It looked great, all matte black, square looks, clean line, nice "looking" LCD touch panel, $5 black cartridge.
I purchase this locally in Vancouver and had to exchange several times to get a working one. On initial purchase, the printer would turn on but never finish the boot cycle so I exchange it for another one. After the exchange, the second would not even turn on, exchange again. The third one finally worked but after using the product, I returned it. The printer menu was slow, hard to setup. Download additional printer apps was tedious. Even basic function required separate app to make it friendly to use. Also the WebUI was slow and unresponsive at most time during configuration. Their tech support was literally useless since the first two printer could not even turn on correctly.
Using Mac OS X 10.6.8
The computer software was buggy. The printer drivers seems OK but the firmware update was a POS. It could not update the firmware either thru USB or WiFi or LAN. I had to use a PC to update the firmware
Using iPhone or iPad
First you need to download the app "Lexprint" for printer thru iPhone or iPad. Second, the app will only print pictures or webpages. This is not how Airprint should. It does NOT allow printing from PDF or e-mail....very limiting
Honestly, I support Mac & PC at work and it took me over 2 days to configure this printer properly..two thumbs down!!!
Additionally, this was suppose to replace the Pro905 which had a five year warranty...why does the Pro915 only have one year warranty??
I bought a HP 8500A Plus...setup (networking and setting up send to e-mail SMTP) was done after 15 min.

I bought one of these because we had them at work. Then when the ones at work started to go down and lexmark wanted me to tell them what was wrong with them I told them forget it and had them all removed and trashed they were replaced by anything that wasn''t made by Lexmark. So on to the one at home. It kept losing the connection on my network and would take years to boot up I would have to spend three hours every time I wanted to print something setting it back up again and today it finally lost it all. It read that all of my cartridges were empty then it said it would not communicate with the cartridges. I tried a couple of new ones and still no luck. Their technical support is non existent because they are closed and even when they are open you get someone who can barely speak english and reads from a script. So after finally being done with it i smashed it into as many bits as I could and sent it to rot in the dump. I will never buy another one of their products ever again. I was really hoping that after a year or so...Lexmark would have addressed their massive QA issues lately. Trust me folks, as of this writing, trust the BAD reviews far more than the good ones. I have been fighting with this thing for two days...NOTHING works right on it. The software is a total mess, freezes all the time AFTER all the firmware and drive updates (come on Lexmark, after a year you can''t even update your drivers in the box?). Had to try to set up 3 times before it worked. I STILL can get the wireless to work. This is all with OSX and airports...NO EXCUSE Lexmark...this is just terrible, crappy software all the way around.The printer itself seems ok...but its worthless since I can''t actually get it to do anything.
Their problems extend to their smart app website...which works maybe 10% of the time...the rest of the time everything just times out there.
DO NOT BUY this if you want your sanity. There is NO EXCUSE Lexmark for this printer and software to STILL be this terrible out of the box.
Mine is going back in the box and back to amazon...Lexmark owes me quite a lot of wasted time messing around with this POC...

This printer has good quality print, is fast and convenient. It does everything I''d like when it works, and for that, I would have given it four stars. It''s certainly better than the Epson CX4800 I traded it for. But it has numerous annoying little problems. It''s installed on my network by direct connection to my router via an Ethernet cable. Every now and then, the screen goes blank and can''t be revived. It says "entering sleep mode" for 5 or 10 minutes, but continues to allow printing. Online chat told me to shut the printer off and remove the power module, then turn it back on. That solved the problem, but when it happened again, they told me the same thing. Obviously, doing a cold restart every time the printer locks up isn''t a solution for a network printer that may be some distance from the computer issuing the print command. A second call told me to download and install the latest firmware. I did that, and now the printer never enters "sleep" mode, even overnight, although it''s set to enter sleep mode after 10 minutes. I am not very pleased with this printer. The paper always jams , when it prints the paper does not eject smoothly and gets hung up close to the front causing paper jams . When I put an SD card in the printer to export photos to my computer some of them always get messed up , distorted - they never all export and save properlyThe touch screen sucks too , we don''t need these stupid touch screens on everything , I would prefer the old fashioned buttons
I had a lot of printers over the years . This model is not an improvement over previous Lexmark models.

I share an office with the bookkeeper and she requested a full-size calculator with paper feed, etc. Somehow being the tech person I''m the person people go to if they want to purchase anything remotely technical for the office. So, I set out looking for a nice calculator that was quiet and could withstand heavy "abuse." While I was quite surprised by it''s sized, our bookkeeper loves it and I love it because it is much quieter than any similar calculator. I would definitely recommend it.Relatively quiet to previous calculators. Good dark print, easy to read. Built solid. However, these are my impressions during the first week.

I have been using HP printers almost exclusively for over 20 years but my last three HP Printers have been getting progressively worse my last one the HP 6500A was an absolute piece of junk and I am pretty sure it will be my LAST HP product. After a few weeks of research on what printer to move to and considering several Canon, Brother and Epson products I decided that the Epson 845 was probably the printer for me and boy was I RIGHT! I''ve had this printer for a little over 6 weeks and this printer is AMAZING. I paid $199 and see it for $159 now...after using it I''d gladly pay $299.

