Okidata C5200N LED Color Printer

Okidata C5200N LED Color PrinterOne motivation for writing this review is some important misinformation in a previous review. At any rate, I could not decide between the OKI 5200 and the HP 2600. At my local office supply store, they sat side-by-side, and thanks to two different $100 rebate offers (one instant, one mail-in) for the OKI, they were the exact same price. My decades-long favorable experiences with everything HP I had purchased (including a mono laser printer) had me strongly leaning toward the HP. The sample test prints made by each showed them very close in quality, with the HP doing a slightly better job at printing graphics. A big difference is that the OKI''s prints are high gloss. Even the lettering is gloss, when printing no graphics, on plain white paper. So imagine every letter you print with the OKI having glossy black type regardless of what paper you use. If that''s something you like, the OKI will not disappoint. For normal use, I personally find it a bit strange. It so happens that I was buying the OKI primarily for the printing of color brochures, and the glossy output was perfect for that. So I went with the OKI against my better judgement, but in love with the glossy prints.

I really don''t know whether I made the right decision, all things considered, because I don''t have the HP 2600 to compare against. The OKI has an enormous footprint making it difficult to find a place to park it. It also weighs 50+ pounds. The HP has a great and stylistic design that allows a MUCH smaller footprint. Something to keep in mind before you purchase, as it''s a problem for me now. I am going to obtain a separate low cart and place the OKI on that.

The various toner cartidges inside the OKI are horizontally arranged. Lifting the long cover to its full height (requiring a lot of free space to do so), one then reaches over the long bank of toner cartridges to access the rearmost colors. The HP 2600, on the other hand, has an extremely easy access design, with all the cartridges available at the FRONT of the printer, in vertical array.

The OKI does produce oustanding text (with the warning that it is high gloss and there''s nothing you can do about it) that is crisp and clean down to small font sizes. Printing photos is another story. Relative to other color laser printers in this price range, small photos (which I use a lot of for brochure printing) print about average. However, the OKI photo printing would not even match a cheap inkjet printer from five years ago. There are several color printing tweaks available, and I found that using the OKI''s sRGB color space worked a bit better than the other settings. Color lasers have a long way to go when it comes to quality photo printing. They key is to keep the photos small, somewhere under 3" x 3" .

The OKI build construction is good. Preparing for first-time use requires about 25 minutes of removing tapes, straps, and shipping blocks located all over, under and inside the unit. Be certain to keep the cartridges level in your hands whilst you''re removing all the protective tapes from it. I managed to spill some cyan toner on my pants. Driver installation went perfectly, in contrast to some aggravating hacking I''ve had to do when installing HP laser printer drivers.

The OKI fired up properly (if noisily) the very first time, and the intitial test page was perfect. While the print speed is quite good, the warmup time is not. The HP will get you prints from a cold start much quicker -but the printing speed is slow.

Documentation includes a handy and useful booklet that attaches to the side of the printer. The manual itself is lacking in detail. The setup guide was ambiguous and not very helpful.

The built-in Ethernet card is a nice addition, but also found on other color lasers in this price range. Setup for this part is intimidating and not for the faint of heart.

I use 65 pound stock for the brochures I print, which means I have to use the Multi Purpose Tray to load the sheets, and flip open a rear paper stacker so that the stock shoots straight through the printer and out the back. Recall that the printer footprint is already deep, and now I have to allow another foot of room for the sheets to feed out the back. Further, the Multi Purpose Tray is very kludgy to use.

Now for the sobering aspect of OKI ownership (and other color lasers as well). There is bad news, and worse news. Bad -it costs more to purchase a new set of toner cartridges than it cost to purchase a new OKI. The high capacity (5k pages, NOT 50k as mentioned in a previous review) toner cartridges for this printer are $62 for black and $142.50 for the other colors. If you purchase the rainbow pack (all colors at once) you save 10% and pay a mere $440.15. Folks, I paid $400 for this printer brand new after mail-in rebate. Things get worse, as the OKI uses separate drums, one for each color also, and they cost $100 each as well. When you change a drum, OKI recommends you change the cartridge. OKI claims the drums are good for 50k pages. When you thought things couldn''t get worse -well, they do. OKI, unlike HP, is one of those companies that provides only a starter set of toner cartridges (rated at 3k pages). The ugly fact is that once you fork out the dollars for OKI 2600, in only 3k pages you''ll be facing the peculiar decision of forking out $440.15 for new cartridges, or buying a new color laser for LESS. By 50k pages, you''ll be needing some $845 to buy new drums and cartridges. Better start scouting out a convenient dumpster in which to unload your 50-pound hunk of plastic.

The bottom line for me is that the OKI produces some great glossy brochures that just pop with crisp color. Unfortunately, it is not easy to print these brochures due to the kludgy Multi Purpose Tray. For other uses, especially if you''re not seeking the glossy look for everything you print, you may want to check out the competition. I''m personally not looking forward to another major financial outlay at 3k pages, as detailed above.

I purchased this printer after reading a lot of reviews of other printers and this model''s predecesor, the C5150. After rebate, I purchased it from Staples for $400...and they delivered it for free.

I previously owned a Konica-Minolta Magicolor 2400 W Color Laser that I returned. A lesson I learned from that printer is that some color lasers are power hogs. My home office is in an older house (120+ yrs old) with typical home-sized circuitry. The K-M caused the lights to flicker when on. The power consumption on this one is very reasonable.

As previously noted, this printer is big. It is 2 ft deep without the straight path outlet tray open. The top opens like a car hood to access the consumables. While this makes it easy to get to them, you can''t put this printer anywhere you don''t have clearance over it. Measure carefully before you buy. It is also heavy...almost 60 lbs.

Set up was a snap and the instructions were good. Once in place, hookup and installation was easy, as this is not on a network. Just plug in two cords and run the installation software.

The first sample turned out to be defective after about a month. (That can happen to anything.) Oki Customer Support shipped me a refurbished unit overnight and mailed me a lable to ship the defective unit back. Fedex would even come and pick it up.

While getting a refurbished unit was expected, it came with no consumables...toner, drums, fuser and belt. No problem with this printer, tho, because the top opens and everything comes out and back in easily. So swapping everything from one to the other was easy and I was back up and running in no time.

