I purchased this for my five-year-old daughter instead of buying one of the kids'' version of it. It is so simple and easy to use that an unsupervised five-year-old can work it. The sticker material is not inexpensive, but the machine is efficient at how it uses it. With a little bit of tutoring my daughter knows how to conserve the tape and make it last a while. Let me start by saying that I am not into scrapbooking and I don''t consider myself to be very creative. However, I have a five year old son who absolutely LOVES to do crafts. The Canon printer has been wonderful for me so far. It was easy to set up and install and worked right away. I''m using Snow Leopard on a Mac, so I had to download the actual driver from Canon''s web site, but this is easy to do and pretty self-explanatory.
I love that the printer is all enclosed. The regular paper sits in a tray at the bottom, and everything can be closed up so that dust doesn''t get into it. Photo paper is loaded at the rear.
This printer has individual ink cartridges, a plus in my opinion.
I am using it lightly (10-15 regular color pages, 1-2 photos per week) so I have not dented the supply level on the ink cartridges, and can''t really comment on how fast the ink runs out. The print quality is pretty good for the regular paper, and very good for photos. I was very impressed with the photos that I printed, they were sharp and the color was great.
The software drivers are adequate and not too confusing. I found this printer very easy to use and of good quality. I''m very happy with it, and it''s miles better than my old Epson.

Aug. 2010, 8 months later: I''ve had to change my opinion of this printer. It still puts out the best photos I''ve seen from any inkjet printer, and I''ve had my share. The colors are true and vivid. However, to get true and vivid, you can go broke on the ink. This printer was costing me so much in ink that I no longer print a "good photo" until two to three weeks after taking it. That''s just to be sure that it''s as good as I initially thought, haven''t taken a better shot since, and that I''m willing to use the ink. And, I''ve switched from 8x10 to 5x7 prints. In 8 months, I''ve spent over $300 on ink!!!!Second, I couldn''t understand why everyone was complaining about how slow this printer was. When I first got it, I thought it was fast. Now, it''s either slowed down to a snail''s pace, or I''m just now paying attention.
This is not my primary printer, and I wasn''t really paying attention until one day I didn''t use my LaserJet IV (almost 18 years old and still going strong, but B&W), and just left it set on the PIXMA, and I swear it took the better part of 5 minutes to get around to printing the photo. Then, I printed a one page black and white note. Not even the font was fancy: Times Roman, 12 pt. It took 90 seconds to get a page printed.
Why the difference in perception? I warned in my initial review that you had to set the printer on "draft" when printing just a B&W document. Well, after printing a batch of photos on high quality, I forgot to reset it to draft. It''s a pain in the ... neck, but the difference in speed is phenomenal. And "draft quality" is actually very good for a document, even a document that has a few color font changes.
Would I recommend this printer? No. Would I buy it again? Probably, and the reason is that I just don''t know what printer would have the quality of prints. Speed is not that important when it comes to my photographic endeavors. Speed is important for the handbooks and manuals that I write, and my old HP has yet to fail me. If speed and ink costs are important, DO NOT buy this printer. In a Wall Street Journal article from last year, it stated that 80% of HP''s profits come from in sales. What? You thought that a $79 printer was too good to be true? Well, I''ve known about ink costs for many years, but I''ve had Canon, Epson, and HP printers and they can all drive you to the poorhouse when it comes to ink. Canon has the best prints, but what good is it if you can''t afford the ink to run it. And now, instead of dying with a load of ink on my hands, I''m going to die with a load of 8x10 photo paper. HP photo paper at that. Everybody wins but me. ;.)
And now back to our regularly scheduled review. From December 2009, unchanged.
I waited a month before writing this review, wanting to make sure that I gave the printer its due, and be fair to what it turns out to be its one fault, common to almost all inkjet printers.
In one sentence: this is a well-designed, beautifully made, great printer than does everything I want, and then some. In more than one sentence...
We all know that printer manufacturers make 80% of their profits from ink. Well, the problem with this Canon, is that that''s going to 90%. However, since the quality and speed of print is so much better than the Canon 150 that it replaced, I can''t officially complain until next year.
I don''t use several of the functions of the higher end PIXMAs such as directly printing from the camera (it''s best to format the card after a day of shooting), and my primary printer is still a 17 year old black and white HP LaserJet. But, I wanted this printer as a spare for that inevitable day when I''ll need a printer for text, billing, and such. Until that day, I''ll have leftover black cartridges, and will have spent a small fortune on the cyan, magenta, and yellow which come to about $38 for the three, the same price as getting the black thrown in.
I bought the printer with what I figured was a year''s supply of ink. Well, the first thing I notices was that the cartridges are 25% smaller than the same Canon 150''s, and the 150''s don''t fit this printer. I''ve often said that the old bumper sticker, "Whoever dies with the most toys wins," is inaccurate. Actually, the one who "wins" is the one who dies just as the last cartridge runs out of ink, and you also get to miss the last dentist appointment that week. Well, it''s never going to happen, and we''ll just face the fact that we''re helping the economy by having all odd ink cartridges that have no other use and will leave a carbon and cyan, and yellow, and magenta "footprints" in the ecology of our world.
A nice feature is that the cartridge lights up when it''s running out of ink. It''s a little disconcerting when three of the four are lit like it was Christmas all over again, but it it''s good to know which one needs replacing without having to read which color is which.
Seriously, the printer is fast, convenient, and I prefer the wired rather than the wireless printers to maintain the speed and to avoid problems with home networks which can lose their signal in the middle of an 8x10 high res photo. Fair warning: I bought a pack of 100 4x6 photo paper so that my wife could have "hard copy" prints of the grandkids. I don''t use Canon''s software, but something similar. And, since it was Christmas (and birthday) time around here, the pack of 100 (especially set on multiple and batch printing) lasted ... maybe 15 minutes.
IF you use Canon''s high glossy photo paper which in most cases I do recommend either separate the photos individually and let them dry, or leave them in the tray for 15-20 minutes. With 8x10''s it''s best left overnight to make certain that they are dry. HP paper dries faster, and both work find with this printer.
I also found that the 4700 will "conserve" print if you don''t check the "Highest Quality" box in the properties before printing. It''ll save 20-30% of the ink. However, there are some photos where you just have to have long-lasting, high quality photos. I like to print out prize-winning photos (as well as a few wedding pix), and noted that I might get 15 8x10s from these really small cartridges. (See examples of some photos which require this at the free site, . Some of the scenics, and even one of a colorful kestrel an take an enormous amount of ink. Sooooo, the alternative is to really think about which photos you want for an album that you may never look at again.)
By the way, plain black and white print is extremely fast once the document is in the queue, and here''s a plus that very few have thought of: the Canon iP4700 can be stopped in mid-print, quickly and easily. If you change your mind or see an error, one click and the printer stops printing. This is my 4th non-LaserJet printer, and by far my favorite. Let''s hope it doesn''t break the bank.