Speedy this printer is much faster than the HP 6500 and the L7500 that I had before.
Print Quality I never print photos so I can''t comment on that but for business (I work from home) it is great for Powerpoint presentations and contracts. The 2 sided printing is remarkably easy to use and actually works, something that never happened on the HP 6500.
Wireless I have a home office. I and my family all use this printer. I use it for work, my kids for school and college work. This printer joined my wifi nework effortlessly and has given me 0 trouble. Amazingly simpler than my previous HPs and it "warms up" in a fraction of the time my previous HP printers needed.
Mac Compatible I have 5 Macs that use this printer. Using HP products I had just accepted that getting printer drivers working on a Mac required carrying the printer around the house and plugging the printer into the Mac that needed to access it was just part of the "setup process". The Epson 845 was UNBELIEVABLY SIMPLE. All of my Macs (2 iMacs, Macbook Pro, 2 Macbook Airs) all saw the printer on my Wifi network and immediately started working with the printer. I have NEVER had a printer work so well with my Apple Products. It is both Snow Leopard AND Lion compatible.
Screen The instrument panel is amazing. It''s HUGE, easy to see, very intuitive and actually folds away when not in use.
Copier Awesome! My HPs always made "dark" copies this one is almost perfect reproduction. Huge upgrade.

It''s Big This is not a petite printer. I''m not sure how much they could shrink it and keep all the features but it is full figured.
The paper trays and paper guides feel flimsy. The printer is very light despite it''s size but I am worried that I might break one of these trays or the paper guide that catches the paper as it comes out of the printer if I''m not careful. Hasn''t happened but it does worry me. Not sure what you do if this happens.
Bottom line for a home / office printer, especially one shared wirelessly between multiple users this printer is an absolute DREAM! HP I''m never coming back.

Still using and still LOVE this printer. It''s been over 8 months and the Epson is still the best printer I''ve used in years. Reading other reviews and comments people have sent me there do seem to be two other "weak points" on this printer that I did not note above. I have NOT seen these issues but others are commenting on them. The weak points are 1) I guess you can''t scan without hooking it to your computer with a cable. I don''t do this I use a small Fuji Scansnap for receipts and such and an Epson V500 for photos. But if scanning is big for you this may be an issue. 2) Printing Pictures. Again I have NEVER done this. I send my pictures out to a service for printing (I use Apple) so I have no idea if it is a good photo printer or not.
PROs I just can''t get over how well this printer works wirelessly. I would have thrown my HPs out years ago if I knew life could be this simple! I have NEVER had to reenter my wifi passwords or network settings. I did it once and that was it. Also my niece and some of my daughter''s friends have needed to print here. It was incredibly simple for them to find, install the driver, and print from my printer once I gave them my wifi password.
Bottom Line I would buy this pinter again in a heartbeat!

I obtained this printer to replace my Canon PIXMA MP460 All-In-One Photo Printer (1449B002), which worked well enough, but didn''t have faxing capabilities or other advanced features (such as networking).Networking:
The WorkForce 845 is a solid all-in-one device. Not only can it network (give multiple computers the ability to connect to it at the same time), but there are two different ways to do so. Ethernet (plugs directly into your router), and Wi-Fi (can wireless connect to the router to avoid lengthy/messy cords)--there is also the traditional USB option (which is generally used to hookup one computer). In an office environment, the capability to network is invaluable.
Ink vs. Toner alternatives:
Speaking of an office environment, EPSON boasts that this printer is a great alternative to laser printers. At the time of this review, it looks like ink replacements will cost around $70 (color and black). On a HP Laserjet CM1415FNW, the full toner kit currently costs $254.99. I did come across a third-party toner set for $84.90 (Remanufactured, I believe) which is closer to the price range of the WorkForce 845''s inkjet cartridges. Though met with mixed reviews, the cheaper toner for the HP boasts 2,000 pages for black and 1,300 for color. Whereas the black cartridge for the WorkForce reports a maximum yield of 940 pages with each color cartridge lasting up to 755 pages. Doing the math, the cheaper toner goes further than the inkjet, so the 40% printing savings could be considered a bit skewed when comparing all options. It also means you need to replace the cartridges sooner, which, in a larger office environment, can be a pain.
Something else to consider is that ink smudges when wet, toner does not.
In line with annoyances are inkjet printer heads. One of the reasons I previously bought the Canon Pixma MP460 was because the heads were built into the ink cartridges. That way, if they went bad, I just needed to replace the ink. As a former IT Professional (at a 50+ employee office), I replaced way too many EPSONs because the heads went bad. Unfortunately, like them, the WorkForce 845 has the heads built into the printer, not the cartridges, so the life of the printer is a slight concern for me (with the current cost of printers, it''s not worth paying to have them repaired).
Paper handling:
There are two paper trays. They hold a combined 500 sheets--way more than my old Canon Pixma MP460. You can see how much paper is in each tray without opening them, which is nice.
The size paper that the top tray can hold is LTR, A4, 8x10", A5, 5x7", 4x6" (Photo Paper), 3.5x5", and No.10 & C6 (Envelopes). The bottom tray (tray 2) can only hold LTR, A4, and B5. There''s no manual feed for printer paper, but there''s a manual feed for faxing, copying, and scanning. The size paper allowed for the feed is A4 and LTR/LGL. I like how the feed flap can be closed to keep the dust out when not in use (and it makes the printer look sharp, too).
Printing Photos:
There was no photo printing software included on the install CD (like the Canon Pixma MP460 had). With Microsoft Window''s default picture viewer being very limited [when it comes to printing options], a third-party program is a must (particularly when printing a 4x6 borderless photograph). After hitting up Google, I found where to download EPSON''s "Easy Photo Print" software and installed it (for free--though, it would have been nice for them to have included this on the CD). Unfortunately, after installing, I was only given the option to print in A4 and Letter on the WorkForce 845, not 4x6. So I gave up on that software and went to Photoshop.
Photoshop allowed me to select the first tray (which is the only tray that can hold 4x6 photo paper--I set tray 2 as the default and loaded it with standard 8.5x11 so that my normal printing wouldn''t conflict with my photo printing) and I was able to print borderless without any hiccups. That said, doing one image at a time in Photoshop is way too tedious (and not everyone has a copy of the $700 program. I''m sure there are other free software options out there that would work (like, perhaps, Picasa), but by this time I was done installing programs).
Plugging in devices to the printer:
That, and, I found an even easier way to print photos to the WorkForce 845. Taking a chance, I plugged in my MyTouch 4G phone directly to the USB port [on the printer] thinking that it was long shot for the two devices to speak the same language. Surprisingly, they did! The WorkForce 845 detected the photos on my phone right away. From there it let me select which ones I wanted to print (it actually showed me the full, color photo on the printer screen, too), as well as provided me with some proofing options such as fix red-eye, sharpness, saturation, contrast and brightness. Once I had the image how I wanted it, I simply clicked the print button and presto, it printed on the Photo Paper.
By bypassing the PC, it saved the need for extra software. You can also plug in a Digital Camera, Flash Drive or SD card. Pretty slick. (There are options for xD, MS PRO, and CF too.)
Included Software:
It comes with the drivers (of course), and ABBY FineReader for quick scanning and saving to Word, PDF, Excel, direct to email, etc., which also has an OCR feature (for converting images/scans to editable type). There''s also a FAX utility, Event Manager, and software for quick and easy scanning. You will, however, want another program for printing photos from a computer (as mentioned above).
Conclusion:
Overall, I''m quite happy with this printer. It has all the features I want and looks good too. I particularly like how the display is touch sensitive and can swivel up for ease of use. Installing the software was fairly simple and it even checks the Internet to see if there''s a new firmware update (which there was in my case, and it installed it for me). I do worry about the longevity (as mentioned due to the printer heads), but the price is low enough that I can just replace it if need be (technically, it''s the price of ink, not hardware, that ultimately defines overall cost). I''m not entirely convinced that an inkjet alternative is better than using a toner-based printer, but, that said, I do think this printer is a great option for home offices (or very small business). Midsized to large business should really look into something higher-end.