This is where I had a minor problem. The defective printer had less than 300 pages on it. The replacement had a page count of more than 3000. The printer (as most do) judges the life of all consumables based on the page count, so my 99% full toner cartridges were now detected to be only 67% full with a corrosponding decrease in the remaining life of the belt, fuser, and drums. Since this printer will stop working when it thinks it is out of toner, I would have to replace all toners when they still have 1/3 of their life left in them! (The older firmware version of the replacement printer was a minor issue.)

I called Customer Service back with the above concerns. They said there was no way to reset the page count on the printer after servicing, but they agreed to my concerns. They sent me a brand new printer (also overnight) with all new consumables. Fedex came and took the old one away a couple of days later.

The new printer has been running satisfactorily for about 4 months now with no problem. I print mostly on regular 20 lb paper but have done business card stock, Avery lables, check stock, envelopes, and card stock. I have even used lables and envelopes that said "inkjet only not for laser printers" with no problems using both the standard tray and the multipurpose tray. The instructions suggest using the straight thru method for envelopes, card stock, and lables, but all come out fine making the turn thru the normal path.

Contrary to the whining in the previoius post about all the toners running out at once...that is not likely. Depending on your usage, the black will be out first. The others will likely last a lot longer. As far as price, the cost of one black cartridge is far less than the 7 inkjet cartridges (At $30 ea.)I would need for the same 5000 pages on my HP 6540 inkjet.

As an aside, the price of consumables is comparable with other color lasers. If you use the cost of consumables as a basis, the 7 injet cartridges far exceeds the cost of that printer, too. (Not factoring in color ones.)

I do mostly black and white printing and have the defaults set to only use the black cartridge in draft mode. (Still good quality for most uses.) This extends the life of the color toners. The default settings are easy to set using the front panel controls.

The shiny printing takes some getting used to, but I can live with it.

The color pictures (graphics and photographs) I have done have looked good, tho not as good as a good inkjet, but from reading other reviews, neither does any laser.

The only cons are warmup times and noise. Compared to some other lasers I demo-ed in the store this one is a bit noisier especially when warming up, but still bearable. (But then I go back to the old dot matrix printer days, so I guess noise is relative.)

It also takes approx 1 min 55 sec for the first page to come out when the printer is in standby (power saving) mode. Successive print jobs take about 40 seconds for the first page. After that is is fast and quiet.

Overall I am happy with the printer, very satisfied with the customer support, and would recommend this printer. I would give it 4.5 stars if possible, and 5 if it were quieter.

As an IT Manager, I had heard good things about OKI color printers and purchased my first one almost two years ago -it now has almost 30,000 copies on it and (other than consumables) has required no service attention.

Pluses: Color and image quality ROCKS! Comes with network card already installed. Rarely jams, and easy to clear jams if the occur. Easily replacable and widely available toner and drums (and, if you check out a well-known online auction site, aftermarket drum reset kits are available which will save you about $300 when the printer hits 15,000 copies).

Only one negative: Network install/use can be a bit quirky (print jobs sometimes jam in printer que for no reason, but the network admin. can easily reset without rebooting).

Bottom line: I''m now using only OKI 5150/5200n''s (8 total) in our three store locations. For a mid-priced color laser, the 5200n deserves a serious look.

I''ve had the Oki C5200 for almost 5 years... it has been an excellent printer. I was lured into using a cheaper toner that claimed to be 100% compatible with the OEM product. WRONG. 6 months later and my wonderful laser printer is in need of over $800 worth of repair work. It has become very noisy, the black won''t print without smearing, all other colors are skewed, and there are blotches of cyan, magenta, and yellow all over the page!

Oki makes an excellent product... just make sure you use the OEM toner.

I just ordered an Oki MC360 MFP from Amazon today for a little over $300 to replace my failing C5200. :(

The printer has a lot of good features, and works well for about 6 months. Then users are faced with a dual nightmare. The high cost of toner and drums has already been mentioned above in several reviews. Complicate your life with the fact that maintenance problems start to accumulate and make the investment in toner and drum replacements more and more doubtful with every day of use. My printer has had 3 separate visits to the depot repair, and since the printer weighs in at over 50 lbs, that''s no easy task. It has also had at least 6 calls to Tech Support. Still the problem keeps coming back. Now I will buy a product with built in duplexing, and set the OKI in the rear, as a back up only.

After looking at the cost of commercial wall stickers, we bought this sticker paper and printed our own while re-doing my daughter''s room. The stickers adhere well, but are reposition-able, at least a couple of times. They were perfect for the job at a fraction of the price.

Essential for any oddball projects that may require stickers. Unfortunately this item is difficult to find in stores like Office Max, WalMart and Staples. I had to order it here on Amazon. A bit pricey for what you get but when you need to create your own stickers, there''s nothing better.

These stickers work great for making stickers in your own personalized shapes that you cannot get from the standard rectangular size. I make labels for jars of goodies I give to people on special occasions.

I really love these sticker sheets. What makes them great is that you can stick and remove with no problem. Previously, I was using shipping labels to print and place on items like glass and plastic. When you try to remove the printed label from the glass or plastic it was really hard and you would need some windex or alcohol to try and get the residue off. With these you can place them on practically anything and they will stick. If you need to remove them they are really easy to come off with no problem. No residue behind or anything. The last project we did was making custom labels for a wine bottle. Everything was printed and placed on the bottles. At the last minute we had to change to date on the labels. Luckily they were easy to take off. I can imagine the trouble I would have gone with shipping labels. Although the shipping labels are much cheaper and are like stickers, they are more permanent on whatever you place them. These special sticker papers are more thicker and are re positionable.

This is essentially a sheet of label paper. The entire 8.5 by 11" sheet is one giant sticker with the texture of Avery''s normal shipping labels. It takes ink extremely well, and my printed projects looked crisp and sharp.

For my first project, I used Word and added photos and text boxes to create a set of six individual labels. I cut them out myself and stuck them on and they looked great on my bottles of homemade liquor.

I might prefer it if there were an edge to this paper that made it easier to peel the sticker off the backing, at least around the sides. I found that I scruffled up the corner of my labels a tiny bit when trying to unstick them from the backing, but it did smooth out easily on my project.

If you want to make custom gift labels, photo stickers, or decorate kids'' binders and things, this would be enormous fun. You could also stick the paper onto those floppy sheets of magnet they sell at office stores to make your own gifts of photo magnets or magnets drawn by kids. I''ve been wishing to find something like this for years.

