Have used many Epson papers with my Epson 7900 printer. I shoot mostly portraits, but some still lifes, flowers, and other things with which to produce art prints for mounting, framing, sale, etc. The recent (fairly recent) release of Epson Cold Press and Hot Press papers caused me to try them out. Have tried both natural and bright versions of each in 8 x 10 and 17 x 22 (my favorite size for art printing). Hot Press is smooth, Cold Press is textured.

Bottom line, I have adopted Cold Press bright for nearly everything. It is fantastic for portraiture--absolutely perfect color reproduction (of course, the 7900 uses HDR pigment inks which are state of the art) on a solid heavyweight paper.

If you are serious about your photography or art, try the Cold Press bright in 17 x 22. About 4 plus bucks a sheet but worth every penny.

I''ve had this printer for several months now, and thus far, have been very happy with it. I don''t print out a high volume of documents, so both the price and printer fit my needs perfectly.

I tend to only print out various Word documents and/or website pages, and the speed is not bad. I have also printed out some digital pictures, and they turned our surprisingly sharp. While you could tell they were printed pictures (compared to something like Ofoto), they are nice enough that you could hang around the house. I wouldn''t use this printer primarily for digital pictures, however. While the quality is okay, it''s not great enough that I''d want *all* of my photos to be from this printer.

My only minor complaint is that the cartridges haven''t lasted me as long as the previous HP printer I had. After three months, I had to replace the cartridges which seems fast. It''s one of the main reasons why I recommend not using this for digital pictures (not to mention I''m sure there are better quality printers out there that are geared towards digital photographs). So, yes, this would be fine for printing out pictures occasionally, yes, but not frequently.

One small thing that I like is it prints pages in reverse chron order, page 3, page 2, then page 1. My previous printer printed them page 1 first, page 2, etc., so I had to shuffle through the papers and reorder them. Yes, a minor issue, but it was annoying if you printed more than 10 pages or so.

Overall, I would recommend this printer for the person who doesn''t need to print a high volume of documents (or digital photos). For the home computer user like me, it''s perfect.

So far no problems, had the printer for about 3 months now, printed about 500 pages and just ran out of ink. A good number of those pages where high quality prints. My last printer was an HP multifunction and it gave me hell, but HP took it back after 6 months and gave me 90% of my money back. So I went simple.

Now, I admit there are definitely printers with more bells and whistles. Sure I would have liked to get one with the scanner/copier/fax, but I was NOT in a position to spend $100.

For less than $40, this printer has not given me ANY trouble. I have had NO paper jams. I have had NO "freezing up" or non-responsiveness. I have had NO smears. I use it for both normal printing, and for photo printing.

If you want to print 100 photos, I would recommend going to your local drug store. But to do a few, this printer does the job. For example on Mother''s Day, I gave my mother and my sister photo montage picture frames (you know, they have all the different shaped holes in them), I printed my own photos and put them together. The printer worked just as fast as I did, I could pick up one photo from the printer, get it taped into the frame, and go pick up another one. I can print 4 X 6 photos, I can print 8 X 10 photos, I can print all sizes in-between.

Listen to this! I am STILL ON THE PARTIALLY FILLED INK CARTRIDGES THAT CAME WITH MY PRINTER OVER 6 MONTHS AGO! Even though I use this printer every day! I print photos, emails, recipes, payment receipts for bills, word searches for my niece, coloring pages for my nephew, postage and packing slips and address labels for my eBay business, everything you can think of I print it.

I usually use the default "Quick-Set" for printing, but you can design your own if you need to. When I am printing things for myself I use the "fast/economical" setting. It sure is economical as I said, I have yet to go through the first ink freebies I received. I use the "general/everyday" setting for things I need to look nice. I use the "borderless photo" or "photo with border" settings depending on what I am doing. Or of course, I can manually design my own Quick-Set to use over and over, or I can just change settings on a print by print basis.

I don''t know what more I could ask of a printer for this price. If you don''t need to scan/copy/fax, I would recommend this compact and eye-pleasing workhorse for anyone who doesn''t want to, or cannot afford to, pay more than $40

This printer is great for every day use. I have had it for a month now and I have never had any problems. Having three college students in the same house requires a good economical printer and this printer has not failed any of us.

I reviewed these once before, but apparently I bought them from a different vendor this time. As long as you are getting XL cartridges, the vendor doesn''t really matter. Shop around for the best price. This vendor sent them to me quickly and they arrived in good condition.