Epson WorkForce 845 Hands-on-ReviewI just purchased and setup an Epson Workforce 845, and couldn''t be happier with its speed, features, and overall value. In fact, I was surprised by the price on Amazon.com-only $199.95 when I purchased it--because I''m sure I paid more last year for the previous model Epson Workforce 840. That Workforce 840 quickly became the main inkjet printer in my home office, replacing two printers from HP and Canon that were once wired via USB to separate computers, and always running out of ink or needing cleaning. In addition to similar speed and high capacity paper trays and ink cartridges shared by the 840 and 845, wireless connectivity is another key reason I purchased the new 845, which has even more wireless features. With the 840, I was able to "cut the cords" at home, and since then my three teenagers and wife have been printing out their homework and email on the 840 using everything from their laptops to their iPhones.
This time, I got the Workforce 845 just to handle my projects in my office--although when my kids find out they can send me print jobs via the internet using the new Epson Connect feature I''m sure that''s what they''ll do when we run out of paper or ink on the home Workforce 840. Since I''m running a new service business in my area, I needed a printer like the Workforce 845 to print up lots of flyers, handouts, and mailings. Without a doubt, the incredibly fast printing speeds on the Workforce 845 and its dual paper trays (with up to 500 sheet capacity) are going to save me time, while its duplex printing capability will save me money on paper supplies.
Ok, I admit I''m one of those guys that stick flyers and coupons in your mailbox, in store windows, and on your car''s windshield. In my line of work, doing so brings helps to bring in a lot of business, and that''s one of the reasons I specifically chose the Workforce models and their DuraBrite inks. There''s nothing worse than watching my outdoor flyers turn to unreadable, abstract art when it rains--which I often experienced with flyers I made with my old HP and Canon printers. But the black and color inks on posters and flyers made with the Workforce 840 and 845 appear to be waterproof, and even a hard rain doesn''t wreck them. More likely the rainwater will cause the paper to degrade long before the inks.
As for print quality, even at its fast default settings, text is very readable on Workforce 845, with high contrast and good detail. I rarely use it to make photo prints, but occasionally family members use it to make prints directly from their digital camera memory cards on glossy 4x6 paper or on plain paper (the memory card slots handle every type of card we have except for the micro-SD cards in our camera phones, which require an SD adapter). The large 3.5-inch color preview monitor on the printer also makes it easy to adjust photos before printing, or select menu items, quality controls, and utility settings. And unlike full-page photo prints made on plain paper with other brands I''ve owned, the Epson prints are instant dry, and don''t buckle up the paper with extra moisture.
Other features that I''ve found to be well above average on the Workforce 845 are its fast, full-featured flatbed scanner (which rivals many stand-alone scanners for speed, quality, and advanced controls--but doesn''t ship with film holders!) and its related copy speed and quality. The auto document feeder has never jammed on the 840, and it appears to be the exact same mechanism on the 845. The fact that I can operate the printer, scanner, copier, and even the fax from a wifi-connected computer is also pretty amazing.
With the 840''s wifi, I also found it easy to print email and other documents from my iPad 2, but was bummed that I couldn''t do the same with my Droid Incredible phone. Now the latest versions of Epson''s free iPrint app is available for both Apple and Droid operating systems. These allow you to adjust and crop photos if desired, while Epson''s Email Print lets you use any wireless computer, phone, or tablet to send documents and photos to the printer''s Internet address.
The only features I''d like to see improved (besides including film holders for the flatbed as mentioned) are the size and capacity of the ink cartridges. I think a printer destined for office use, and sporting a 500 sheet tray, should come with larger capacity ink cartridges than the Extra-high capacity cartridges available for the 845. That way I''d get a break on ink costs over time. But I''ve got to give Epson credit for including a set of the Extra-High Capacity 127 inks in the printer box, and not skimping on the normal capacity 126 inks or even partially-filled starter inks like those found in other manufacturer''s printer boxes.