I ordered the three primary 564XL color cartridges. Two came directly from Amazon: 5-stars! Exactly as advertised. However, the third came from "MegaToners". BEWARE! The order was for an Original cartridge and it was swapped out for a remanufactured cartridge. In addition, the remanufactured cartridge did not have the microchip attached to the cartridge. The printer did not recognize the new cartridge. Nowhere in the packaging was there instructions on what to do with the cartridge without a chip. Through some internet research, I learned that I could transfer the OEM chip to the remanufactured cartridge and it might work. I did that, and the new cartridge still did not work. Rip-off!!! I will be requesting a full refund on the third cartridge.

This is one of four inks used in making color copies and color photographs. In combination with the other three it does a very good job.

As I''ve mentioned in other reviews on HP ink, the ink has been reliable and odor free. It''s easy to get spoiled and wonder if costs can''t be cut by buying refills or cheaper brands; I''ve tried that and have now gone back to HP ink and have no regrets.

Printer and ink form a partnership which can produce excellent long term results if given the opportunity. I believe that HP has developed equipment and products which enjoy a successful partnership and I don''t begrudge HP making a profit on their work; I want them to stay in business!

For the record, I''m not an HP employee, nor affiliated with HP in any way beyond being a satisfied customer!

The biggest complaint for personal inkjets is well.. ink. It''s always expensive and you feel like you are spending the lionshare of your purchase on the fancy packaging and plastic delivery mechanism. We use our printer for casual use and a decent amount of photo 4x6 printing. These XL inks definitely last longer than the std versions that shipped with the printer, and yellow always seems to go first. But they work as advertised, and never last as long as you want them to. We''ve had our printer for 2 years and replaced inks once a year now.

The colors seem to pop when using the special 4x6 papers and drying time is very fast. I haven''t seen any fading in pictures that were printed 2 yrs ago with these inks, and they are advertised to not fade, so i guess its working as advertised.

The last couple of times I ordered this cartridge at Amazon Prime I received the cartridge from an affiliate minus the box. There was a note saying that this is a genuine HP cartridge but for some reason they had to ship without the box. This makes me a little nervous -is it really an HP product? It seems to work OK (hence the 5-star rating), but the lack of the box makes me nervous. This time I ordered it directly from the HP website -a bit more expensive but I know I will get the real thing. Sorry, Amazon, you are my favorite retailer by far, but I want to know I''m getting what I paid for.

My review is just to say that this printer ink is probably what you''re expecting to receive, but it''s not in the cardboard box. It is certified by HP as being brand new, and it''s wrapped up to ensure it''s not dried out. That''s why it''s cheaper than other ink colors, and it''s actually a good deal. The XL is a better deal than the normal size, and works out to be cheaper over the long run. I did all the math and research on this, so you can trust me on that. This price is good unless you have a coupon somewhere -I checked Staples and all the other name brand stores. So, don''t over-research if you need HP 564 printer ink. This is a good deal.

New Epson America Business Inkjet B-310N Inkjet Printer Color Plain Paper Print USB Fast Ethernet PC

New Epson America Business Inkjet B-310N Inkjet Printer Color Plain Paper Print USB Fast Ethernet PCI got tired of buying the typical home variety printers. Been through about 6 already. Poor quality, slow and you have to pawn your first born to buy ink. My used printers do make great door stops and flower planters for the office. This printer is solidly built, fast, good quality text and photo, LAN capable and most of all it has he-man size ink tanks that cost only a few bucks more than those wimpy little ones. So far, I''m impressed with this printer. I hope it doesn''t disappoint me.

  • HP''s value-priced XL cartridge provides more than two times more prints compared with the standard HP 920 cartridge.
  • HP 920XL inks are optimized for use with HP Advanced Photo Papers

I reviewed these once before, but apparently I bought them from a different vendor this time. As long as you are getting XL cartridges, the vendor doesn''t really matter. Shop around for the best price. This vendor sent them to me quickly and they arrived in good condition.

Inkjet cartridges definitely don''t last as long as laser printer cartridges do. But be aware that the ink indicator on your printer will probably recommend cartridge replacement long before you really need it. I have had no problems continuing to print for several months after the "low ink" warning comes on. Eventually the printer just refuses to print when the cartridge is "really" empty.

I used two sets of standard cartridges in the first three months, but the XL cartridges lasted more than 9 months, even after my kids began to discover a variety of craft and art projects that were very color intensive.

I''m not trying to print quality photos or anything like that, but these seem to work quite well for printing color text and graphics, Fritzing diagrams, and photos contained in PDF documents on the cheapest office paper I can find.

Excellent printer-copier-scanner-fax for the home office.

The print quality is slightly less than a laser printer, but you need a magnifying glass to tell the difference. Use a quality paper and the eye cannot tell the difference.

Yes, it uses ink in quantity, but the black cartridge is double size. The printer warns you when a cartridge is low, so have a spare on hand. I use mostly black and the cartridge was empty while the other colors are only about 1/4 empty. The cost of cartridges is less than the toner cartridges for my Dell laser, but you get fewer pages out of ink. By my calculation, the cost per page is about the same if you purchase good quality cartridges form Amazon. However you get a color multi-function printer at much less than the cost of the color laser.

Envelops feed from the top at the back. Pages to copy go under the lid and you have to put one page in at a time. Reproduction is excellent in either color or black&white.

The scanner works well but it is a bit slow communicating the image back to the PC. I print a signature page from a pdf document; sign it in blue ink; scan it back in to a pdf file. That image looks like a signed original.

The wireless set up is a bit tedious and you have to follow the set up sequence with each PC you want to use. Connect the wire, PC to printer HDMI, go thru the installation. Then disconnect and go thru the wireless (same sequence) to get that PC to see the printer.

The printer sleeps to reduce power consumption; but it comes alive fairly quickly. The software will check for updates; those may require a re-boot on your PC.

I never set up the fax, so I don''t know about it.

