HP charges about three times more for a new cartridge of this type. I have now gone through 3 of these cartridges with my LaserJet 1018, and I have had no problems. The cartridges last about 2,000 pages each, so the price-per-page is only a little over 1 cent (as opposed to 3 cents per page if you buy the official cartridges from HP). I also buy my paper by the case from Staples, so my total price-per-page of printing is about 2.5 cents. Very good deal, considering that I used to pay over 10 cents per page with an HP inkjet printer and official ink/paper supplies.

I initially gave this a rave review but I''ve got to come and change it to reflect a new experience with it. At first, it printed just fine. Couldn''t tell the difference between it and the OEM one. Now, a month or so later, it leaves vertical lines. After every 10 copies or so, I''ve got to remove the cartridge and shake it, and hope that fixes it. If it fixes it, it will re-appear after another dozen copies. Sometimes it will simply have a blank vertical space that runs the length of the page.

This Kit is Garbageyou cant print on to the card itself you have to first print on a plastic sheet and then transfer that image to the card. And to keep the image from smearing put an overlay on top of that. I used a Epson R280 printer and the quality of image is horrible, even at multiple settings. The sheet they give just cant absorb the ink. Ive let them know about their product and haven''t gotten a response back. If you are looking for a inkjet PVC card look for one that you can print directly on to the card, because THIS KIT IS GARBAGE.

first off this kit was missing 1 of the printing sheets but one email later and it was in the mail. the sheets print insanly nicly and dry quickly. one dry they are hard to smugg unless you get water on them. this is why insted of cutting and then applying like the instructions say you should apply and the take an exacto nife around the card to cut out....water is used on the addhisive backing thats why i mention this. i hope to soon have a youtube video out explaining how to use the kit.

This ID making kit is excellent. Student IDs, driver''s licenses, corporate IDs, this kit does it all. Of course the magnetic strip doesn''t actually work, so you can''t use these cards to get into corporate headquarters (and you definitely shouldn''t give them to a cop if you get pulled over!) but they work fine in most everyday situations. They get an A+ in bar light or if you''re just using them to copy a friend''s museum membership card or Six Flags season pass.

However, I have to say the best ID card I''ve made with this kit is for Goldman Sachs. Those guys get free admission to museums, better seating at restaurants, access to executive washrooms around the city (the good ones), and a discount rate on parking tickets. Man, I had a great time with that thing until some snooty maître d'' told me "Money Inspector" wasn''t a real job title.

I bought this machine about a week ago and have used almost all of its features. I am very impressed with the quality, user interface, and versatility. It''s pretty easy to program and the user manual is pretty good, and they also have an 800 number for support which I called. Their support was pretty good, although the person I spoke with seemed to need a different job.

I agree with the previous post that the scanning software could be better, but most programs have scanner acquisition built in so it''s not a big deal. But I will say that even though the machine has a special button to press for scanning, there isn''t a section in the user''s manual about scanning. Must have been an oversight. But it was not that difficult to figure out. I was totally amazed at how great the print quality was when I printed photos from a Kodak CD that I had made when I processed prints. The prints I made were superior to the photographs in that they were much more vibrant and alive than the photos. I used Epson Glossy Photo Paper which I got at a warehouse club.

I have only used the doc feeder a few times. This was one of the reasons why I chose this machine because the feeder was built better than the competition and it''s a real time-saver. But it has worked flawlessly in the few times I''ve used it. Faxing works great and you can even keep the machine off and it will turn itself on when it senses a fax coming in. Copying is very good too. Print quality is very good, but it''s not laser quality; it''s definitely an inkjet. I have a laser as well, so this does not bother me. I have not used the network feature or the interface for digital camera media.

I did a lot of research on the other products and came very close to buying a similar HP costing about a hundred dollars more. But I am glad I didn''t. This is an amazing machine for the very reasonable price. It''s well built, has a nice fit and finish and works very well. It could be a little smaller, and I also hear that it''s good to cover so that dust doesn''t enter through the paper tray, drying the rollers and interfering with paper uptake. And sometimes it can be a little slow in faxing or printing very high quality photos. Don''t believe the number of pages per minute either, since that''s based on a page with only 5% filled. But those are not deal breakers if you use the machine for what it is intended -it''s not a machine to get if you expect to print a hundred color-saturated pages or photos a day -it''s a light-medium duty machine. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase. Hopefully it lasts as long as my last Brother fax of over 12 years -which is still going strong.

One last thing. Don''t underestimate the value to having separate ink cartridges like the Brother. Other companies like HP put all of the colors in one ink cartridge requiring that you buy the entire cartridge when one color runs dry. The Brother has 4 different cartridges assuring that you get your money''s worth from each. This is one of the dirty little secrets to color printers -they sell you the printer cheaply and then you pay through the nose for ink for the printer''s lifetime.

I had always thought that Brother manufactured good products over the years from what I had seen and heard, so I finally decided to give them a try. But this turned out to be a big mistake...

To begin with, what''s good about this machine is that the normal functions it was dsigned to do for you work fine. The machine prints, copies, scans, and faxes at an acceptable level. But the quality of the color when printing is not as good as compared with my $45.00 Epson C40UX printer that someone gave me as a gift.

The real problem with this machine lies in how fast it uses ink and the fact that it shuts down all functions whenever one of the four ink cartridges needs replacing.

I''ve had the machine for about 8 months now and at most I''ve printed maybe 100-150 pages with it. And all the pages have been 100% black ink only. Still, over this time I''ve had to replace the black ink and color ink cartridges two times since I purchased the machine. For some reason this machine goes through its color ink cartridges even when you''re printing only requires black ink. I basically use this machine for incoming faxes and occasional copies only, and during most weeks I don''t even print a single page with it.

In addition, when the machine indicates that you need to replace one of the ink cartridges, it stops all printing, copying, and fax functions until you replace that particular cartridge! So if people are faxing you something important, the fax will be quietly stored in the machine until you replace the ink cartridge. This is extremely disappointing that you aren''t given the option of printing out the fax if you''d like to before you replace the ink cartridge. Plus, you may be waiting for an important fax not even knowing that it''s already arrived because you see that no fax paper has been printed out from the machine.

Because of this and the fact that my Epson printer finally stopped working, a few days ago I upgraded to a HP Photosmart 2610 all-in-one, and so far it performs beautifully. But of course, the proof in how it really performs will come in the months ahead after I''ve had a chance to spend some more time with it.

But with respect to the Brother MFC-3820CN all-in-one, I really recommend that you look around and find a machine that doesn''t have the problems that I''ve just described to you. There are so many other machines on the market in the same price range that don''t have these same problems, and you''ll easily find a much more reliable machine that will also save you tons of money on replacing your ink cartridges.

I bought the mfc3820cn because I wanted a multi-function to use on a network and this one has a network connection built in. It worked out of the box. Software install was painless and I was printing / scanning / faxing / copying in a few minutes over my network. There are 4 separate ink cartridges which seem relatively cheap..... another factor which influenced my purchase.

The ink cartridges have no print heads. The heads are part of the machine. So the machine does periodic cleaning cycles. Thats OK, except that these cleaning cycles seem to start up at random, often in the middle of the night. It wakes the whole house up. Even turning the power button off, or disconnecting the network or USB cables doesn''t stop them. Theres apparently no way to stop them. I don''t know how, in designing a printer, that something like this could be missed. It doesn''t help that its quite a noisy printer anyway, much noisier than several Hewlett Packard printers I''ve owned.

The machine has a built in clock. A cleaning cycle could check the clock first and postpone the clean if its between certain hours. Brother tech support first suggested that I pull out the power plug at night. Not very practical for a fax machine.

If you intend having this machine at a business, then its probably fine, but if you intend having it in your home, then be warned, it will wake you up at night.

I purchased the Brother MFC-3820CN (...), my first one after 6 months died, after getting an ERROR 41 on its screen, the second one, well works, but its a pain to find ink thats cheap and it won''t work well with Compatibles, so don''t buy them, second, when you print out a picture, the picture quality stinks, everytime I printed out a picture after the first time, the pictures always had horizontal lines through it, It just stinks, I can''t believe I purchased it. DON"T BUY IT... By an EPSON OR OTHER KIND..be sure that you''ve tested the Picture Print quality so that you don''t get Lines through your pictures like I do with this one. The only thing good about it is that, you can make copies...and thats about it.

My brief observations seem to indicate that the MX850 really doesn''t improve upon the MP830 in some important areas.