My trusty Pixma iP5200 bit the dust a few weeks ago due to an unknown problem. It always functioned well, and was very reliable and produced excellent results. I depended on it for all my regular printing, especially the hidden feature for printing on CD/DVD discs. They came out beautifully in about 30 seconds. It was time to move on and upgrade. Or so I thought.First, I had to wonder why Canon produced the Pixma iP5200 several years before the new iP4700 came along. What''s up with that?! Nevermind. I went ahead and ordered the 4700. After receiving it and setting up, I discovered several troubling things. I noticed it takes forever to start up when you send it a print job. Several minutes at least, all the while spewing wasted ink during way too many cleaning cycles. And if the unit wasn''t already turned on, it was reported as Offline by the computer and has to be manually powered on, not very user-friendly!
To add insult to injury, Canon doesn''t seem to be getting paid enough for their ink cartridges, and so, to improve revenues, has reduced the newer CLI-221 cartridge capacity to a mere 9 mL of ink, and drained the PGI-220 to only 19 mL. The older CLI-8''s had 13.6 mL in them, and the PGI-5 Bk had 26 mL! That''s over 30% less ink you are paying the same amount of money for, and the printer goes through more cleaning cycles than it''s predecessors did. You do the math!
The last straw for me was finding out that the printer does not print CD/DVD discs. This was a very important feature to me. Units sold in Europe are endowed with this capability as a standard feature. I was able to utilize the hidden feature in my previous iP5200 by reprogramming it for Euro mode, and using CDLabelPrint (which, by the way, works wonderfully and can print all the way to the 17mm center hole!).
Bottom line, I ended up selling the printer 1 week after purchasing it to a friend who did not need the CD/DVD printing feature, and acquiring a Canon iP4500 legacy printer (the very last model produced which does CD/DVD printing, now sadly discontinued).
Beware of this unit''s limitations. It will print very high quality photos, and does fast and crisp text. However, your consumables costs for ink are going to much higher (unless you know how to refill using quality inks), and the issues with no CD/DVD option and refusing to print from a power-off state pushed it over the edge for me.