I bought this cartridge for my HP B8550 printer, because it'' s only 1/3 the price of the same in Europe. But as expected my printer gave an error message: "incompatible ink cartridge". Obviously HP did some regionalizing in their equipment in order to generate additional income with the customers outside of the USA. Apparently the chip on the cartridge has another identification information. Also the same cartridge is called "HP 364 XL" in Europe instead of "HP 564 XL" in USA. Anyway, I''m pretty satisfied with my HP printer and in the meantime I found a dealer in Switzerland who sells these Cartridges only twice as expensive then in USA, so I''m lucky. Good paper quality, brochures look professional but you have to be careful when you fold them so they don''t crack at the edges.

The paper quality is great:

-nice weight, maybe too heavy for some projects

-takes laser printing toner well

-bright wight

-The scores are not hard to find as another reviewer says. They make quick work if you don''t have a folding machine. BUT ... see below

The problems:

-Glossy paper generally creates static but this was ridiculous. At times 4 sheets would stick together. It wasn''t the printer because they would pull through as one really long page as they stuck together. I ended up wasting 42 out of 150 sheets because of miss-feeds. I used Hammermill glossy paper on the same day to finish the job and had NO static. It was clearly the paper; not the weather.

-The scores that make folding easy split the paper into two layers when you fold them. Not very flattering.

Given the cost, wasted pages caused by static, and the separation upon folding, this did not work for me. I''ll stick with the cheaper Hammermill (1/4 cost per page). I have a production paper folder, so the scores make no difference for me.

We were extremely disappointed in this ''tri-fold''... if that''s what you want to call it.

We''re always willing to pay more for tri-fold brochure paper because it will typically cut your folding time in half.

Not so for this paper. You have to really work at trying to figure out where the (slight) line is to fold on.

For my money... two thumbs down!

Pagepro 5650 45PPM
  • Gigabit Ethernet interface provides a direct line of network communication to PCs, Macs and Linux workstations
  • Multi-protocol support includes TCP/IP v6, IPsec and SSL for the latest in network and security standards
  • Support for widely-used emulations, including PCL 6, PostScript 3, PDF and XPS, means black and white printing goes off without a hitch.
  • PageScope utilities simplify setup and management easily from the desktop.
  • The Konica Minolta pagepro 5650EN offers an immense duty cycle of 200,000 prints per month to serve the most demanding print environments.

1. Forget about adding another paper tray. With an additional tray attached, it prints maybe 5 pages per minute. Nowhere NEAR the 45ppm advertised. Even with the two trays in the printer, you''ll get 20 ppm at best.

2. Constantly getting memory full error. This can be fixed with a simple driver upgrade... but good luck installing it! Drivers which are 3 years old WILL NOT install on Windows 64-bit platform.

3. If in the off chance you get this useless thing to print something, it will jam. Even with top notch paper it will jam.

4. Tech/customer service. If you have two arms you are hired at Konica Minolta. Go fill out an application. No experience required.

Background: We hooked this baby up for our workgroup network with 4 workstations and 1 server. OS used: Win 7s and Window Server Edition

Long story short, we''ve encountered issues after issues with getting it to print. The hardware is 5 stars, however, the software and support center is beyond failure. Expect to be on hold for 30 mins at minimum when calling their call center.

Then, expect to rely on their web knowledge self-help website to DIY and fix it because their technician genius are useless.

What happened? Because of its software, our network from time to time would not recognize the printer and would not print. On a good day, it would print, but if you print more than 10 pages, MEMORY FULL Message pops.

We finally solved it ourself after the technician wasn''t able to. Found out, the driver that win7 installed isn''t correct. After getting the official driver and update from the web, it still gives the run around.

Overall, this is too, too, much of a hassle and is unacceptable for a company this magnitude to fail to provide.

Again, the hardware is great, but cross your finger because software issue may prevent you from productivity.

We bought the Pagepro 5650 45PPM when our Phaser 3600 died. We are a high-volume printer at and can print upwards of 1500 sheets a week. This printer made it impossible to do our job as there is a 2 to 3 minute lag between each job queued. We returned the printer and returned to the Xerox Phaser 3600.

This is the 5th printer we have bought, and I am very happy with Konica-Minolta. We tried a HP, and it was a disaster, KM has been the best, both in B/W and their laser Color, of which I also own. It is fast, and once you get the hang of the controls and sequences, it is dead nuts great if you need volumm, and I do. Got a great price at Amazon, well below street/store pricing and the shipping was fast, secure, and it arrived in an unopened new box.

HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One Printer

HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One Printer
  • All-In-One device offers color printing, copying, faxing, and scanning
  • Outstanding print quality for photos and documents; speeds up to 34 ppm black and 33 ppm color
  • Scan documents and photos at up to 4800 dpi optical resolution
  • Backed by 1-year warranty
  • Device measures 17.7 x 9.7 x 17.4 inches (WxHxD)

This is a good machine, but as many have pointed out the software can be a problem. Here''s some software install advice (below) to make it work well for you.

I have a Brother laser AIO at my office that I love, but I chose this HP for my home for several reasons. The WiFi Brother unit has a 10 page document feeder compared to HP''s 25 page. This was important to me, maybe not you. I really like the styling of the HP better. The HP rep was in Best Buy and printed off a photo for me. It was fantastic. I''ve reproduced the same results at home, though I didn''t buy it as a photo printer. The Brother has a phone handset hanging off the side that I will never use. The HP looks & feels like a higher quality product, though the Brother reviews are good.

Follow the quick start guide to set up on your LAN. I have WEP and had no problems...literally a couple minutes to setup.

1st, in general, never use photo manipulation software that these printer companies provide. If you need to work with photos invest in a good commercial product. There''s some reasonabally priced products.

2nd. Trash the disk that comes with the printer and go straight to HP.com and download the latest drivers. That have fixes most of the problems the other reviews point out. You have two download options, drivers only or full software. I did drivers only and it worked fine, however you loose control of some of the units settings, so I went back and got the full package.

However, I highly recommend this installation method that I used.

Unzip the download and run. then...

1. Choose the custom (not the "easy" recommended) installation option.

2. Choose "NO" on the next pages which asks if you want to do auto updates. Anytime you select this for any product you now have another application running in the background all the time polling the internet. It will slow your computer down.

3. On the next screen select "custom". Don''t be afraid, ever if you''re not an "advance user" as it recommends.

4. You get a screen with a bunch of options to install. The first one you have to select, the drivers. Then uncheck "shop for HP" (just crap), "HP Updater" (memory & bandwidth eater), "customer particapition program" (memory & bandwidith eater), "smart web printing" (you can try it, but more resident sw to eat up cpu and memory), "HP photosmart essentials" (not essential and from what I read it''s crappy software. You can try it, but it''ll save you 40MB not to install), "OCR" (unless you really use OCR. If you use it a lot, buy a good program, this will save you another 80MB).