Inkjet cartridges definitely don''t last as long as laser printer cartridges do. But be aware that the ink indicator on your printer will probably recommend cartridge replacement long before you really need it. I have had no problems continuing to print for several months after the "low ink" warning comes on. Eventually the printer just refuses to print when the cartridge is "really" empty.

I used two sets of standard cartridges in the first three months, but the XL cartridges lasted more than 9 months, even after my kids began to discover a variety of craft and art projects that were very color intensive.

I''m not trying to print quality photos or anything like that, but these seem to work quite well for printing color text and graphics, Fritzing diagrams, and photos contained in PDF documents on the cheapest office paper I can find.

Invent It! tends to take an idea already in the marketplace and put a slightly more "home hobby" twist to it. What Invent It! does here is change the standard configuration of the sheets. Other manufacturers include three, letter-sized sheets with no scoring of any kind. Invent It! gives you one full sheet, one sheet with precut rectangles, and one sheet with precut circles.

While I admit that some hobbyists may like the convenience of pre-scored sheets, I personally found it annoyingly limiting to be forced into these shapes. I can''t, therefore, see more than a novelty use for this pack. It would make sense if Invent It! created a pack of each kind of sheet, because that would give consumers the opportunity to buy sheets for particular projects. This way, however, you have to spend a prohibitive amount of money to get enough sheets to make even a modest run of, say, magnetic business cards.

As for their general quality, Invent It! gives us slightly less powerful magnetics, and a material that is irrevocably stained by water. They are best on kitchen doors, or other areas of highly concentrated, magnetically conducive metal. For example, they hardly stick at all to stainless steel, and they also seem to have their functionality compromised by refrigerated or moist areas. Indeed moisture does seem to discolor the base color of the sheets, permanently changing that color from white to a very dull pearl. Fortunately, the material is such that the design itself will not bleed when wet, as is the case when inkjets print on paper.

I must point out that none of the three manufacturers I tested performed much better under what might be considered "extreme" conditions. None stuck to stainless to any great degree, and all discolored under moisture--though others did so less permanently. Invent It! did actually lose some magnetivity when exposed to water after adherence, actually curling slightly under the strain. Other manufacturers, notably Xerox, seemed to have slightly improved magnetics overall, sticking better to more types of metallic surfaces. None seemed eager to be used on already-moist surfaces, but Xerox in particular seemed to withstand moisture better if, for instance, condensation appeared after sticking the magnet to the surface.

In sum, then, I think Invent It! would be perfectly fine for making exterior refrigerator or interior car magnets, but this particular collection of shapes will be limiting to most creative minds. Businesses looking to use this product for routine labeling of work areas will be best advised to look for other manufacturers, or even to consider transparent decals.

Brother PT-2700 Desktop Labeling System (Silver/Black)

I have had one of the smaller Brother personal labelers for many years, and it sat there in its little case, waiting for those occasions when I needed a label badly enough to take it out and bother with it. Why the hassle? Because it had a tiny keyboard that required lots of SHIFT and FUNCTION key alternates to get at common characters and functions, and because the display was tiny and did not show enough information (such as what the label would actually look like, and how big it would actually be). The labels themselves were fine, and the machine worked reliably, though.

I called Brother and asked them about if they had a similar label printer that would just connect to my computer, so that I could design and see the labels before wasting label material in trial-and-error efforts. They told me that the model PT-2700, and its companion PT-2710 had recently been introduced with such request in mind. I had not seen these in my local office supply store, because Office Max often carries only the cheaper models in a line as large as the Brother P-Touch series. I went back to the store and lo! ....they had just started to carry the PT-2700 at less than $100.

I am delighted with this label printer. It is connected to my computer via USB, just like my other printers. I can use either, or both, of the two printing utilities that came with the printer. One is a very simple editor that gives basic functionality where you don''t care so much about exactly how big the label will end up, for example this ends up being much like the guess-work process of the older and smaller P-Touch labelers. The other utility is a full functioned label designer with every bell and whistle I can think of. It automatically knows which kind of label cartridge is currently plugged into the printer, and shows a scale image of that label on the computer screen. Any Windows font in any point size, with any effect can be used in the label design. You can have multiple lines, multiple columns, different test fields, automatically filled-in fields, bar codes, clip art, line drawings, etc. The display in this editor is very WYSIWYG. A ruler hovers over the label to show exactly how big it will be. You can vertically or horizontally justify text as well. There seems to be no limit on how many fonts, sizes and effects can be used on a single label. You can have a different font, size and effect for each character if you want.