My old Canon i960 was dying, and it was time to purchase a new printer. After loads of research, I chose the Pixma ip4700...and it completely lived up to the high expectations I have for Canon photo printers. Prints are crisp and colors are fantastic. Plus, technology has improved so much since I last purchased a printer--dpi is better, and print speed is much, much faster than my old i960. For around $100, you can''t go wrong. People are always amazed when they see prints I make on Canon printers...the quality rivals and possible even surpasses print labs.

This simple little device saves a lot of time. It works from most major programs, but I find a quick copy & paste into the DYMO Label program is just as quick.
Labels print in a second or two after hitting the print button (use the Preferences to bypass the Print Command Window altogether, BTW). This saves a lot of time (and cost) in regards to full-sheet Avery-type labeling.
I''ve only played around with the large format Shipping Labels (DYMO 30256, 2 5/16 x 4) but there''s a wealth of sizes and shapes available.
Images as well as text print sharp, depending on format of the image. I''ve done all sorts of client labels as well using their labels for them; they''re all quite happy with the quality and I believe more than one has purchased one of these.
The only problem I''ve come across is address book saving; I can''t seem to get it to save an address. I''m probably missing something but, as mentioned above, it''s just as easy to do a quick copy & paste, for instance, from OS 10''s own Address Book (which would seem to be the ideal program for DYMO to tie into).

This specialized label printer is simple to set up, easy to use, and takes up very little space on the desk highly recommended.A few cautionary notes:
1. when printing from Outlook the program only recognizes business addresses
2. the thermal printing labels you must use with this printer aren''t exactly cheap
3. the template provided for use in Word reinstalls itself by modifying the default document template each time you open Word, which is annoying if you have Word set to notify you before saving the default template.
Otherwise I am completely satisfied with this printer and expect to use it for many years.

I''ve owned a laser printer since the first HP IIP came out almost 15 years ago. It''s always been handy to print labels for letters, packages, etc. on my laser printer. However, I''ve always had to use a whole sheet of labels to print just one and then reuse the sheet. What a mess. This product ends those problems! Hi,I have a Powermac G4 and a powerbook + an airport express.
This thing is great, it is plugged into the powermac. I just selected "share printers" from the System Settings menu.
When we want to print a label we can do it from either computer in seconds. The Dymo software works well on the mac and we can print directly from address book.
Also, I like the fact that it does not take a print cartridge, so i dont know how long it will last, but I''ve been using mine over a year with no problem.
If you are kind of obsessive about having all of your file folders organized and labeled neatly, this is the printer for you. It''s very fast (about twice as fast as my old LabelWriter 300, which finally wore out after about 2-3 years of use). It does work, you will enjoy using it.

If you are like me and only print documents for personal use, than this is the better value compared to the color cartridge. I bought my HP 6940 on an amazing on-line special/blowout deal (forty bucks with shipping brand new) after seeing the replacement cartridge for my older (and worn out) HP printer was MORE than a brand new printer, shipping included.

oh .... it did not arrive in a box as pictured. it was just a regular shipping bag via US mail and inside was the cartridge in a professionally looking sealed plastic printer ink cartridge. There was a protective transparent sticker across the print head (just like all brand new ink cartridges) and couldn''t be happier (one less box to recycle).I can''t believe that a company would send an expired item. Portable Guy was the company that sent me 2 HP 96 Large Black Ink Cartridges. They were already expired 3 months ago. And I don''t accept explanations that they MAY be good for any time past the date. The ink cartridge works great but beware -the expiration date was Feb 2010 and I bought it in Nov 2009. That will probably be fine for me but may not be for someone who doesn''t print very frequently. Just something to keep in mind.

Two Important Tips: 1) When installing a new roll of labels, there will be some sticky residue left from the glue put there to keep the spool from unraveling. Peel off the label with the sticky stuff on it before feeding it through your printer to prevent the residue getting on the paper feed roller. If the glue gets on the roller, it is likely to cause paper jams. 2) This printer uses thermal paper, not ink. The labels are best used for shipping, or things that require temporary labeling (less than six months). These labels WILL fade after time, and will fade very quickly if left in direct sunlight or in an overly hot environment. This is not a shortcoming of this printer, but of thermal paper technology in general. If you are looking to use this for long term labeling, I would recommend using a different labeler like a Brother P-Touch.
UPDATE: This first one of these worked so well at work, I have purchased a second one for home and added a USB scale to each. Very Very happy with this purchase. Highly recommended!