What you do select is obviously "drivers" (it makes you & you do need this), "Solution Center" (no actual solutions here, but it does give you some control over your settings), "imaging & device functions".

Choose the default directory it recommends, unless you really know what you''re doing and want another directory.

Choose "connect through network", if you are connecting through the WiFi. Make sure you get the printer on the network first, as the directions tell you.

Don''t sign up for the HP offers crap, unless you like spam.

I''m used to the Brother scanning SW, but now that I''m getting used to the particulars of HP''s it''s not too bad. I do have a problem scanning from the plate glass from Adobe Acrobat. It works fine with the doc feeder, but for some reason not the glass. I just go to the "solution center" and tell it to scan to a pdf and it works fine.

I did jump on the HP support site around midnight and have a live chat with a support person. He''s the one who informed me I need to install more than basic drivers to gain some control over settings. I found the support helpful, but I didn''t exactly have a brain teaser of a question either.

Good luck...and don''t install that darn auto updater.

Buy HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One Printer Now

I did a lot of research into just about every AiO variant out there before deciding on the C7280. This replaces an aging Epson scanner, an old Panasonic Thermal Fax machine and a networked Lexmark Inkjet Printer in a home office. I looked at the various choices from Brother, Epson, Canon, Lexmark, other HP products and even the new Kodak AiO. For my money, this printer had the best overall combination of features and specs. The print/scan/copy resolution ranges, the 33.6 fax modem, the duplexer, built-in ADF, LCD display and the ability to run many functions without a PC all for under $300 was what I wanted. The small footprint was a plus. The various tray/covers, etc. are not the most sturdy I''ve ever seen, but are about as good as I''ve seen on most AiO''s in this price range. I think that unless you are throwing rocks at it, the pieces/parts should hold up to home office use. The C7280 does a pretty good job in each of the four areas of print/scan/copy/fax. I''ve had this printer now for 3 weeks, and overall, so far, so good. Everything works as promised, but there are a few HW and SW `gotchas'' to note. Here''s the Pro''s and Con''s, followed by the lowdown on most of them:

Pros'':

Very Good print and copy quality with reasonable speed

Excellent Photo print quality

ADF works well, no jams, separates pages well

Print/Copy/Fax from the Printer''s LCD work very well, with clear, easy-to-navigate menus on the LCD

Duplexer

Reasonably quiet operation

6 separate ink tanks

Con''s

Duplexing only works for PC-printing, not for copies

100 Sheet Paper tray is inadequate if you print very much

Software is bloated, buggy and in some areas is not very user-friendly

Some features (including Fax) don''t appear on SW installed on wirelessly connected PCs

Initial Setup: The HW installation was pretty straightforward: there''s LOTS of tape and plastic film to remove, then the included `Quickstart'' guide moves you along quickly. The printer takes several minutes to initially calibrate itself once you insert the six ink tanks and turn it on.

The HP software is a completely different story. First, you MUST turn off your firewall and antivirus SW if you are planning to install the C7280 as a network-attached printer. If you don''t, the SW will not `find'' the printer and simply hang during install. Second, you can select the various HP SW components you want to install/exclude. If you pick them all, you are going to slog through over 350 MB of SW installation. Depending on what SW you select, it takes a good 30-40 minutes to for the installation to complete, so be patient.

I installed the SW on three different Win XP Pro PCs in my home (two wired networked desktops and one wirelessly networked laptop). All INITIALLY worked fine, but after a couple of days, the laptop would boot fine and then just respond so slowly that it would take 7-10 minutes for any application to load. After some investigation, I found that removing the HP Update software corrected the problem. As near as I can tell, it was opening a port and continuously polling the web for updates to the HP SW, thereby burdening the CPU and the network, and leaving the laptop completely unusable. It took a while in Safe Mode to figure it out. Then the two desktops also starting acting sluggish, but not as bad as the laptop. Again, removing the HP Update SW resolved the problem. Then I started seeing various HP programs hang (`not responding'') when I shut down any of the PC''s. I ended up removing the entire HP SW set and reinstalling only the core SW on each PC and now all 3 are working fine with the printer. I''m not a PC software expert, but 300MB+ of software for this printer seems very bloated (and I didn''t even install everything on the HP disk!). For comparison, all of the other printer, scanner, and photo software products I have COMBINED (and which this printer replaces) used less than 175MB. C''mon HP, you should be able to write leaner, easier-to-use applications.

General Printing and Copying: Regular Color and B&W output (print and copy) is pretty crisp. Black is very black, grays are pretty well defined and the colors seem to be pretty true. Print and copy speed is fine for home office use. The printer is pretty quiet when printing. Mine sits about 7 feet from my phone, and I can carry on a conversation (handset, headset or speaker) with it churning in the background with no impact to my call. The one big gotcha I have found so far is that the duplexing function works ONLY when printing from the PC. You cannot automatically generate two-sided copies, period. This would seem like it should be a no-brainer, since the duplexer could simply flip the page to handle the next sheet in the ADF, or could signal you to place the next original on the platen. So far the only choice has been to manually flip the output and put it back into the paper tray. I think this is a big miss by HP. As for paper supply, the 100 page tray is pretty lean. For my print volumes it''s OK, but repeatedly refilling it for higher volumes would be extremely annoying. One additional nit here: when it runs out of paper during a job, and you refill the tray, you have to hit `OK'' on the printer''s control panel to resume printing. Other printers I have used (including my Brother laser printer) automatically resume printing when it senses it has paper again. Yes, it''s a nit, but it annoys me.

Photo Printing: The photo print functions on the printer are excellent. I have inserted a couple of different cards into the media slots and the C7280 has quickly found and displayed the images on the cards. Printing directly from the printer is very straightforward, and the menus on the LCD are easy to navigate. View, crop, red eye removal, etc. all seems to be pretty intuitive and work pretty cleanly. The quality of the photos is great. It''s hard to tell them from prints I''ve had from Wal-Mart, via web services, etc. Printing photos from the PC works, but the `HP PhotoSmart Essential'' software is cumbersome, and takes too many steps to import in image, set up to make a print, verify that you are really ready to print, and finally, print. I''ve seen and used too many other too many other photo programs (I have a couple of Canon photo printers) to believe it has to be this complicated just to import and shuttle a 4x6 off to the printer.

