I was making custom mini-helmets for my family, turning their fantasy football team logos into helmets, and I was looking for a decal paper to use. Being that the paper was fairly expensive, I wanted to make sure I was very careful and followed the instructions exactly. Each time I tried to use one of the decals I made, the decal would have tiny white spots all over it and would tear very easily. I am extremely disappointed in this product. And unfortunately, I won''t be able to surprise my family for Christmas. I am unsure of other alternatives for decal paper, but I would not and can not recommend this product to anyone. Also, if you do decide to purchase this product, it is much cheaper directly from the manufacturer (something I wish I looked up before).

All of our PC''s are very new and run Windows 7 with MS Office 2010. I had the worst time getting the editing software to load and when it finally loaded it crashed. The Brother tech support kept referring me back to their web site for answers. They were absolutley no help at all. In the end I had to uninstall Office 2010 and load it after the Brother software. It was a shot in the dark but thank God that worked. If I could have sent it back I would have! The machine works fine but the software is what makes it work and it has issues.

Works well. I have it hooked in to our network and everyone can print to it through Terminal Services, as advertised. The software that comes with it is hoaky at best. Labels print, but in the ''snap mode'' where you can just copy and paste an address to get a quick label, I can''t figure out how to change the font/typeset on the labels. I wish it worked with some other choices for postage too. But for an address label printer, it''s just fine.

Labels don''t get any easier than this. Well worth it even for only a few labels a year. Simple to set up and versatile BUT you cannot use BOTH wired Ethernet and wireless at the same time. You have to pick one or the other at setup time.

Feeding new rolls also very simple. Takes even less skill than writing your name in the snow.

I got this printer to connect to the company''s iPad to print Guests Badges. However, the only app on iPad that could print to this printer is Brother App. Since this printer doesn''t support AirPrint, no other apps could communicate with it. I had to return it for this reason

Brother Home and Office Labeler
  • One-touch keys - quickly access fonts, symbols, frames and patterns

  • 8 professional fonts for label variety
  • Uses Laminated, "TZe" Tapes up to 12mm wide - great for indoor or outdoor use
  • Easy-access memory, store up to 30 "Favorite" labels

I bought this item to help me reorganize my home filing cabinet and other documents. Having a printed-out label instead of a hand-written one helps a lot more than I thought it would. It''s great to be able to print them as I need them, instead of waiting until I have enough to do a batch job through my computer printer.

I chose this labeler instead of others because of the price and ease of use, and I''m happy with my purchase. Even though I only use one style, this labeler has a variety of fonts and styles in case I ever need them. There are also a bunch of pictograms and borders that can be used to decorate the labels.

It doesn''t take up much room in a drawer and its desk footprint is pretty small. It''s a bit too bulky to carry around on the job, so consider your needs before buying.

The only downsides I''ve come across are that it uses 6 AAA batteries, which can get expensive. There is an AC adapter available for it, although I think any 9V AC adapter from an electronics store should do the trick please correct me if I''m wrong on this.

Second, when printing labels, there seems to be a lot of extra room in the margins, which is wasteful considering how expensive the tapes can be. I''ve looked at a lot of labelers and they all seem to have this issue. The workaround I use is to set the margins as small as possible, then set it to "Chain Print" and do as many at the same time as I can.

I bought mine from an office supply store, and I see that it''s a bit cheaper to buy it through Amazon. The refill tapes are also a lot cheaper through Amazon. I''m thinking of buying a second one of these for my office.

It is a nice unit but Brother is definitely schemed to make money off you in the long run. The labeler produce 1" margin minimum for everytime you print a label. This 1" is in addition to the so call "narrow" margin with your text. I call Brother and they indicate this was part of the design and mistated this description by using narrow margin. The 1" extra margin cannot be eliminated! If you print 12 labels, say bye bye to 12" of your blank label. If you have extra cash then buy more labels from brother. Even with my extra cash, I will not be wasteful. Boycott Brother labels maker and buy other brand instead like DYMO. I am returning my unit.

