DesignPro template, it is highly unlikely that we will continue using this product in the future.

I have had this printer now for a couple of weeks and it does absolutely everything that I need a printer to do while using it in my in-home office. It is connected via ethernet to five different computers and it worked first time with every one of the computers without a single problem. The only reason I make a big deal out of this is that compared to the major #@&%* software problems I had with my old HP L7590, the Lexmark printer is a dream come true. I really don''t know if this printer is the best at printing, or scanning, or faxing, or copying, but for my money it''s the best you can find because it works without any headaches! [We have had the printer now for over 4 months. It gets used for printing and copying nearly every day. After printing thousands of pages, I am only aware of it jamming once. I actually had to go online to find out how to open the printer to clear the paper jam. My wife and I still definitely rate the printer at five stars!]

Buy Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000C Color Photo Printer with Copier and Fax Now

I''m very happy with the quality, functionality, speed, and per-page-costs of this printer Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000C Color Photo Printer with Copier and Fax. I learned about it from Consumer Reports which gave it a very high rating (just below a Canon all-in-one that costs about twice as much per page). The Lexmark OfficeEdgePro4000 does duplex printing very well (no paper jams so far) and can print from an iPad. It faxes and scans multiple pages well using the sheet feeder. The wifi also works well for multiple users from around a house or office.

It can be a little complicated to set up the wifi and faxing and scanning directly from your computer. I needed help from Lexmark with the set-up of these things but since then everything has been working fine. The main negative is tech support which can be very difficult to reach. However there is a solution-if you can''t reach tech support in a timely way by telephone, email LxkListens at Lexmark.com and a Lexmark Customer Advocate should be able to assist you. I had fantastic help from a Lexmark Customer Advocate who scheduled phone appointments with me, answered all my questions, and solved my set-up problems.

This is a great small office/home computer, by far the best I have ever owned. It prints graphics well. However it is not designed to be a high quality photo printer. While it can print photos, you will be far better off with a dedicated photo printer. You could also buy a Canon all-in-one but you will be increasing your operating costs significantly.

My final suggestion is that you shop around, including checking the cost of buying direct from Lexmark. The price has fallen and risen substantially in the past two months. However the purchase price will be dwarfed in the long run by the total of your per page printing costs. This printer starts with extremely low costs per page and allows you to save more by printing in black and white, draft, and duplex modes. I doubt that you will be able to find another printer of this quality and functionality that will be nearly as affordable to operate.

The printer is excellent, but can''t get it hooked up to wireless. Spent 3 1/2 hours on the phone and was told at the end of the phone call I had to get a new router, even though mine was only a few months old. I have been wanting to switch to Comcast anyway, so I had them come to the house and install the Internet and router. Still no luck. I don''t think anyone can hook up to the wireless ( I Googled it) which is a bummer because that is one of the reasons I bought the thing.

The installation went OK, it prints fast, nice colorbut after only 2 weeks the ink supply is half gone. I''m not sure if they put full-capacity cartridges in the new units. I bought this printer to replace my trusty old HP 720c. I suspect that HP keeps raising the price of cartridges on the older models, to force people to buy new printers. The price of the 720c cartridges doubled since I bought it 6 years ago. The ink cartridges on the D4360 are half the size of my old 720c cartridges, and I suspect that these cheap HP printers are just a pipeline in disquise for selling mass quantities of ink, because that''s probably where their real profit is.. In comparison, my 720c cartridges would last almost a year. Bottom line, if the HP D4360 printer used less ink, I''d give it 5 stars.

I''m using this printer exclusively for home and office paper work not for photo or pictures. My printing needs are approximately 3 x 500 = 1500 single sided pages a year. This will require 2 "XL" sets of color and black cartridges annually. Price efficiency of cartridge is average. Considering current market prices for cartridges approximately $30 for a set you are probably locking at 5 6 cents per single page print.

