The product arrived in a very timely manner and installed without a hitch. I do appreciate the fact that labels are provided to facilitate the recycling of your old toner cartridges. I do wish that these were a bit less expensive, but that''s what you get with toner and ink.

Lexmark Interpret S405 Wireless N Multifunction Inkjet Printer

Lexmark Interpret S405 Wireless N Multifunction Inkjet Printer
  • WiFi N provides up to 3x the coverage and faster transfer speeds than wireless G technology.
  • Lexmark''s industry leading three year warranty with lifetime technical support provides peace of mind.
  • Individual ink cartridges allow customers to replace only the ink that is needed.
  • 35 page automatic document feeder easily handles large printing, scanning, copying, and fax jobs.
  • Document print speeds of up to 33 ppm; borderless 4"x6" photos in less than 24 seconds

I bought the S405 through Amazon mostly on the basis of favorable reviews here and on other sites where electronic products are reviewed. Buying a printer that was efficient---meaning, didn''t use much---on ink was highly important. In general, manufacturers price printers dirt cheap and then gouge you on replacement ink cartridges. All reviews rated the S405, and other Lexmark printers that use the 100 series cartridges, very highly in this regard. I went to a brick and mortar store and the sales people confirmed the Lexmark was very good in this regard. But, the particular S405 *I* received has been horrible. The cartridges packaged with it were toys---they ran out after just a few sheets of paper. I bought a full set (i.e., one black, 3 color) of cartridges at Office Depot, which set me back around $80, and installed them. These were the "XL" type---they cost more than the regular "L" cartridges but are supposed to be something like 3x more efficient for the difference in price. I expected a set like this to last something like 1/2 year at the rate we print---we use the Lexmark mostly for copying and color printing which we don''t do much of, for regular black and white we use a different (laser) printer. It''s been around one month and the black is nearly empty, all 3 color cartridges are only around 20-25% full, and we''ve only printed a little more than 100 sheets. At this rate, I will spend something like $700-$800 per year on ink, which is insane. I am in discussions with Lexmark technical support and most likely they will send a replacement printer, but first they want to ship me another cartridge and have me try again---as if it''s at all likely that I bought 4 different malfunctioing cartridges at Office Depot! Anyways, the purpose of this review isn''t to complain about Lexmark service, rather just to warn that so far I have no evidence this printer is at all efficient on ink, rather, just the opposite. A couple of other annoying things: when you install cartridges, they don''t seat firmly. Actually, this might be related to my poor ink usage, perhaps this printer has some defect in the shape of the cartridge containers. Anyways, on every other printer I have ever used cartridges snap firmly into a compartment with some sort of spring-type grip and you can hear a distinct click, i.e., there can be no doubt whether a cartridge is seated properly. With this Lexmark you can never tell when a cartridge is properly seated, there is sometimes a click sometime not and it never feels firmly in place. Lastly, we have 5 computers in our house that need to reach the Lexmark wirelessly. So, I had to do 5 installations. Each installation was time consuming---this is *NOT* a printer where you can just "connect" and have the operating system automatically find drivers and set it up, it needs the Lexmark CD and a long procedure. On several of my home computers I had to repeat the procedure 2 to 3 times to get the installation to work. It is tricky, and will fail without obvious cause-and-effect reasons. The computers I installed on ran 3 different Windows systems, XP, Vista and 7, but the failures were spread around, they weren''t all on one type. It simply appears to be hit or miss whether the install will work. By the way, I''ve got a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and 20 years experience in processor design, and so I know my way around these things, if I''m making errors then errors are too easy to make!

This is my second Lexmark printer. What I like about this, and my previous printer is that it is fairly easy to set up. There are separate buttons for each function, which are fairly easy to use. However There are 2 issues that you need to consider if you are considering this printer 1. The ADF is VERY sensitive, and tricky to use.If you are reading this because you are having a problem, push the paper very very slowly forward. The moment you hear the beep, stop, and push start for the scan to start.