After my HP OfficeJet died after 6 1/2 years, I began doing an in-depth analysis of all mid-range All-In-Ones multi-function printers that met my wish list. There was a tie between the Epson Workforce 875, the Canon Pixma line of AIO''s, and the HP AIO''s. I decided to go with the Epson because of the features, the reviews, and the price. It''s only been 4 hours but I''ve decided to return it.The first thing I noticed when I played with the print settings is that the Fast Economy and Economy print quality is so poor that you have to print in Normal mode just to have text you can actually read. On those 1st two modes, the print came out jagged and letters weren''t filled in all the way. I even changed out the paper to see if it printed any better it didn''t.
I then downloaded the Epson i-Print app for my iPhone and printed a picture taken with my new iPhone. I put premium glossy photo paper in the printer and printed five different ways and the pictures came out muddy and with horizontal and vertical lines. There''s no way it could compare to the prints I order from an online digital print company like Shutterfly.
Epson online support advises that users running Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7 that wish to use the SCAN BUTTON on the front of the printer MUST connect to the printer with a USB cable. The whole entire Epson Scan software does NOT work with Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7. (I guess it defeats the whole idea of wireless scanning). Furthermore, the ABBEY FineReader software that is included that converts scanned documents to Editable Text (OCR) is not supported on Mac OS X 10.7 either, contrary to the manufacturer''s representations.

The Epson WorkForce 845 is an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax machine that is suitable for small offices and home businesses. It''s priced right for that market segment and is a fine printer for most tasks that can be thrown at it.Set-up of this printer is nearly painless. It is actually more of a struggle getting the printer out of the box than it is to configure it for use. Once out of the box and on th desk, it requires removing the packing tape (in place to protect the printer during shipping), plugging in the ink cartridges and then waiting the requisite 5 minutes while it primes the cartridges. After this process completes, load the drivers, connect the printer at the right time and then it''s ready to go.
My first order of business was to print a test page and it dutifully cranked out a very clean, crisp print of the Epson test page. There is no banding, no smears and no disjoint lines as I have seen on older Stylus models. This is a big plus right out of the box.
Epson has adopted a standard touch screen model for manipulating their all-in-one printers and this one is no different. Switching between the different modes requires a light tap on the LCD screen to move from printing to copying to scanning, and everything is very logical and straightforward. One thing that surprised me is the printer''s ability to generate ruled papers such as wide ruled classroom paper and even graph paper. It even has the ability to generate note paper with a watermarked image. This is a nice feature, though it''s not one I will personally use.
Print quality is good. As I mentioned above there is no banding and no jagged lines. Photo print resolution is excellent as well, producing frame-suitable prints.
One of the really excellent features of this printer is the ability to connect wirelessly to a network, which makes setting up the printer anywhere very simple. Entering the security key on the screen is a minor inconvenience but it is not absurdly hard.
The printer does a very nice job of duplex printing. It is fast and it''s automatic, not requiring manual intervention.
One thing that has surprised me about this printer, however, is that the print speed is not exceptional. The test page itself took roughly 5-10 seconds to print which may not seem like a lot of time but is noticeably slower than some other printers with which I have worked. It is likely not going to be a show-stopper issue, but it is worth noting. Copy speeds are slower than print speeds as expected but are not unreasonable.
Epson includes the extra-high-capacity cartridges in the box with the printer. This is excellent. Most printers come with "starter" ink packs which don''t last long. From what I can ascertain from Epson''s specs, these should be good for about 500 pages. Time will tell.
The document feeder works well. It is nice to be able to put pages on top of the printer, hit the copy button and have the printer automate the whole process of feeding, copying and collating.
The Epson WorkForce 845 is a nice all-in-one device. It has reasonable print speeds, the output is quality and the list of features is impressive. This one costs a little more than the entry-level printer you''d find at the local electronics store but the features and print quality outweigh that price difference. If you''re looking for a midrange all-in-one, this is a good one to consider.

I stock up on inks only occasionally. The trigger event is when the warning light on the printer for a particular color comes on, and I don''t have that color ready to change. When that happens, I check out what I do have, flesh out what I need to have a complete set including two of light gray, light cyan, and light magenta, and order them all, usually on Amazon. I like genuine HP inks on Amazon because that''s where the price, Amazon Prime free shipping, vendor reliability, and prompt delivery all come together. I need genuine HP inks because I have this printer for studio-quality color prints and I depend on it for my most-invested hobby, and I don''t have the time or patience to deal with cartridges that require color re-calibration or don''t provide the color fidelity that I expect of an 8-ink printer, or that don''t last as long as HP 38 ink cartridges. This Seiko is replacing an old Dymo label printer at work that finally failed after years of use.The new Seiko 440 was priced right at Amazon, looks attractive in Jade & Ivory, and was easy to install. I downloaded the latest Seiko software from the web, it works fine with 64-bit Windows 7 with the printer on a USB port.
POSITIVES:

SOME ISSUES:
Paper loading on the Seiko is more difficult than on Dymo printers, and it''s easy to load the labels so they are not feeding straight. You almost have to be looking directly at the rear of the printer during loading.
Removable front cover plate reveals a platen release lever, which is handy when clearing paper jams, but the front cover requires a lot of force to remove, then it suddenly SNAPS off loudly. Poor design, there should be a spring-loaded button or latch that releases the front cover GRACEFULLY.
Cylindrical cover on top swings-back to reveal the roll of labels underneath. As with the cover plate, too much force is required to UN-SNAP this cover.
Push the front panel power button to toggle between Ready and Standby modes. The problem is that the green READY light looks almost exactly like the yellow STANDBY light. Seiko should have used a better two-color LED lamp. (and no, I am not color-blind!)