I purchased this to help label the cables and switches on my entertainment center. I had a few assorted 9-12 volt AC adapters that seemed compatible and thought I would try them with this unit instead of using batteries. The unit would not turn on with any of them, I am not sure if they just didn''t have a good connection or if they were no longer working. So, I purchased the 6 AAA batteries needed and set to work. The labels came out sharp and looked very nice. The font and styles are very easy to set and the unit functions quite well. I am very happy with the purchase and look forward to using it again.

While the printer works fine and is priced right the overuse of tape is inexcusable. Basically it leaves a huge space before the printing and a huge space after this has 3 effects

1) more than doubles to triples your tape usage which costs more $$$ to use (also lines Mr Brother''s pockets)

2) means that you have to go back afterwards with scissors and cut the label so that it is not ridiculously large this is a big waste of time and means that if you are walking around making labels (as I do) you must carry scissors

3) If you believe that we live in a world of scarce resources, isn''t this just plain wasteful?

I hope the people at Brother read this review.

Apparently, they think they have a smart system to sell more tape/ink by leaving a one inch space on both ends of each label. This creates a giant 2 inches of extra space on each label you print. You cannot change the margin to less than 1 inch.

Not only do you have to buy more labels over time, but it makes the label making process time consuming and cumbersome. You have to manually trim each label to get it to fit on a standard file folder or to suit other purposes. When you''re in the middle of a project, you''ll often need to make a lot of labels. This aspect defeats the purpose of getting a label maker to help you make labels efficiently.

The reality is that this wasteful business strategy is probably not profitable for Brother because I took the thing back to the store and got my money back. Now I won''t be buying ANY labels from Brother in the future. There are several other reviewers on this site that did the same.

Plus, these negative reviews are not helping Brother sell label makers to new customers.

I bought a Dymo LabelManager 280 instead and found the margin to be more reasonable.

The other thing that this label maker needs is an included AC adapter. The one they sell costs $20 which almost doubles the label maker''s cost. You''ll want an AC adapter because putting, "get batteries" on your task list every time you want to use the label maker for a project is also counter-productive. For me, I bought a label maker to increase productivity, not add more hassles.

If Brother would correct these two easy things, this would be a nice label maker.

I used this to build a custom POS system for a client/friend of mine. It was about 4-6 months ago or so and he uses it daily in his shop and I have not heard from him since I 1st installed it; its a good device for the price. Not a lot of options; and the scripting is not really following any standards; but once you get it going it will work well.

This product did not work with windows 8. The instructions are a very bad translation that were not helpful at all. I even went through all of the other comments and tried some of the methods other people used to get this POS working, but to no avail. After wasting countless hours and getting completely frustrated, I decided it was time to return this item. With amazon the return was the best thing about this whole purchase. Do yourself a favor and be cautious if you want this product, and also save the boxes for shipping it back.

HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One Printer

HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One Printer
  • Color print, copy, scan, and fax
  • Laser quality speed, up to 7 ppm Black/7 ppm Color, maximum 32 ppm black/31 ppm color
  • Built-in Ethernet networking
  • 2-line text LCD display
  • 35-sheet automatic document feeder

Don''t bother using the disks that came with the printer. Better to go online at the hp site and download the driver software to this model.

I went to the HP site (per one reviewer''s suggestion) and installed the smallest "for IT professionals only" version (I''m still using XP OS) and found I could not use the scan function with that slimmed-down driver. As some users have noted, the scan function breaks a bug in the software. (I discovered the web scan feature just enter the printer''s IP address into the browser url bar. Many thanks to the helpful customer who commented on my review.)

Use the custom install option (uncheck the Photosmart, HP Purchasing junkware). To disable the incessant looping Update nag message popup after reboot, I deleted the HP Update application (via Add/Remove utility) after installing the driver. I agree HP software is rather crappy and bloated but the HP printers have been more reliable than other brands I''ve used. I bought the 6500 to replace my 6 year old HP PSC 1210 that died after years of heavy use. Before that, I bought the HP Deskjet 500 that still works after 20 years. I hope this machine lasts awhile, as well.