2.It has separate ink cartridges, which sounds great, you don''t have to pay for a whole cartridge if only one colour runs out. BUT if one colour runs out the printer stops working, which means you have to have spares.I found the printing speed very slow too, but for home use that isn''t too serious.I would proceed with caution on this printer. I returned mine this morning, and am trying to decide what to replace it with.

I bought this printer for it''s wireless capabilities and ease of use and it has separate cartridges which is good. I do not print a lot of useless paper anymore as I have gotten into the habit of saving items as PDF files. Setup was easy and it has worked well so far in the few weeks I have had it.

Now the rub, this printer sucks up more ink than a vacuum cleaner and dust. I do not have 50 pieces of paper run through it yet and the Black ink needs to be replaced and yes these cartridges are ones I bought when I purchased the printer, I think I got about 5 pages from the temp cartridges that came with it. The yellow and blue are below 50% and the magenta is down to 25%. I have been running this printer on quick print. Staples does not carry the larger volume cartridges but at the rate this thing sucks up ink it would make little difference.

To bad Lexmark could not get it right. There is no way to tell how many pages you have run through unless you actually keep track on your own.

As far as recommending this printer to anyone else I would not. I would suggest finding another brand which tells you a basic amount of pages before you need to change cartridges. Maybe one of these days printer companies will get it right and make printers that get good ink mileage and you don''t have to go into debt to buy ink.

When I tried to clear a paper jam, I found that the S405 does not have a rear door for clearing paper jams. There was no way to get at the paper, which was jammed in the bottom of the S405. I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with a Lexmark technician. He was not successful in resolving the problem. He had to bump the problem up to a more experienced technician, who would get back to me in 24 to 48 hours. About 30 hours later, I returned unit to the store where I purchased it.

I would not buy an S405 until this engineering defect is remedied.

This printer fails on many fronts:

wireless set up does not work with more than one computer in the house (windows 7) even if one of those computers is hard wired to the printer

automatic feed does not work for even one piece of paper

i do not print a lot, and not a lot in color yet it burns through printer cartridges at an extremely high rate

there is absolutely no way to clear a paper jam there is no door giving access

i estimate that 1 out of 10 print jobs will print without issue more often than not there is some message about replacing the cartridge head, or cleaning it, which often results in printning a full page of colored lines with no way to stop it (burning another set of cartridges!).

there is no way to set default to print in B&W

the manufacturer considered the first printer a lemon and replaced it. the issues experienced the ssecond time were identical.

  • Assembly Required: No, Color: White, Media Quantity: 2500 x Card, Print Technology: Laser
  • Sold as 1 box

I''ve purchased the product several times and in the past I would have given it 5 stars.

However, this latest shipment was a bit different from past ones. The card don''t separate well in the latest shipment; the perforations don''t seem deep enough. Also, one side is glossy/plastic and it peels where the perforations aren''t complete.

So, the last shipment is almost unacceptable. The prior were excellent. My rating of 2 stars is a compromise.

Ilford Premium Gloss 4 x 6 Inch Photo Paper 50 Sheets (1146567)

Ilford Premium Gloss 4 x 6 Inch Photo Paper 50 Sheets
  • Smooth Gloss Surface
  • Works With All Inkjet Printers
  • Instant Dry
  • Water Resistant
  • Heavyweight 250 gsm Look and Feel of Traditional Photos

I purchased this paper in 4x6, 5x7, & 8.5x11, so this review applies to all sizes. The past 5 years or so, I used Canon glossy II paper. I happened upon the Ilford on Amazon and was surprised at the price. I''m well familiar with the Ilford brand. I have friends who are professional commercial photographers and they used it exclusively since pre digital photography. So it''s no "off brand".