The installation CD-ROM also adds a macro to Microsoft Office applications, basically giving you a P-Touch icon in the toolbar of those programs (much like Adobe Acrobat does). Any selected items in those applications will be copied to the P-Touch application by clicking that new icon (the application will automatically open if not already running). Formatting is copied over with the text, etc.

Clicking the PRINT icon in either utility will cause the printer to shoot out a label in just a few seconds; I would guess about 1" per every 2 second or thereabouts. The printer automatically cuts off the leading edge, because that part might be curled if the printer has been sitting for a while, unused. The printer also cuts off the label at the end. While it prints, it slits the backing paper so that it comes off very easily (the smaller P-Touch machines do not do this, and getting the paper off can be a pain).

The PT-2710 is the same as the PT-2700, with the addition of a carrying case this adds about $30 to the street price.

This printer uses the more expensive "TZ" series of tape cartridges. This kind of tape comes in a much greater variety of sizes, colors, and special types. TZ tapes also have a plastic lamination over the printing, so the image will not scratch off. Don''t ask me how they do this! One gotcha with these tapes is that they are stored inside the cartridge in a pretty tight loop on the reels. When the labels come out, they are not curled but watch out! When you remove the backing paper, they immediately want to return to their curled shape. Make sure that you have both ends of the label under some sort of control when removing the paper, of you will end up with a suddenly tangled bunch of plastic tape in your hands.

The printer can be used without a computer or USB connection. In this mode, it has a large blue-backlit LCD display with multiple lines. However, it is not WYSIWYG as you type your text and you can''t tell how big the label will be as you design it. Also in this mode of operation, you are limited to a few fonts and 8 point sizes from 6 to 42 plus Extra Large size. The keyboard is more typewriter-like than the smaller ones, at 7" wide, with a normal QWERTY layout requiring no FUNCTIONs or SHIFTS to get at the functions. I said before that it''s not WYSIWYG and you can''t tell the size...that is true only in text entry mode. There is a Preview button, and when this is pressed, the display shows you what the label will actually look like, pretty much at actual size (the display scrolls for wider label previews), and it tells you how wide the label will be at this time. In preview, the correct fonts and effects are also visible.

The TZ tapes come in sizes of 9/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1" wide. You can buy them in quite a range of colors. The basic is black on white, but common colors in the stores are black on yellow, red on white, etc. The Brother website lists a large variety of sizes and colors that are probably too specialized for most stores to stock; you can order them online.

There are 8 built-in fonts, from an Ariel-like sans-serif one called Helvetica, to a serifed one similar to Times Roman, plus script, stencil and other decorative fonts. You can select Auto type size, where the printer makes the text as large as possible while still fitting on the label, or you can select from the 8 font sizes. You can adjust the width factor of the characters, and you can apply styles to the fonts: these include Normal, Bold, Outline, Shaded, Heavy with outline shadow, and the same 5 choices with Italics applied.

The printer is very reasonably priced at around $100 street, and its build quality is very nice. It feels like quality equipment, although I have seen better-feeling small keyboards than this. The TZ tape is where Brother will get their money, since the cartridges run around $20 each, plus or minus a few dollars depending on how fancy the tape is. The iron-on and other specialty tapes are the most expensive.

The labels print at 180 DPI, which is not very high. When a label comes out, it seems crisp and precise in the appearance of the characters, but closer inspection will reveal very slight jaggies at the edges of slanted or curved shapes. To me, it looks like an ink-jet printer output when using cheap bond paper, when the ink has bled a little on the fibers. Since you will not be preparing long novels of small type with this machine, the quality is more than adequate, and it does look nice.

With such a nice machine and low price, Brother should do well with this printer.

I have been purchasing P-Touch labeling systems for about 20 years, and this is the best one ever. The PT-2700 has the new design. I particularly like the following new/improved features: (1) can choose full width, 1/2 width, and 2/3 width spacing; (2) trims both sides of a label if you choose narrow margins (saves tape); (3) individually adjust most important features; (and 4) accepts 1 inch tape.