I''ve owned the Canon MP830 for almost a year and and I just bought the Canon MX850 for a friend, so this is a direct user comparison. The 830 has been 100% reliable, producing excellent scans, prints, copies, and faxes. The MX850 is shorter in height, but otherwise just as bulky and heavy as the 830. Canon seems to be using a less robust scanner in the 850 than in the older MP830. Scans on the 830 are consistently over 4 times as fast: a 300 dpi 8.5x11" import scan into Photoshop CS3 took about 7 seconds with the 830 and about 33 seconds with the 850. The 830 wins in the noise category as well: it''s roughly 60% quieter than the 850 when scanning. The 850 produces an annoying high pitched tone while the 830 has more of a low "murmer" sound. The 850, to be fair, will not be considered to be overly loud for most environments. With scanning, the color reproduction seems fairly close between the two machines, though I''m getting more color accuracy from the 830. Copies on the 830 produced more accurate colors, too: a copy of a TIME magazine cover on a matt photo paper (with settings set to "Matt Photo Paper" and "High") yielded extremely accurate reproductions of the original, while the the 850 veered too far toward the yellow end of the spectrum. Both produced excellent detail, though. Scans of dot-screen images were well rendered with the 830, while the 850 exhibited substantial moire effects.

Not sure about energy consumption comparisons though the 850''s scanner seems to be using a more compact, (newer technology?) low lumens light-producing element than the very bright 830, so it probably uses less power.

Both machines will not disappoint, but with the advantage of my brief side-by-side comparison I''d recommend that you save $40 bucks and get the MP830. They both use the same ink cartridges. One last observation: the 850''s LCD screen has a much higher pixel count, but that''s only one small improvement amid the 830''s superior traits.

3/18/2008 Update: I''ve learned that the MX850 is using "contact image sensor" technology (CIS) where as the MP830 is using the more common "charged-coupled devices" (CCD) technology. For those with an interest in the tech aspects I''ve included some info I found online:

"Most of large format scanners in use today use CCD (charge-coupled devices) as the primary data capture element in their construction. Recently this position has started to be challenged by the lower cost CIS (contact image sensor) technologies, which have come mainly from the small flatbed scanner market. The traditional CCD or camera scanner is able to produce a very high number of colours from the scanned original and copes with folded documents reasonably well. These scanners tend to be preferred where the image to be scanned is either photographic or has extensive use of tones and shading. CIS scanners have the advantage in providing all the optics in a space of 20 mm or so, which in the CCD scanner equivalent would occupy more like 600 mm. The secondary advantage is that CIS scanners have no need for magnification, lenses or a rigid frame a major saving in construction costs and weight. However, CIS scanners do not do so well when scanning very pale colours or photographs."

This printer is an upgrade to my Canon Pixma iP6000. The iP6000 is excellent for printing photos as well as all daily stuff. I was concerned that a multi-function printer would not print photo''s as well. I was wrong!!!

This multi-function printer is as good, maybe even a little better at photos than the iP6000 was. I have only had it a couple of days, so I have not tried everything out yet. Regular print quality is excellent. Copying is great. Scanning should come out just as good as copying, but I''ve yet to try it. Photo printing is excellent.

If your looking at this just remember to consider its size. I don''t think it''s really any bigger than most other all-in-ones but it is bigger than my last printer.

I went with the MX850 for 2 reasons. (1) Networking capability and (2) Canon technology. I am very pleased with my decision!!

The set-up went without any problems at all. The first computer I hooked it up to is a desktop running XP home via USB. Installed perfectly.

Next was a laptop running Vista via network. NOTE: As instructed by the instructions you must attach the USB cable to the FIRST computer that is being installed on the network before you connect it via the network. After it is completely installed you no longer need that USB connection. It will connect via the network. Yes, my laptop is connected wirelessly. It works great!!! For any additional computers on the network all you have to do is install the software and connect it via the network. NO USB required for all additional network computers. The installation software is very easy to understand. There are only 3 install options. (1) Install to computer via dedicated USB connection. (2) Install FIRST computer on a network (must use USB this ONE time only). (3) Install additional computers on network. Thats it...

As I said it''s only been a couple of days so I have yet to try everything out, but so far NO disappointments. It seems to be a very well built simple to use machine. Software seems to be running fine on XP and Vista. Not sure where the pricing will go on this unit but, Amazon dropped their price $45 only a couple days after I ordered it. I was happy at full retail, but at $235 you can''t go wrong !!!

The one thing I do recommend is to use Canon photo paper when printing photos. I found that I got the best results this way. That was on the iP6000, but I''m sure the MX850 will be the same way.

It has been a few more days since original install.

During set-up on another computer on the network it would not install. I called tech support for help. The problem was my computer NOT the printer. Tech support was great!!!!!! They walked me through step by step checking everything till we found the problem. Canon has their support in the US and they have a dedicated department for networking. It was actually a pleasure calling them for help. Usually I hate to call for support. You never know where the call is being routed. Very nice to know you can get quick easy help if needed.

Also since I got a chance to play a little more with the printer I discovered how quick it is. I was happy with the iP6000 print speed, but the MX850 makes me realize how slow it was. I didn''t time it, but it printed a 4x6 photo very quickly!! Another nice feature is the door where the paper comes out will open automatically when you print.

So far no regrets!!! Don''t be afraid to call tech support if needed. They are great!

We ordered this printer last Saturday nite and amazon had it delivered on Tuesday afternoon with free super-saver delivery. Thank you amazon.

We are upgrading to this multi-function from a LexMark X6170, which served us quite well for 4 years. The Canon PIXMA MX850 is much heavier than the LexMark. If you''ve back problems, it might be worth asking the delivery guy to put it near to where you want it.

Although the packaging for the printer is quite simple, there are way too many plastic tapes to be removed. This is probably because there are many moving parts and sub-parts for this printer. Luckily Canon has included a simple instruction sheet for assmebling the printer and it does help if you follow it right.

NOTE: The packaging does not include a USB cable. We used the one from our old printer. The reason Canon does not include a USB cable is because this is a fully networked printer; that means all its functionalities can work over Ethernet. However, you do need the USB cable for initial setup.

Network setup is a 2 step process. For the first PC, you need to have a USB cable connection and then you can connect via Ethernet. Subsequent PC''s don''t need USB for network configuration. My printer and first PC are connected to a Netgear Wireless Ethernet bridge, which also connects to my WiFi LAN. My second PC is a laptop is which connected to my WiFi LAN. Canon has included a separate Users guide for network setup which really helps.

Print quality is quite good though not the same as a laser printer. Given that this printer supports dual side printing, using a good quality inkjet printing paper such as a 24lb, 115brightness will be worth it. There are 2 sources of paper feeds, a rear tray and a cassette. Both trays support all the same paper sizes, except for business cards which are available only on the rear tray. You can use either trays by pressing the "switch feed" button on the printer control panel or from their print software running on the PC. The print speed for one-sided printing is very fast, for both black and white as well as color printing. However, two-sided printing is quite slow. There is a noticeable pause between printing the two sides, and one would almost be tempted to pull the printout out of the output tray after printing one side.

As a photo printer, I think the quality is acceptable. I''vent used it for any scenic/outdoor photo''s. But it is ok for identity-card/passport photo''s, which you need in a jiffy and don''t consume too much ink. For other photo''s, you are better off using Costco or Walgreens anyways.

The MX850 supports dual sided scanning over the network. The Automatic Document Feeder(ADF) is supposed to hold 30-35 sheets, though it looks quite slim. The scan quality is good though not exceptional. Again dual sided scanning is much slower than single sided scanning, but with ADF you can move on to other tasks, while the MX850 goes about scanning. For multiple photo''s on the flatbed, it will create separate jpeg files. However, if you scan two set of documents with a time lag in between, they will be scanned to the same pdf. However, their print software does allow you to delete individual pages from the pdf, which is useful if not all pages in your original document set are two-sided. You can also re-arrange the pages if they are not in the order you want them to be in, using the Canon software.

The copying is the same as scanning followed by printing; so there is not much to write about it. I''vent tried FAXing yet.

On the whole, I''m very satisfied with the printer although it has just been a few days of usage. The printer has good features and their software is feature rich too. My only peeves about the MX850 are that it does not support Linux. Also, it has these ghostly/spooky movements and noises that it will do, probably because the print-head is being reset, even if it is sitting idle for some time. It also seems to vibrate noticeably while printing; though not so much as to topple a cup of coffee. A stable printer stand/table would be much recommended. Since the printer seems to be from the same family as MP830, I also expect to be quite generous in consuming ink.