This is really nice paper. Beautiful, saturated colors, and great contrast. The pearl premium paper has a really nice smooth feel to it and is a matte type finish. The premium glossy, in my eyes opinion, produces prints equal to the canon glossyII. As far as fading only time will tell. But all framed prints should have UV glass to minimize fading. It''s unlikely that it will be in most store bought frames, unless is states so on the frame. The UV glass can be purchased cut to size at any frame shop.

Getting back to the paper. Pearl finish or gloss: it''s a matter of personal preference. I got both, and haven''t picked a favorite. Some images I may decide look better with one or the other. But it''s surely inexpensive enough to experiment with. Anyway, I think that it great paper and I''ll continue to buy it. Amazon had the premium pearl in 4x6 & 8.5x11 and the premium gloss in 4x6, 5x7, & 8.5x11 through seller Unique Photo. I purchased all 5 that were available. It is great paper at a great price and I Highly recommend it.

Granted these are small prints but the high resolution draws your attention right into the photo. The high gloss also adds a touch of class, too. Highly recommend this product especially to those doing scrapbook photos as well as any other uses.

I bought these for packaging purposes for my home business. My logo is a small, round cartoon image. I was able to lay-in the image using Avery''s template for MS Word, but despite it looking perfect in "Print Preview", the actual printed sheet was a big mess. No matter what I did-resizing the image, tweaking the margins, realigning the images individually, etc etc would get the sheet aligned properly. Some part of the logo was always slightly outside of the cut area. That probably doesn''t seem like a big deal, but when you need your items to be packaged and displayed attractively, a sloppy looking label just won''t do.

I''ve also used the Avery business card sheets and templates. The layout is much more complicated, but strangely effortless compared to these round label sheets. I honestly think I would have spent less time if I''d just printed these labels on plain paper and cut them out individually with scissors. If I hadn''t printed so many test sheets, I would have returned these for a refund. Without a functional template these labels are basically just blank white stickers. Great product if you want to make a Zen statement, but not so much if you have something to sell.

I''ve used these labels on the back of cards to say promotional messages. Short and sweet. Registration is near perfect from top to bottom of the sheet which means the labels are evenly placed and the backing glides through the printer with ease. The adhesive is very good. After a few hours, it''s almost impossible to for the label to fall off/remove whatever you place it on such as another paper, cardboard, smooth plastic.

Phaser 3300MFP/X Black and White Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax

Phaser 3300MFP/X Black and White Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax
  • Accepts Paper Size - Letter, Legal, Folio, Oficio, A4, A5, A6, JIS B5, ISO B5, Executive
  • Auto Document Feed/Sheets - 50
  • Broadcast Groups - 249
  • Catalog Publishing Type - Copier/Fax/Multifunction Machines-Multifunction
  • Compliance, Standards - ENERGY STAR Qualified

The Xerox Phaser 3300MFP has delivered more than I expected at a very reasonable cost given the system''s capabilities.

1) Physical installation is a snap-just remove it from the carton, plug cables into the only places they fit, remove the tape that holds doors closed, insert the toner cartridge, unlock the scanner mechanism and it''s done. In our case we also added the second 250 sheet paper tray which equally simple.

2) Software installation on a Windows-7 Professional platform was limited to inserting the CD-ROM, telling it to use a network connected printer, and picking the printer from a displayed list.

3) Setting up the printers firmware uses the web interface which worked exactly as expected and offered no problems that an occational quick look into the on-line manual failed to cure.

4) EVERY feature worked as documented, including scan to Email, scan to Network, and FAX forward to Email.

The web interface can be a bit difficult for people with little or no ability to actually read and follow instructions. But if you open the manual in one browser window and the machine''s web interface in another and then accept that Xerox knows more about their machine than you do... it all works fine.

Some features are especially nice. One very useful one is that it you can put a stack of pages in the feeder and then scan them directly to a folder on your computer in one of several formats. Another useful feature, especially for small business types, is that incoming faxes can be set to automatically forward to your email as a PDF file. This is great because if an order or contract is sent by fax you can get it on your Blackberry or iPhone when away from the office.