I got to play with a labeler at my workplace a PT-60 Home&Hobby model, and I loved it. Well, I loved how easy it was to use and I just love feeling organized and having things nicely labeled. Prior to this, I was printing out labels using address labels, cutting them to size, then putting clear tape over them whenever I did not want them to get wet. Yeah I do no know how I''ve survived until now without a real labeler! Well, after using the PT-60, I started researching for my own labeler. At first, I was going to get the PT-85, but then I read reviews for the PT-2700 and I was hooked. I knew I would be using the labeler a lot so I wanted an ability to plug the machine into a outlet. I''m also a formatting freak and love fonts, cliparts, etc, and what a perfect match this PT-2700 is for me. I have not used it as a stand alone device, but it sits as a perpetual companion next to my computer because I use it all the time. There is a long review about this labeler that is very very good and comprehensive. It helped me determine which one to buy. But here are the things I love about this one:

1. Has AC adapter I haven''t used the batteries because like I said it''s always plugged in and hooked up to my PC via USB

2. Comes with USB (the PT-1950 functions similarly but you have to buy your own USB)

3. Formatting software is really easy to use if you install any new fonts, it automatically grabs those fonts so you can choose from them

4. I can print pretty labels (laminated, professional looking) and have used them for all kinds of purposes: spice bottles, food containers (when I''ve bought food in bulk and portioned them out), cosmetic sample containers (for travel purposes), file labels, my Treo, my pager, my jump drive, my favorite pens (see I''m a freak), storage containers in our garage, our circuit breaker, burned DVDs/CDs the list is endless.

5. You can save any label you''ve created. This is so awesome if you like a certain formatting, no need to re-invent the wheel -it saves so much time. One of my favorite functions!

6. You can print all font sizes even Arial 8pt is quite readable! The TZ tape is wonderful sticks really easily though I haven''t used them on rough surfaces. The split backing makes removal a cinch much easier than the labels created with the PT-60. I''ve only used the 1/2" tape and am still on the sample cartridge that came with the machine.

7. I got it for a steal at Staples recently when they offered a $50 rebate so in the end I''ll only have paid $49. I almost went with the PT-85 b/c I didn''t want to shell out $100. Just b/c hindsight is 20/20 if I had gotten PT-85 and then got a chance to play with this 2700, I would have really kicked myself!

8. My only complaint with this labeler (and it''s not unique to this one apparently) is that if you have it on the auto-cut setting, it creates a large margin when it prints out (even if you set the margins to smallest setting) and you waste a lot of tape. So I have it set on chain which means it doesn''t auto-cut. I print out one label and wait. Then I print out another & my first label appears and I use scissors to cut the first label. Yeah, to save tape, you''d have to have some patience but since I''m always labeling something, I don''t have to wait long! If I need it right away, I''ll go ahead & have it fed out and cut but the huge margins just kill me!

All in all, I''ve been enraptured by this new machine the fact that it excites me more than anything I''ve ever owned probably means I need to be on some type of medication. I did also order the PT-85 (just $25 on Amazon), but as a gift for my dad b/c he suffers from the same affliction I do. He''s going to love using it for labeling his pickling jars! I didn''t get him the 2700 b/c even though he has a computer, it usually intimidates him (the man still owns a typewriter for crying out loud! At least it''s a Brother :).

Update 10/10/12: I still have this labeler and it''s still in excellent condition. I use it all the time. I work in a pharmacy and I love to use the labeler to label shelves, filing cabinets, our counting robots, staff mailboxes, etc. The labeler sits on my desk at work, always connected to my PC. I see the price has gone up on Amazon used to see it for $99! It''s one of the best purchases I''ve ever made. I love seeing it on my desk. In our chaotic fast-paced ever changing environment, my labeler has been a constant reliable companion. When I see it on my desk, a certain peace settles over me. Yes, I''m on the same medication.

Great product that works exactly as described. I have not used this as a stand-alone label maker; I''ve only used it with my computer. The software is fairly easy to use, and it will pull data from an Excel spreadsheet, which is a definite plus. I had a spreadsheet of over 300 items for which I needed to make labels, and linking to the Excel doc made the process very quick and convenient. The only complaint I have is that the tape for the label maker is rather pricey. I spent $40 on the label maker, and so far I''ve spent $60 on tape.

This is a great buy for a labeler. Main draw for me was being able to print 3 lines on the 1/2" tape. It works great and has a lot of frills. It can go throught tape a bit faster than I''d like with its clean edge feature that feeds and cuts before every new label, but this can be reduced by having it on chain labels.