Faxing: I''ve only used the fax a couple of times but it too seems to work as advertised. My fax use has fallen off in recent years, but I still need to occasionally send/receive a Fax, and the ADF/Fax features seem to work well. One oddity here: the Fax feature does not appear on my wireless laptop, which is not a big deal, but if I can set speed dial numbers, etc. on the desktop, why doesn''t it allow me to do the same from any PC that can access the printer settings? Doesn''t make sense to me.

Scan capture works well, but the SW takes some getting used to in order to understand how to set the DPI resolution, type of file to create (e.g. jpeg, gif, etc.). The SW is slow to respond and bring up the multiple menus/dialogue boxes where you set the various defaults you want. It all seems to work, but again, the SW is slow and cumbersome to navigate compared to other products I''ve used. I haven''t tried the OCR SW yet.

In summary, the C7280 seems to be a pretty solid printer, and the printer features work pretty well. The copier, fax and scan functions all seems to work as promised, but are pretty basic. The SW is very disappointing. That, combined with the HW shortcomings (e.g. the duplexer) prevent me from giving the C7280 a higher rating. Output quality is definitely a `5'', but the software and the hardware misses limit me to a `4'' overall. For my purposes, it will do the job, and even with its limitations, it does provide more functionality than the old device it replaces. Time will tell how well it holds up.

Printer, scanner, copier, fax, ADF, duplexer, color LED information display, USB, wired Ethernet, 802.11B/G wireless, memory card reader (CF, SD/MMC, XD, MS/Duo). The HP C7280 is a marvelous dream machine. Has a photo paper tray and a red eye removal button too. My unit (French) came with OCR scanning software. Haven''t tried it though. The unit is surprisingly modest in size.

Documentation and software is very good. Be patient with software installation. It is not a quick process. All my computers are Windows Vista Premium. Before installing, disable anti-virus software, possibly firewall, file sync, and backup software. The software warned about this. I ignored the warnings and the installation process failed until I disabled them. An end user should never have to be concerned about this -but I digress.

I''m using the printer to print documentation (mono), usually two-up and double sided. Print quality seems fine although I''m not looking with a critical eye. My printer is networked wirelessly to the router. First page out is very fast on my Ethernet wired computer but somewhat slow on my wireless notebook. The slowness is probably inherent to the notebook-to-router-to-printer wireless networking as opposed to the C7280. Making one of the links wired seems to make a speed difference. If you find this to be an issue, consider putting the printer on an AC power line network such as the well reviewed Panasonic BL-PA100KTA HD-PLC Ethernet Adaptor.

With so many functions, this machine is a modern marvel. I''m really suprised at how well this newly produced machine works. There''s a lot of difficult technology packed into this box. Great work HP!

I have three minor issues. First, the installation software shouldn''t ask me to disable software to install new software. The software industry needs to sort this out. Second, give me an option to disable the balloon popup that says something like "Printer HP C7280 is disconnected from network". It appears often and intermittently. I''m not sure if this is a wireless network issue or an HP issue. Regardless, I want to opt to not see the message. Just an icon change is sufficient. Third, I haven''t found an option to print pages in reverse order.

Update 22-Sep-2007: Wireless printing performance was improved when I changed the router''s wireless channel to a lesser used channel. I used a WiFi finder device to show all wireless networks and their channel numbers. There''s software that can do that too. I then picked a less noisy channel. I also changed the printer''s IP address to a static IP. It seemed that the router was assigning new IP addresses when the connection got flaky. This was particularly a problem since three computer''s were using the printer. The static IP assignment will lock the printer''s IP to a fixed address thus ending the IP roulette issue.

Update 11-Nov-2007: Flaky wireless problems have been resolved by upgrading to a D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router. Fine product. Recommended. YMMV.

Update 21-Mar-2008: Update software available! I found their new software, filename 100_228_PS_AIO_02_Full_Net_enu.exe available at HP''s website, to be a much more pleasant install and a bit better usability. I installed using the "custom" mode, selected manual update, deselected checkboxes for update, supplies and web printing. Be sure you have a C: drive though. One of my three computers has no C: drive which causes the install to abort. I''ll have to change the drive letter to C:

Update 24-Mar-2008: New software didn''t recognize duplexer unit. Asked me to manually flip paper. Solution is to set Printer Properties->Device Settings->Duplex Unit to Installed. Why doesn''t the software automatically detect the duplex unit? Argh.

Want HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One Printer Discount?

I''ve only had the printer for 1 week. So far, it is good, but not great. I purchased the unit b/c of its automatic document feeder, its ability to duplex automatically, and it''s wireless.

Here''s a quick summary of my experience so far.

1. The wireless setup was easy without issues.

2. The software that comes with the unit SUCKS. It''s unbelievably cumbersome, is always popping up windows, is slow, and doesn''t always work.

3. Because of the above issue, I set up one of my computers with the driver only, (didn''t install the software). Well, apparently in order to automatically print on both sides of the paper, you need the software. Boooooo.....

4. Scanning actually scans to .jpg. C''mon HP. Give me the option, .jpg for images or .pdf for sheets of paper. This one feature alone is almost worth returning the unit since I do a LOT of scanning for work.

5. Something I like I can set the default printing to black and white. Thank you for letting me conserve ink!

6. A few picky things (but not deal breakers) the printer is very loud and takes a while to initialize. When printing on both sides of the paper, the printer has to wait to let the ink dry, so it takes a LONG TIME to print one page. The sound on the printer when faxing is LOUD! Let me turn it down! And I''d really like the ability to have all of the little lights on the unit turn off when the printer is idle. Welcome to the age of green energy conservation, little lights when not in use are useless and consume energy for no reason.

HP let me print on both sides of the paper without using your software, and let me scan to pdf. Fix these two things and your printer is a dream machine.

First on the negative side and related to installation. It was difficult and the documentation really skimped on installation issues even when you went online. You might have some intital wireless problems but fortunately for me I know something about networking but still took me an hour to work through them. What really lost a star besides the installation problems was was lack of clear documentation on two-sided printing. You have to enable two-sided printing and you may miss the box that asks you to do that. For the life of me, I don''t know why it wasn''t a default. Also, instructions on proper installation of the duplexer was very poor...a simple picture even on the web site would have helped.