All said and done, I would recommend this printer to anyone who is not a heavy user of print functionality. It will get small jobs done to more than your satisfaction.

I was initially going to buy an HP all-in-one (L7580, L7680, or C7280) to replace my HP OfficeJet G85, which would not scan with Vista. I was not comfortable with the HP customer reviews, though, as they confirmed some of my own doubts from seeing the products in stores. I kept looking and came across the new Canon MX850 and decided this was what I had been looking for. This product is worth the full list price, so Amazon''s discount and great shipping made it an even better value.

I set up the MX850 on my home network, which includes a Linksys Wireless G router, a Vista laptop, and an XP desktop. The setup worked perfectly the first time, and all functions work flawlessly from both PCs. You use a cable connection from the MX850 to the router, but this is not a problem for my setup. I did not have to call tech support, but it appears from other reviews that it is excellent, and in English.

Print speed is excellent, and the photo quality is also excellent. I printed some photos using the sample 4x6 paper that came with the printer, and they are as good as the same photos printed by the Kodak Gallery web site. I also like the included duplex (two-sided) printing, which is extra on many other products in this price range. The control panel is well designed and intuitive. The unit seems to be solid, durable, and well-constructed.

There a few minor points for improvements. First, the Canon takes a little more overhead time than the HP OfficeJet to clean or check the print heads or ink tanks, so sometimes you wait a short while before it actually starts to print. Second, when you set up your printing specs on your PC, the specs are not communicated to the MX850, so you have to set them up there as well. For example, if you''ve been printing on regular paper and now you want to print photos, you have to set the paper size, paper type (glossy, etc.), and print quality on your PC and then also set them on the MX850. Third, the standard print quality for text is not quite as dark black as the HP OfficeJet, but you only notice it if they are side by side. Last, the setup process adds a ton of software to your PC, including eight new desktop icons, two system tray icons, and five new Canon folders in the start menu. None of these are real problems, just observations.

Overall, I rate this as an excellent product for price, functionality, and construction. Buy it!

The Canon mx850 has some great features that very few printers have. I use the print and copy feature the most (actually I haven''t even used the fax or scanner yet) and I love the fact that I can do double sided copies. The copies have been suitable for me at this point, but I haven''t had to have a critical eye to judge them.

At first, I was pretty disappointed with the printing aspect of the mx850. The text looked like it came from a poor inkjet, even at a "high" quality setting. My old printer, the HP Photosmart 1115 (I had it for 5 years) definitely printed better text, which I found odd since it had 5 year old technology. I was finally able to figure out how to get crisp clean text and better quality photos (I''ve been trying to print my marketing materials such as brochure/rack cards). In the Printer Settings, if you click on Media Type: Photo Paper Pro and then click on Print Quality Custom and then ''Set'', set it to "1" being the highest. This made my rack cards look so much better than using any other media setting and quality setting. Actually, I went through each media type to see ifyou can set it at "1" quality, and I think the Photo Paper Pro was the only choice. Which means that Canon wants you to think that Photo Paper Pro is such a good quality paper that your prints look better, but really what''s going on is that the printer won''t print high quality prints unless you select that media type.

So, I was going to give it 3 stars until I found the ability to do that. I can''t judge the faxes and scanning aspects, but I won''t use those as much and I don''t have a high expectation of them. I just wanted a good printer and copier that can fax and scan.

I was a little worried about the paper curling issue at first, but having used this printer for a while, it is not as bad as some people make it out to be. Yes, the paper is curled slightly when it first comes out, but if you set it aside on a flat surface and let it cool for a few seconds, the paper will flatten out by itself. I have seen other laser printers that do far worse curling.

Network setup is very easy, especially if you''re using Mac OS X Tiger or Panther. I was able to connect both with Bonjour/Rendezvous wirelessly via Linksys 802.11g router after installing drivers downloaded off Brother''s website. Also was able to connect a PC running Win XP, which required an extra step or two. After you''re connected, if you need to change any default printer settings, it''s all done through a web interface (both FireFox and Safari worked fine).

Overall print quality is noticeably better than any inkjet and as good, if not better than similar laser printers in this class. Even graphic printouts were much better than I had expected and is perfectly fine for non-photo quality jobs. There are settings for 300/600/1200 dpi, a toner saver feature, power saver timeout, print density, and paper type selector (someone mentioned that selecting "thin" paper type causes less curling). Various other advanced printer and networking settings, and emulation modes exist also.

Print speed is very good. It takes about 10 seconds from the time I click the Print button to when 1 page in 600dpi with a fair amount of of text is printed out, even having just awakened from sleep mode. No problems printing out MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat documents.

I''ve printed a couple hundred pages so far, and have not experienced any printer errors or paper jams. (The printer also keeps a tally on the number of jams and an error history of the last 10 errors.)

Firmware version on mine is 1.11.

Overall, I would highly recommend this printer for anyone looking to save money on inkjet cartridges and want a very good quality, speedy, easy-to-setup, compact, networkable B&W laser printer for their home or home office.

This is a great way to let all the computers in your house share one printer. In my house I have 5... my PC, my wife''s PC, a laptop each, and a low-end DIY box I use for playing with Linux.

The installation of this printer was really easy. I plugged it into one of the wired ports on our wireless router and had all the PCs in the house printing to it within 10 minutes. I not only got our Windows machines using it in minutes, when I recently did a test install of Linspire on my DIY box, Linux printed to it with no problem too.

The output quality is great and it warms up pretty quickly. The only "bad" part is when I''m at my desk upstairs (where the printer is), my wife is downstairs with her laptop, and she prints something. Having the printer start up and print without warning was sort of spooky and took a little getting used to.

But all in all, this is awesome. One printer serves the whole house, gives great-looking output, and was a snap to get working.

This makes my third Brother laser printer that I have owned over the years. All three printers continue to be operational despite heavy workloads that I put on them in my small business. In fact, the only reason I bought the 2070N was because I wanted the convenience of the built-in networking capabilities. When it comes to quality, Brother shined above all the others and continues to do so.

The 2070N is a 20ppm monochrome (black and white) laser that can hook right up to your existing network. There is an optional wireless adapter you can purchase if you don''t have a cabled network. One of the things that impressed me the most was how easy it was to get setup and running on the network. I had used HP printers years ago that were ''network ready'' only to spend hours trying to figure out how to get the rest of the computers in the house to see it. With Brother, it was a matter of "plug and play". I took it out of the box, hooked it up and it automatically was assigned an IP address and the included software saw the printer and setup the necessary drivers. It doesn''t get any easier than that!

There are a lot of features built into this printer that you wouldn''t expect to find on a consumer model. For instance, the printer has a web interface that you can use to administer and check the status of the printer. There is also a built-in FTP server so you can literally FTP your large documents over to be printed. Errors and such can be setup to be e-mailed to you automatically so that, for example, when you are running low on toner you can get an email alert before you run totally dry.

The printer warms up faster and from sleep mode to print usually takes less than 10 seconds. Though some of the earlier 2070N models apparently had a problem with heat and curling paper, it appears that Brother has fixed this as I have never had my paper curl -even during large print jobs.

Overall, you can''t go wrong with the 2070N. It''s a low-cost workhorse that will serve you well for your print jobs in both your home and small business environment.

Ok, I read reviews here, then went out and bought, so i figured I would give back...

I bought this because of the cheap price, good looks, lack of a "stick out" paper tray, and the network connectivity. I read the paper curling problem, and figured it wouldnt bother me, but its a pretty big thing. it must produce allot of heat, because not only does it curl the paper, but it also fuzes envelopes shut, and completley melts the window in the window envelopes.

I not going to take this thing back, it does have great qualities, like you can use a browser to modify the network settings (like a dsl router), it looks great, the printing speed is very nice, and the fuser is a nice 60 bucks, oh, and the fit and finnish are much nicer than any of the hp1000 series I have worked with, and being a network adminstrator, i have worked with a bunch, its just the curling, melting, and sealing of envelopes.

I looked for a home laser printer to co-exist with my hp ink jet. The brother HL2070 had more ram than an HP 1022 I was considering and was lower priced. The toner / drum cartridges are also lower cost. When the printer arrived I noticed the quality of assembly was better than the HP 1022 I saw in the local stores. The driver set up was extremely easy. The print speed is quick. Small or full sized text is extremely good. I really like the multiple operating system support. I run Mac OSX and some Mac OS 9 software.