Received the printer in normal Amazon packaging, box within a box. Easy to open, easy to unpack. All of the various parts are clearly and easily differentiated and marked (ie the cables/cords were separately packaged, not all mixed up in one package). Print cartridges were shrink wrapped and easy to handle. Printer itself is rather large and bulky, but not heavy. All cables were included, including the USB cable needed for setup (even wireless setup). The only cable you might want but is not included is an ethernet cable if you want to directly connect it to your wireless router.

Being that this is a printer ONLY (not a scanner, fax, or copier), Epson took the time to make it the most user friendly printer I''ve seen in awhile. The entire top opens up for easy access for ink maintenance and/or paper jams. The power button, Wifi button, cancel button, etc are all on the top of the unit and clearly marked. The lights are bright (but not too bright) and easy to read. One note: The newer electronics have the blue led lights, but this printer''s lights are green and orange...not sure if this matters to you or not, but some people like to have them all the same.

The paper is enclosed into a paper tray that is very nice--it keeps the paper straight and clean, with no way to come askew or jam. The paper tray for your printed pages is right in front, and is a typical pull out open ledge.

Set up was a bit tricky for me, since I have a merged home network, and I wanted to try to set it up wirelessly. Even by Epson''s own admission, setting it up wirelessly (without using the USB cord) wasn''t recommended, and I can see why. I played with it for 1/2 an hour before finally submitting to the recommended USB setup, which took seconds. Software installation was seamless, and completely automatic.

I had tried to connect it to one of my merged networks that has WPS, and it worked perfectly without using the USB cord, however, I needed to link it with the second network which is WEP and has no WPS, so that is what required me to use the USB. If you have a simple WPS router, it will work GREAT with the wireless setup.

Installing the ink is easy and CLEAN. No smudged fingers. That was very nice. It takes a few minutes for the machine to prep the ink cartridges, but it saves you from having to have messy cartridges. I like that!

There was no process for aligning the cartridges or wasting paper with color tests. The test page was optional and wasn''t full of graphics so you don''t waste a bunch of ink on a required set up step.

I was able to print from all 4 computers in the house, after installing the software and drivers on each computer. It makes very nice looking prints, although the time to print is not as quick as other printers. It is great that it will do two-sided printing, and when you''re printing out some long boring document, you can save paper.

The print quality was very nice. Deep blacks and bright colors. Usually I use an HP photosmart printer and the color on this Epson is better, with more contrast and depth to the color prints. The clarity of the prints is very nice--crisp and clear. It also prints photos--which look marvelous, with nice deep color saturation.

So, if you''re looking for a basic printer, without bells and whistles and extras like the scanner/fax/copier (which most peoplel don''t use anyway), created by a quality manufacturer that''s been around a long time, who has put some effort and quality in a specialty product, this printer is a great choice.

I just finished a 1 hour 20 minute session with Epson Tech Support, both level 1 and finally level 2 support.

They candidly admit they have a problem with WiFi on this printer. It seems related to Win 7, but it may not be. One tech told me it was an Epson Software problem.

The printer worked fine when cabled and connected to my computer, but the software driver for WiFi printing would not install.

The fix had to do with resetting the I.P. address. I wish I understood just what we did, but the printer now works fine, wirelessly.

Do not buy this printer unless you are fairly computer literateand have the time and patience to work through the WiFi issues.

Printer gets a 3 star, Epson tech support staff 12 stars.

I bought this printer March 11, 2012 and the idea of this printer was to be used only for text. I have a Epson R3000 that I use only for photos. This printer isn''t the fastest printer I owned but I always had a Canon printer for text and they were fast. The Work Force 60 is a bottom tray paper feeder which I never had in all the 30 to 35 Epson and Canon printers I owned since I started using a computer 13 years ago. My main gripe about this printer is that it has a tendency to jam. When you get to the last 10 or so sheets of paper in the tray all 10 sheets or so are pushed through the printer. They are simple jams but they still are a pain. If you use a slightly heavier paper it will also jam. The largest paper you can use is 8-1/2 x 11. Because this printer is so finicky sometime just one sheet of plain white paper will jam which is another pain I would have to contend with.