The only "fault" I have with it is the machine''s control panel. It uses a telephone keypad for all data input which makes things like entering Email addresses and mixed-case passwords sluggish. Perhaps Xerox will put a better human interface on the next generation.

Otherwise... a very good product that demonstrates good value.

Buy Phaser 3300MFP/X Black and White Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax Now

I had been buying the Xerox Phaser 3200MFP/N Multi-Function Network Printer/Fax/Scanner/Email for branch offices I support but was very disappointed in the quality and cost per page. So when Xerox came out with the 3300 MFP I was interested in seeing how it compared.

While the part number maybe close, the machines are completely different. The 3300 MFP is more rugged, with a real paper tray (optional add on paper trays available), a lower cost per page, and better paper handling. It offers all of the features you would expect on a modern laser, scan to e-mail, network scanning, printing, and faxing. I have purchased 5 of these so far (now 10). The initial firmware these some of the units shipped with was buggy and as noted by another reviewer the Web user interface (UI) did not work in IE and other browsers. However, Xerox soon corrected that problem with a significant firmware update that corrected the UI and even required new drivers on the work stations.

Setup and administration was very strait forward via the Web interface (nearly identical to any other Xerox copier). You can import address books for fax and e-mail, and tweak all of the default settings. I have had no complaints from the users and with 9+ (now 14+) months of usage under there belt, these printers continue to perform well.

Other vendors may have similar products, but one area Xerox has really shined is there onsite technical support. While no of my 3300''s have required onsite services, Xerox has always come through for me on other units I have installed. (The onsite warranty is an optional add on.) (I have had one ADF feeder that had some problems jamming but they were quick to repair it)

So where does this unit come short? It does not support SSL for SMTP which means if you use Gmail or some other vendor that requires SSL for SMTP you are going to have trouble. One work around to this is setting up a computer running STUNNEL () a free open source project that you can use to proxy through. The other feature lacking is LDAP support for a centralize e-mail address list. The only other "weakness" it has is a limited darken/lighten range when making copies. It has this feature but it does not have the same range that a full blown copier has.

Bottom line if you are looking for a solid, cost effective, multifunction unit, in my opinion, this is it. (Revised this review because it does support duplexing which I had incorrectly stated it did not. My review is other wise still the same after more than a year of usage.)

Read Best Reviews of Phaser 3300MFP/X Black and White Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax Here

The print and scan quality are good. Interface and usability are bad. This device gets a one star rating because it does not do what it advertises it can do. Network scanning is only available via PC (not much of a surprise) although they don''t tell you that when you buy the thing. It also claims that it can scan to email over the network. It really can''t, not if your email server requires SSL, like 90% of email servers do. Duh! None of these limitations are listed anywhere, and the only way to discover that the scan to email doesn''t work with SSL is to call tier 2 technical support to discover it. If you buy it and can''t get it to work within a week, it isn''t you. The machine doesn''t work. Rather, I should say that it does not work as advertised, hence the one star rating.

Want Phaser 3300MFP/X Black and White Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax Discount?

I''ve only spent about 6 hours with my new xerox phaser 3300 mfp and I''m very disappointed. It has a web page that is built into the machine. I have no trouble accessing it, but it is not compatible with any web browsers. I''ve tried FireFox and IE8 on a XP machine and FireFox and Safari on a mac. The navigation buttons disappears after you switch pages and the images don''t load until you hold your pointer over them. It is just flaky as can be. Then, to make things worse, when I do attempt to change a setting, I get an "error on page" warning in IE8. So, I can''t change settings.

The manual is also full of errors. It is like it was written for a different machine and pasted into this machines manual and not fully updated to be accurate with this machine. It tells me to go to areas in the browser accessible control panel that simply don''t exist. If Xerox reads this, look how it tells you to set SMTP in the browser based interface and then look at the reality of where the SMTP settings are.