I''ve used these printers for years with Windows software at work and home they are mechanically well built and reliable. I was very disappointed, however, when I purchased this device for use with a new MacBook. Compared to the intuitive, clean, simple software interface for the PC, the Mac-compatible software provided by Seiko for this printer is simply terrible. It seems to me the Mac UI software was clearly an afterthought. It is so bad that we will manually feed a blank label through the printer and tear it off, then handwrite on the label when we only need one label rather than go through the pain of using the Mac software interface. Some of the most frustrating differences between the Mac and PC versions of the software:1 If there is a regular printer connected to the Mac as the default printer, the Seiko label printer will default to that device when the first started. The label printer must be manually selected each time.
2 The software provides a default address template each time software starts. That template can''t be changed, nor can a substitute template, or no template, be configured to appear on startup. The template must be manually deleted after startup.
3 The PC User Interface provides a simple WYSIWYG presentation of the label as you type that is available instantly after the software is initiated. The MAC Interface does not. After you delete the default template, if you have created custom templates, you must select one of those templates after you start.
4 The MAC templates do not permit saving a "blank" template on which you could immediately begin to type. If you save and then load a blank template, you need to then select a default format such as address label or return address label to populate the blank template, which you then must delete before you can start typing your label.
It''s too bad the printer is really an excellent piece of hardware. I''m always surprised that so few MAC programmers must be available that a company like Seiko can''t find one with the UI design experience of the PC programmers.

As this guy was designed for a business setting I should point out that it is rather loud. I would not recommend it for a home printer because of the noise and just because most of the features will never be used. This guy was designed for business, and will do its best when in a business setting. Some of the fax and scan features make use of ftp servers and SNMB shares on a network, things you probably don''t have setup at your home!
Standard connectivity includes a usb hookup, but to get the maximum functionality out of the printer you should connect it up to your network via the ethernet port. That way you can get all the cool print/fax/scan features as well as a handy web interface to check on the printer and make setting adjustments. It does not come with a wireless hookup, so you will need to make sure you have a cabled connection nearby for it to use.
The toner cartridges are reasonable priced and will average you about 2000 copies; and the document feeder is one of the most robust and sturdier ones I have seen on a printer in this price range for a long time.
All in all, a great business product that can really save you money and space no matter where you do business!