This is one of Epson''s budget home printers, but I am surprised at how many great features it has! The list includes wireless printing, scanning, copying, as well as an SD/memory card slot and a pop-up, LCD, touch screen front control panel.

Upon unboxing, you will see that this is a small printer. The dimensions closed are 15.25" wide x 5.50" tall x 12" deep. With paper loaded in the back and the paper tray extended in the front, the dimensions are 15.25" wide x 12" tall x 17.50" deep.

Be sure and take all of the packing tape and foam off and out of the printer before using. Epson suggests having a USB printer cable (NOT included) available for printer setup, even if you will be using this printer wirelessly. I have set up several Epson wireless printers and have never needed a USB cable. Here are the steps I use for an easy, trouble-free installation.

On your computer, go to Epson dot com and under support and drivers, enter XP-400 and download the combo software driver package. Even though a CD with the drivers comes included, they are invariably outdated so get the latest ones from Epson. While you are at it, bookmark (and later print) the full User''s Guide at Epson. It contains much more information than the printed Quick Guide that is included in the box.

While it is downloading, power on your printer. It will direct you to install the ink cartridges (included). Then, on the LCD touchscreen, select wifi setup. You will need to know the name of your wireless network (SSID) and the password, if any. Once this setup is complete, it will offer to print a wifi confirmation test page, so load some paper if you wish to do this.

Now go to your computer and install the software and drivers you just downloaded. When it asks, select "this printer is already connected to my wireless network" and continue with the installation. When it finishes, including any firmware upgrades, you''re ready to print! By the way, if there are several computers in your home, you must install the combo software drivers package on EVERY computer that wishes to print to this printer.

Note: if you print the initial test pages during installation, you will notice it is excruciatingly slow. Don''t worry after installation is complete, printing, scanning and copying is much speedier.

Text is crisp and clear and color printing is vibrant. You will get the best results using premium inkjet paper or premium photo paper, but text documents are quite acceptable on plain, old copy paper. Photos on photo paper are pretty darn good! Not photo lab quality, but you could certainly frame a print for your desk and not be unhappy with the quality.

Scanning in professional mode produces excellent scans! The Epson scanning software offers many options to suit your needs and is relatively easy to figure out even without reading the user''s manual.

The SD/memory card slot on the front of the printer lets you print without even turning on your computer! You can even print a preview sheet of all the photos on the SD card from your digital camera.

A nice surprise is that this printer features Air Print, Epson Connect and Google cloud printing! Air Print means that for me, I can print from my iPhone, iPad or iPod without any additional setup! Epson connect lets you print remotely from anywhere you are. Google cloud printing lets android users print wirelessly from their phones and other devices and even lets you share your printer with others.

I''m very surprised at how many features this printer has. Because it''s a budget printer, there is no paper tray and it doesn''t have fax capabilities and it''s not as speedy as the Epson WorkForce line. But I can definitely recommend it for home use at a very affordable price.

Just bought this from Staples for $69.99. I was going for the Canon MX410 or MG4120; however, we bought it over these even though it was $10 more mainly because of the size (much smaller and space saving) and the multi-ink cartridges (4 Black, Yellow, Blue, and Red). The cartridges will only cost $8.99 each for the colored ones and $12.99 for the black ink. One reason I chose this printer is to minimize the cost on the ink. I will have to do some more research on buying ink at a greater discount (i.e., Office Depot store brand). The test quality of the copy of the Staples weekly advertisement done at the store was excellent.

We are going to use this printer for general document printouts at the house (i.e., will not use to print 4 x 6 pictures) and to make copies. The set-up took me about 25 mins. since I had to clean the area where the old HP printer was and took my time reading the instructions. You could probably do it in 10 mins. It took no time to set-up the printer on my wife''s MacBook Pro. I was looking forward to printing from my phone (Motorola Droid RARZ using MOTOPRINT) and it took less than 30 secs. to add the printer and print a PDF document I had previously viewed. It printed within a minute. Please note that I did not have to download any other apps to do this. I will try printing a test page away from the house (i.e., when I am at the store or work to see if it can be done). I then printed a page from Yahoo! on my wife''s iPhone and it started printing in less than 10 secs. and both pages were done printing in 15 secs. or so. I then set-up the WiFi on the printer itself by adding the password and it was really quick.

In conclusion, and although I have had the printer for less than 1 hour, I am very satisfied with my purchase and don''t regret it. I''ve always owned multiple Canon printers and my wife owned an HP. I will update my review in a month or so after more usage.

My husband would be the first to tell you I''m not a techie. But I found this printer to be painless to install and a real joy to use.

1) Before we discuss the actual device, I first want to praise the packaging of all things. Frankly, I was shocked at how small the box was when the printer came in the mail. This is a model of how printers ought to be packaged.

2) The quick installation sheet that came with the printer was easy to understand and follow. Like I said, painless. The one caveat here is that I just updated to OSX Mountain Lion, and the installer that came on the enclosed CD said it was incompatible with my operating system. I knew that the next thing to do was to go to Epson''s web site and download an updated, Mountain Lion-friendly driver, and sure enough, Epson''s website almost intuited that this was what I was looking for. I only wish, for the sake of others perhaps less experienced in this sort of thing, that Epson had taken the time to add "Please visit our website for appropriate installation software" or something to that effect to the "incompatible with your system" dialog on the original install program.

3) The LED control panel is incredible. It''s easy to read and very easy to use, even with just four arrows and an "OK" key. Really that''s all you need. The fact that I could actually key in my lower-case wireless router password is a big plus over the last wireless printer I installed and I mean BIG PLUS.

4) Oh and this printer also has an SD slot for printing photos straight off memory media, again unlike the last wireless printer I installed.

5) The printer works really well with OSX''s built-in Image Capture program, which is smart on Epson''s part as other printer manufacturers would just have tried to craft their own substitute which would not have been nearly as good. Why reinvent wheels unnecessarily?

6) My only real gripe with this device (other than the fact that I had to figure out on my own to download my installation software directly from Epson and which I don''t think is really a gripe given how recently Mountain Lion was released) is that it doesn''t have a document feeder for the copier / scanner as far as I can tell. This has the potential to be a real nuisance for anyone who needs to copy or scan more than three pages at a time. In my case, however, I can just use my other wireless printer which does have a document feeder for its copier / scanner, but I''m under no real illusions that most people have spare copiers lying around at home.

But, as I said, this is a great buy for its price point, and recommended.

I''ve been using the cheaper Canon PIXMA MG3120 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One (5289B019) which I bought at Walmart on sale. This one compared to the Canon, although they have the same features seemed to be the better buy from my using experience so far.

It was easy to set it up my my MacBook Pro using the wireless features. No problems at all. I am using Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and set up was a breeze. My Canon although I''ve set it up numerous times, my computers still has issues connecting and printing to it. This one I had no problems connecting to all 3 computers, 2 Macs and 1 Windows 7. The ink is also much cheaper than the Canon. The initial ink that is sent with the computer I''m not sure how long it will last but I''ve done quite a bit of printing and it''s still going. There is 4 ink cartridges to be replaced when it''s time to replace them, but the Canon prints a lot better in my opinion when it does connect.

I still gave it 3 stars because of the stability of the product. It seems cheaply made, that if any pressure is placed on anything it will break easily so you have to be careful. The touch pad feels the same way as well. There is also no bottom tray feeder so all paper has to be top loaded. The printer quality is also not top notch but is perfect for the kids school reports etc. Picture quality isn''t that great either so you may want to continue paying to get your pictures printed somewhere else. Scanning and copying is a breeze.

Edit: I must mention that it does not have automatic duplex printing. You''ll have to do it manually.

Wish I could have given it at least 4 stars but for the price I expected something better built.

Having read the reviews, I was worried about the duplexer. I called HP and was generally reassured so I bit the bullet and ordered the machine. So far I am very impressed: setup was a breeze, print quality is as expected, and the duplexer works great. I am printing 70 page double sided documents, small volume (maybe 700 pp month) and so far the printer has worked without a hitch.

I like the output from it and the networking is very nice, but the back side of prints are offset about .5 inches from the front side. HP''s support was very bad (although they did send me a new duplexer eventually which still did not solve my problem). After awhile I gave up on trying to get it fixed. All and all I wish I had purchased something else because duplexing is the only reason I got this printer. For someone who does not care that much about the duplexing option, I am sure it would be fine though.