I called Xerox and he confirmed the errors in the instructions and confirmed that it isn''t compatible with hardly any "new" browsers. He said it worked with a lot of outdated versions of popular browsers. He had me download OPERA rather than reverting to an older version of IE. Now it works fine, but I still have to figure it out without much help from the manual as it is not written with any degree of accuracy.

T

We would highly recommend all the Phaser Printers. We own 6 printers (all are color except this one). We use this as a back up printer and mainly as a fax machine.

The solid ink printers are unreal in the quality of print. The laser printers are good too. Supplies are pricey though! We also would recommend that you only buy OEM parts. We ruined 2 printers by buying supplies that were not XEROX. You may find it cheaper to keep buying a new printer versus the supplies too?

The case gives excellent protection to my printer and notebook, it also has good storage space that I use for paper, wireless mouse, 10-key pad, CD''s . . .

My only complaint is with the handles, within a week one of them torn loose from the case, I don''t feel comfortable using the shoulder strap, but it works just fine.

Overall the case is a good product, I do feel that HP thinks it''s more valuable than I do after having it for a while. List price of $89.99 is more than I think it''s worth. At that price, I wouldn''t buy it again.

Since HP produced the mobile printer, we''ve needed an answer for transporting the printer along with our laptop. This is their answer and they''re the only ones I know of addressing this issue. If you''re going to get a mobile printer, you''re going to need this bag to transport all your mobile gear together. The center compartment holds the printer and all the adapters for printer and computer and you might as well throw the phone charger in there, and the outer compartment on one side protects your mobile computer while on the other side you will find the pockets for digital media, pens, accessories and files.

I do wish they''d put some wheels and a telescoping handle on this bag though. With an entire office packed in there, if you''re going through an airport, this can begin to weigh on you. It does have the sleeve for sliding over the handle of another wheeled bag so you do have some method of putting all that gear on wheels. Most airlines only allow one carry on bag, so if this is going to be your carry on, there go your wheels.

I''ll take it rather than leave it.

  • Fast, compact Black & White Laser Multifunction Printer with easy Built-in Wireless setup.
  • Fast 21 ppm speeds and quick first page out time for less time waiting.
  • 10,000 Monthly duty cyclefor more reliability from your printer.

There''s a lot to like about this Samsung SCX-3405FW Wireless Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax, and one of the best parts was that it could be set up so quickly. In fact, I had it printing from a Windows 7 notebook and a MacBook Pro within ten minutes of taking it out of the box, and that was a surprise in itself.

The wireless connection was easy to set up, and once the unit was online and the paper was loaded, everything worked quite efficiently. For those who want the quick facts, the good and the not so good, here they are.

Pros:

* Very solid all-in-one SOHO solution where space is at a premium.

* Extremely fast setup with either Window 7 or Mac OS X

* Connects via built-in wireless 802.11; USB 2.0; Ethernet 10/100 Base TX

* Fast printing, over 20 pages per minute (ppm); verified

* First print out in less than 10 seconds from ready

* High-resolution black & white printing; about 1,200 x 1,200 dpi

* Holds about 150 sheets standard 20 lb. letter paper

* Prints on plain paper, envelopes, labels and other paper stock

* Auto document feeder (ADF) holds up to 40 sheets

* Fax modem speed at 33.6 Kbps (not verified)

* Warranty: 12 months, parts & labor

Cons:

* Built-in LCD display is a bit small at 16 x 2 line; hard to read

Details & First Impressions:

The printer was packaged very well, and it only took a few minutes to unpack it from the carton and review the contents. Its desktop footprint is very small; at 15.8" wide and 11.5" deep it takes up little more space than my Windows 7 notebook, and at 11.7" high it''s not very obtrusive at all. It weighs less than 18 lbs., so it''s easy to move. There was no real user manual, but here''s one available online for download from Samsung. Besides the printer itself, is came with the following:

CD software

A quick installation guide

A full network installation guide

French display panel sticker

An AC power cord

A USB cord

A phone cord (for fax)

A warranty booklet

Did a brief overview of the basic setup, plugged in the power and the included USB cord (wireless would come later). The instructions indicated to shake the toner cartridge, so I did. Paper loading was easy, and printing the first documents from a Word document in the Windows 7 notebook with embedded images and graphics was impressive, with clear and sharp details and good grey scaling. Did the same with the MacBook Pro with equal results.