Buying this printer on the internet make sure that you are asking seller if USB2 cable is included. Brand new in original box printers are not always contain USB2 cable.

This inexpensive reliable printer provides good quality prints. Installation and manual are clear and easy to follow. Display Ink level in cartridges, is a very nice feature. The cartridges included in HP original box are not "XL" size and good for 200 pages only, but cartridges "XL" sizes are available for up to 750 pages.

We bought this exactly two years ago. It has been a great little home printer. I print about one page/day on average. It does use a fair amount of ink, but a printer is only an ink delivery system, right? Two weeks ago I would have given this model 4 1/2 stars. However....I turned it on one day and it simply would not print and the paper would feed halfway through and stop. My husband and I put probably four hours into it trying to figure it out. We tried everything and between us we are pretty good figurers. The HP Solution Center that comes with the software seemed to answer everything but our situation. Finally, I had time to call HP''s 800-number. I was quite pleased to get a live person very quickly. But then I realized her English knowledge was very limited and who knows what country she was in. She asked me if I had tried about three very minor things, which I had. Then without going particularly deep into "here''s what you can try to fix it," her training had obviously told her to stop there and give me this great answer: we''ll give you a discount on this particular new model and it will only cost you $80 (later I saw Amazon sold the same thing for $55). I told her I really like the printer and want to get it fixed. It boils down to this....if it is out of warranty, it goes to the dump. I told her how environmentally irresponsible it is of HP to operate this way. I doubt she understood me because she only kept repeating the $80 offer. I told her she had done a good job, but I was very unimpressed with HP. My husband pulled the D4360 apart more since we had nothing to lose and found broken plastic gears. It is toast. So short-term, it''s a good printer; long-term, America will have a lot of printers in its landfills.

My low end Epson printer died after outliving it''s life expectancy by two years. Desperate for an immediate replacement I opted for the HP Deskjet D4360. It''s strong points, it''s cheap and... ummm, that''s all I can come up with. The negatives... for starters, it''s a bottom feeder, in oh so many ways. Forget about printing labels, envelopes, custom forms, anything other than a standard sheet of ink jet paper will not feed through. You WILL be learning how to unjam this printer in the first day, guaranteed. The paper feed is underneath the output tray, making it very awkward to load. The page size adjuster is positioned under the lip of the output tray, designed for long, slender fingers and if it''s not adjusted exactly, the page will pull sideways and print off the page. Have templates set up to streamline your work? Forget them because this printer stretches out your document when it prints meaning it''ll never hit within your templates'' parameters. And the ink cartridges, they''re tiny... and the color cartridge is exactly the same size as the black & white cartridge. The black draws ink from the color so you''re going to know your office supply person by his first name, and helping to pay his child''s tuition. Expect an invitation to the kid''s graduation.

HP 640 Inkjet printer is defective. When unable to begin operations based on set-up instructions in manual,

called HP Service number provided. After ultimately finding the appropriate tech service person, he prescribed various diagnostics to get machine operative. All failed. He informed me that it was defective.

HP refused to replace the new machine that was bought. HP said the only remedy was to return the defective new machine to them at customer''s own expense. And that HP would only replace it with a used refurbish machine. Service people were rude and continually placed customer on hold. Poor product, poor service.

This is our first home fax machine. It was easy to put together and the directions were easy to follow to learn how to operate it. We love it. We can fax things easily and we receive things easily. Highly recommend this fax machine, especially for the quality and the price.

While the HP 640 fax works on a dedicated phone line( and yes, it works on a Comcast line), the machine does not work on a shared line in auto mode. When recognizing a voice call, the HP 640 changes the ring tone to notify you of the incoming call. Nice...BUT, after an individual picks up the phone and begins a conversation, the fax machine continues to ring and attempts to connect to a carrier; which of course, is not there. We called HP and while they were responsive, they could not resolve the problem because it is a inherent flaw of the machine. The machine also does not work on a shared line with an answering machine.