I bought this printer because I do a lot of 11" x 17" printing. It serves that function well, although as other have reported the duplex unit does not function well (paper jams). The duplex unit works well on legal size. Printing in the "fast normal" and "draft" modes is fast, partially because each new sheet is fed immediately after the previous, so there is no gap in time from printing one sheet to the next. Printing of Letter size in "draft" mode is startingly fast when compared to other ink jets. Ink is easy to replace and the reservoirs are big in the model 10 and 11 cartridges. I previously used an HP 9800 and this is a dream comparitively becasue the ink lasts so much longer and each color can be replaced uniquely rather than the tricolor cartidges of the 9800. I am happy with my 850dn choice and would buy it again. I wish I would have bought the 850 the first time rather than the less expensive 9800.

This is a great printer. We are an architecture firm, and purchased it because it handles 12x18 paper (for half-sized drawings to scale). This printer has proven to be extraordinary at handling the marketing materials, permitting us to print on heavy weight cardstock through the rear flat feed option. Also, when you need to shoot out a 100 page document in a hurry, set this on the fast normal setting, and it simply flies through the job (the draft setting, while still faster, actually shoots the paper onto the floor). We analyzed the per sheet cost, and it works out to less than 3 cents a sheet for the color ink (presentation type) stuff we do, which is competitive. I really do wish I could get a larger paper tray or additional paper trays for the printer though.

I do agree with the other reviewer about the duplexing it really isn''t reliable, but I have yet to find an inkjet that handles duplexing well. While I wish we could save more trees, we just print single side for now.

This is the second Brother multi-function printer I have owned. The old one worked perfectly for several years.

When I found out that Brother was offering this new MF Printer with 11 x 17 output capability I was tempted to buy one because I frequently print/fax/copy floorplan drawings. Then when I found out that it was less than $300 on Amazon I purchased one immediately and gave my old MF Printer to a friend.

I have not been disappointed. It was easy to set up and working in a matter of minutes. The warm up cycle at the beginning of a print job is a little slow, but fairly typical for this type of machine. I haven''t found any complaints with it. The ability to print/fax/copy/receive 11 x 17 drawings is awesome.

I fully expected that the downside to this printer would be the cost of the ink cartridges. Wrong again! Replacement Ink cartridges, in both black and color, were relatively cheap and available in XL and XXL capacities.

One last thing. This is not a photo printer. Color printing is sharp and acceptable for most business applications, but don''t expect to print photos.

This is a great, inexpensive business printer. I have been using it daily for about 6 weeks without so much as a hiccup. I highly recommed it.

I bought this because I need to be able to produce color 11x17 drawings for my land surveying business. It was recommended by another surveyor. Even thought it''s slower than my copies or a laser printer, it''s very useful as a home backup. I also needed the scanning capabilities. I usually print out the survey and then sign it, then scan to PDF for delivery to my clients. It works great for that.

For a long time, I was dead set on getting a laser MFC (probably monochrome; can''t afford the color lasers and I rarely need color prints, although it is nice to distinguish hyperlinks and print web pages on rare occasions) to replace my old HP Photosmart C4280 printer/copier/scanner, which worked great but just couldn''t ever meet the level of performance that I need. I frequently scan or copy documents in 9x12" or 11x17" sizes (rarely larger, but it''s happened), which is impossible on my old machine; I also print out long documents (sometimes up to around 50pgs) in duplex regularly, which took forever and required me to feed each sheet through one at a time or spend time making sure I had them all oriented correctly and in the right order after I printed the odd pages on the first side.

The Brother MFC-J6910DW caught my eye because it, unlike all laser printers under the thousands of dollars, could scan/copy/print up to 11x17. Most only allow up to legal size, which is no more useful to me than 8.5x11. This machine makes my life so much easier with this ability, combined with the automatic duplex printing function as well as duplex scanning through the ADF. I was also pleasantly surprised by the relatively low ink cartridge cost per page it''s actually getting down into the realm of laser toner costs, which is MUCH better than the typical inkjet.

After owning the printer for a little over a week now, I can say it''s quite a pleasure to have. Set-up, including connecting to my home ethernet network, was a snap, and as soon as the drivers were installed on my computer from the included CD, I was able to do everything I needed to right from the start with a very short learning curve. Being an individual but with somewhat business-like printing needs, the overall cost-to-own on this Brother printer, its ease of use, and overall excellent functionality with outstanding features make this an excellent purchase.

This is the 3rd printer I have since I upgraded to MAC OS 10.7 LION. I had a HP 309 that worked fine with my MAC until I upgraded. Then I bought a KODAK multi-function printer that kept loosing connection with the network. Now I have this Brother MFCJ6910DW.

First the printer:

Machine is build very well. I love the 2 paper trays and the capability to print , scan and copy double sided 11" x 17". Physical setup was easy. I had the printer out of the box and the trays and cartridges installed in under 30 minutes.

Installing software was a different story. I''m a MAC user (LION 10.7). It took 2 installs and about 2 Hrs. to get the printer to "talk" wirelessly over my home network. Then I was able to print. But that''s it.

I called Bother Tech Support. They have a special group that addresses MAC problems. Unlike the regular phone support, they have limited operating hours. I think it''s 10:00 AM -8:00 PM EST. Once I got someone on the phone (Next day) a very nice and knowledgeable employee had the scanner function running in no-time. I can scan from the PC or directly from the printer to the PC. The text recognition is working as well. Installing it all was quite complex. I miss the days that you can plug just about any device into your Macintosh without having to load a driver.........................Hopefully Apple will come with a driver for this printer soon.

I appears to me that the "Scan to network" and "Scan to FTP" functions are not working for MAC LION 10.7. I have also not been able to make the scan to email function work with my Google account. I called the help desk again but the employee that (tried) to help me this time didn''t get me anywhere.

I have not used the FAX function at all.

The Brother website could use some improvement. It takes a while to find the correct documentation. Why not have a setup guide for each operating system???? One page that tells you step by step what to do........

Once I have some more "fun" with this machine I will update my review.

UPDATE:

Installed on my 2nd MAC OS 10.7. Went smooth this time. Here are the steps it took.

1) Do not use CD rom (yet)

2) download and install driver form Brother website:

3) Restart your MAC.

4) Add the printer in Systems Preferences, Print and Scan.

5) Printer should now show up in your list.

6) Print a test page to make sure it works.

7) Now download and install the Scan Driver from the Brother website:

8) It should open a window (Device Selector) to setup your computer name to scan to.

9) Check the box "Register your computer........." and give your computer a name to be displayed on the Brother display.

10) You should be able to scan now.

11) Now insert the Brother CD that came with your printer.

12) Open the Brother Support App and download and install Presto Pagemanager. This installs the OCR (Text recognition software)

13) Open the Brother Control Center (there should be a small icon in the top of your screen) and scan a document using OCR

14) Enjoy.

This printer is much better than the one it replaced (the Epson 2200) in that it doesn''t give weird color tones for black and white prints. The black and white prints out of the Epson r2400 are wonderfully neutral, plus there are options for warm, cool and sepia toning that all look great.

The color output is also tops. Although this printer is more optimized to print on matte papers, it can print both color and black and white perfectly fine on glossy papers (if you swap in the photo black ink instead of the matte black) and in fact, to my eye even on glossy paper, the prints look better than the photo lab! And on matte paper (my preference), the prints are pure fine art-just lovely.

As a professional photographer, I''m concerned about the archivability/lastibility of prints. Epson has this covered with the Ultrachrome K3 inks that the r2400 uses. Prints are rated to last approximately 200 years. I''m sure my clients will approve.

The ink cartrdiges seem to print out for a surprisingly large number of pages, certainly no worse than the previous model Epson. And since there are 8 different color cartridges, at least you only have to replace the one that is low, not all of them at once.

In terms of price, it does seem a bit expensive, but consider that the next larger printer, the Epson 4800 model is over $1,000. more and it uses the same archival Ultrachrome K3 inks (just in bigger cartridges). With the 4800 you pretty much only gain being able to print 16x20 prints-it prints up to 17" wide whereas the r2400 prints up to 13" wide. The 4800 also has larger and more expensive ink cartridges and when you swap out the photo black (glossy) ink for the matte black ink, you have to waste about $100. worth of ink. When you do the same process on the r2400, you waste only about $10. worth of ink because it doesn''t have to purge as much ink out of the system.

The r2400 seems like a real bargain next to the next higher model.

With both output and lastibility that rival the photo lab, this printer is a no brainer. Buy it and take the control of how your prints look away from the lab, and put it back in your own hands.