Tackled the wireless setup next, using the included manual. All went fine, but it''s suggested that you have the details of your own wireless network handy for reference.

In Use:

This all-in-one printer, scanner, copier and fax system is perfect for the small office & home office (SOHO) environments, especially where space may be at a premium. It''s extremely quiet in it''s operation, more so than any office printer that I''ve encountered, and once can actually make a phone call without leaving the room when it''s printing.

Scanning was tried only on the Windows 7 notebook, and with the software installed it''s quite simple once you learn the interface. You just right click Smart Panel in the Windows task bar, select Scan Manager, select the printer you want to use, and then click Quick Scan. Once the Quick Scan dialog appears, you set the Save Location, the File Name (default is the date and time the scan is performed), and the File Format, which will be the default file type for each consecutive scan. Your choices are TIFF, PDF, BMP, and JPG formats. After entering this info, click OK and then click Scan to scan the document to the PC.

Will admit that I did not use the fax feature on this all-in-one unit, and for the primary reason that I personally have very little (if any) use for it. Scanning directly to email can be done, which is something that I find quite useful, as do the people with whom I correspond. It''s nice to know that it''s there if needs change in the future, but it''s not something that I''ve done in years.

Copying documents is straightforward, and you can also prints multiple image copies from the original document onto a single page. The actual number of images is automatically determined by the size of original image and paper size. Copy speed is the same as printing (about 15 to 21 ppm in letter format), and there are a number of different options that you can choose. Just remember that your results will be in blank & white.

The original toner cartridge is limited, so plan on getting one soon. This seems to be an industry-wide practice now, somewhat irritating, but that''s just the way it is, so please don''t shoot the messenger. A new cartridge should give you about 1,500 printouts, and the proper replacement toner cartridge for this unit is the Samsung MLT-D101S/XAA Toner 1.5K Yield (ML-2165W, SCX-3405FW, SF-760P). It can be ordered here on Amazon or probably picked up from your local office supply store.

Summary:

Color laser printers can be very expensive, as can be their toner cartridges. This is a personal choice, but for color printing, especially when dealing with photos, I prefer using a separate photo-grade inkjet printer. For document processing, a good monochrome high-speed printer, especially if it''s an all-in-one, is a far more economical and functional choice for daily needs.

When looking at this printer sitting next to me right now, the first thought is how compact it is, smaller than my old HP LaserJet 4L from years ago, yet far faster, much quieter and with far better ergonomics and controls. The second thought is one that dominates: this all-in-one is very quiet. It''s one of the easiest printers that I''ve encountered to set up, and the results that I''ve been getting are surprisingly good. It''s compact, fast, efficient and quiet, which makes it ideal for any SOHO environment. If you need an all-in-one and can forego color printing, this for the money, this Samsung SCX-3405FW is an excellent choice, and is easily worthy of a 5-star recommendation.

I''ve owned many Samsung printers over the years which is the reason I turned to them again when my beloved mutlifunction printer of 7 years finally kicked it this year. This new variant has given me nothing but headaches since it arrived.

First, lets talk about the little pop out panel. It is super tiny and so are the buttons. I have really small hands and I think the buttons are too small, so I can''t imagine normal man hands using it. It''s difficult to read the menu and navigate. My previous model had a big screen on the top, so this is definitely a negative for me.

Next, wifi connectivity is erratic. It does it, but it frequently just loses connection for no apparent reason. I''ve got a whole network of computers and other printers which aren''t losing connection, just this one. It''s a pain to constantly reset it.