Some of the reasons I bought this printer was that it starts up right away unlike the Canons that do a song & dance routine before it starts printing. Another reason 3rd party ink were available for this printer which BTW is very good ink (EnviroInks). So rather than give somebody the burden by trying to sell or give this printer away I''m just going to dump it. The printer I just ordered to replace the Epson 60 is a Canon iX 6520 which has very good reviews and there is plenty of 3rd party inks available which means now I will have to live with the song & dance routine the Canons go through before they start printing.

The prints lack the vibrancy I''d expect from a current-generation printer.

During some prints, it sucked up two papers at once and ran them through. This resulted in a print that spanned the second half of one paper and the first half of the next.

Summary:

All in all, I would be a little leery about purchasing these in bulk for my small business. Although I haven''t had it long enough to comment about the durability, I would guess that, based on build quality, that this printer may not be the workhorse that most businesses would like it to be. Beware this product: this printer is a scam to sell ink cartridges (hence the cheap price).

Every time you print with an Epson NX100, you will see an ad to "buy more ink" from the Epson website (where ink is overpriced). This is annoying, but does not kill the product.

What kills the product is that the ink cartridges contain a chip that tells the printer when you should buy more ink (this is 175 pages). While my cartridge has plenty of ink, the chip tells my computer I need to buy a new cartridge. I cannot print again until I buy a new cartridge or hack a way to reset the chip (checking now for software online).

Since a new set of cartridges costs more than the price of the printer, and refilling the cartridges manually is not an option, I may very well end up buying a new printer now that the ink has run out in my Epson NX100. What a scam. What a crap product. 175 pages is all you get?

If there are any positive review for this product, they are from people who have not yet printed 175 pages.

Maybe Epson has found a way to make money in the extremely competitive printer market, but their approach is offensive. The printer comes with extremely short lived cartridges. Replacing the set with decent ink one time can match the price of the printer. Once the your color cartridges are done, which happened very quickly with little to no actual use, the printer does not work at all (even for black printing only). AND Epson has added additional sensors so that electronically resetting the color cartridges, which works for early Epsons, does not allow you to print in black ink only.

The printer/scanner combination, on the other hand, seems solid, if slow. But it costs much too much to keep running. I have decided that it is cheaper to junk this new 2-month old printer and start over.

Epson has made their ink proprietary, which means your only option is to buy and rebuy ink every month or two in tiny, wafer thin cartridges designed to expire quickly. And they''ve rigged the cartridges so that you can''t buy refilled ink cartridges cheaply online; it has to be the Epson brand. Utter anti-consumer waste.

I picked up this printer on sale at a store, because of its extremely low price. Buyer beware. If you visit Epson''s own site, the FAQs acknowledge that the printer will not print at all if any one of the colors of ink is expended. So, you can''t print in black ink if you''re all out of blue, even if your document is all black text. No way to print your document in another color the printer shuts down completely and cannot be used until you replace the depleted cartridge. And I''d say that 175 pages is extraordinarily optimistic. I doubt you get 100 pages before a cartridge is depleted, and then the printer is UNUSABLE until you replace that color cartridge. Total ripoff.

I received this printer as part of a package with my Gateway computer. I agree with the others that the Epson NX105 printer is just a scam. The ink may or may not have actually run out but the printer stops printing even when some of the colors have ink left in the cartridge. At no point did my printing look light as was the indication of low ink with other printers. The order ink from Epson screen comes up and is virtually impossible to get rid of. I hope those who gave this printer a good initial review will go back on line and re-review once they have printed 100 pages and have a printer that refuses to print. Reviews are the only way we have to punish the makers of such a consumer un-friendly product.

The Canon i9900 employs eight (8) cartridges. For several years I purchased the Canon 8-pack of refills. The eight separate colors seem to run out in even succession--except for the red and green--I have several new cartridges in my drawer. The six-pack does not include the red and green. Perfect! By the way, the Canon i9900 has been flawless for the several years I''ve owned it. And the photo color and clarity continues to amaze everyone. This may have something to do with the fact that I have never used any ink but the genuine Canon ink. I recieved the MFC-5100C this afternoon, with some trepidation about MacOS X support. I''m happy to report that it works without a hitch in OS X, both for printing and scanning. No USB cable in the box, but that seems to have become standard practice for printer manufacturers.

Print quality is decent. Not on par with the latest/best inkjets, but they cost more than this machine, and don''t have scanner/fax capabilities. And inkjet printing has come so far in the last few years that this ''ok'' modern printer is far better than the standard a few years ago.