I''m surprised this newer-model printer isn''t faster than my old printer (equally noisy to my 1210) but the scanner is improved more adjustment options, decent resolution. I wanted the flatbed copying and sheet feeder capabilities for my next multi-function machine and this one does the job adequately.

Had a power outage recently and was concerned that since I didn''t power off via the button on the printer, it might screw up the settings.. but there was no issue. It worked fine after power was restored, without me having to make any adjustments. Also, if you don''t want to wait for the printer to warm up and print heads cleaned every time at startup, just leave the machine on all the time.

To have the ink cartridges last longer, I set the print resolution to "Fast Draft" for most of my projects.

Addendum (5/16/10): Ignore the "empty cartridge" alert on the machine. The final warning will stop the print jobs from proceeding. Just take that ink cartridge out and re-install it back into the machine. This will override the "out of ink" status. You''ll get at least another 20 pages before the ink cartridge is actually empty.

Update (7/16/11): I still have this HP All-in-One and found several refill kit vendors to replace the ink for both the slim and XL sized cartridges.

The kits are sold on Amazon Inktec color set or black refill sold separately. Also, there''s the good-valued 600ml color & black combo ink refill kit. Links on reviews get blocked so do a search on Amazon for "Inktec refill HP 920XL" and "600 ml refill hp 920 XL" to find those items.

Overall print quality is excellent. Price is good also.

Some points of interest:

1. When setting up the network printer I ran into a few snags and no two installs followed the same dialogue. It took 2-3 hours to set up 4 computers on our network.

2. The print cartridge empty light came on with 25-100 pages remaining. I typically use Fast Draft as a default and keep printing until ink ran out.

3. Text is regularly cut off from the last 1/2 line or so at the bottom of a page -seems to be a margin problem that floats around. Adjusting the footer and body margins sometimes, not always, corrects the problem. Print Preview always looks fine. I''m using Word 2007 same problem occurs in previous versions of Word. Work around is to create a PDF and print the PDF -no joke! Several websites indicate that this is a problem with no real fix/patch available.

4. The printer is extremely noisy and has a habit of cleaning itself regularly. Hmmmm!

Say it ain''t so!

I''ve had this printer for about a month now, and have printed and scanned several documents (have not tested the fax as I do not have a home landline).

Overall, I am pleased with the printer. The print quality, and speed are very good and the scanning couldn''t be easier. The only small complaints I have about it are 1 it''s a bit noisy when it prints (and subsequently aligns the print after after each printing). In fact, when my wife sent something to the printer across the network from another room, my 2 year old was near the printer and it scared the dickens out of him!

The other drawback was (and I''ll readily admit I''m no IT expert) I was unable to get the printer to install without using the HP CD that installs all kinds of extra crap I did not want on my machine.

Anyway, despite some things I do not like, I am very happy with this printer.

Want HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One Printer Discount?

I just installed the printer/fax/scanner/copier in just over 4 hours. I know a fair amount about computers and printer installation, so I assume my difficulties were not user error. To be short, the main problems were:

_Do not_ use the installation CD. I tried to install the information on the CD, and the scanner would not fully work. Per a suggestion of another reviewer, I went to the HP.com and installed the software directly from there (Go to hp.com > select "support & drivers" > select "download drivers and software" > for product type "officejet 6500" > select your type of printer (mine was E709a) > select your operating system (mine is Vista) > then select "HP Officejet Full Feature Software and Driver (English Only). Then follow the instructions from there.

Unless you have a dedicated fax phone line (one land line for phone calls, one land line for a fax), you MUST be at your machine to receive an incoming fax. The caveat here is if your phone service has some type of fax-ring that you can purchase, but I did not care to do this. This is frustrating, as this new Officejet 6500 is replacing my 10-year-old fax machine which has the capability to receive incoming faxes when I am not at home. I do not understand why technology that existed 10 years ago no longer exists now.