I found the machine somewhat difficult to set up & program in all the settings, my phone #, etc., that I needed to do; but probably no more difficult than other fax machines. And a major frustration: when you have it set to "auto", so it can switch between phone & fax, if you answer a phone call from a different phone, this keeps ringing & ringing thru-out the whole length of the phone call (???)--incredibly annoying.

But as I use it only occasionally, I just keep it unplugged until I need to use it. And for the $$, & esp. since it uses ink cartridges unstead of one of those awful film rolls like on my 5 y.o Sharp, it''s probably a pretty good buy.

Avery Half-Fold Greeting Cards for Inkjet Printers (03265) Save 14% off

Avery Half-Fold Greeting Cards for Inkjet Printers, 5.5 inches x 8.5 inches, White, Matte, Pack of 20
  • High-quality, matte-coated stock for vivid color and photo printing
  • Create cards for every occasion, including birthdays, graduations and Valentine''s Day or invitations for your next party
  • Easy-to-use free templates are available from avery.com
  • 20 cards and 20 matching envelopes

While this product comes in more interesting paper types--and heavier card stock--this is clearly the preferred card style for home card makers. Vastly superior to their quarter-fold counterparts, half-fold cards are what you''ll usually find commercially in card shops. Though they do fold to a somewhat larger-than Hallmark (tm) size, the after-folding allignment is dead-on, and you have more room to express yourself. If approximating the look and feel of a ''real'' store-bought card is important to you, therefore, go with this format. However, I''m partial to more textured card-stocks--Hewlett Packard makes an excellent ''felt'' ivory--so I have to drop the rating for this one down a star for its white blandness.

I have been using the Avery Half-Fold Greeting Cards # 3265 for years. I have tried many other brands. Most "glossy" card stock I have purchased is so flimsy the cards have a cheap, "funky" feel and not worth the ink. The Avery 3265 stock has a nice feel, is thick enough to feel like a real card and the print output is quite phenomenal with my Epson Stylus Photo Printer.

I have printed photo''s, clip art and every possible combination over the years on the Avery 3265 card stock and I am constantly blown away by the quality of the prints as are the people I give the cards to. Perhaps the person that can not get good photo prints on them is using the wrong printer (I use a Canon and my Epson and both get great results). I get photo-realistic prints that are just as good as on photo card stock (albeit on the 3265 matt finish). I just printed Chinese New Year cards today and one in particular, a dragon on a black background looks like the black area is pure velvet. Very cool.

I highly recommend the Avery 3265 card stock for anyone wanting to make cards from home. Just a tip. Best prints come out of an inkjet photo printer (any brand). You will use a bit of ink to make the card, but, hey, that is why you bought a photo printer. So you could make "cool" prints!

Anyway, that''s my two-cents worth :0)

This product provides a certain amount of convenience but is not anything special. It is 8.5x11-in. card stock for inkjet printers, with a crease in the middle for folding. It has a template number for use with word-processing and creative-project software, but templates can often be more trouble than they are worth, especially for the simple task of dividing a simple letter-sized sheet into two parts. There is a convenience, to be sure, in having correct-sized envelopes packaged with the paper; but again, there is nothing special about this size of envelope; and they feel somewhat flimsy, not exactly something in which to encase the results of your artistic labors.

Plain is OK, but to get a top rating from me this product would have needed to have been special in some way, such as perhaps being glossy on half of one side in order to provide a space in which to print a photo vibrantly.

I got a fabulous image from NASAs Hubble Christmas card page, and made a few modifications and used this paper to print Christmas cards, and it worked beautifully.

Somebody told me that card stock does not work well with the duplexer on my printer, and so I printed one side, and then printed the other manually. I have no idea if it would have printed both sides automatically if I''d tried it.

The cards were easy to print (once I got the art the way I wanted it to be--proof on regular paper) and looked great.

How can it be better than that?