Scan quality (via the TWAIN driver) is good as well. Again, not as good as more expensive scanners, but quite acceptable for an economical multifunction machine. Scanning speed is good as well. Minor gripe, that may not be Brother''s fault i can scan with no problems into Adobe Photoshop and some other apps, but Image Capture.app goes haywire with this TWAIN driver. Might be Apple''s fault though, since the driver works fine with other apps.

So far my only concern is that the scanner light stays on permanently, and there is no on/off switch for the unit. So the unit is presumably sucking power and wearing out the scanner light 24 hours a day. :(

Buy Brother MFC-5100c Multifunction Now

Recieved the MFC-5100C this afternoon from Amazon.com. Was worried that some of the reviews indicated some problems existed with installation. Happy to report that it works without a hitch on Windows 98. Came with a USB cable in the box, but have been using the parallel line so far. Will have to add a USB Hub to attach the printer using the USB line since it was not included in the box --Didn''t think they would include a Hub.

Print quality is OK for home. Not on par with the latest/best inkjets, but at [this price] one can not complain, besides the best inkjets cannot do everything the 5100C can do.

Scan quality is good as well. Again, not as good as more expensive scanners, but quite acceptable for an economical multifunction machine. Scanning speed is good as well.

So far my only issue is that the scanner light stays on permanently, and there is no on/off switch for the unit. So the unit is presumably sucking power and wearing out the scanner light 24 hours a day. Which means it will break sooner than later. Hopefully Brother will read this review and add an on/off switch.

This product is not as well-built as my previous fax-printer: HP K60. There are severl problems with this MFC: 1. When I connect it to my PC (Window XP) with a USB cable, my computer could not shut down properly. When I connect it to my PC with a IEEE 1284 cable, my computer was able to shut down properly. 2., I had to purchase the USB and IEEE 1284 cable. 3., The function screen keeps saying that I have a paper jam when I don''t have a paper jam. 5-10 years ago, I had a black and white laser MFC from Brother. I also encountered many paper jam problems with that MFC. At that time, the paper either kept jamming up, or the screen kept saying that there was a paper jam when there was not a paper jam. 4., The white scanning light bulb would not turn off. I don''t know if it''s supposed to turn off after a few minutes, but it''s on all the time, even after many days of non-usage. I wonder if the scanning light bulb will last long if it''s on all the time. 5., When I print with recycled printing paper (I use the back of non-essential printed papers), the feeder would often pick up two pages at once, instead of feeding one page at a time. 6., the quality of the Normal resolution of MFC 5100c is not as good as the Normal resolution of my previous HP K60. I need to go to SuperFine in order to get acceptable resolution.

The good qualities about this product is: 1., it prints much faster than my previous HP K60. 2., the MFC color is slightly richer than the HP K60. 3., the price is cheaper. 4., it''s has a flatbed, so it can scan bulky or hard documents.

I don''t understand how this product could get a bad review from anyone, especially concerning problems with XP. I have XP Pro and have not had 1 single problem out of this machine in the 9 months since I bought it. The printing speed is good, the scanning speed is good, and the fax/pc fax is excellent. Of course I have common sense and some people seem to lack it; when you print color pics at high resolution it will take longer than printing black and white text at a draft resolution, something some folks just do not understand. Yes it has a large footprint, but I guarantee it is smaller than the footprints left by a separate printer, scanner, copier, and fax. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in a multifunction machine.

It''s a bit large but this is very functional unit. I had no trouble with Windows XP and was able to set it up as a Network printer for my other computers (Windows Me and 95 very easily. Unlike my old HP T45 unit which had a slow clunky startup everytime you turn on your computer this is much faster. There are fixes for the resolution of the scanner on the Website.When you are printing pictures or graphics I found it better to set it to Photo (not auto) in the Advanced setup.

I''ve had the 3330 for about 6 weeks and am very happy so far. Two concerns so far, one is with using odd sized paper, and the other is the scanner function. If scanning is an important function, you will want a different machine, I''ve never had a dedicated scanner that was so very slow. Making copies and sending faxes goes well, not sure why the scanner is so slow.

I use Windows XP Home and had some trouble with using odd size paper, e.g. small envelopes, 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" paper, etc. HP Service wasn''t very helpful, just suggesting that I reinstall the drivers. Did get it working by defining custom paper sizes in my MS Office suite, so now it works fine with any paper I want to use.