I thought I''d try the Panasonic multi-function printer since I figured it might help me in my home office. I''ve only really got a printer so the idea of having a scanner, copier and fax machine I could use for basic tasks sounded good to me. I''ll break this down by task/feature.Setup
The printer was real easy to set up. Plug in a phone line, plug in a network cable (I''m using it on my home network) and plug in power. Install software. Done. The software isn''t even really required. Now, the downside is, if you''re looking to plug this into your computer because you honestly are just using it on one machine and don''t really have a network setup then you''re out of luck. It''s got a USB port so you can do just that (plug it into your computer directly) but it doesn''t come in the box. You have to go get one yourself. Not nice in my opinion. It''s one thing to say "Network Ready" and another thing entirely to be "Network Required". That being said, you still can use it as a printer, copier and fax machine if you don''t plug it into anything except the phone line.
One other thing to note, the printer cartridge included in the package comes in two parts. One smaller part fits into a slot in the bigger cartridge (with the ink) and needs to be opened (you rotate a drum that presumably exposes the print head to the incoming paper). I''m a big and strong guy and I had a whole lot of fun trying to get that drum rotated during the setup. Granted I was afraid I''d break it but the piece you''re pushing against is pretty solid plastic. It was more about how much resistance there was there. It''s possible it was just a freak thing with my cartridge but you''d think it would either be easier or not require you to assemble the cartridge in the first place (my other laser printer has one cartridge).
Printer
As a printer, the Panasonic is pretty straightforward. I think the best part of it is that it''s a laser printer. I''d always been used to seeing inkjet versions of these multi-function printers which has turned me off. It supports up to 600 dpi print outs with decent results. I did have some trouble getting the printer set up in Windows (using Win 7 64-bit) as the installer installed a printer in Windows that didn''t seem to go anywhere. You could print to it but the documents just disappeared in to the ether. I deleted that and reinstalled the printer (just using the built-in/available driver that Windows offered which could still be the same drivers) and it worked great. It can push out 24 ppm and though I didn''t run a speed test to check this out (not gonna waste paper on that...I don''t print that much in a week) what I did print out came out in a snap.
Scanner
I was really looking forward to the scanner part since I have a more "pro" scanner but it''s largely mothballed so it''s a hassle to break it out to do any scanning. It was real easy to run a scan though the results are a bit iffy. For most documents, it was just fine. Scans were clean enough on regular paper. But, when I used paper that had even a slight gloss to it (I''m not talking magazine gloss, I''m talking matte coated paper), I''d get glare artifacts all over the place. Basically, the light from the scanner was (and I''m just theorizing here, not an expert) reflecting back enough to create something like a feedback loop. And, this didn''t cover the entire page, just certain chunks of it. Even more odd was that the patterns, while consistent from scan to scan for the same document, were different from those when using the copy function. So, I can''t say if this is a fault of the machine or the technology itself.
The OCR software included with the printer is functional but nothing fancy. And when I say "nothing fancy", I mean it. The UI is incredibly retro (the software has a copyright of 2002). Whereas you''d expect to be able to use your mouse''s scrollwheel to either scroll or zoom in/out, the app constrains you to set zoom levels (50% of actual, fit to window, etc.) and you have to click around between the horizontal and vertical scrollbars to get where you want to go. You can then use boxes (no magic wand or anything for you PhotoShop types) to define areas that have text, images, etc. It includes a feature that lets you edit the OCR''s attempt at recognizing the word, number, punctuation though it can get tedious and the font they use to display the replacement character is terrible (sort of like a blobby Courier) to where you can''t always be sure if you''re looking at a zero versus an eight or a comma versus a period. The recognition itself is as good as the quality of the scan so your mileage will vary. Clean scans (non-glossy paper, straightforward fonts/text) work nearly perfect (line spacing might take a hit with a slightly misaligned original...especially since you can only rotate 90 degrees within the software). Anything else is a grab bag that usually results in missing sections or something that looks like a ransom note. If you really need OCR, you''ll want to find something better.
Fax
Another feature I was looking forward to. As much as faxing is on the decline (unless you''re dealing with companies that really just don''t trust online signatures for legal or other reasons), I still find myself wishing I had a fax handy at times. I usually end up heading to the Fedex store or letting my wife do it from work. By default, the fax feature is on and working. In my case, I don''t have a dedicated fax line and I was only really planning on using this on an as needed basis. It took a sec to find the right place in the instructions to figure out the correct setting (in fact, the machine''s own menu system had a print option to print a sheet of instructions related to that feature which helped the most). Once I did it though, I was golden. I faxed a doc off to someone (the one time I needed it in six months) and it went off without a hitch. They e-mailed me what they got as a PDF and it looked as good as you''d expect (it was an IRS form so text-dense, no graphics). Even better is the PC Fax feature which lets me "print" to the fax feature and fax something directly without having to print it out. The feature shows up as a printer and, when you print to it, prompts for a number to fax to--even offering a delayed send option so you can have it send out an hour later or something (say to avoid interfering with the phone during business hours). Very cool. The only down side is the software log that shows you sent and received faxes doesn''t seem to retain those faxes despite setting it up NOT to delete sent faxes and the like.
Copy
The copy feature is yet another function I''ve been wanting for a while. Of course, with a scanner, it''s effectively a scan and a print but as I mentioned before, my scanner isn''t exactly a convenient option. The copies worked well and, as you''d expect, are as fast as they can be with a fast scan and a 24 ppm printer. I didn''t try a large copy job but I don''t expect this thing to be some refrigerator-sized Xerox beast that churns out books in a few minutes. For the one-off copy, it works great.
As mentioned above with the scanner, with certain paper types, you do see some artifacting but strangely the pattern is different from the scan. This could be because the copies are lower resolution than the scans (sort of a fast scan) so there''s less opportunity for "feedback" from the light source but it''s strange nonetheless. For the record, the copy scan looks better than the scan.
Conclusion
All in all the product is good enough. I don''t have a previous product that this is replacing (at least not one I''ve used in the past decade) so I can''t really compare it to other products. But, if you''re in the market for a multifunction printer that does it all and you aren''t worried about the aforementioned scanning artifacting (i.e. it''s not about the quality of the scans, just that you have a digital copy you can use), then go for it. The Panasonic includes all the features you''d expect but upgraded with tech that used to be only in dream machines that did just one thing. Just something about having one of these printers as a laser printer rather than an inkjet that seems to make it feel so much better than it used to be when buying one of these devices.

I''ve always had a printer, but the printers that I''ve had have always been inkjet printers. The average person who has a printer at home would do well with an inkjet printer. A few years ago, however, I started my first small business, and then, this year, my second. While I did not require the services of a printer for my first business, my second business, photography, found me constantly printing out contracts and information for clients, and I was getting extremely sick of having to purchase ink cartridges, so I decided to try the Panasonic Multi-Function Printer.One thing that caught my attention upon first opening it was that there were instructions for removing it from the package! I don''t think I''ve ever seen that before. I''ve never dealt with a toner before, and was worried that I wouldn''t know how to put it in, but the picture instructions were easy to follow along and detailed enough so that I was easily able to get it in right the first time. Within just a few minutes I had the printer put together and plugged in to the outlet.
The software installation was simple and painless and in only five minutes the printer was hooked up and ready to print except that I had to provide my own USB cable. I don''t understand why a product that''s this good, and affordable, doesn''t come with it''s own USB cable? Granted, many people may plug the printer into their existing network, but as I don''t have a network, I need to use the USB port, and would have loved to have a USB cable included in the package.
Printing is simple and extremely quick, especially if you''re used to an inkjet printer, and don''t get me started on copying! I''m able to put a contract into the top slot and to watch it feed through, lightening fast, and to print a copy that looks identical to the original. It''s saved me tons of time and has allowed me to have a number of copies of contracts ready at a moments notice.
THE PROS: Easy to set up (although I have had no reasons to try the networking capabilities) and works beautifully. Doesn''t seem too loud to me and I love that the copying function works so quickly, and that it was so easy to put together and set up.
THE CONS: No USB cable!! Please, Panasonic, add a USB cable to the next small office printer you offer!
My original plan was to put this printer in another room of my house, as I assumed that I would be more comfortable sticking with the inkjet printer. Once I saw what this printer could do, and calculated how much money it is going to save me in printing, the inkjet printer got moved and this printer now sits beautifully in my home office.