I have the printer up and running, and the scanner, fax, printer and copier all work (that is, after I uninstalled the CD software and reinstalled the software from hp.com). I am frustrated with how much effort it took to get this up and running, and frustrated that I have to be present for the fax machine, but it seems to be working well.

Hence have patience when installing! (and install from hp.com!)

So far it''s been a very solid printer. It''s a little tall, and it''s "draft" printing still uses too much ink compared to other brands on the market, but when it comes to printing quality letters, and images it''s a solid printer.

Be forwarned however, that it is a noisey printer, on draft print it''s noisey from the paper being fed through the machine and then from the paper being ejected onto the tray, it''s done with such force that the paper will fly off the paper tray if you have not lifted the trailing edge of the output paper tray lip up, which you are supposed to do. But it''s also noisey after every document (document can be 1 page or 100 pages) is printed in that it seems to re-align the print heads and so the print basket goes moving back and forth along the print line, popping up and down here and there and just generally makes some noise while doing it.

Now, if you need a printer that is actually going to be very productive in that you''ve got an office staff that is printing all day, and prints document after document (like we do here) then this is probably not the printer for you. You see after each document it does that print head aligning thing and during this time the printer is unusable, it can''t print the next document until it''s done doing whatever it is doing with the print head moving back and forth on the print line.

This is a shame for us as when we are working, we are printing 1 and 2 page documents continuously, one after the other, I will print a document, submit the document electronically, then fill out another document and send it to the printer where it has to wait for the printer to get ready again, then print it. On and on we go on a daily basis, and the printer eventually falls behind and we have to end up corolating the printed documents with the submission informaiton page that we have to put them together instead of being able to just stack them on the output paper tray.

So while I realize that not everybody needs the printer to the extreme that we do here at the office, is why it''s still rated a 4 in my opinion, because for a home printer, this is really a great printer if you don''t mind the noise and is only made better by it''s big brother printer that has the wireless option. For the price that we paid for this offices room of printers (18 of them) at $119 each, it''s still a solid buy even if the workers do have to corolate the pages at the end of the day.

Price of Ink:

The Ink is high, for a XL cartridge of black it''s about $35.00 to $40.00 at the local big box office stores. We use to run all brother printers where the ink cartridges could be easily filled with just a hole being drilled into the cartridge, a syringe and the ink bought at local big box office supply stores for a fraction of the cost of a new cartridge. We could refill the brother cartridges hundreds of times without problems. The HP from what I''ve been reading can be filled between 2 times and 16 times before some mechanism in it signals to the printer that it''s empty even when it''s full, so this is a big cost concern when each ink is $15.00 for the regular size and the printer uses so much of it even in draft mode.

As far as setup goes, the first time I ran the setup off the included CD, the setup did fail. It took aproximately 20 minutes to get to the failure point. The program suggested that I reboot the computer and try again as a fix for this. I did as instructed and rebooted the computer when informed to do so, and when the computer came back online I re ran the setup from the included cd and it went through in about 10 minutes or so and fully installed the software with no further hitches. We don''t generally reboot this particular computer as it also runs our phone lines as well as being one of the offices main workhorses, but a reboot did allow the included software to be installed without further incident.

There is one last thing that I should mention. If you have a digital camera that uses CF memory cards (like our Nikon cameras do), then consider that this printer does NOT have a CF memory card slot. They have chosen to include MS, sd, xd etc but not CF cards for some reason which is just a shame, now we''re back to getting the images to the printer the long about way of doing it through the computer since this printer has no CF memory card slot to use.

Actually, there is one more thing that I should mention, when printing documents in draft mode it *might* cut off part of the text at the bottom of the page. When this has happened to me, I switch to the general every day printing option and it prints all of the text as it should. My only guess on this is that the printer ejects the paper so fast in draft mode that the printer can''t print the bottom portion of the document. It doesn''t happen every time, but it does happen once in a while.

If anybody knows of instructions on how to refill the OfficeJet 6500''s cartridges please comment and let me know as I''d really like to go back to saving money by refilling the ink cartridges again, instead of printing our own documents at almost the same cost as taking them to the local printmart store when we have to buy new cartridges for this 6500 each time they run dry.