Except for the paper problem, and the slow scanning I would have given it 5 stars

I have had my HP Laserjet 3330 for a couple of years now. Despite its fairly bulky size, I enjoy being able to get my separate printer, scanner, and fax machine off my desk, so I save a lot of space. The flatbed scanner was a must-have feature, and I love the automatic document feeder. Print quality is consistently speedy and high quality and I save bundles compared to an inkjet-based multifunction. (Those may cost less initially, but you''ll pay for it in those overpriced ink cartridges!).

My primary use for this device is as a printer, my main complaint is the paper tray is very cheap and poorly designed. Try to remove the tray without removing the paper first and you have a big mess on your hands.

As a fax machine, this is a huge step up from my old dedicated fax machine, since I can fax directly from my computer, with the flatbed scanner, or with the automatic document feeder. I do have a couple of gripes with the fax software, though (see list of gripes below).

As a scanner, I love having both the automatic document feeder and the flatbed scanner for scanning oddly-shaped documents. When I first purchased it, the ADF was horribly slow because the scan head would have to go all the way over to the left edge to reach the adf, then returned all the way to the right edge between each page. It made it slow and tedious. HP fixed that bug with a BIOS update available on their web site in early 2003. Otherwise, I love its ability to put a big stack of documents in and walk away. I have scanned thousands of black-and-white documents and the speed is adequate and the ADF rarely misfeeds. Do NOT, however, purchase this scanner for its ability to scan photographs. Color scans are of dissapointingly poor quality. (pretty much unusable for high quality scanning of photos).

I have great success networking this printer in a peer-to-peer environment. I think there was some comment about being able to use the scanner and fax functions from networked computers, but I have never attempted this.

Gripes:

I had hoped to clear up my desk with a multifunction that could do everything I wanted to do with a printer, fax, and scanner. Now it appears that I need to purchase a scanner for scanning my color photographs since the quality is so poor. I get streaking lines through all darkly-colored sections of a photo. The scanner is fairly slow, and the maximum DPI is 600 dpi. There is no available transparency adapter for this scanner if you wanted to scan negatives, although with the color scanning quality problems and low scan resolution you wouldn''t want to try.

The software that ships with this, and all HP products, IMHO is of very poor quality. My third-party scan drivers that work with most TWAIN-based scanners won''t work with this scanner, either. The fax software is fine if you want to send pages from all one application, but it lacks the ability to temporarily store pages if you want to fax some sheets from, say, Excel, with a cover page from Word. You have to print some of them out and put them in the ADF, which seems kind of wasteful, but I don''t fax a huge volume so it hasn''t affected me as much as it might affect others.

Overall

At the time I purchased this unit, I felt it was the best laser-based multifunction on the market. When you purchase a multifunction, you are sacrificing your ability to get the best of each product; fax, scanner, and printer. Of course, you don''t have to have three pieces of equipment on your desk, either. In this case, recognize that the scanner is probably the weakest link in this product and I would emphasize that if you are purchasing this product for scanning black-and-white documents, you will probably be happy with it. If you have hopes of digitizing your photo albums, keep looking.

Have had this for about six months; a nice unit overall. Send & receive faxes fine, and makes good copies at a decent clip, all things considered.

However, I would have to recommend avoiding this model if you are a Mac user (under OS 10.2.4, as of April 1, 2003). Scanning is just about non-existant and printing is extremely slow. When it does print, though, it is clear and sharp.

PC/Windows users will not suffer these same problems, and I would wholeheartedly recommend this to them. However, I would recommend going with a unit from Brother (I''ve owned the MFC-9700 and just ordered an MFC-9800) which is historically much more Mac-friendly.

I am using this product with a JetDirect print server. It scans, faxes, and prints over my network with no problems.BUT, the scanner carriage wastes time traveling to the opposite side for ADF scanning. It wasted even more time when the carriage would doulble pass per page using the ADF until I upgraded to the lastest firmware. The scanner carriage has a nervous twitching habit for no apparent reason. For faxing, this product is snobby when it come to socializing with other(COMM ERROR 321)fax machines, whereas the competitive products talk just fine to all fax machines using my same senario. YES...I have a clean phone line. YES...I''ve tried all possible combinations of V.34 and ECM being either on or off. I''ve been into the Developer''s Menu. Have no clue on solving the fax issue in here. PRINTING IS FLAWLESS. If this poduct could digest some attention deficit disorder medication, then it would have some potential.