Now on the plus side: First, the printer doesn''t look flimsy but much more well built than it''s 5000 and 6000 cousins and has more features than the 7180. Those printers above the 7280 are big monsters that are wider and higher and don''t do much more than the 7280. While substantial looking and non-flimsy, the 7280 gave me more desk space since I got rid of my old fax and scanner. One deal breaker for me: the printer had to had automatic 2 sided printing whith the 7280 has at no extra charge (watch out for the "two-sided printing capable"---which means you spend about $70 more for a duplexer...the 7280 has duplexing when you buy it.

Besides wanting a duplex printer, I wanted to replace fax and scanner to unclutter my desktop. I also needed it to work well with my MacPro desktop, Imac, and Macbook pro. My earlier printer was OS compatible but software for it was almost an afterthought for the MAC. I was pleasantly surprised that OSX was strongly supported on this all in one. It comes with several software tools for editing scanned images and the TWAIN driver plays nice with the New CS3 Adobe PhotoShop. It also has an acceptable (free) OCR software that can output to Word. There is really some nice integration here with the software which usually isn''t the case for Macs but I think HP wants to make Apple happy. What about the quality of the printing? Good to excellent and fairly fast but not the 30 pages per second in B&W. Scan quality? I think fair to good. I think some calibration might be needed if you were using it for serious scanning but the scan isn''t bad and relatively fast.

Once you get the duplex to work 2 sided printing is easy (more on that later). The printer comes with a small color screen and actually it is useful to do the various tasks such as faxing, scanning, and of course printing. Once you overcome the problems of installation, I have a totally wireless printer (802.11g) as well as a Bluetooth printer if you spend $20 for a Bluetooth dongle so two ways to get wireless and of course the printer has USB and Ethernet capability. It also has a media reader and when you put in a CF, XD, or SD, etc. your window opens and you can copy the files to your computer. You can use the Mac Finder windows from the Mac OS, or the interface that comes with the software that mimics a MS Windows file explorer. The software is simple to use. Even with the little onboard screen you will be surprised how much pre-printing manipulation you can do.

I started out hating this printer a bit during installation now it really shows me how versatile it is at a reasonable price.

One last feature a surprise for me: the automatic document feeder...get it! I am used to opening the scanner lid and placing my document but putting several sheets of pages to be scanned and then have them fed in and scanned automatically is a feature I didn''t think about but really is something I can use to speed the scan and copy process up for multiple pages. That feature used to be only available on expensive machines.

Update on Mac 10.5 (Leopard): as of this time not all features work if you upgrade to 10.5. For example, when you try to use the ADF and use the scan menu button to scan to software on your MAC you no longer get any selections. You get: !No Scan Options. Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot. Wrote HP been ignored so far. If you upgrade to OS 10.5 you can still print and scan but the onscreen menu and ADF on the printer are not fully functional with the new OS.

  • Easy to install design

I have, as of this very moment printed 11,004 pages on my brother MFC-9970CDW printer and been through the factory toner, and 2 TN-315BK toner cartridges. One would think that I would have slightly better performance; however, I am not achieving the advertised amount of pages. I am very disappointed in this product.

UPDATE: 9/17/12 --

Since my original review, I have printed out over ~75k more pages through this printer and have utilized 13 toner cartridges. As so many of my fellow shoppers like to point out via their witty commentary as a reply to my review this is about 6000 pages per cartridge! Therefore, I must have been wrong with my original review... Unfortunately for them they are still wrong, I just happen to have educated myself on how to force reset the software based counter that the printer itself utilizes to determine when to flag the cartridge for replacement. In my particular model you open the drum unit cover, press 1, and then proceed to reset the cartridge. This method then allows me to replace the cartridge only when the toner begins to no longer show up on printed pages. This has resulted in an additional ~800 pages per cartridge.

This printer is almost identical to the HP DESKJET 3050A. In fact, other than model number, I''m not aware of any differences. The printer works well and works faster than our old printer did.

The set-up isn''t too difficult, but it did take more time than usual to set both our computers to be able to print wirelessly from the same printer. This shouldn''t be an issue unless you are someone who is unfamiliar with the basic set-ups of most software and devices. It that''s the case, you can also choose to use the printer with a wire. However, you can only do that with one computer (unless you purchase a separate adapter).

The images, both in black and white and in color, come out clear and crisp. If you wanted, you could easily use this printer to print photographs.

The printer comes equipped with a scanner that works wirelessly, too. It''s a nice feature, that though more prevalent, still isn''t standard. The scanner feature was one of the main selling points for us as there are documents that we need to scan from time to time and we needed a scanner that worked.

The price of the HP DESKJET 3052A is comparable to other printers of the same size and capabilities. Also, ink cartridges for HP printers are usually a little less expensive than those for other ink printers and you can usually get several hundred copies printed before having to replace a cartridge. This is about average and much better than some other printers on the market (Lexmark anyone?).

The only complaint I have with the HP DESKJET 3052A are the internal printer margins. The printer has a pre-determined margin set inside. This internal margin cannot be changed. Therefore, if you type below a one-inch margin or are printing a picture, be sure to look at the "print preview" to see if the printer will be printing your entire document or picture. From the research I''ve done (HP Customer Support has been silent on this matter) this is an internal error in the printer that could be fixed by having an update for the driver.

The HP DESKJET 3052A is a good little printer with the only major flaw being that it doesn''t print to the bottom of the margins. Beyond that, we''ve used the printer for about two months without any incidents.

When originally purchased as a package deal with my new MacBook Pro (OS X Lion), set up was easy and the printer worked well. For my first wireless printer, it seemed to be a good purchase.

Soon, however, the wireless capability dropped off line.

No sweat, just reinstall the software... Nope. Install does set up the printer to connect with my router, I can print via email, I can plug the computer in and print. WiFi printing is a no go. Install says my computer doesn''t see the printer, make sure I''m connected to the same SSID, etc. (it is, all components talk to the router), but the computer doesn''t talk to the printer.

I followed many instructions from web pages, uninstalled and reinstalled, etc. all to my disappointment. I am not an IT specialist I need it to work.