As per the reviews on other sites, this printer works like a charm providing excellent quality on both glossy and matte media. Rather than prolong that discussion, I would like to compare it to the printer it is replacing, my five year old Epson 1270. In terms of image quality, I do not see much difference in color pictures, perhaps more detail in shadow areas. Not quite the wow I was expecting. But then wow would have been difficult since my 1270 produced excellent color prints. Rather I see two improvements: (1) Superior B&W, and (2) really good profiles. In addition, the prints should last my lifetime. Unlike another reviewer, the printer software installed easily with no problems.

The major problem is ink useage. To switch between glossy and matte media you have to change the black ink cartridge. The whole system seems to go through a purge resulting in the wasting a lot of precious ink. At over $14.00 a pop per cartridge, the care and feeding of this thing could be quite expensive.

Summary:

I had been using the Epson 2200 for about a year, and it has given me great prints and reliablity. The only drawbacks were it''s print speed and it''s use of only two black inks which made printing in b&w less than ideal, but still acceptable.

Well, here comes the 2400 to finally replace the old industry workhorse. It sits in the same tight spot on my desk as the 2200, so the footprint is close to the same, however the 2400 looks to be a bit taller. The machine is a rugged looking, handsome unit, silver and black in color. It has a new paper catch tray that slides out with the touch of a finger similiar to a giant CD player tray. This new unit does not come with the paper cutter and fabric paper catch bin that the 2200 shipped with. I never used those accessories and found most people did not, and so I guess Epson figured it was not worht equipping with any longer.

After firing it up and using it now for a couple of months, I can say that this latest entry into the world of fine art printing is everything it should and needed to be to improve upon the already great 2200. Everything from the software , hardware, and inkset has been improved upon.

First off, and most importantly, the inkset has improved by the addition of a third black ink called "light, light black. ( thus giving the name of the inkset K3) What this does is allows the printer to reproduce the nuetral grays without having to use color inks to do so. This virtually eliminates metermerism, which is the shifting of color tints when viewing a print under different light sources. The b&w prints take on a nuetral tone and resemble traditional b&w prints. And in addition to this third black ink it seems Epson has improved the dmax of the black set. The black from the 2400 is noticeably deeper than that of the 2200, and i can only guess that Epson has added some more dye to the black ink ( Dye ink obtains deeper dmax than pigment) as black ink is less vulnerable to fading and therefore will not hurt the archival abilities that the Epson pigment inksets are so famous for.

Secondly, the hardware has been improved upon in many ways. The 2400 printer is almost twice as fast as the older 2200, and I have printed full 12x18 at highest resolution in about 6 minutes. A 5x7 or 4x6 in under a minute. And very quiet at that. The resolution of this printer has been brought up to an astouding 5760x1440 dpi. However, it is almost impossible it seems for the human eye to tell the difference between 2880 and 5760 dpi. But more is more, and who should complain. Next, the printer now has three paper paths. I print quite often on heavy fine art paper and with the 2200 I had to feed it through a straight paper path at the rear of the printer, which was a bit awkward to do. The 2400 allows you to feed heavy art paper through the top like a regular sheet, except it uses a different path located just behind the normal, or sheet path, as Epson calls it. Also is the ability to now print on heavy board type media, which I do not think i will ever use, but the option is there. It feeds through a feed path at the very front of the machine which is revealed by opening a cover at the front. The media feeds in through the front and the printer prints it in reverse sending it out the rear. Quite convenient and versatile.

Finally, there is the improved software. Similiar to the older software is the user-friendly look and set-up as well as all the options for paper sizes and printing enhancements and features. It seems Epson is very aware and ok with the fact that many users of the 2200 liked using different media from different manufacturers, even though Epson offers a wide variety of quality papers. I myself, have found the line of Moab papers, especially the Entrada fine art and the Kayenta matte, to be what I prefer to use. After much experimenting I have found these papers to produce excellent results with Epson inks and they are acid and lignin free as well. However, the Kayenta matte, which is not a heavy fine art paper and therefore should feed through the sheet path, uses the "Watercolor-Radiant white" epson paper setting for best results. however, Epsons "Watercolor-Radiant white" paper is a heavy stock and needs to go through the heavy paper path. When I set the software for "Watercolor-Radiant white" Epson software tells me that I am using the wrong path. however, it gives me the option to ignore the warning. This is great because what that tells me is Epson is aware that we will be using third party papers at times and they require different settings than what Epson suggests for their own and thus allows it''s software settings to be side-stepped. Big thumbs up for them on that note alone.

Next is their b&w printing option in the software. I had truly underestimated this feature as I like to do evrything as far as editing in my PhotoShop software and do not touch a photo in any other way. I convert to b&w,ready my image and then send to the printer to print as it is, with the appropriate profile for the paper I use. Well, b&w prints look very good this way, but I soon found out that by using the b&w setting on my already converted b&w images , I get far beter results. It seems to be that this is a sort of built in RIP software which actually throws down a different combination of inks when using the b&w mode. It also enables one to easliy adjust the tonal range and to tint a b&w photo to give warmer or cooler, and of course, nuetral tonal quality I have printed the same b&w image in both ways and the b&w mode setting in the software gave me very noticeable benefits.And lastly, the bronzing condition when making glossy prints on the older 2200 has been tackled by an adjustment that can be made before printing which eliminates any pure white areas and covers them with a fine light gray ( I would guess) which supposedly greatly reduces the effect. Bronzing is when you would look at a glossy print from a side angle and it would seem to shimmer or glisten like a holographic effect. I have not tried a glossy print yet, as i print almost exclusively on matte and fine art paper so I cannot confirm this situation has been remedied. As for reliability, I cannot give any opinions as I have only owned this machine a few months, but

I can say the 2200 never gave me a single problem and I never even found the need to run any of the maintenance utilities. I would be willing to bet that this machine will fare very good in that respect as Epson has proven to be the best in the business, and for good reason. Ink consumption actually seems to be a little better, but I''m guessing this is because of the additional ink cartridge putting less of a drain on some of the other colors. I would guess overall it comes out to be the same as the 2200 in the end. So there you have it. I''m sure there are other additional benefits and improvements that I have not uncovered yet, but I am enjoying this remarkable machine and am always eager to print on it.

I needed to upgrade my Epson 1270 at some point, and I almost went for R1800, but didn''t like the fact that you could not use heavier media in R1800. Then I found R2400 was going to be released and around the same time, a gallery asked me to hang a show of some of my photojournalism. I needed to produce around 40 11x14 prints suitable to hang on short notice. I ordered Gretag MacBeth Eye One Match and R2400. Hardware setup easy; it is a large printer and you''ll need a stable location for it. Cables come with it so you don''t need to buy a set. Software setup should have been easy, but in my haste I made simple mistake and prolonged software install. Check online for updates. Ink install was very easy as well. (The printer software walks you through ink changes when a cartridge runs dry). Once I fixed problem, I tweaked an image for output in Photoshop CS2, and color management is ridiculously easy with CS2 (and if you''re a photographer and you don''t have Scott Kelby''s book, you''re missing the boat). I used Enhanced Matte and selected "Best" setting for a 65 mb 300 dpi file. The printer hummed to life and started churning out a print and shaking my somewhat flimsy printer stand. Wow, I thought it was the Loma Prieta Quake Redux. I reduced shaking with foam under printer feet. First print out looked good, but a little underexposed. But there was fine detail in shadow and highlights weren''t blown out and colors were astonishing. A little tweak in Photoshop, and 2nd print was perfect, and went into box for gallery show. In one week, I printed about 75 prints approx 10x12 on 11x14 paper and used only 7 cartridges. And about 45 test prints at 5x7 inch. I still have plenty more ink left. The ink indicator is fairly accurate, and it tells you exactly how many more prints of whatever size you''re printing you can do. Using a Logan Compact Mat Cutter, and a stack of 16x20 4 ply mat board from Redimat in Novato, CA, I put together a gallery show in TWO WEEKS.

I can''t wait to try black and white. I would also recommend trying other papers the Epson Enhanced Matte is very, very good, but you might find something else that will give your images that extra edge. This printer is truly worth it. Take the time to calibrate your monitor. Oh, and shoot in RAW if your camera has it.

I bought an Epson R2400 from Amazon a week before Christmas during a brief sale for a total of $749.00, including 3 day shipping. The outer and product box were a little beat up, but the printer was intact. It works well.

I loaded the Matte ink and have dedicated the printer to producing B&W images on matte papers from scanned 4x5 B&W (and larger) negatives--for the time being. Results are very good. It won''t turn a badly taken, developed and scanned negative into a great picture, but if one is using a negative able to produce a good B&W print the old chemical way, the printer will give you very pleasing inkjet print results.