Update: We''ve now found out that these printers use a whole lot more ink than we had planned on. On one particular printer (assume the rest of them are the same here in the office) we''ve found that it uses up the initial black ink cartridge in less than 300 pages. Those pages are not even a 5% coverage and have always used the draft printing mode. I see now why they sell the XL cartridges, the smaller cartridges just don''t have enough ink in them to make this printer an "office" (like OfficeJet) printer. It''s better suited for a home printer and we are thinking about returning the whole lot of them and going back to brother printers. Even with all the faults of a brother printer at least we can keep our ink prices to a reasonable level for our daily black only text only print jobs.

There are suggestioons, including on Amazon.com that the P-330 and a Sony Digital Camera that uses 3.5" floppy disks are compatible. To a limited extemt this may be true, but direct use is not possible as the P-330 only takes the smaller Smart Media disk. It would appear one would be well advised to use a Sony printer that can directly receive the 3.5" floppy disk; otherwise one of the feature attractions of a printer is defeated. The one star rating is only in connection with a Sony digital camera.

First, the bad news:

If "printing", for you, means printing out 200 pages in a day, then this printer isn''t going to be for you. The cartridge (specifically, the black) probably wouldn''t hold out too long, and the printer would end up costing you money. The cartridges aren''t cheap.

Now, the good news:

For those of us with light printing needs:

the ocassional picture

maps from a driving directions site

receipt from an online purchase

paper versions of your taxes

If those are your needs, this printer will serve you well. It''s very inexpensive, very quick, and has adequate color. And while the cartridges aren''t big, they are more than adequate for the kinds of tasks listed above. I''ve had mine for over a month and the black cartridge isn''t even 1/4 empty. If you''re a light user, and you don''t mind spending $20 every (I''m guessing) 6 months or so, this is probably a great printer for you.

On the other hand, if you''re an author who likes to print out his or her 500-page manuscript several times a month, you might want to look elsewhere for a printer that takes a larger cartridge.

Like the other poster said, 1 star is TOO GENEROUS.

I dont even know what it wants, I bought cheap paper at first coz I print useless stuff like lyrics and memos. SO i bought expensive paper and it still says paper jam. I want to cry right now. I just wasted 40 bucks on something I really wanna beat up with a hammer or run over w/ a truck. I am not sure if I can still return it and I am afraid of selling it.

Please dont buy it. It was a shame that I didnt check reviews prior to purchase, I really trusted HP.

This printer is not worth the cheap price. The ink doesnt last at all. I bought a brand new black ink cartridge to print a thesis paper and got 30 pages printed and the ink ran out. Also it kept crashing after printing 3 pages, just stopped and acted like the print job was done. So, I had to print it one page at a time. What a waste of money.

I researched this printer before buying it and the reviews said it was good for low volume printing and the output quality was good. It was purchased for my son to use at college for printing reports and papers.

Low volume is an understatement, the ink cartridges only hold 5 ml of ink and cost in the neighborhood of $15. The cartridges for my older HP932 printer hold about 19 ml and go for about $30.

Upon arrival, the sealed box contained no power cord. I had to call HP to have them send me one. To their credit, I will say that their support staff was friendly and helpful.

It also tends to jam all the time.

My son stopped trying to use it altogether.

I wouldn''t recommend it.

I regret buying this printer. I can only feed one page at a time to avoid paper jams, whether using recycled or new paper. I really don''t print that much and this is the most I''ve ever spent on ink. The print quality isn''t even that great. It was a waste of money.

We bought the Epson brand canvas as well as this one and found them to be comparable although the Epson is supposed to hold up better to stretching and we have not done that to either. Good quality for transferring prints to canvas for a different look.

This paper works wonderfully in my printer (a Canon I860). This is no wrinkly lightweight paper that feels cheap to the touch. The ink on the printed page looks crisp and even on this smooth, heavyweight paper. Gives a very professional appearance. I''ll probably buy this paper again from Amazon rather than trudge down to Office *** or Staples to buy the bargain stuff.