Another annoying problem is that the fax goes off in the middle of phone calls. Someone calls; I answer the phone; we''re talking for 10 minutes and then bam fax noises screaching in your ear. Now I can''t keep the fax cord plugged in all the time. I plug it in only when I''m going to make an outgoing fax.

And the most annoying factor, which is happening with all printers these days, is the ridiculous microchip that limits the amount of prints you can get out of your cartridge. The older models didn''t have it and you could print until the toner turned faded so you get every bit out of it. When you consider the cost of these things it''s absurd to limit the use. I''m definitely not getting the amount of pages it claims and it''s stopping me from printing when there is most likely quite a lot of toner still left in the container. Yes, there are some hacks you can apply to the printer or buy new chips, however you shouldn''t have to mod your own device to make it work.

So, it gets 2 stars because it turns on, makes copies, sends faxes and sometimes prints when it has connection to the network and isn''t limiting my toner usage. It is definitely a step back in quality, user friendliness and efficiency that I had grown to love in the older Samsung devices.

This Samsung Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer, Scanner, Copier, and Fax all-in-one is a good choice for home or small office use. We are almost addicted to printing at our house and, with the demands of two students and projects for my wife''s small business. Using an inkjet cartridge based printer can get very expensive, especially when most of the output is fine in "black & white" or grey-scale. This all-in-one allows us to cut down on our printing costs while giving us handy features like scanning and faxing. Here are my observations:

What''s Included: Printer, "Starter" Toner Cartridge (pre-installed), Power Cord, Installation CD, Quick Start Guide, Installation Manual, French Control Panel Overlay (English is pre-installed), USB Cable (a nice surprise) and Phone Cord

My Setup; We live in a very old house that is not well suited to wired networking (supported, but cable not provided) and all four us use laptops on our wireless home network. After unboxing the printer, removing the numerous tape strips hold the moving parts down, reading the quick install directions, and shaking the toner cartridge (as instructed), I powered up the unit and pressed the glowing "WPS" button and then acknowledged the connection in my wireless router by entering the printer code shown on the LCD screen. The printer was then connected to our network in a matter of minutes. Next I installed the software drivers and management programs (Samsung Easy Print Manager, SmarThru Office 2, and Samsung Scan Assistant) on our PCs (Vista and Windows 7), and the printer was "found" quickly by the software.

Software notes:

* Easy Print Manager; lets you access the device setting settings and advance functionality (like Alerts, Scan to PC settings, etc) You might need this Username "admin", and this Password "sec00000" the first time you want to change the settings

* SmarThru Office 2; Document management package, I don''t intend to use it

* Scan Assistant; Presents a scanning interface (similar to the TWAIN screen when accessed from graphics programs), you can select "Custom Install" to enable "OCR" (Optical Character Recognition to save documents in "Text" formats)

Pros -

+ Small Size; relatively compact for an all-in-one

+ Print Quality; sharp and clear text and graphics

+ Print Speed; very fast printing

+ Scan Quality; full color scanning to the PC is sharp and accurate

+ OCR Accuracy; surprisingly good accuracy on the test pages I tried, very near 100%

+ FAX; basic send/receive work well, more advance features can be set in the "Easy Print Manager" options (address book, etc)

+ Copying; B&W/Grey-Scale works great, either single page or via the automatic document feeder

Cons -

Poor Wi-Fi Reception; this seems to have a very weak antenna since it needed to be move much closer to my wireless router than my other Wi-Fi devices

Physical Quality; the plastic foldout paper trays feel very flimsy and I am concerned about their longevity if they get "bumped"

LCD Screen; this is the biggest issue for me, as it is very hard to read

Misc -

* "Starter" Toner Cartridge; this is partial cartridge that will not last long, use Samsung MLT-D101S/XAA Toner 1.5K Yield (ML-2165W, SCX-3405FW, SF-760P)

* "Power Save"; I extended this from "1 Minute" to "30 Minutes" in the "Easy Print Manager" options to avoid having to go physically "wake up" the unit between scanning jobs (a personal preference)

This nicely augments our networked color inkjet printer for home use and is generally a very useful multifunction device.