The printer itself works ok...prints fine, fax works great, scans are mediocre-even from the glass because they turn out lopsided, printing envelopes or labels always turn out crooked as well and after having the machine for about 5 months I started having a line down the center of ADF scans and faxes but that was gone after I opened the lid and vacuumed. I have a few other issues: whenever I use the machine it causes the lights in my office to flicker until it goes back into power save mode (I am in an old building but my other two printers didn''t cause this), every day at noon it comes on by itself--causing the lights to flicker and the BIGGEST issue for me has been that the display is now reading drum life low. I have had the printer about six months and have gone through a little under a half a case of paper and when that display came on, I had JUST changed from the original toner cartridge. If I have to change the drum with every toner cartridge, I will be rethinking the economic value of this little guy. The other thing that is a pain about replacing the toner and drum is that they both are difficult to find! You can''t just walk into Office Depot and get it. I know I should have looked into that before I bought the printer. They both have to be ordered online and currently the drum is backordered on the Panasonic website. I''ve been using this for about a month now something like this takes some time to put through its paces. I have to admit I didn''t test the fax at all since I have no use for it.It was larger than I expected (I was spoiled by my tiny Samsung ML-1740) for an office it''s fairly compact, but for a home office it takes up a big chunk of space. But you get a black and white laser printer, fax, scanner, and copier all in one.
If you haven''t had a laser before, you don''t know how much better they are than inkjets for general use. Sure, printing pictures look worse, but they''re ready to go almost instantly and don''t require constant maintenance and expensive ink. You save so much time and wasted ink and paper. Want to print something? Hit print. Boom. 5 seconds later it''s printed, even if you haven''t printed anything for a week. Every 3000 pages you need a pricey new toner cartridge, but that''s still cheaper (per page) and much less often than inkjet.

Software is pretty meh. The drivers are hard to find and you will need to do a lot of manual configuration on the printer itself (fine with me, but if you don''t have experience with this it could be quite a trial).
Black and white only. This might not seem so bad unless you''ve already had a cheap color laser and realize just how much even crude color improves comprehension of anything but straight text. For example, printed Google maps are incredibly more readable in color.
Initial set up instructions were rather obtuse. There''s a one page visual only, but the pictures are so small it''s a bit hard to tell what''s going on. I managed to do so, but that was mostly using the visual as a hint the hardware is well designed so there''s only one way for anything to fit, so if you get the drum in the vicinity you can figure out what to do next.
No connection cables included you''d better have your own ethernet or usb cable.
Fairly hefty for the home. This certainly does not fit in the printer cubby of my very nice oak desk.
It definitely did the job and at $180 it''s hard to complain too much, but it''s a huge step down from my Brother MFC-9120CN High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Fax and Networking which is admittedly twice the price, but if you can afford the $350 I suggest you take a look at that. But I''m still giving this four stars because I''m amazed at how much you get for the price.

I also like the low price ink cartridges ....the cheapest ink of all the printers I researched (and I researched them all!). The J435W is also quiet compared to other machines I''ve owned, and it feels pretty sturdy.
But I have to say the print quality is only so-so. I wouldn''t want to try to print anything on it that I wanted to look highly professional, for instance, a brochure. But I didn''t buy it to try to compete with Fed-Ex Office. It does print out my color letterhead with above average results.
And one more thing. Since the LCD screen goes dark to save power after just a few minutes, there''s often no way to know the machine is "on" or "off" by just glancing at it.

The comments posted on this thread on January 24th are agreed with wholeheartedly. About four years ago I purchased a Brother 2040 laser printer for about $50 and it has performed flawlessly. So far it has printed out about 15000 pages without one paper jam. This is not a lot for a business but a quite a bit for home use. Three cases of paper and still going.Against Brother''s recommendations I refilled the toner cartridges, used replacement generic toner cartridges and one generic drum. More than likely I have been lucky, but given the cost difference versus the cost of the printer, should it get destroyed, it seemed worth the gamble. The cost per page for the consumables with this printer has been less than a penny a page. Still I know people with kids that use ink jet printers that cost about three cents per page with a printer that is not likely to last more than 10000 pages, crazy. Running out of ink and having to change cartridges every 500 (it is usually less) pages is a pain as well.
One thing about these reviews is the opinions expressed often do not take into account the varying needs/usage people might have regarding a given item. For my use this printer should work out well since most of the printing will be done with the laser. Copies, occasional color prints, scanning and the rare need for a fax are the planned usage for this MFC and so far in this regard it has been working well.
This printer came with printed manuals with first class instructions. Each topic starts with an overview giving the various options and then points to the section you need to go to follow with step by step instructions, very cookbook. Illustrations and an easy to read format relating to the printer controls and menus was well done. Although this might sound simple it is not common to find. Some clowns thinking putting manuals on disc is a high tech way of saving money. Customer service provided with paper manuals is cheap given the goodwill it produces, hello?
Setting up the wireless on the printer given the one button setup option provided by both my router and this printer were available, was very easy. If you have a fussy router, no instructions or hardware is going to make your job easier.
The buttons and the menus provided on the LCD screen to access the MFC functions are easy to follow.
In the last 10 years I needed to Fax something once from home, and I went to Office Depot to do it with minimal trouble and expense. If the fax functions of this MFC are going to be used by me, they will be manually configured for a one time use. The documentation and setup seem to be clear enough for easy setup and use should that be desired.
The document feeder works well. For making copies there is not much if any warm up required. From a cold start on fast quality, three copies feed through the feeder took about 20 seconds to produce.
Photos printed with this printer have been about 85 percent as good as lab photos. Since generic (good quality) photo paper was used, better results might be possible. On 4 by 6 photos you get a border on all sides of about 1/8th of an inch. Unless you are going to be printing a huge volume of photos the general rule is lab photos are cheaper and better than any printer you are going to buy.
The original ink cartridges provided with this printer, living up to the starter cartridge "This is how we make money philosophy", did not last very long. The replacement cartridges taken from a set of 20 generic cartridges purchased for $22 on Amazon have been working well so far, but it is too early to know if this is going to work out.
The Amazon cost of this MFC at the time of this review was the same as other Brother MFCs having duplex printing, memory card slots and a bigger LCD screen with touch screen menu options including links to the social web pages. With the way Amazon rips though inventory you would expect rapid price adjustments to market conditions. For some reason this has not happened with this item to date. As such it is highly recommended you shop around a bit unless you see a more rational price to feature relationship.