The QL710W label printer combines an intuitive and stable software suite, with excellent print quality and speed, and wireless connectivity resulting in a full featured professional grade label printer for the home or home office.

What''s to like:

[1] Installation and setup are fairly straightforward

[2] The accompanying software suite is very intuitive, stable, and full featured.

[3] This printer writes with heat on thermal paper as a result you will never have to worry about ink.

[4] Excellent print quality with clear text and graphics. Its palette is a fairly limited gray-scale, so clean high contrast images work best.

[5] Well written documentation. In addition to a printed Quick Setup guide, you get PDF guides for its software and for networking.

[6] It is solidly built, and looks sleek and professional.

Setup:

#####

I setup the QL710W on a Windows 7 x64 bit Core i7 based machine with 6GB RAM, and it worked without fuss or incident.

Set up consists of installing a label roll and threading the tape to an output slot. The software is comprised of a contact manager, a free form graphical label editor, and printer drivers. Once the drivers are installed, you have two options when connecting to this printer:

1. you can connect it directly to your computer via a USB cable, or

2. you can use it as a wireless printer. To configure it with your network''s SSID and passphrase, you must either use Wifi Protected Setup (WPS, not advisable due to security concerns), or you must use the USB cable. I used the latter, and the connection was established in a couple of minutes.

What''s really cool for a techie nerd like me?

Once the QL710W is up and running on your network, you can talk to it using a web based interface. Simply navigate to it using an internal IP address (the one assigned by your router''s DHCP server)!

How cool is that?

Software Suite:

###########

The QL710W does not skimp on its software offering:

1. P-touch Editor 5 a free-form label editor.

You pick a label size (with choices such as Standard/Large/Small Address Label, CD/DVD label, 2" Binder spine, etc.), and then go to town with your edits. Among others, you can:

# add and style text (font, size, style) as well as add effects such as shadow, outline, and layouts that are vertical, circular, and curved!

# add images (an assortment of clip art is supplied, and you can always import images from files);

# add screen captures using a SnagIt style interface

# add barcodes from a variety of protocols (UPC-A/E, EAN8/13, ISBN-2, POSTNET, QR Codes, etc.)

# add the calendar for a given month

If that weren''t enough, it can integrate with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook!

Finally, a minimized mode (called Snap mode) lets you capture content via screen shots or drag and drop for later editing.

Suffice it to say that this software is probably worth the sticker price of this unit!

2. P-touch Address Book 1.1 a contact manager

You can manage contact information and print using preset layouts. Of course, if you wish to edit a layout, you are taken immediately to the P-touch Editor, with a full arsenal of tools at your command.

Conclusion:

########

Its older sibling, the QL720NW, adds an Ethernet interface as well as a serial port. However, for general home office use, the QL710W is a sufficiently powerful machine, especially when considering its accompanying software suite. Printing speed in particular is to be seen to be believed.

There''s a lot to like with this well designed printer making it truly a 5-star product.

Happy Printing!

There are 2 ways to use this product on a Mac platform from your OS X machine or your iOS device (iPhone or iPad). I had trouble loading the software from the included disk. The download from the website failed also. I spent 40 minutes on the phone with their terrific customer support person, who was unable to resolve the issue, getting the same results as I did. He deferred to a senior tech, who emailed me that it was probably my machine as there were "no known issues", even on OX 10.8. It''s a new MacBook Air, so probably not, but we''ll see... This needs resolution, whether it''s a fluke issue of mine or a legit issue.

I was able to easily connect my iPhone and iPad via wireless using the free app. It worked so great, that not having the Air working with it was less of an issue.

So, actually 5 stars for the hardware and iOS app. Deducting 2 stars for this unresolved OS X hassle.

The initial set up for the wireless part of this was a little complicated ...but once set up, this worked great. Being able to print labels from the iPad is outstanding and very simple.

Now I admit I''m not doing anything too complex with this label maker. Just printing out informational labels where needed. But setup was easy and the product seems to work very well. I consider it a good value even for my meager uses.