Recommended!

This is a satisfying all-in-one printer, scanner, and copier. I have no need for a fax machine, although it is a convenient feature to have available if it is ever needed. It has a good, but not great, build, but always works when I need it. Despite a few setup issues, I''m please with its performance.

There are three ways to connect this device -USB, ethernet, and wireless. My preferred choice was wireless -but it did not go well at all. In order to setup the wireless connection, you need to connect the device to a PC using the USB cable. After well over an hour -possibly 90 minutes -I only managed to connect it wirelessly to my router once. But after the printer went into "sleep" mode, it would not wake up on its own and the wireless connection was lost. After several failed attempted to reconnect it, I decided to use the ethernet option -since the router was only four feet away! -and have not looked back. The printer immediately obtained an IP address, and after two months, I have not experienced any issues with a drop or lack of connectivity, even after rebooting both the router and the printer. While wireless would have been convenient, it simply didn''t work out for me.

The device comes with a software suite installation CD. Needless to say, the software is very fat -and take a very long time to install. There''s no option (from what I could tell) to install only the parts you need. For example, if you don''t plan on using the fax features, the fax features of the software are still installed. The software itself remains fairly hidden on your PC when running, and provides the usual status updates regarding jobs. What is odd, however, is that you cannot adjust settings on the printer while connected via Wireless or Ethernet. You need to connect the printer via USB, or you need to adjust settings using the device''s front-panel menus.

From a design perspective, the printer does not have a particularly solid build -very lightweight plastic, especially on doors and panels. There is no paper-cassette, only a paper tray, so paper capacity is somewhat limited. This is, at best, a lightweight/light-job printer. The front panel keypad can be lifted out to an angle for easy viewing. While it has status lights to show current status, the LCD does not illuminate, which makes it difficult to view.

From a performance perspective, printing is what you would expect. Quality is good. Warm-up time from sleep-mode is very respectable. It prints a page fairly quickly. My only complain is related to "paper out": when the printer runs out of paper, it thinks there is a jam, and you need to open the upper doors to "clear" this error status. Scanning is also good. The default quality of scanning is 300 dpi, which can be increased to 600 dpi, and the printer scans in both b&w and color. A great feature is being able to scan to a PC -which means you don''t need to open any software on the PC. You select the PC destination using the front panel keypad, scan the document, and the document will be sent to the "My Documents" directory of the destination PC. This functionality is so easy, my wife figured it out without having to ask me how it works. Copying is good, and very handy. The device has autofeed, so if you have a multi-page document that needs to be scanned or copied, you can load the entire document and then scan or copy the entire thing.

From a user perspective, "it always works".

It is important to note that the toner supplied is only a short-duration toner cartridge -it won''t last long at all.

Better setup, a slightly better build, and a dedicated paper cartridge would make this good printer even better. Otherwise, it is a reliable networked printer that has not given me any trouble in over two months. If you need a multifunction device, this is recommended.

I was hesitant to try the Samsung SCX-3405FW Printer because the the stock photo makes it look big and bulky. I was wrong! The printer is definitely more compact than what you see in the picture and I will try to get an actual pic up here for you so that you can see for yourself! Set up is a total breeze with Win 7 it took maybe all of 5-10 minutes from the time I opened the box. The unit itself produces lightning fast copies and seems to be holding it''s own for household use. However, the con....there is always a but.....the toner is expensive. You will get a trial size with the printer, but you are looking at an additional $70 or additional dollars in toner to get you set up. I guess I am spoiled with my HP printers coming with ink!

Nice calculator. The programmable tax feature is terrific.

The machine did not arrive with any ink. None. Nada. Zip.

Before it could be used, we had to run all over town to find a stupid little 2-dollar ink piece.

Very unhappy.

This order was to replace the "not-working" age old product. I was impressed with the older model and purchased a new one of the same as before.

Love it very much.