I purchased this printer roughly 6 months ago, I use it for scanning and printing with black ink. I have not printed a single color page since owning the printer, yet my color ink is below half while black ink is around 50%. This is due to a daily head cleaning to keep the printer in tippity top shape. The problem is that in order to perform this cleaning some ink must be run through the system. TIME OUT! think about this for a moment, when your kitchen sink is clogged you go and buy a bottle of something and pour it in to fix the problem, then you put this bottle in the basement where it sits for a great deal of time. Now go and read on the label of that bottle how often they want you to use their product to keep your drains clear of clogging. Its absurd! imagine if that company got to pour their product down the drain for you as often as they desired. This is exactly what brother does with their ink. They say its necessary to do a daily head cleaning and the cost of ink comes out of your pocket. I''m not here to promote another vendor but I would recommend that you do some comparison shopping and see what companies are more reasonable about their maintenance. ALSO, when I contacted the company via online chat I was surprised at the smart mouth responses I received to my concern, I had the transcript emailed to me just for future reference.Easy setup and easy software installation. All functions work perfectly. I''ve only owned it for a few weeks. So far, so good.
I''ve owned a Brother HL-2070N laser printer for several years and that one is a real workhorse. I also know several people who are very satisfied with their Brother printers. I''m confident that this one will be just as good. If not, I''ll edit this review to reflect that.

After wasting nearly 3 months with 5 off-brand recycled toner cartridges, I''ve decided to come back to original Brother cartridges. From a price standpoint, Amazon pretty much has the best price for these (at least this model, which is just slightly more expensive than off-brand recycled models).Back in the days of inkjet printers, I always used cheap refillable cartridges, but with toner, at least for my printer (HL4040CDN), off-brand toners have just been headaches (2 brands the cartridges were already leaking as I took them out of their bag, 1 brand left a mess of black powder everywhere in my printer and had to have it repaired, and 2 other brands the colors were just faded).

This cartridge is supposed to last for very long at low usages. I print color pages very rarely (less than 100 pages per year). However, the printer (Brother 4070-CDW) signals that all three color cartridges need to be replaced in about a year also after being installed. I really doubt the quality or design of the products.Save 31% off
We purchase toner for our Brother All-in-one about once every year. Obviously, some of the colors we go through faster than others, but overall, it averages to once a year. We tried the refilled cartridges and were not happy with them at all. They tended to leak and streak and cause us more down time than the savings was worth. The overall quality of print is passable but not top of the line nor a good choice if you want nice photo-quality prints.
However, if you need to print normal text or perhaps a page from the internet, it does fine. The pages come out at a fair pace (better than one would expect from a small printer) and the quality is acceptable.
The footprint is relatively small and if you plan to carry around with you, expect to use something like a backpack or camera style backpack for your laptop and the printer.
The blue tooth that comes with it works well enough. Just remember to install the blue tooth drivers then deal with Windows itself (in that order).
The one real caveat relates to small printer small ink cartridges. One has to realize to keep this unit small and consume little power, the cartridges are on the small side. Fortunately, they are easily found at various merchants and not an odd special cartridge(s). There is the option to get slightly larger ones but again, the larger ones are also fairly small in output.
Last on the not so good list HP insists on some of their inkjets to use flimsy mechanisms for housing the ink cartridges. In this case they have some "wires" bent to work with the install assembly of the cartridges. This is asking for trouble sooner or later.
I have not ran enough paper through to experience any paper feed problems and thus, cannot comment on this. This is an important part and as those who have had laser printers and inkjets know this can be a problem that occurs over time.
Overall the unit is passable and in some respect very nice. I give it three stars rather than four because of the ink install assembly. The blue tooth, compactness, reasonable output are all to be appreciated.

Set up easily bluetooth has about a 15 foot range the wifi is probably multi-room with a longer range. The printer takes up less space than most wired printers but isn''t all that small. I needed a small mobile printer suitable for taking to Court and setting up right at the counsel table. This way, when a judge wants to read a case, or receive a short pleading, we can bang it out right away rather than have some poor devil from my office hop in a car to drive it over to us as in former times. Also, since this printer is color, we can occasionally use it to knock out a photo or whatnot as an exhibit when needed. Print Quality : I''ve printed lots of graphics and photos from my PDA. They all look very good. Documents print quickly.
Interfaces : The printer comes with a BlueTooth adapter. This works well, plug it in and go. If you want wireless printing, the WiFi adapter costs about $90. I spent a decent amount of time with HP tech support getting my wireless configured. I think this could''ve been done better but tech support was very good. There is also a USB cable, printing from a laptop via USB works well. *Note: You cannot use WiFi and BlueTooth at the same time each requires an adapter and there is only one slot available for the adapters.
Portability : It''s light weight for a color printer, but it''s still heavy enough that I wouldn''t want to carry it far. It comes with a nice leather case that fits snugly on the printer.
Battery : the printer also comes with a rechargeable battery. I have not used it much. It fits into the back of the unit and does not stick out very far. If you are on the road a lot, this would be very convenient.
HP Solutions Center : This comes on the start up CD. It is a pain. Whenever you turn on your computer, it will take forever to start up because the HP software ties up your processor accessing your internet looking for updates. I went into start up processes on my PC and turned it off. It''s a bit slow starting up now.