If my time were not so valuable to me, I would figure this out and get it all to function. However, it is more economical to replace it than to mess with it anymore.

For a printer that Apple sells with its systems, I am not impressed.

I have had the printer less the two months and it is already broken. I have printed less than 50 pages and it no longer pulls the paper in straight. When I print from my scrapbooking program, it cuts off the last of the page. I even went to the HP website to see how to fix the problem; even after follow all the steps, it still wouldn''t print the full page. The print quality was horrible, the pictures came out streaked. I liked my last HP printer but, this one is a terrible. Don''t waste your money.

I can''t tell you how many times I''ve had to reinstall this printer on my computer because the computer stops recognizing it and vice versa.

Also I thought the e-print was an awesome feature so I gave my printer email to a bunch of my friends and family members. Worked for a while, then I got calls from people asking me if I''d received their printer messages and I hadn''t received anything for a week. e-print online says my printers not connected, printer says it''s connected fine.

This thing is a piece of garbage. The LCD screen looks worse than a cell phone I had 9 years ago. Seriously, if a printer is available for sale at Walmart (as this one is) you should probably by a different printer.

POS

This printer is garbage. I have owned HP printers exclusively for about twelve years and this is the first one that is just worthless. The only thing I can count on it to do is jam. If I print two pages, at least one will jam. When I need to print something, I have to sit right by it and straighten every page or snatch it out because it''s jammed again. Don''t even think about sitting in another room using your laptop and trying to print something. When you go to get it out of the printer, you have nothing but a wadded up sheet of paper. I guess since printers are so much cheaper than they used to be, we really do get what we pay for.

014A Cash Drawer, Multipro Cable for Star 24V Series

014A Cash Drawer, Multipro Cable for Star 24V Series
  • APG Cable CD-014A
  • Connects STAR printers to APG Drawers supporting 320 MultiPro interface
  • Used to allow the drawer to Auto-Open when receipt prints

Yes, this is the cord that you will need for the Square Register POS set up. It is intended to work with

Star Micronics 39463110 Monochrome Printer and APG Cash Drawer Vasario Series VB-1616 (painted front with dual media slots, 320 MultiPRO interface and 16 inch x 16 inch) color: black

The way it works is that this printer will connect to your router (you will need a regular network cable for this) and use the multipro cable above to connect from the printer to the cash drawer. Your iPad then connects to your wifi and using Square Register it "discovers" your printer. The multipro cable is how the cash drawer opens automatically.

I use this setup (as recommended by Square) and have never had a problem. Very happy with this purchase!

This worked exactly as described and combined with a register and printer gave me a full functioning square powered cash register.

The Canon i250 is marvelous. My old HP died, and I wanted an inexpensive printer now because I expected at a later date to buy a new computer and a higher tech printer. Now I need neither. In other words, the Canon i250 allows me to print wonderfully what I thought only higher tech/higher priced printers would! I''ve been able to print greeting cards, as well as photos and crisply clear documents. The i250 only takes seconds to warm up, and each print job is done quickly and beautifully. This printer allows one to choose a variety of print qualities and paper types to ensure the best print for each job. Set up was super easy, as is the printer''s use. And noise? It''s not excessive; I never even give it a second thought. Along with superb performance and inexpensive price, another great thing about the i250 is that I can buy both a black and a color refill cartridge for it for less than I''d pay for one HP cartridge. What a super printer bargain!

Where do I start? This little bugger is AMAZING! I actually bought this for my son, because he got an iMac (being the Apple freak he is), and his printer was ailing. So I told him if he found one under $75 I''d get it. He did. He found the Canon i250.

This little guy is so good! The quality is exceptional (and beautiful w/ Mac OS X font-handling.) and he can use it for everything, even printing photos. Now, I don''t recommend it for exclusively photos, but for the occasional one, it''s fine. Also, refills won''t break the bank with about $7 and $15 respectively. Printing time is short; very efficient and quick. Also, it comes with many features that are considered as ''extras'' with the others HE looked at. The only problem is it doesn''t come with a USB cable, and that''s all it''s compatible with. But that''s OK... I found a Belkin for about $5. I would recommend this to anyone, especially for document designers and offices for its ''bang for the buck''. Amzing features, reliability, efficiency/speed, and quality wrapped in a (very) tiny (perfect for portability.) package that won''t break the bank.

I love this printer. It has a small footprint, low cost ink, great print quality, fast print speed, and easy to use printer drivers. I also like the Paper In Tray which can be closed to cover the printer to keep dust out. However, it is much noiser than my old Canon S200 printer. It also takes a while for it to complete its warm-up routing before it actually starts printing. But when it does start printing it is fast. I also noticed that it only has one rubber wheel to feed paper into the printer unlike the S200 which had 2. Thus, there are times when the paper can get fed into the machine a little skewed especially if you are using very thin typing paper. But on the whole I still love this machine.

I''ve used many printers before from HP, Lexmark, Epson, and others. This printer stands alone as simple, sleek, sharp & clear, fast, small, easy-to-use, and pocket-friendly. Get it now and you won''t regret it.

At its value price point, perhaps you can''t expect perfection from the Canon i250,(...) I find very few reasons to complain.

First off, the quality of printing was surprising for a standard, 4 ink printer, even on digital photos. For photo prints, does it perform as well as, say, an HP Photosmart 7960 with its 8 inks (which is over 4x the cost)? Of course it doesn''t. But for routine use, even on the occasional photo, it''s really not bad.

When in its normal printing mode, it''s not a speed demon, but it does perform reasonably well, and is typical of printers in its class.

On the up side, consumables for this printer are remarkably affordable, providing somewhat of a disincentive to pursue refill kits. They also seem to have a fair and reasonable number of prints per cartridge change. But if you do choose to refill, I''ve found the print cartridges in the i250 refill easily and effectively, free of print-counter chips (so popular in Epson''s printers these days) that are such a pain.

And speaking of Epson, recent Epson inkjets I''ve used will end-up with clogged print nozzles if the printer sits unused even for only a couple of days. Not so here; I''ve gone weeks between prints, and it fires-up and works perfectly each time.

Also a plus is the printer''s compact size. While you still need to allow space for paper movement, when not in use, the top folds down and it''s small, shoebox size let''s you put it most anywhere.

Truly, at this price, almost anyone can afford one, and it''d be money well spent in my book.