I haven''t run it through very many of all possible functions. I will just comment on some of the refinements of the R2400 over the Epson 2200 (which I also have and intend to keep, as it works reliably and so well for color reproduction of original art work). The R2400 has a tighter dpi pattern--the resolution has grown from the 2200''s 2880 dpi to 5760 dpi (in one direction--it remains 1440 for both printers in the other direction).

Anyone familar with old silver-based papers knows that inspection of a photographic print with a lupe can show astounding detail even as the image vanishes into the silver grain pattern--something inkjet reproduction cannot duplicate. However, using an 8x power lupe, I simply cannot see any obvious inkjet dots in large, finished B&W prints on 13x19 Epson velvet paper printed with the R2400. Also, the degree of fuzziness of the image on velvet paper at 8 power is only slightly more than in the digital image seen on my Apple Cinema display. It seems the paper resolution has increased dramatically over results from the Epson 2200 (where 8x inspection of prints shows the image demolished in noticable dots). So, the R2400 produces prints that appear wonderfully sharp with the naked eye.

Another surprise is that my 20" Apple Cinema''s LSD image provides a near dead-on means of determining the appearance of the print on velvet paper. For printing color on my Epson 2200, it is necessary to use a CRT monitor and still make guesses based on experience. The Epson R2400''s functions all work on Apple OSX 10.3 using a G5 2.5 gHZ Powermac.

The R2400''s paper loading is more sophisticated than on the Epson 2200. Heavier Epson papers can be loaded into a second steeply tilted single paper loader--not needing be fed in straight and level as in the 2200. Other brands of heavy matte papers must be fed straight in, but through the front. In all cases, whether using the single sheet loader or the front end loading, the printer eventually grabs the paper and positions it prior to printing.

Nice printer. Gives me reason now to start loading my old cut film holders again and hauling big camera''s around without the need of launching whole hog into a chemical darkroom other than what is necessary to just develop film.

Purchased this from a local big box store, because Amazon was still selling at list price and there was only one product review. Have used the printer for 3 days now and come to the following conclusions: fast printing, good auto document feeder, good paper handling, good scanning, and easy set up! What''s not to like?

1) printing print quality is very good, and perfect for home school use. This includes photos, and two sided printing.

2) scanning set up to scan wirelessly to 3 different Macs. Scanning of photos, documents worked well. Was able to initiate scans from the printer touch screen and the computer. Worked with both the Flatbed and ADF. We don''t have any specific quality requirements, but output was great for our use.

3) copying copying is fast and quality is good. Copied single sided to single sided and single sided to double sided using ADF. Copying was fast and flawless. Lid is hinged so that it lifts up over thicker items and can handle books of an inch thickness with no problem.

4) set up set up for use on 3 Macs (2 are 10.6.8, and one is 10.7.5). Set up was easy. I didn''t use the disc that came with it, just downloaded from Epson. Wireless network set up was simple and straightforward.

5) AirPrint if you have iPhones and iPads, AirPrint works great with zero set up!

6) no faxing here, so I have no comments on that.

Before i found the 3540, I was hesitating on buying the Work Force 845 for a couple of reasons: 1) the model was a year old, and 2) issues with handling thick paper. Well, the 3540 model is new and in my tests, it handled photo paper through the rear slot and paper tray with no issues.

I whole heatedly recommend this printer.

To those who are looking for ink usage, I''m afraid I''m not very scientific on that front. We home school 2 children (8th and 10th grades) and this is the primary printer / copier. In other words, it gets a lot of use. My thoughts on ink usage are: better than the HP it replaced (an older Officejet 5500), better than the Canon we use mostly for photo''s (iP6600D), but not quite as good as my Brother MFC-J6710DW. BUT, the print quality on the Epson is much better than on the Brother.

Having said all that, my qualitative assessment is that the ink usage is pretty good. We have gone through one black and two color cartridges. The printer reports having printed:

223 color pages

446 b/w pages

Unfortunately, I can''t tell you what the counts were when cartridges were replaced.

A recent review at PC World (), has the ink costs as a little above average. The comments from PC World:

"Ink costs for the WorkForce WF-3540 are decent, if you opt for the extra high-capacity (large) cartridges: 3.2 cents per page (cpp) for black and 2.7 cpp per color, or 11.3 cents per four-color page."

March 19th, 2013 Long story short, I hate modern day printing. Doesn''t seem to matter if you buy inkjet or laserjet, there are almost no decent printers on the market today which can print reliably for under $200 and do not use the silly f#$%@#! microchip ink cartridges or laserjet toner cartridges. In the ole days, printers were heavy as hell and didnt print fast, but they didnt break down often either, and ink was dirt cheap. (When ink costs more than blood banks charge for human blood plasma, you know your taking it in the butt :)

The current business model for most printer companies (Epson, Canon, Brother, Lexmark, etc..) is to roll out unfinished, a super duper technological wizard of a printer which unfortunately is fragile as hell, and for whom only three out of ten software/firmware functions actually work on release day. You are left with a half-baked printer that works occasionally if you sacrifice a goat during a solar eclipse. And, even if you do manage to get the thing to work, you will need to mortgage the house to pay for the ink (you didn''t think the microchips on each ink cartridge were there to improve printing resolution did you?). Since pigment based printer ink is sold for $9 per gallon (about 3.7 liters) in Sri Lanka, you can be pretty sure it does not cost $15 for one tiny single color cartridge in first world countries. The only real way out of this mess to start spending in the $1000 range or higher for a real office printer that is built to withstand heavier duty use.

In the past ten years, I have owned four other printers before this; a heavy ole Lexmark that smelled bad and was slow, but never failed until my wife spilled her coffee in it (or I would still have it with a smile on my face). An older Brother machine that mysteriously died on me (it was not bad either) and two Canon MultiPass/Pixma pieces of s$@!. In particular, the Canon ink was outrageous in price and I was always going to third party ink suppliers to save money. I love Canon high end cameras, but their lower price printers have always failed me.

So after my latest Canon MP 830 stopped working (to be fair, it never worked that well on its best day), a frown formed on my face as I knew I would have to spend time researching another super crapper to take its place. Fortunately, Amazon shows real reviews from people who actually purchased the products (I will address the Vine program in a moment) they are reviewing. Out of all the lower cost printers, one Brother monochrome laser jet and the Epson 845 Workforce stood out, when only real reviews were counted. I need the ability to print in color from time to time plus scanning so the 845 spiked my interest. Checking the Epson website, I saw the WF 3540 which is the 845 rebuilt for 2012. So with some trepidation, I ordered it from Amazon.

It came and I began setting it up. With its rounded edges and black facade, it sure looks nice, was a first impression. For myself, I run Windows 7 from two computers and Debian/Mint/Ubuntu on the other three. I set it up in Windows 7 first and it printed fine, copied fine, scanned fine and the Wi-Fi worked fine. Step one okay so far, and further than Canon ever made it. Next I printed from Ubuntu and Debian and that worked fine. Great. Then the tricky part of getting wi-fi working with my Mint laptop. Even that worked fine. So far so good (and more than I expected).

I then tested out some of the Epson software features like WebPrint, Epson Connect, Event Manager and Download Manager, and they all worked as promised. (from Windows 7). Unfortunately, these software programs are not available for Linux users, but I knew this from reading the product details. I did not test for Apple OSs because I only use those at work. Got to say, aside from the few Linux lapses, I was fairly surprised by this point. The iPrint software did work fine from my Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone. (Did not test the Apple AirPrint option) Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I tested Google Cloud Print, and it works just fine. You can also sync the software to Google Drive (online cloud storage).

I will say the ink prices look like they will be middle of the road. Certainly not the high prices of Canon or Dell, but not dirt cheap. This Epson 3540 has four ink tanks for standard Epson pigment based ink (not dye based), and the ability to install ultra high capacity tanks as well. A check at third party vendors also shows generic ink available at cheaper prices as well. I will just be happy if I have a refill once every six months to one year. With Canon, thanks to their firmware coding, all tanks were used even for grayscale printing, resulting in expensive ink purchases and a loud tirade every three months or so. With this Epson 3540, when you check the tab under printer properties for grayscale printing, the Epson WF 3540 does indeed print only from the black tank. Thank you Epson for not shafting me.