On Dymo''s and Endicia''s web site, they made sure to point out that I could print postage from home for FREE and expressly indicated "no monthly fees." Again, I was very excited. I''m just a casual shipper -couple packages a year, so a monthly fee (like with Stamps.com) is not worth it in the slightest. Plus, a lot of the stuff you can do for free already anyway; just not First Class stamps.So first I''ll cover unboxing and setup: it was breeze except for some sticky labels. Instead of using the CD that came with the printer, I always download the latest version from the web. That installed very quickly and painlessly. Then, I connected the printer and followed the Quick Start guide which was surprisingly well written. I installed the address labels first and completed that in under 30 seconds! Moved onto the stamp labels which proved to be a little trickier. The labels kept feeding in crookedly. The first time I pulled it out, the label peeled off inside the printer and I couldn''t get it out. I called tech support and to my surprise, the designers thought about this already and the front panel pops right off easily and the print mechanism separates in two places to get the labels out from where ever they are stuck! AWESOME! I finally figured out that the reason they were feeding crookedly was because of the glue leftover from the sticker that held the roll together. So, throw away the first two labels and you''ll be fine. Creating the Endicia account was also quick and easy as well as the Endicia software installation.
Now onto the not-so-good...
I attempted to print my first First Class stamp -$0.08 to make up the difference of an old $0.37 stamp. I played around in the software for a while and could not figure out where to type "0.08." I chatted with Endicia support and they told me that the "free" account only permits a small subset of USPS postage. $0.45 and $0.65 first class stamps, postcards, additional postage of $0.01, and flat rate postage for packages. In order to print an $0.08 stamp, I would need a paid account at a minimum of $9.95/mo. At first, I didn''t believe this. All their web site talked about was being able to print postage at home for free. Nothing about restrictions. Not even footnotes, asterisks, or fine print. Well, turns out it''s true. So, I''m returning everything to Amazon (who is awesome at returns by the way).
Bottom line:
Great printer and well-thought-out design. DECEIVING ADVERTISEMENT. The only "FREE" postage you can print is the same stuff you can do for free without the printer: buy First Class stamps (any Walmart or other grocery store) and print Flat Rate postage (you can do that via USPS.com). Even PayPal allows you to print First Class Parcel and Media Mail postage on their site for FREE to a regular printer or a label printer (although not this one yet).
Suggestion for Dymo/Endicia:
Please don''t misunderstand, I''m not unreasonable. I fully expected there to be some kind of limit on the free account like: you can''t print more than $500/mo or something like that. You have to have something that prevents abuse or use by a business that does a lot of shipping. But having what you''ve done is simply unforgivable.
I would suggest that you change your free account to have a monthly or annual limit of some sort. Something to separate the personal/casual shipper from the business users. Granted very small businesses would fall under the $500/mo idea, but that should be just fine (IMHO) -they are starting out anyway, why burden them with more expenses? It''s really a good business plan anyway. Get someone in on a free limited spend account and as their shipping needs grow, they''re already in with you and you get the business because that''s what they''re already used to and like.

As they have been breaking, I have been replacing them with this new 450 model.The main difference is that these new 450''s print much faster with virtually no pause when printing multiple labels. I recently purchased the Dymo Labelwriter 450 Twin Turbo wondering if I really should have invested the money. I had been looking at it for over two years and it went on sale. My wife and I had been preparing sheet labels for our daughter''s wedding on the laser printer and it became too expensive and took too long. This little jewel has been one of my best investments! It printed everything in less time than it took me just to feed the sheets using the laser printer, printed them in an easy to peel format (no time wasted as with the laser printer), and I was able to print directly from a database. The merge label option in the Dymo software made it easier than using Excel and Word to merge the labels and offered more control over the results! You can set the printer to print only the screen shot or the entire database.I should have bought this when I first started looking at it. The roll labels actually work out cheaper, faster, and of better quality than the laser sheets. One label or multiple labels-nothing beats this little device. On sheet labels laser sheets are already higher priced than ink jet because they must be made to endure more heat. Our time spent labeling the envelopes was 25% of what it had taken using the printer sheets. Also, you can load both sides of the Twin Turbo and print from both at the same time for more speed. My wife did not call this little wonder a toy! Buy ityou will not regret it.