Since the initial setup, it has been about four months, and so far everything is working well. My only minor problem has been that when I wish to print on 4x6" inch photo paper, the roller does not grab the paper sometimes (but all other paper sizes are grabbed fine did not try envelopes). I also find the photo reproduction quality to be just fine, but I am not a photography specialist. If you are really in to high quality photo printing you may want a seven ink tank printer. Most cheaper printers work well for the first few months and then start failing, so I will update this review at the one month, three month, six month, one year and three years marks (if it lasts that long). I never give an initial computer product a five star review, so I will wait and see how it continues to function. The fifth star can only be earned by durability over the long haul. My relation with printers over the last ten years has been miserable, so hopefully, this Epson WF 3540 will be the start of a better relationship.

As to the one star reviews for this printer, reading install directions and setting up drivers is paramount, especially if you want wireless printing to work. This printer does work very well indeed, but you must be meticulous in setting up the drivers correctly to receive their fully functionality. Some people have complex work environments with Windows, Mac and Linux computers all in the same home or office. For them, setting up the printer in the correct order (printer driver first, then hardware USB cable, etc..) is critical. Obviously, if you dont do this, you are likely to run into wireless problems, especially in a mixed OS environment. With Windows 7, you must head to control panel -> network and sharing center -> change advanced sharing settings, and then make sure that network discovery, file sharing and printer sharing are turned on, and that your home network (and ideally, homegroup) are set up correctly. If not, your wireless laptop is not going to see the Epson WF 3540 (whether it is stand alone or connected to your desktop by USB cable). There is also a correct install order to the print drivers and if you install the Epson Connect after the main lump driver package, it will over write the previous registry values in the kernel and you will have to redo the Wi-Fi setup wizard on the printer touchscreen (no biggie, but this stumps many buyers I suspect). (this is true for Windows and OS X 10 and Mountain Lion). Many of the problems people complain of, are with Windows XP, but come on guys, the kernel for XP was written in 1999. It is like asking your 1999 Chevy Cavalier to perfectly mesh with Onstar Live.

One positive and negative about the WF 3540 is the software suite. The good news is that each program actually does a needed function and is coded correctly, and works in Windows 7 64 bit. The bad news is that the total software suite is very large (almost 750 MB installed) and you are left with about twelve entries under My Programs. You can choose which ones to install thankfully and several (like Epson WebPrint, Epson Connect, the Fax stuff and the online stuff) are not really essential if your main mission is just printing, copying and scanning.

As to the Amazon Vine Program Cancel it Amazon admins, .... please. As any idiot in Congress knows firsthand, receiving donations to your campaign from health care companies makes fair impartial judgement on a health care bill almost impossible. The same is true for sending select semi-pro reviewers free printers (or any other products). It is pretty hard to give a printer a one star review if you received it for free. This Epson WF-3540 page is filled with Amazon Vine Program reviews all of which are questionable from the start. Rarely do I see Amazon make a misstep, but this would be one. Reconsider the Vine Program please.

Finally, about one out of every 17 people rate this review as not helpful, which has me curious. Interested to see what people will note.

I reviewed the Epson WP-4540 some time back which is the big brother to this machine, and whereas the 4540 has a bigger footprint, slightly faster speed, double paper tray, and some other features, this unit excels at it''s job, for less money, and the addition of air print comparability from your smartphone.

It''s still a bulky unit, the delivered package is 24 pounds, and you need a reasonable amount of room to set it up.

That''s not a problem however with Wifi, so you don''t have to have it sitting next to your computer. A central location actually works well so everyone in the house can connect for shared printing.

Big question for all printers is of course ink, like it it''s big brother the 3540 takes 4 cartridges, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and of course Black, and these run individually almost $10 cheaper per unit than the 4540.

I would recommend the Epson brand ink, and definitely the XL cartridges, they are worth it for longevity. Also, i continue to run my cartridges long after the on screen low ink warning, and they do seem to last well. You can also save on multipacks, but I would suggest staying away from bargain brands.

Ideal for a small office, the multi document feed on top like an old fashioned copier is great for scanning multi documents into a single file, or PDF for easy emailing, and storing. The copy function is also touch and go, without having to constantly lift the lid on the scan bed.

Printing is pretty fast too, for home use printing, even in color.

Overall I gave it 4 stars, with a string of features too long to list here, wireless accessibility, and good ink consumption. Even photo reproduction is good, although probably not quite good enough for pro''s.

This printer is feature rich, yet simple to set up and intuitive to use. It will act as a wireless network printer, a scanner, a full featured copier, and a fax machine.

Installation was a snap, and I had it up and running in under 30 minutes. The printer software does need to be installed on each computer you intend to print from, but after the first computer is done, the other ones go quickly.

Things I liked:

1) Easy set up

2) Intuitive to use

3) Color touchscreen on printer is bright and clear, and makes using the machine very simple

4) Excellent printouts

5) Relatively quick printing for an inkjet

6) Ability to print front and back.

7) Nice scanner interface software

8) Exceptionally nice color prints when using the special papers.

9) Fairly simple to print on envelopes and different sized papers

Things I did not like:

1) Nonstandard cordCord is not like a normal one you see on just about all electronic devices today. Not only is the cord nonstandard, it is too short. This caused a little bit of a hassle in getting it plugged into my power strip. Wish they would stick with standard power cord.

2) It is an inkjetwhich means endless $$$ on cartridges, and wasted ink on printhead cleaning if you do not use it that often. I much prefer a color laserject, and home units are coming out that are becoming very affordable.

3) Can not scan directly from photoshop CS5. Tried several things and then found something on the Epson WEB site that indicated that it was not possible to scan directly from CS5, and the work around was to scan using Epson software and then load file into photoshop. Yes, this is a workaround, but boy did I enjoy scanning directly into photoshop when I had lots of scans to do.

Overall, this printer represents a feature rich machine which is easy to use and delivers exceptional results. Well designed, well engineered, and it produces wonderful output. Overall, this machine is a winner.

The printer is very easy to set up. You can print from your iOS device, using AirPrint, directly. Very simple. The printer is easy to unpack, simple instructions on setup, step by step. I was using the printer in less than 20 minutes after lugging the box into the office.

I had a couple of minor issues setting it up on the Mac side (10.8.2). All but one were quickly fixable (item 3 below will take some additional research):

1. Since the default paper tray is 1 (top), if you put a stack of envelopes in tray 1 and then print with the defaults, you''ll print on an envelope, not on the paper in tray 2 (bottom) as you expect. The way I found to get around this was to create a printing "Preset" in Word or any other application. That preset is then available for all other applications. I created a preset that used the "Alternate" tray (tray 2, bottom) so when I want to print on regular paper, I just make sure I pick the Alternate preset. If there''s a better way to do that, I''d like to know about it.

I thought it was cool that Epson thought about giving you two trays and even then, thinking about making one of them for multiple envelopes! This printer seems very well thought out.

2. Scanning didn''t initially work from the EPSON itself (to the Mac from the printer), but after a Mac reboot it worked fine. Probably just a setup issue. It''s been fine since then.

It''s nice in that if you put a stack of pages in the ADF part of the printer and select Scan from the printer, it automatically creates a separate file for you for each page. Using Image Capture from the Mac side worked flawlessly. As with my last printer, you can stack multiple pages into the ADF and then tell the Image Capture Mac application to create one PDF file with all the scanned pages. You can create individual files too if that''s what you want.

3. I wasn''t able to figure out how to get the AirPrint to use Tray 2 (bottom) so I''m currently not able to use that unless I forget about having the stack of envelopes in tray 1, which I''ll probably end up doing. AirPrint prints to tray 1 as the default so for me, it prints whatever, or tries to, to an envelope. There may be a way to configure the EPSON for AirPrint to use tray 2 (bottom); I just haven''t found it yet.

Envelope handling is amazing. You can, as mentioned above, put a stack of envelopes in tray 1 (top) or you can feed them individually from the rear of the printer. Coming from an ink jet printer that totally lacked envelope support, this printer supports envelopes perfectly.

I called the free technical support (toll number) and they were very good and very friendly as well. The only issue I had with support was that nobody I spoke with actually had a Mac. So, at some point, their help became a bit more "high level" when they said: "Could you hold please so I can consult my resources..." The support was still fine and no complaints here, but I figured out the Preset workaround for tray 2 when I was talking to them and actually explained it to them so they could update their ... "resources". I''m sure if they had a Mac they could have figured it out as well.

Hooking up the printer to the Ethernet network was as painless as plugging in the RJ-45 cable. No worries there at all. Not using wireless.

I won''t go into all the features this printer has since you''ve probably already read about them before reading reviews, but I haven''t had anything other than good results. The printer is just great. And, it''s fast.

I highly recommend it!
